Cannot open file by double clicking it

Since upgrading to 6.0.2 I can't open a file by double clicking it. I get "There was a problem sending the command to the program."
Also, clicking on a link in an email (Thunderbird) nothing happens.

Sorry, restarting the computer seems to have fixed it.

  • Mouse cannot open file with double click

    Hi all,
    Presently using latest iMac.
my files or folders on the desktop does not open with 2 left clicks. But it does if from the dock. However It will open only when I right click and mouse over to 'open' from the pull down menu. What setting did i not do correctly ?
    F. Matt

You can look in System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad and check/adjust the double-click speed there, too.
If that doesn't help, I'd suggest you test for the same issue (the apparent inability to double-click) with another mouse.

  • Can't Open Files with Double Click??

    HI
I am on 10.8.3 Mountain Lion and when using the trackpad or my wireless bluetooth mouse, I cannot open files by double clicking all of a sudden.  This is a serious problem as I cannot view my video files in Final Cut Pro.   There is no click speed preference in System Preferences and I have no idea what to do.  I don't want to have to right click to open any file on my Mac.  Does anybody have a solution for this?  Thanks

I solved the problem.  If you go to System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse and Trackpad -  You can set the speed of the double click to be much slower.   Hope this helps someone else with a similar problem.

  • My trackpad can't open file with double click

i don't know what's going on, but my trackpad can't open file with double click. i have to open it with right click, open or open with. i've tried to fix it in the system preferences, it didn't work out well.

William - you are wonderful!  I had looked at that - they were set to 'internal' which seemed like RH...but selecting the 'design view' and then reselecting 'use default editor' instead of 'auto-select editor' did it.  THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Sublime Text 2 won't open files with double click

Hi, this is my first time asking for something.
Well, i've been using Scribes, but sometimes i need tabs in my text editor, so i installed Sublime Text 2.
The problem is that i can't open files with double click, i need to use "subl filename" and that it's not funny :S
If i double click a file ST2 opens, but with a tab named "file" and without content.
Is there a fix for that?
My Arch installation (if is neccesary):
    Arch x86_64
    Openbox (stand-alone)
    PCManFM
P.D: sorry for my english D:

the reason seems to be a broken desktop file.  `/usr/share/applications/sublime-text.desktop` says `Exec=subl %U`, but it should be `%f`. Also the Aur package does not provide a `subl` symlink so you should create one.

  • Cannot open folders by double-clicking

I have an iMac (running Tiger) at work which I have recently joined to the network. With my iMac at home I am able to do anything I like without restrictions. Not so at work. I have a separate user on my machine at work with administrator privileges. This user does not log on to the network. When I log onto the network (using AdmitMac and Active Directory) my user account does not appear listed in Users when I log on as administrator.
The real problem I have however is that when I log on to the network, I cannot open folders in the finder by double-clicking. However, I can open them by user finder>file>open. Any ideas?
I also downloaded from IBM the latest update to Lotus Notes as a .sit file. Double clicking on this does nothing, even with the administrator account. Has this anything to do with Tiger and Classic?

Thanks for the "silly" tip...I changed the "double click speed" from medium to fast and nothing opened without going to "open"....seeing your message i tried moving the double click speed back to middle and the problem was instantly repaired...I just hate that the solutions can be soooo simple...thanks and remember...in computing...no idea is "silly"...LLLL

  • Opening files with double-click and FileVault

I'm experiencing an issue with 10.7.2 and something is telling me it's related to FileVault. When opening a .txt or .numbers file the associated application (TextEdit or Numbers) will open and display the document. But the pointer turns to the spinning disk and the application won't accept any clicks or keyboard shortcuts. If I alt+tab away from the application I cannot alt+tab or click the Dock icon to return to the application. After a few moments I have to Force Quit the application from the dock. I can also use kill-9 <PID> in Terminal to stop the process.
This *never* happened before 10.7.2. TextEdit will, about 20% of the time, recover after 1.5 - 2.0 minutes of me just leaving it alone.
This happens on *every* file I double-click for these applications. If I open the file from within the application (File | Open) it's fine, so I don't think this is a corrupt file problem.
I open most applications by selecting the desired document from Spotlight (command+space <filename>) - this has the same effect as double-clicking the file with the mouse.
Can this be related to FileVault? I'm open to coincidences, but because I've used 10.7 the same way (double-click or, more often, Spotlight) when opening files and haven't seen this until I started using FileVault I'm leaning towards that.
I've not made any modifications to the OS - there are no auto-load programs and I've installed ony about five applications that didn't ship with OS X 10.7.
    Anyone else seen this issue?

