Cannot open files from USB external harddrive in XP

Used this same harddrive in previous iMac OSX10.4 / Windows XP computer and it worked perfectly. Also used in computer labs for Macs and Windows at school. Never any problems. Fresh new Macbook pro and XP PRO install and while in XP the drive is visible but you cannot open a file directly from the folders in windows explorer. You can however drag a file to the desktop and it will open it there. There is something in the file path which XP / bootcamp is not liking? Files open perfectly from my XP on my HP. Ideas?

Went into administrative/disk management and poked around. Just changed drive letters and all is OK. Thanks anyway.

  • How do I open files from an external drive?  It's plugged into the second slot to the end.

How do I open files from an external drive?  It's plugged into the second slot to the end.  Did I plug it into the right place and how do I find the drive when trying to attach a file in an email?

Files on an external hard drive open just like files on the internal drive - but I get the idea that you are having a problem just finding and seeing those files. Is that correct?

  • Mk:@MSITStore cannot open file from within RoboHelp

Have recently upgraded to RoboHelp 8 and now see the much discussed "Cannot open the file: mk:@MSITStore:<path>" error but only when trying to view .chm files from RoboHelp for Word, by clicking "View Primary Layout".  Weirdly enough, some projects display the .chm correctly when clicking "View Result" right after generating the help file, some projects do not.  Viewing .chm directly from output location is always fine.  For very small projects, the "View Primary Layout" button seems to work.  For very large projects, the error message always occurs.  I've un-registered and re-registered hhctrl.ocx as well as downloaded, replaced and registered the previous ocx version (4.73.8412.0) as well as re-registered itss.dll  The OS is Windows XP Professional with IE 7.  Suggestions please?  Thanks!

I recently ran into a problem viewing some pdfs and Word Documents in a generated html help file.
    Setup:
pdfs and .docs in baggage files
links to the baggage files created in tables
    2 tables in each topic
pdfs/docs in first table in each topic opened without a problem
pdfs/docs in second table would not open -  address bar display:
    (Example)
    mk:@MSITStore:C:\EOCs\!SSL!\Microsoft_HTML_Help\BlueMedicare_EOCs.chm::/2012_EOCs/2012_WS_ Book.pdf
(Pause for much gnashing of teeth, pulling of hair, angst, frustration and thinking) but no pdf (or Word doc)
I can't change registry entries or any other computer settings.  No administrative rights.
Anyway, it couldn't be an outdated registry entry because within one project, some pdfs and docs displayed as expected and others didn't.
Checked to see what the differences were in the tables/cells that worked vs the ones that didn't.
Looking at the HTML,  I found "target=_blank" in each row of the tables that failed to display a baggage file.
I replaced "target=_blank" with no replacement text -  I left Replace with blank.
Voila!  All pdfs and docs open just as expected.
    I hope this helps someone.

  • Cannot open file from Bridge after saving in Photoshop CS3

I was working on three images in Photoshop CS3, when I went to open them from Bridge for review, two of three files were reduced to tiny white squares with a dogear in the top right corner, a little blue bounding box containing three tinier red green and blue somethings so small I couldn't even see what they were with my jewellery spec.
Nothing happened when I clicked on them, no error message, nothing. I managed to get one of them in 'reveal' - which opened up a larger blue bounded box with the red button containing a cross with the message 'cannot open as not right kind of file'.
What to do please? I don't want to spend hours on an image and hope it will open afterwards. Thankyou.

Thankyou for taking the time to respond. I did notice that I'd forgotten to place a . after the file name and before the extension - ie soiphotopsd, instead of soiphoto.psd, and renamed them and the opened as psds. I would have thought that Photohop CS3 with all it's bells and whistles could have provided a helpful popup/error message to this effect when saving images though!
I still have an old file I haven't been able to open, the icon of which is simply a small blue and white box with the letters pmg on the bottom. I tried to rename the file same as, but nothing seemed to work so far. Will just keep plugin away - forgive the pun.
    Thanks again.

  • Cannot Open Files From Old Logic

I used to work on Logic 4.8 Platinum, until my usb key was damaged. Now I cannot open any of my old songs in Logic 8. What do I do? How can I obtain a replacement usb key from a version that is so old and discontinued?

