Cannot open e-mail attachments

This is my first Apple and I am still learning, but, why canI not open attachments in e-mails sent to me? I can not open ANY pictures or short video clips and sometimes they have a "winmail.dat" file that will not open. I appreciate any help you guys have to offer...

It sounds like you may primarily be getting these messages with attachments from someone sitting behind a MS Exchange Server, and that Exchange Server is using a certain setting discussed at the link below:

  • Windows users cannot open my Mail attachments

I run into periodic Windows users who cannot open my attachments. Initially they claim they did not receive them, however on further inspection they have received them, just cannot open them.
These files are in various formats: jpg. tif. pdf. I include all file extensions and I send as Windows Friendly Attachment.
What can be done to remedy this problem?

Have you tried Zipping them before attaching? Sometimes this helps.
Finder, ctrl, menu, Archive. (This Zips a duplicate, on my machine).

drag the file to the desktop, then using the menu item "File > Get Info…"
in the "Open With" section select "Mail" from the list and then click the "Change All…" button to make Mail the default application for all .eml files

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • Open e-mail attachments in BB 8703e

I am getting my e-mails from Outlook 2003 (Exchange Server) using the BB Desktop Redirector : that way I get everything that reaches my Inbox at the office.  Even though my 8703e has the application "BB Attachment Service 4.2", I can not open e-mail attachments.  The selection "Open attachment" is not in the menu when I click the trackwheel.  Is this a limitation of the BB-to-Outlook channel?  If so, how do I solve it?
    Solved!

you will uninstall or repair Desktop manager to be installed for BlackBerry Internet servcie (BIS) configuration and delete Desktop(cmime) and (cical) service books on devices present under options>advanced options> service book.
this is how you can set up pop/imap/owa integrations. i  dont beleieve you need to enable POP as OWA (outlook web access ) should be present on your exch and you can integrate email accounts via OWA. BIS servers check for mail on your exch server every 15 minutes and then push messages to device, you dont have to make any changes on device or exchange.

  • Updated today and cannot open my mails it says: The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?

updated today and cannot open my mails it says: The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Cannot open video mail

This is regarding an old post that hasn't been answered:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9883233#9883233
Basically I cannot upload videos sent from a Sprint PCS mobile to my email account because Windows technology is required. I am aware of the virtual box and bootcamp but I would much prefer a Mac only solution...Perhaps someone has written a script or knows a workaround?
Any help appreciated even if that means redirecting me to another section of this forum, but in this case, which one exactly?

I didn't misread your post. You stated that "... it's a fact I have verified myself and it is known problem to both Sprint PCS and Apple" and "The bottom like is I cannot open Video mail send by a sprint PCS mobile because it requires Windows technology." You also stated "I would much prefer a Mac only solution...Perhaps someone has written a script or knows a workaround?" To me this clearly states that (a) it can't be done any other way and (b) you would like to do it another way.
The bottom like is I cannot open Video mail send by a sprint PCS mobile because it requires Windows technology.
Since you refuse to provide details about the required "Windows technology", I can only guess that perhaps it's an issue regarding WMV files. If that's the case, you should investigate Flip4Mac WMV: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/28842 .
If that's not the problem, you could increase the chances that someone could help you by supplying details of the required "Windows technology".

  • This morning I cannot open the mail Icon. It worked last night. What happened?

This morning I cannot open the mail Icon. It worked last night.

I'd first recommend restarting your computer before taking the steps below.
Click the Finder icon on the left side of the Dock to open a new Finder window (if no new window appears, select New Finder Window from Finder's File menu).
Select Applications from the left sidebar.
Locate Mail inside of Applications and double-click the icon to launch Mail.
If this doesn't work, could you provide some more information as to how you're opening the application and what you're seeing?

  • Have a problem opening e-mail attachments

    Hi,
i'm having a problem with opening e-mail attachments. I received an e-mail from a friend, and it had the little paper clip on it. (I believe she was sending an article. But she also sent me a photo in a separate e-mail, neither worked). But I could not figure out how to open it. I tried putting my cursor over it, but it seems that there was no way to open it. There was no way of opening it, it just had that icon, and nothing else. Why am I not able to access it? (I should point out that she has a PC. I dunno whether or not that makes a difference but I thought I'd throw that in there). Any assistance you can give me on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Have you tried saving the attachment to your hard disk and then opening it?
If there's an attachment, near the top right of the message window should be the option to save it. Click on 'save' and then try to open the file in the location you saved it to.

Suddenly my imac will not open e-mail attachments.  It scans for viruses.  When I hit "continue", nothing happens.

The problem most likely is the antivirus application. My recommendation would be following the developers instructions, uninstall the application. Most antivirus applications tend to create more problems than they solve. The best thing you can do for your system is to run Software Update frequently and let Apple's security handle any issues. I'd also strongly recommend you carefully read Thomas Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