This was getting so frustrating I turned off FileVault and the problem went away. That's too bad, but there it is.

  • Excel 365 still won't open files by double clicking!

I know this issue has been posted before but, unlike many, I've started with a clean slate - a brand new machine running Windows 7 Professional SP1. The only Office product I've installed is 365. Like most others, I can open Word and PowerPoint files by
double clicking but Excel refuses point blank to play ball. I get the "Problem sending data to the program" error.
I've tried the multitude of "fixes" spread around the forum and the net - to the extent that I can't remember which I've already done when I come across them - and nothing changes.
Surely (?) someone at Microsoft must have picked up that there is a real problem here, affecting a multitude of users. So why isn't there a unified fix available? Let me put that another way, does anyone know of a unified fix that's available all in one
    place?

    Hi,
I have definitely heard your frustration, we can try these methods to check if it works.
Is that error message “There was a problem sending the command to the program”? If so, we can
turn off the “Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)” setting. Run “Fix it for Windows 7”.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211494/en-au
On the other hand, maybe this problem is not in Excel, it is in Windows.  We need to associate the file type with
    corresponding program:
Right-click the Office       file that you want to open.
Select Open with,       then click Choose default program.
Select the appropriate       program to associate with the file, click to select the
Always use the       selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click
    OK.
Next, if the issue still exists, we can choose Run and enter Excel.exe /regserver .This will cause Excel to start up, re-register all of its registry keys, then quit. Now, try opening your Excel files.
    Feel free to post back.

  • Updated iPhoto 11 and cannot open Events with double click or any other way. I can only view those photos by creating an album from all of them, then I can open the album and edit or delete etc.  Any one have that problem?

After upgrading to iPhoto 11 and the latest upgrade 9.4.1 (701 67) I cannot open any Event.  The normal double click does not work, nor anything else I have tried. The only way I can view the photos in an Event is to make an Album of it, and then I can easily open it with a double click and edit and delete, arrange photos etc.  Anyone have this problem. Any ideas about how to open an event?

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Cant open files via double click on file icons

    hello
i recently wiped my drive and did a clean install of 10.5.1 (lepperds).
    here are specs for my machine:macprobook 2.33ghz intel core 2 duo w/ 2gb 667mhz ddr2 sdram, 120gb HD (72.25GB available), serial # W2186148K4Y, username:billysmac password:••••••••••••
now, when i double click files created in PhotoShop & Image Ready (not sure about other apps / files), the application will open but the file i originally double clicked does not open.
the same is true if i try to open file via: apple + single click on file >>>>> then drag down to 'open with app xyz" in the sub menu that appears. app opens but file does not.
the only way to open a file is to activate PS or IR followed by: menu bar >>> file >>> open >>>> finder window >>>> nav to & select file >>> click open in finder window.
furthermore, i have my iphoto set to edit photos in PhotoShop, but when i click 'edit', nothing happens.
this is a legit registered copy of PS & IR so im not sure whats going on. when i did a wipe, i backed up all my apps, account, files & folders, etc. to an ext HD. after the syst s.w. install, i dragged all the apps into the apps foleder. some apps wouldnt work any more, so i reinstaled them PS / IR did work though, except this issue, so i didnt boter reinstalling.
    any suggestions?
    thanks

  • Why can't I open files with double click, etc?

    Hello, all,
I have been having problems with my MacBook (Aluminum late 2008, I think, OS 10.5). It runs slowly; files on the desktop and in my "Macintosh HD" often won't open with double-click but have to be opened with File-->Open; there are Word Work Files that won't go away; the trackpad is often stiff and not very responsive; clicking on the mouse is very stiff, despite very easy settings. In short, a lot of things are sluggish. Sometimes, also, I get the spinning beach ball, but not all the time.
I have run disk permissons repair from Disk Utility many times (both from the desktop and from the MacBook install disk); I have replaced the directory with Disk Warrior at least twice; I have verified that the disk is OK; I have zapped the PRAM; and done other things of that kind.
I took the MacBook to an Apple Store yesterday. It had been unplugged and much to my surprise, most everything seemed to be working all right. When I opened it today, however, I found everything as it was before I took it to Apple. Including the Word Work files, which I thought were gone.
If I recall correctly, this started when I was working on a long editing project in Word, but I don't know whether that has anything to do with what has happened. I've done similarly long projects before, and this never happened.
I could try trashing the Word Work files (there seem also to be quite a lot of folders with "recovered" files), but I don't want to do that unless I can be assured that nothing bad will come from doing that.
I know this seems quite comprehensive, and may involve several issues, but I'm really unhappy about this and would love to think there is something more I can do, apart from returning to the Apple Store. Besides everything else, how can I khow that I won't find, again, that the MacBook will work fine there but goes back to its troubled state when I return?
    Clues, anyone?
    Thanks,
    jenny

