Cannot open Excel documents in Sharepoint 2010 Enterprise

We keep having this recurring issue where sharepoint will not allow users to open Excel documents. They receive the error:
"Unable to process the request. Wait a few minutes and try performing this operation again".
I did some research and it turns out that a simple reboot causes the issue to subside, but it comes back again.
Any ideas?

    Hi,
You mentioned this works fine externally.  Internally are the sites HTTPS or HTTP?
If it is HTTP, what does the AAM map look like?  If it’s HTTPS, where does SSL terminate on the NLB/TMG or on the servers?
You mentioned you tried on multiple web applications, did you try and create a brand new one using just a server name as the URL?
If so what was the behavior?
You should be able to find the error message in the ULS logs.
Check all the servers, maybe it’s an unexpected server.  Also make sure that verbose logging is enabled.

  • Cannot publish Excel workbook to Sharepoint 2010 : "You can't open this location using this program. Please try a different location"

I am trying to save an Excel 2010 file to a Sahrepoint 2010 document library but keep getting the error:
"You can't open this location using this program. Please try a different location"
Googling this suggests enabling "Desktop Experience" on the server which I have done. Excel Services Application is Started.
Has anyone come across this and been able to resolve successfully? I am wondering if this is more security related but the security set-up looks fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Hi Sally, thanks for the response.  Problem is the issue occurs with all users not just me.
On the server-side do you know if the full Office installation must exist for this to work?
The reason I think it may be security related in some way is that on another server we can access one site collection but not another.  The first site collection shows the various libraries available and the other gives the same error: "You
can't open this location using this program. Please try a different location".
It's proving to be very frustrating!

  • Power view error while opening excel fine in SharePoint 2010

I am getting an error while opening an excel file:
    "The following features
are not supported in the browser and might not display or might display only partially:
    • Comments, Shapes, or other
    objects
    Some features, such as external
data queries, display cached data which can only be refreshed in the client version of Excel."
    Is this issue browser
    related or SharePoint related?

    Hiya,
it depends what that file contains. There are a lot of new features for Excel, Excel services in the newer versions of SharePoint and SQL server. So it really depends on which of these features your using in your excel file.
What version is your SharePoint and SQL server(database services) and SQL Reporting?
There is a pretty specific article for that error message relating to PowerPivot.

  • Getting error while opening document in SharePoint 2010

    Hi,
I got the below error while opening a document in SharePoint library.
"The document could not be opened for editing. A Microsoft SharePoint Foundation compatible application could not be found to edit the document."
    Please help me to resolve.
    Krishnasandeep

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you got the error while opening a document in SharePoint library.
The issue can occur when you have several different versions of Office installed on the same computer and you have
several different versions of the OWSSUPP DLL available which are not registered correctly.
To resolve this issue you should disable Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Support in any other version of Office installed on the machine and then repair Office.
For more information: you can refer to:
You get an error message when you open an Office file from SharePoint on a computer on which you installed more than one version of Office
In addition, please ensure that you are using Internet Explorer (32 bit) not the Internet Explorer (64-bit).
Please Verify the “Sharepoint OpenDocuments Class” addon is installed and enabled. If it is not reinstall Office.
    Please refer to:
Solved: The document could not be opened for editing. A Microsoft SharePoint Foundation compatible application could not be found to edit the document.
And, if the Office tools can’t install correctly will also cause the error.
Here is a thread about this issue, you can check it. The replies include most of the possible reasons and gave the solutions.

  • Setting up excel services on Sharepoint 2010

I am using sharepoint 2010 enterprise version, and needs some advice with setting up excel services.
When installing sharepoint 2010 enterprise, is the service application for excel services already installed. I see it listed so i assume it is, but is it better to setup a new one with its own application pool.
Also is there any thing you need to configure , or is the out of the box settings fine to work with.  I see the trusted file location is set to http://, which includes all specified URL locations as trusted locations to upload workbook from.  I
am fine with that with the moment.
But do i need to setup any data connection libraries, not sure what this is for.  Also for user-defined fujnction assembly either, or trusted data providers.
So on a  site, I can add a new web part, choose business data as the category and then choose the excel web access as the web part, and from their open the tool pane and then upload the workgroup from the document library.  That works for me.
But is there anything else i need to setup.   Choose want to make sure before i deploy in prod.
    Thanks

