Cannot open e book

I am trying to open some e books I have purchased and I get an error message saying that the machine cannot do that operation. Does anyone know what to do?

If I try to write an e-mail i get an error message "cannot open address book file". Then the program freezes, and I can not close the page, and none of the features of thunderbird works.

A media file in an email. What type of a file? Was the email from a trusted source?
Unfortunately WMA and WMV files CAN carry malicious code in them (viruses-like). They SHOULD NOT affect the OS X, but the world is spinning fast...
The app icon - I meant go to the Applications folder, find the Address Book application and click on it one to select it.
COMMAND + i - Command is the key next to the space bar (the one with a "clover" type of a symbol and command written at the bottom). Hold the Command key and tap "i" - this shows the Info box, and General is at the very top.

I have installed a trail version of FrameMaker 12 and cannot open the book and chapter files in FrameMaker 8

My colleague and I use FrameMaker 8 but I'm considering whether it would be a good idea to upgrade to FrameMaker 12. So today I installed a trail version of FrameMaker 12.
Before opening a book file in FM12, I copied it to another folder so I wouldn't mess up anything. Unfortunately, I forgot to copy the chapter files so I opened most of them from FM12. As soon as I found out about it, I copied them to the new folder, but too late.
Now I'm not able to open the original files from FM8 (and even worse, neither can my colleague). I read somewhere else, that I should save the book file in the .MIF format (I tried both 12 and 7.0) and then open it from FM8. I tried that, but I still cannot open the chapter files.
I get an error message saying: "Althoug xxx.fm appears to be a FrameMaker document, it can't be opened with this release of the product".
I didn't make any changes to the chapter files when I looked at them in FM 12.
What should I do? I case we decide not to upgrade, we will not be able to access this book which is a big problem. I already have some small changes that have to be made.

Back saving to MIF should work, but it’s probably faster to just retrieve a backup of the FM8 files & books and restore them over your botched FM12 versions. Then take a copy of that backup and put it on the trial machine to play away without impacting anything else.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

Books downloaded from iTunes are not optimized for the Mac OS X, but for iOS devices such as iPhones, iPads, and the iPod touch.
In other words, you cannot open an iBook and read it on your Mac.

I downloaded and re-installed Adobe Digital Editions so that I could get books from the library and read them on my tablet. It is not working and my tablet cannot open the books??

What can I do? I am 68 y/o and not very computer literate. I put an micro SD card in my computer to copy the books (also some ebooks that I bought from a retailer) onto the SD card so that I could read it on my computer or my ereader by puting the card into the reader (tablet or whatever you want to call it).. HELP

Please follow the below steps and check:
1) Right click on the book in library that you want to copy from your computer. Click on the "Show File in Explorer".
2) Copy/Paste the book from this location to your SD card.
3) On your tablet open the book from your SD card in your ereader.
You need to make sure that you authorize your ereader with the same ID with which you authorized your computer. In case you do not remember which ID you used for authorizing your Digital Edition, click Help-> Authorization Information.

Cannot open any books in IBOOKS since IOS 8 upgrade

Since "upgrading" to IOS 8 my IPAD now will not allow me to open up books I have purchased. I can see all of them in purchased but when I go to "bookshelf" it is EMPTY. To say I am mad is an understatement. I am about a nano second from chucking this thing and getting a kindle or something that works. This is ridiculous.

Picas, I think I figured it out. I have two different apple id's and must have purchased the books from a different apple id than the one I use on my imac. So when i switched the appleid on my imac and turned on the icloud it worked! Who knows? Now maybe you can help me get rid of searchbenny/bing on my imac. Just happened the last few days...ugh! You can't currently read ibooks on a Mac or PC - they can only be read in the iBooks app on an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch

Cannot open epub-books in ADE

Hi all,
up to about 2 weeks ago I had no problems downlaoding epub-files (well, actually acsm.files) from public libraries and reading them in ADE or - after copying them - on my e-book reader (Pocketbook Pro 903). Then there must have been something happening I don't know what. Without changing any setting neither on the laptop nor in ADE nor somewhere else now the acsm-files get downloaded but they don't open in ADE. (In the libraries the items are shown as loaned.) Drag & drop doesn't work, neither doubleclicking on the downloaded acsm-file nor anything else I tried. Deactivating the laptops's firewall didn't help either. I also deinstalled ADE properly and installed again - no change, the problem's still there. Nor I can't read free text samples of books to buy in online stores, so it doesn't seem to be a problem of the libraries' loaning systems. Previously bought books are still there in ADE and can be read.
The laptop where this problem occurs is a Vista Home Premium SP 2 machine.- Does anybody have an idea what's wrong and how to fix that problem?

I updated to iOS 7.0.2 and cannot open purchased books not yet downloaded

At first I couldn't purchase the book using the iBooks app, then I purchased it on my computer and tried to download it to my phone. It looks like its downloading but then it never actually does and every time i try to open it, it just tries to download again. Its not the book or the file because I tried it out on another book that I had already purchased I had the same problem. Books that I had already downloaded on the old iOS work, just not new ones. Any ideas? Its pretty annoying to buy a book and then not be able to read it

try a reset, no data loss. Hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
You can also try - settings - general - reset - reset network settings.

I have my Kendle app on the iPad. All of a sudden I cannot open my books. I see them, but they won't open like they did before.

I have not had a problem until recently. Could it be the new operating system I up graded too?

Plug it into power, and hold down the home and the sleep/wake button for 30 seconds.
If this doesn't work chances are something is wrong with your iPhone, I'd suggest taking it to an Apple Retail store. www.apple.com/retail (You can change your country at the bottom of the page if need be, that's for the US)
Also, if you look in the headphone jack... or look into the bottom where the dock connector plugs in... and you see a red circle... You've set off the Liquid Contact Indicators in your iPhone by getting liquid in your unit. That would definately be a reason for your iPhone to not be working.

Well, System 7 code 31 for sure means the HTTP headers from the activation server either aren't getting sent from your machine, or aren't getting received from the server (there isn't any way to tell just from the error message)
Is there more to the error message? They're supposed to have four parts:
System: 7
State: ?
Class: ?
Code: 31
Message: (usually for this error it'll be 'error on request')