I believe you have to open your 4.8 songs in Logic 5 or above; then you can open these songs as projects in Logic 8.
Maybe you even have to go via the Logic 6 route, I´m not 100% certain, but something along these lines anyhow.

  • Cannot open file from old PC into Firefox

I have a folder from my old PC (that was onWindows 7) that a teccie loaded for me so i could access my old files. However when i locate the folder/file, and double click it, and get the 'You have chosen to open file..' etc box, which has 'Firefox (default) or other (i chose FF) and click ok, i just get the same box come up again as a new tab, and each time i click ok it does the same ad infinitum! How do i actually open a particular file in this folder? many thanks. p.s. i am not very technical so any advice needs to be relatively simple, thanks

What kinds of files are they? Can you see the file extensions? Windows may be hiding those, unhide them using the steps in this Microsoft support article: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions].
If Firefox does not think it can open a file, forcing it to try can create that infinite loop problem. You may be able to remove the dysfunctional association in the Options dialog:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Applications
Or if it can't be found there, you can delete the settings file that Firefox uses to store the associations to return to the default settings for unrecognized files. Here's how:
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * Help menu > Troubleshooting Information
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button
Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
    * File menu > Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename '''mimeTypes.rdf''' to something like mimeTypes.old
Then you can start Firefox back up again and it should create a fresh mimeTypes.rdf file.

  • Simply cannot open file from within Illustrator CS3

When working in CS3 in 10.5.8 I go to open file and select a document nothing happens. It is as if I did not attempt the command. This just began happening about a week ago. I've been on CS3 for over 2 years. In order to open each file - I must locate the file in its folder and double click on it to open the file. However going to open recent files does work. I have tried re-launching Illustrator by holding down the Shif/Option/Cmmd to refresh the prefs but that did not work. Any ideas? thanks.

    Mike Gondek2 wrote:
Good job on your troubleshooting so far. Answer could be in the OS rather than within Illustrator. Try running Applications>> Utilities >> Disk Utility and fixing the permissions.
Mike has the probably cause of this if repairing the permissions with the disk utility does not work do not give up on this procedure.
You can do it manually in case the disk utility over looks this folder.
Control or right click on the folder where these files are and then go to get info and where it says Ownership and Permissions  check to see if all the users listed have permission to use the contents of the folder, it will say read/write.
This can also be true for specific files and for directors higher up like folder for a client that contains these other folders,or partition of a drive which contains the folders and parent folders as well as for an entire hard drive so you have to check the entire hierarchy on occasion. If it is a foder or higher directory there is the option oncce you set the permissionfor the directory to have it apply to all files and directories contained within.
Mike's advice and the folder are fine then it might be a corrupt settings folder. So you can try this as well.
    1. Quit Illustrator.
2.Go to User/username/Library/Preferences/ Adobe illustrator CS4 Settings and trash the settings folder, the whole folder not just the contents of the folder..
    3. Start Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new preferences file.

  • I cannot open iphoto from my external hard drive.  its there but when i open it, it just opens my current iphoto library.

anyone have any clues about this?    I backed up my iphoto library last november.  Now i would like to open it up and use some of those images.  but when i plug in my external HD and try to open the iphoto library, all that happens is it opens my current iphoto library.    i know all of my images are on the HD bc i can control click the iphoto library in the HD and click 'show ackage contents' and all images are there.  plus the amount of space is correct.   I do not understand why i cannot pull up the images???   any help would be greatly appreciated     there has to be an explination, as well as a better way to retrieve all those images other than dragging each file indivdually and resaving it back to the computer.

