Cannot open excel files in iOS4

As soon as I upgraded to iOS4, I have been unable to open excel files. Sometimes I get a can't open error, sometimes it crashes and goes back to the homescreen and with some excel files it works. A Genius at the store was able to open one after he re-saved the file on his mac but suggested this inconsistency was a bug that Apple would fix. I get a lot of excel files from many difference people for business and this is a real obstacle. Does anyone know how to fix or if Apple will. Thanks.

Many are experiencing this issue. We are an software development and Managed IT services shop and all of our clients are experiencing this same issue when trying to open an Excel file created by SSRS.

  • Possible cause of "Cannot open Excel file error"?

    Hi!
Here's my problem: one of our LabView applications creates .xls Excel
files.  However some of these files are too big to be opened into
Excel, so we need to open these files in DIAdem to analyse the data (in
fact, even the smaller ones often need to be analysed in DIAdem).
The problem is that DIAdem seems totally unable to open Excel files,
small or big, created by our LabView application or not.  The
error message appearing when we try to import Excel files is "Cannot
open Excel file"... which doesn't give any clue about the cause of the
error.   My question is: what may cause this error to
occur?  I searched both the help and the website without finding
    useful information.
The computer is running on WinXP with OfficeXP installed, and we are
using DIAdem 9.0.  If additionnal information is required, just
    let me know.
    Thanks in advance!
    Maxime B.

    Hi!
I did some experiments this morning.  First of all, the file I had
created using Excel that I tried to open yesterday just opened.  I
don't know why it didn't work yesterday, but, for now, it's
working.  Now, for my LabView-created files, I still get the same
error message.  However, if I open the files in Excel and try to
save, a warning message appears, saying that the file may not be
compatible with the text (separator:tabulation) format.  If I
ignore the warning and save the file as a .xls file, I can now import
it into DIAdem.  The problem is probably that my LabView-created
files are not "real" .xls files.  Now, this is a problem, because
I can't open some of the bigger files in Excel without having the data
truncated (Excel has a maximum of 65536 rows); last year, using DIAdem
8.X (I don't remember the exact version we had), I could open those
files without any trouble... Is there any way to get those files to be
opened with DIAdem 9.0?  I attached one of those files if it may help.
    Thanks!
    Maxime B.

  • Cannot Open Excel File in AppleWorks

My father-in-law is a new Apple convert (at my direction). I do not use AppleWorks, but that is all he has at this point. Someone sent him a simple Excel spreadsheet. AppleWorks won't open it. Keeps saying it cannot open the file. No error code. I can open it on Excel on my laptop. It's quite simple, and a small file. I have search 10 pages of this posting on such problems, but nothing seemed to point me in the right direction.
Any help here would be appreciated.

    Hello.
    You can download NeoOffice here:
    http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/download.php
    ...or at VersionTracker:

It is a free software from OpenOffice.org , it does all.

  • Cannot Open Excel File after exporting from Disco Plus

    Hi there,
I got a question from one user having issue with opening Excel file after exporting from Disco Plus.
The report has been using for a while and he is using Excel 2003 version and Discoverer 10g(10.1.2.2), he never got this kind of error before, just recently got error.
After exporting from Disco Plus he saved file on his desktop and when he tries to open the excel it says "Cannot be Accessed, can be corrupted...." but this is not from network drive since he saved file on local desktop or C drive.
Also not for all reports, only this particular report and only specific parameter, for example for parameter 2008 Feb opened successfully, but for2009 Feb he gets this error when trying to open excel.
i tried in excel 2007 also , i dont think this is Excel version error, am not sure.
Also after go live last week (we upgraded database from 9i to 10g) but i am not sure this causes ,since for one parameter working, for other parameter not working.
Actually we should get one window for Macro when we try to open excel, but he is not getting it seems.
Any ideas/thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your help

    Rod,
Thanks for your quick response on this.
Yes, we can export to other formats as well, but actually exporting is working, after saving the file on our local desktop/drive and when we try to open we get this kind messages or we cannot open the file, we should get message window for Macro to enable/disable but for this report we are not getting this either,
Also this happens only for specific parameters, like i mentioned above it works I mean excel file opens for one set of parameters but for some other set of parameters cannot open.
For example :- when we enter FEB 2008 it works, if we enter FEB 2009 it won't open the file.
    This is weird
I am still working on this issue, may be better to recreate the report again might be helpful,
    Any ideas/comments/thoughts would be great
    Thanks
    Skat

  • Cannot open Excel files on Windows share and ONLY Excel files

I'm browsing a Windows share and for whatever reason it will not let me open Excel files directly from the network location. If I view the Coverflow, I can see a a preview of the actual file as well as copy it to the desktop and open it.
I receive an error message that says "filename.xls could not be found."
I can open up any other file from the network location, but not Excel files.
I checked the file permissions and they mirror the other file types, it may be worth mentioning that I utilize network synchronization and view these files from a PC as well. I also noticed when I create a new file in that location, it will only appear in OS X and not Windows, but is still completely accessible.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks

  • Cannot open Excel file over LAN

I am trying to open an Excel file that is saved on the desktop of my iMac, from my iBook, but keeping getting a message that the file cannot be found. This seems like a strange message because I connected to the iMac over our home network, mounted my iMac home folder on my iBook, and navigated to the file, then tried to open it. I can open other files, like Word files, no problem. Only having a problem opening the Excel files. File sharing and AppleTalk have been turned on on both computers. Anyone have any idea why I cannot open these Excel files over the network? Thanks.