    Hi, Mike,
I have 211.59 left out of total HD space of 232.57.Space should not be a problem. I'll try using Activity  Monitor today. I have 2 GB of memory. But since this is the first time I[ve had this problem, I don't see how it could be a problem with memory, do you?
I finished the project more than a week ago. After I shut down the computer, it temporarily returned to normal but subsewuently started acting odd again, although I've done nothing but email since I turned it on again.
I am going to try getting rid of the Word Work files and see whether that helps. I am wondering whether the book I was working on had something wrong with it (it was written in NeoOffice but opened in Word), or my copy of Word has gotten corrupted. Although I haven't used Word since I finished with the book.
Sorry this font is so tiny, but although I was able to choose my font in my original message, there doesnt' seem to be a place to do that here. At least, I don't see it.
I'll get back to you on the Activity Monitor. Thanks.

  • Excel 2013 will not open file using double click

I have a problem with Excel 2013  running on Windows 7 Pro (64). When double clicking an Excel file from Windows Explorer  Excel launches but opens a blank worksheet and shows me an error message (german: sinngemäß: "die Weitergabe eines anderen
Programms ist gescheitert"). The only way to view the document is by opening Excel and browsing to the saved file.
I have read similar forum entries which address this problem in older versions of Excel. I have tried every solution but none of them worked.
I already added the registry setting for shell open and set the Ignore Other Applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) (unchcked).
The problem still persists. When I first installed Office 2013 it all worked fine. I believe the problem occured after installing Project 2013, but I am not quite sure about that. Reinstalling Excel did not help.
    I´d appreciate any help,
    Regards Stefan Hassel

    Hi,
    Check the following steps:
    1. Make sure that Excel is not running (exit the program).
    2. Click the Start button to displays the Start menu.
    3. From the Start menu, choose Run. Windows displays the Run dialog box.
    4. In the Open box, enter the full path name to your Excel program, followed by the /regserver switch. If the full path name includes spaces, surround the full path name by quote marks. The following is an example of what you can enter in the Open box
    (your path may be different):
         "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver

  • Plese help me ! can't open files with double clicking icons...

at the first, sorry about my English. (i'm japanese and english is my second language so..) anway.... i can't open the files on desk top by double click. if i go to Finder then i can open files... and some files i can open by double click. i downloaded Limewire but i can't install it because my couble click is not working for that. but i can double click to open photoshop, safari or email or some other things in the dock. and i couldn't open up the games either.. doesn anybody knows what's happened to my son's computer? it's a iMac flat panel G4. and OS X 10.3.9. Thank you sooo much!!

Saw your response and started to write to you for help also but have, with one final try, found PART of my problem. I have a Logitech wired optical mouse that worked with everything except opening desktop volumes when I double clicked on them. I could open applications and documents within the Finder window....just not the desktop volume icons.
I ran Disk Utility........verified all the volumes........repaired all permissions, unplugged mouse and reset. Logitech software is up to date.. I've never had this happen before.
What I discovered was that I was double clicking to open the volumes, but had the mouse set for single click. It's still a little strange because I changed it to double click to open and now it opens with double OR single click. Now I can open the volumes but it won't allow me to move the Finder windows that open. I can't drag or move them on the desktop; have to use them where they open.
Any suggestions for me, I hope? Thanks.

  • Opening files with double click

Hi, I'm using photoshop CS 6 and Yosemite 10.10.2 and wondering why photoshop is no more able to open files with a single double click. It opens the program but not the file. Second double click is necessary. Really annoying.
It is also irritating that ADOBE asks me everytime before it opens ps if I want to take part in a survey. I took part several times to get rid of it, but the asking continued ...This is harassing – does it stop when I buy the cloud???
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    regards from Munich

This was getting so frustrating I turned off FileVault and the problem went away. That's too bad, but there it is.

    Hi-
Go to System Preferences, Mouse, and look at the far right of the pane, where it says Double-Click.
Perhaps the Double-click speed is set too fast, and you are not double clicking fast enough.
Go ahead and move the slider for Double-Click speed more towards Slow (to the left) and try again.