The way to switch default libraries in iPhoto is to depress the option key and launch iPhoto - use the select library command to switch to a new default library which will remain the library until you switch again
And note that if you make changes to your backup library it no longer a backup but a different library

  • Itunes Freezing when reading a music file from my external harddrive

    I am using I tunes version 8.2.1 and Mac OS X 10.4.11
I am using an external hard drive to house my ITunes Library. I have used this set up before with out issue. I then had a hard drive failure. I recovered my music and was able to reformat. Now when I try to play a song or do anything in ITunes while the hard drive is attached, Itunes is really slow and most of the time does not play the song. I tried uninstalling Itunes but that did nothing and I CAN NOT UPGRADE TO ITUNES 10.
Is this an issue with ITunes or is it the harddrive?

a wma file is a Microsoft file. it will only play in Windows media player and afew other players that have basicly paid Microsoft a fee to have there players able to play wma files. iTunes will not play wma files at all BUT itunes makes it easy as pie to convert those files into something it can play long as there not protected wma's you may have bought online. First goto edit, preferencs. Once there in the settings, hit the "Advance" tab at top, you will see 3 more tabs appear below. hit the "Import" tab there you will most likly want to set it to "MP3" so you will be able to play all songs u import or rip from CDs on iTunes and other apps. Below that you can set the bit rate. after that just rightclick all the songs with the ! beside them and select Import or convert section to MP3

  • Cannot open files from Application Navigator without JDeveloper freezing

Completely bewildered by this... please help.
Been using JDeveloper 11.1.1.0.1 Build JDEVADF_MAIN.BOXER_GENERIC_081203.1854.5188 (pointing to Java 1.6.0.16) for a few months now. Every week or so I take a copy of my project (just take the whole project directory out of the JDeveloper/mywork directory) on my workstation and place on another identically configured workstation. This week, when I tried to do that and open JDeveloper on that 2nd workstation, JDeveloper froze. After reboots and retries, as far as I can get is to be able to open JDeveloper, single click on files in the Application Navigator (their properties show up in the Structure window), but if I try to open any of the source files (either by double clicking on them or right click -> open), JDeveloper freezes.
What's weird is that I tried uninstalling Java and Jdeveloper on that 2nd workstation and reinstalling a fresh Java and Jdeveloper instance - with none of my code or projects -- just a clean off the oracle.com version of JDeveloper -- and I still had the same problem. I created a brand new application, project, and new class and I still cant click on the Class1.java to edit or view it without JDeveloper freezing.

    Arun,
    Thank you for the response.
Many apologies - please ignore the exception I posted. The C:\Program Files\JDeveloper\modules was missing because on the last time I re-installed JDeveloper I forgot to copy that directory.
Nonetheless, I reinstalled JDeveloper (again - this time correctly!) and I am still having the same symptoms (but no exception). I run jdev.exe from the command prompt, JDeveloper opens, I can create a new application, project, and class/.java file, but I cannot double click on the .java file to view or edit it. JDeveloper freezes and there is no exception in the command window.
I tried running Process Monitor when I double click on the .java file to see if there are any obvious errors. (See the log below.) However, I'm not sure if these are "normal"/expected errors or not.
I don't know what else to do at this point. Any other suggestions you can give are welcome.
    Thanks.
(PS - I tried Puthanampatti's suggestion of modifying the ide.conf and jdev.conf, but received an error, "Unable to create an instance of the Java Virtual Machine. Located at path: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_16\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll", so I just restored the original ide.conf and jdev.confs to get rid of that error.)

  • InCopy CS6 "Cannot Open File" from InDesign CC

I'm trying to review copy recently posted by my designer. I'm using InCopy CS6 and she recently upgraded to InDesign CC. We never had a problem before, but now I'm getting the following error:
I'm running Windows 8 and she's on a Mac (not sure which OS).
    Any thoughts?

For real? I can't believe that the latest version of the standalone InCopy can't play with InDesign CC. My designer is a contractor and just spent a lot of money to upgrade to CC, and my employer didn't want to pay for all of CC, so they just got me Incopy CS6.

  • How do I open my imovie files from an external hard drive on a new computer

I'm trying to open my files from an external harddrive and the I don't know how to open it on another computer...the "event" files are confusing and I can't open a file of imovie 08....thanks!

If you used the Finder to move the files, iMovie will have lost track of them. iMovie holds the locations of the Event files, and Project files contain references to those locations. If you move the files, iMovie has no way of knowing where they are.
If you can, first move all the files back to their original locations. Plug in the external drive. Open iMovie and move the files in iMovie's interface (help explains how, but basically, just drag and drop in the event pane).
Then you can connect the drive to the new computer, and iMovie will see them.
