Cannot Open Camera RAW files: Do I need to reinstall PS?

Hello,
I reinstalled PS today after I got my computer back from the repair shop.
Now it will not open RAW files.
I get the following error message:
Any thoughts on what might be going on?  I realize this is an Apple screen shot, but I think this might be platform independent.  I'm posting my question there as well.
Thanks,
Matt Dubuque

Hello, thanks for being so very helpful!
I'm typing from another computer, so I can't immediately check which version of Camera RAW I am using.  But I updated Photoshop in what I believe is the best way, recommended on all the readme files of Adobe.
I went to Help/Updates, clicked on it and was automatically routed to the latest and greatest updates.
And my camera is a Canon 5D, so my best judgment is that even if it were not the VERY latest it would still be sufficient; many of the RAW updates have substantially been the addition of other, newer cameras to the list of supported hardware and mine has been supported for at least a year, before CS5 arrive.
I know that that a great big part of the  problem is within Photoshop.  This is because my settings on the Image Processor are always for 1920 x 1080.  And when I run the Image Processor with these settings and then check my Destination folder where I have chosen to batch my new and improved downsized images to are ALL incorrectly sized to 1620 x 1080.
So the problem is contained within the Photoshop module, or at least I have to solve that aspect before I go on to further troubleshooting.
I have an academic discount so I've decided, because this seems to be a profoundly difficult problem to resolve promptly in view of my film submittal deadline, to purchase another full version of Photoshop for Windows, use it on my Windows machine, resize everything there and then export those .psd files on a thumb drive over to my Mac Pro.
(I have all my key photos also on a Windows machine as a backup).
It had not occurred to me until this morning that this approach will probably work.
I've marked you as "answering" this question and I very much am thankful that you have helped me.

PS:  The film is shot in 1920 x 1080 HD, so I need to make all the photos fit within that "frame" on the Premiere timeline.

  • Cannot Open Camera Raw images in CS2

    Hi
I am running CS2 and PSE 8,but cannot open Raw images in CS2
My camera is an Eos 5 MKII
Camera Raw in PSE is 5.5.
I would like to open the Raw files into CS2.
    Any Help would be appreciated.
I am using the latest firmware from Canon.
    Thankyou
    Keith

Raw files are unique to each camera model and manufacturer. There is a 'model' field and 'manufacturer' field whose values are checked as any RAW format file is opened and if the program opening that file does not have the codes for processing that specific camera's RAW file, most programs will throw a error message and not precess that file.
For Adobe image editing programs you need to have the an ACR plugin version that provides the code for your camera model.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras list the various cameras supported by Adobe photo editing programs and the version of the earlies ACR plug-in that supports that camera.
For the Canon Eos 5D MKII you will need ACR plug-in version 5.2 or better.
Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications list the program versions of Adobe image editing programs, the ACR plug-in version shipped with the program and the latest ACR plug-in version that that program can use.
The last ACR plug-in version for CS2 is 3.7, so you can not directly open the CR2 or RAW image from this camera. You could upgrade to PhotoShop CS5, the most current version of PhotoShop, or download a copy the free Adobe DNG, Digital NeGative, converter and convert your CR2 files to the Adobe DNG format and then open the DNG file with your copy PhotoShop CS2. You could also open the file with Canon image editing software and transfer the image as Tiff to your copy of CS2.

Where can I find the plugin to open camera raw files for Nikon D810 for Photoshop CS5.1? I've looked around the site but cannot get this to work.. Thank you.

See for yourself which version of ACR is needed for that camera’s RAW files
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
then check your version (Photoshop > About Plug-In > Camera Raw).
Your version of Photoshop does not support that version of ACR.
You could use the free DNG Converter.

  • Cannot open nikon raw files from my 3200 in elements 8

i cannot open nikon raw files from my 3200 in elements 8

    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
You would need PSE11 since the 3200 requires ACR version 7.1
Only PSE11 can have 7.1, so to be able to use your raw files with PSE9 you should download the free Adobe DNGconverter which can batch convert a whole folder of raw files into the Adobe raw DNG format which your PSE8 can open.

  • Having trouble opening camera raw files. Already downloaded Camera Raw Update for Photoshop CS5. I have a pc.

Please Help? Having trouble opening camera raw files. Already downloaded Camera Raw update. I have a pc.

If the camera is fairly new then the version of ACR you have with CS5 won't be able to read those file. You'll need to upgrade to a newer version of Photoshop or use Lightroom 5.
Once a new version of Photoshop comes out Adobe does not support updating ACR from the older version of PS.

    •  If using Mac OS X (10.7.4), do the following:
    (1) Mac OS X (10.7.4):  Restart Mac, download and install OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo).
    (2) install Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 4.06
    (3) If trouble continues, use your Mac's  > Software Update... menu command to see if newer updates are available.
    (4) If trouble continues after all Apple Updates are applied, contact your camera manufacturer for suggestions.
    •  If using Mavericks, restart Mac, download, and install the latest Digital Camera RAW Compatibility update.
Use your Mac's  > Software Update... menu command to ensure your Mac software is up to date.
If the trouble continues, contact your camera manufacturer.  They may have software for translating their RAW files.