  • Unable to Create Work Document in SharePoint 2010 by one user

    Hi,
We have a unique issue. One user in our organisation is not able to create Word Document in our SharePoint environments.
We have SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Edition and Office 2010 Professional Edition. This issue is faced by only one user in our organization. no issues for thousands of other users.
We tested with our multiple SharePoint environments of different type of web applications. No where user is able to create Word Document using New Document functionality.
User is able to create Excel, PowerPoint documents of all extensions. User is able to upload Word Document. User is able to Edit the existing word documents both in browser and Word client.
Since it fails in all SharePoint environments, I am suspecting some common failure point like User Profile issue, CAL etc. Any suggestions from experts like you is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Sivanandham,
Could you please test two more options below with the user for narrowing down the issue scope?
Create a new content type inheriting from content type Document and then upload a new word file as the template to the new content type.
Change the word template for the content type with issue when the user creates a document from the content type.
Please also check ULS log for more detailed error for further research.
    Best regards,
    Victoria

  • PDF File not opening in browser for sharepoint 2010

Recently we have moved our web application from one server to another in Sharepoint 2010. Back up of entire web application was taken and restored in another server. But in the new server , the PDF files in the document library is not getting opened in browser.
    it always open in browser
I have already made following changes but didn,t work
Set browser file handling to Permissive from central admin
Set "open in browser" in setting s of doc library
Set the doc library file handling property using $docLib = $web.lists["Your Document Library Title"] $docLib.BrowserFileHandling = "Permissive" $docLib.Update()
    Added "AllowedInlineDownloadedMimeType.Add("Application/Pdf") in web app
Installed Adober eader in client machine
Even after trying all these, the PDF files are still opening in Client application(Adobe reader) but not in the browser
It would have been great help if anybody provide a solution for this. I have been banging head on this for two days

It would be handy if you didn't double post too.

To answer your question, you've tried most things that I normally see working, but there may be an extra solution here for you.  The solution 2 Powershell that deals with updating the Inline MimeType may help.

  • Can't open Excel files from Sharepoint 2013

I am having an issue with opening Excel files from SharePoint 2013. If I click on an excel file it comes up with the error below.
If I click Try again I get the message below also:
If I try to open Word or PDF files they open correctly in the appropriate client and I have the option of checking them out and editing them. Any ideas why this would only be happening to Excel files?
    Thanks,
    Shaun

    Hi Shaun,
I understand that the Excel files cannot be opened from SharePoint in Microsoft Excel.
Can these files be viewed in the browser?
I recommend to download a copy of the files with issue and then open them in Excel to see if the issue still occurs.
If above cannot work, I recommend to repair Office.
    Best regards.

  • Cannot open excel spreadsheet on my mac.

I cannot open Excel spreadsheet n my Mac??

Do you have Microsoft Excel on your Mac? If so, what happens when you try to open the document?
    Cheers,

  • I had Microsoft Office installed in my Macbook Air by one of the technicians in the store, it was working fine the first week but after that it started popping a notice saying it cannot verify my suscription online and now I cannot open any documents?

I just bought a Macbook Air almost a month now. When I bought it, the technician installed Microsoft Office 365 as they were having a promotion at the time. However after a week of using it, it started popping up a notice saying that it cannot verify Microsoft Office. I still managed to open the word document but as of today, it will not open. I took it to the Mac store last week, and they said that there was nothing wrong with it and they could not figure out any problem.
I don't know what to do and I am in desperate need of help. I cannot open my documents at all and I have my research paper that I need to finish writing. This is very disappointing and extremely stressful for me. If anyone has any suggestions of how this can be fixed, please let me know. I do not want to lose my hard work =(

Microsoft Office 365 is a subscription - based service. You have to pay for it... and keep paying for it... and paying for it... as in 365 days a year... or lose your hard work.
Office Home Premium is a mere $10 a month, but a convenient annual subscription is only $100 a year. This is a substantial discount to Microsoft's Office 365 business products ($150 / employee / year).
Such a deal! Are you not absolutely thrilled?
Here are some slightly more reasonable alternatives, all of which are compatible with their Office equivalents:
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
NeoOffice ($10 but older version is free if you can find it)
    OpenOffice (completely free)
    Numbers ($19.99)
    Pages ($19.99)