It appears that may be our easy workaround. I was able to open the file and edit after dragging it over to the iBook, then was able to drag it back to the iMac and drop it in. When I did, the system asked me if I wanted to replace the old one with the new edited one. I did, and then checked it on the iMac side. All the changes were present. Seems like a needless extra step, but it works.

NeoOffice is slow compared to some programs, but it is the most accurate at opening Excel spreadsheets.
iWork does not open spreadsheets because it does not have a spreadsheet program. Check back in January to see if Apple add a spreadsheet to iWork '07, and in the meantime let Apple know that you want one.

  • After upgrade, cannot open Excel file

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, am running 10.6.8.  My old excel files In MS Ofc for Mac will not open as Excel, rather they do in "Numbers."  How do I view and update my old spreadsheets?

MS Office 2004 will not run under Lion. You need to upgrade to MS Office 2008 or MS Office 2011.
If I chose to go with Numbers, Pages, etc would the Ofc files convert?
As you've seen, Pages and Numbers can open Word and Excel files, respectively. How good the conversion is depends on the documents themselves and the additional resources they use (eg, fonts). The rule of thumb is that the more complex the document and the more advanced features it uses, the more flawed the conversion will be. I should expect minimal or no problems with simple docs, such as a résumé or an expenses sheet. You may have problems with Entourage, though. You need to look into that yourself.
For higher compatibility with MS Office, you can try OpenOffice or LibreOffice, which are free, or NeoOffice, which is very cheap.

Did you try to open teh fle by double-clicking its icon? If the file was made with an older version of Office, you may get that message. Try opeing PP and, from its "File" menu, see if you can open the ppt. I've foundthat often gets around that message and then yo ucan save the file from the newer version.
If that doesn't work, consider asking in the Microsoft Office: Mac forums here:

PowerPoint is not an Apple product and it seems a lot of people around here avoid Office.

  • After file encryption in Windows 7, Excel cannot open .xlsx file

I just moved all my files to a new laptop with Windows 7.  I was using Excel 2007 and Windows XP on the OLD laptop.  The NEW laptop has Windows 7 Ultimate and Excel 2010.  I turned on file encryption (via Windows File Explorer) and now I'm
unable to open most Excel files.
The error message says: "Excel cannot open the file 'ABC.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid.  Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."
I can open the file just fine if I use the backup version from the old laptop.  It appears that the Windows 7 file encryption damaged the file from Excel's perspective.  No other applications are showing issues and not all .xlsx files are failing.
    Any ideas, please?
    Thanks,
    Ken

This is not a solution but a possible work around to see/salvage the contents of your file. If you have a Google Account
    Go to Google Docs (https://docs.google.com)
    Log in with your credentials
Upload the troublesome files (xlsx, docx etc)
If you are lucky Google may be able to salvage their contents.
Once uploaded, you can always download the file from Google in a variety of formats

I went to Task Master killed Excel and then got a new message "the document 'im5.xlsx' caused a serious error the last time it was open.  Would you like to continue opening it?" If I say "Yes" the message in the first paragraph re-appears.  However, I then cannot find Excel in Task Manager again.  I therefore assume Excel is not running but the problem persist, I cannot openthe Dashboard.  Any ideas how to solve this problem?
I run XP and Office 2007.  I have build many Dashboards on 4.5 and also run Engage 2008.

  • I get a message saying that "Excel cannot open the file

I see this most often when a file has been transferred around a lot and gets corrupted due to bad sectors on hard drives,
    bad thumb drives, etc...
Occasionally, I find a repair utility that will....kind of....fix it. You tend to lose all formatting and usually the user
would have to spend more time doing than life than simply starting from scratch. If on a file server, shadow copies
(previous versions) are a god send.
If it happens completely randomly, does it happen more often to the same group of people? Perhaps an update malfunctioned?
Reinstall Office? Try XLSX Open File Tool for recovery your documents (http://www.xlsx.openfiletool.com/)
There could be so many reasons this could happen, but all the above is where I'd start.

    Hi,
Which Excel version are you using? As far as I know, this issue is caused by malware on the affected machine. There are now two known variants of malware which causes this problem: Win32/Crilock.A and
Win32/Buma!rts. They have both been identified as a new family of ransomware.
We'd better clean your machine, run Microsoft Safety Scanner (http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx).