  • Opening Camera Raw file in CS3 Bridge

I have CS3 Bridge and CS3 Dreamweaver instaled as well as Photoshop CS2.
I want to open Camera Raw files in CS3 Bridge. The Bridge Help file says:
"Select 'Edit Camera Raw Settings' in Bridge General Preferences to open Camera Raw dialog box in Bridge" (as opposed to opening in Photoshop.)
But my Bridge General Preferences has no such checkbox option. When I open a CR file in CS3 Bridge, the file opens in Photoshop CS2.
How do I get the file to open in CS3 Bridge.
    Thanks, CMA

I had a problem with this previously and came up with the following:
If I am in Bridge and double click a JPEG or TIFF and hold down the shift key, Camera Raw will not be scheduled
If I am in Bridge and double click a JPEG or TIFF image, the image will always schedule Camera Raw if the Bridge menu item Edit/Preference/Thumbnails has Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF checked (Bridge JPEG and TIFF Checked).
If I am in Bridge and double click a JPEG or TIFF image and Bridge JPEG and TIFF is unchecked and the JPEG or TIFF image has previously been processed by Camera Raw, Camera Raw will be scheduled if Camera Raw Preferences dialog has Always open JPEG files with settings using Camera Raw or Always open TIFF files with settings using Camera Raw checked.
If I am in Bridge and double click a TIFF image and the TIFF file has layers, the TIFF file will not schedule Camera Raw.
In Photoshop Preferences (Edit/Preference/File Handling) there is a check box titled Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG files. I checked the check box and opened a JPEG image in Photoshop Camera Raw was scheduled. I clicked Open Image in ACR and then saved the image in Photoshop (JPEG saved in Photoshop after passing thru ACR). I then Unchecked the check box and opened the JPEG file Camera Raw was not scheduled.
The only action I see for the Photoshop File Handling check box is to either schedule or not to schedule JPEG images. I do not see any related action for TIFF files in Photoshop. My expectation is that TIFF files will open in Photoshop not ACR.

Cannot open camera RAW images from Sony DSC-RX100M3 camera.  Working on a Mac with Photoshop CS5 and Camera Raw 6.7?

    Bruce,
When I made the transition to digital some 8 years ago, I had tremendous help from a number of well documented websites, among which:
    http://www.luminous-landscape.com
I think a lot of stuff there to get you seriously going. Another one is:
    http://www.computer-darkroom.com
I sold all my film based stuff, except a Nikon F3 and a handful of lenses and a Paterson developing tank.
The Nikon suspiciously smells like foam mirror damping strips chemically decaying.
I sold my enlarger over the internet. The word "enlarger" caused me to be on SpamCops blacklist for a while.
I'm in this since the seventies, and I think you'll be as amazed as I was at the possibilities and control you have. And no more bags with $300 worth of film that's consumed in one shoot.
Jump in both feet! you won't be sorry. And these forums are the best help you can get.
    Good luck,
    Rob

  • Problems opening camera raw files.

I have tried to open camera raw files (CR2 and RW2) and get an error message that PSE9 can't open this file because it is the wrong type of file. I had thought that PSE9 could open and process Camera Raw. Will appreciate your suggestion for resolving this issue. Thanks.

Try opening directly from the folder rather than from Organizer
Right click on a file and choose Open With photoshop elements editor

  • Cannot open Camera Raw in Bridge with 5D Mark II files

Just bought a Canon 5D Mark II and Adobe Photoshop CS4 - no experience with Adobe so far. Neither Photoshop nor Bridge opened raw files initially.
After copying Camera Raw 5.3 manually into the (Windows) Photoshop "File format" I can now open RAW files in Photoshop (the automatic Adobe update program reported errors at installation and did not work) but NOT in Bridge. Maybe the 5.3 plug-in needs to be placed elsewhere - anyhelp on that for windows application would be great.
When opening my raw files in Bridge, the automatic DNG conversion did also not work.
My issue is that I don't know how to see and work on raw images in Bridge with the Bridge command "File/open in camera raw"  also not working. I was reading about the same issue in another forums and also in this space but after hours of trial and error and testing all the published wisdom I got stuck now. I am very keen to learn from the experts. Thanks in advance for support.

Hello, and welcome to the forum, Ludwig.
It seems that you missed both the readme ( http://www.adobe.com/special/photoshop/camera_raw/Camera_Raw_5.3_ReadMe.pdf ), or the detailed instructions on the bottom on the very page where you downloaded the update: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4365
The correct location is: Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS4\File Formats . You will need to remove the other copy from the Photoshop tree.
Please post this information on the other forums where you also saw unresponded questions on the same topic, so that you can help others!

  • I have Photoshop CS2 vsn 9.0 with the Camera Raw 3.7 update and the Digital Negative Converter.  I cannot open any RAW files. Does the fact that I've opened them in Lightroom 5.0 before make a difference?

When I try to open the RAW file (CR2) from the Photoshop application or from the Bridge (even while holding down the shift key) I get a message saying it's not the right kind of file. When I try to convert using the converter, it won't recognize the files.

Which operating system are you using?
Which camera are the camera raw files from?
Did you convert the files to dng using lightroom or the standalone dng converter?
If using the standalone dng converter, which version?
In the dng converter did you try setting the Compatibility for Camera Raw 2.4 and later
    (Preferences>Compatibility)
You should also be able to send the files from lightroom to cs2 without converting to dng, either by using Photo>Edit In>Photoshop or setting cs2 as an external editor in the lightroom preferences
