Cannot Open Files in PS CS5

Hi folks..I am unable to open files/create new files in Photoshop CS5....the P logo in the top left is greyed out (don't know if this is significant)..
Can anyone help here?
Thanks!
Debbie

The Ps logo is gray by design in Photoshop CS5.
However, being unable to create or open files is out of the ordinary.
Do you have a display with 1024 x 768 pixels or larger?  It's a known issue that the Save dialog won't come up on displays that are smaller than that.
If that's not the issue, there have been several other users who have reported issues opening or creating files in recent days...

Unfortunately I don't think anyone's been able to get to the bottom of what the various folks who are experiencing these failures have in common, or even come up with a workaround short of rebooting Windows.  You folks all need to list what hardware and software you have to try to find out what you have in common.

  • Cannot open file exported from CS5 as .idml into CC2014.

I'm trying to open a file created in InDesign CS5 in the newest CC version of InDesign.
It is a large (2GB) file comprised entirely of placed images.
I found a thread that suggested exporting as idml.
I did export from CS5 as idml which made the file size a mere 195 MB.
When I tried to open it in CC2014 I got the error message:
Cannot open the file "name.indd"  Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in
that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.
I had quit from CS5 before attempting to open the file in CC2014.
I had thought that exporting as .idml would change the file type suffix from
.indd to .idml but I'm not in the weeds enough to be sure about that.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.
    Roger

I had thought it might be.
I preserved my original (created in CS5) and saved a copy
to try it in CC 2014. The copy wouldn't open in CC.
I deleted this copy and tried again with a new copy
Tried to open in CC - no go.
Opened the new copy in CS5 - no problem.
If the file were corrupt, would it still open in CS5, or is this
    a forward compatibility issue?

  • Cannot open file in Indesign CS5

This is the error message I get:
    Please help

Since you've shown us the folder contents it's a good bet it isn't in use (no lock file). And it doesn't look like the file is mis-named as there doesn't seem to be anything else there that would be the .indd file (but just in case, open it in TextEdit and paste the first few lines here so we can see what the file header says), so the most likely case is the file is damaged. Is that on a removable device of some sort?
You can try the tool at Repair corrupt InDesign Adobe files on Mac OS X  or send me a link to the file by private message and I'll try the recovery tool I have for Windows.

  • INDD CS6 error: "InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format.

Working in CS6 on Mac OS X 10.7.5: When I double click an INDD file in the Finder, I get the following error from InDesign:
"The document "doc name" could not be opened. InDesign cannot open files in the "InDesign CS5.5 Document" format."
This just started recently and I have not been able to figure out why. I have not updated INDD or OS X. I can't think of anything else that changed, other than maybe a Java update. Have not updated to the latest OS yet.
The files I'm trying to open are files I created with CS6 - as recent as a few minutes ago.  I can open them fine using the File>Open command in InDesign so I can open them, but I can't open them by double clicking them in Finder or dragging them to the INDD icon in the dock.
The info in Finder's "Get Info" window says they are CS6 files set to open in CS6 and I have permissions to read and write. They are not locked.
This is not incapacitating, but rather annoying and slows me down since this is one of the most common ways I open files.
    Any suggestsion would be appreciated.

Probably won't work because it sounds like an OS problem of some sort, but you can try trashing the prefs. See Replace Your Preferences

  • CS5 InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format

I'll be working in InDesign CS5 with no problems then at some point I'll double click on an InDesign file and a window comes up and says - InDesign cannot open files in the InDesign CS5 document format. Sometimes when this happens I have to completely reboot my whole system before I can get InDesign to function correctly. Is this a flaw with CS5? Did not happen with previous versions. It doesn't always happen but I can't figure out what causes it. Would appreciate anyones help. I'm getting to really HATE InDesign!!

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled, but I did just switch over to another workstation using Time Machine. The previous system was Leopard. This one is running Snow Leopard.
I'm not sure how to parse this. When you say "switch over to another workstaiton using Time Machine" do you mean, "started using another machine that happens to be using Time Machine for backups and is also running 10.6 instead of 10.5"?
Or do you mean, "Used the Time Machine program to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6?" If you mean the second one, well, I can't say I am surprised that things are messed up. And that would make your problem rather different than the other posters, which is good reason for you to have started your own thread (and thus your own solution)....
I'm a little bit leary of getting in and changing things in Terminal, without understanding what I am changing. Plus this is a workstation at work, so if I screw something up, that is not a good things, and I don't have time to spend a day fixing things back up again, with the way our workload is.
Well, you can find a lot of marginal documentation about lsregister and Launch Services, but I wonder whether your understood the ramifications of messing with Time Machine (or maybe I have misinterpretted you!). I'd be surprised if you found another way to fix this, other than uninstall/reinstall.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrade Plug-ins error (Cannot Open File)

I was working on a document in CS3 as a final thesis for my masters work. I was using a Blurb template in order to export the file for printing. In between working on the file, one afternoon I could no longer open the file and was met with the follwing error:
    Cannot Open File
    IMAGE.RPLN
    IMAGE FILTERS.RPLN
    HYPERLINKS.RPLN
    "Cannot open "Masters_book dec.indd".
Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest
versions, or upgrade to the latest version of
    Adobe InDesign."
I hadn't changed any other files on my computer or ran any updates. I was simply met with the error when I tried launching the application. After trying to run necessary updates I was still met with the same error message. I downloaded the trial version of CS5 on another machine and tried to open it and was once again met with the above error message. I have a back up of the file that I can use but it still represents a lot of lost work if I have to resort to an old file.

I probably shouldn't dwell, on this, but I can get really worked up over it.
I come from the Cosmos and I can assure you we have sent no "Rays" to your puny Earth Planet today!(*)
Since this concerns a CS3 file and I haven't seen posts of others having the same issue, either with CS3 or with any other version, I have to take it as a One-Time Fluke.
I'm pretty firmly convinced this never happens. There are real problems and even if we only see them once, they are happening hundreds and thousands of times and going unreported and undetected, but they are no less real. In fact, because of the reporting bias towards repeatable problems, they are probably causing added frustration and confusion without being detected or fixed properly. So, IMNSHO, we owe a larger duty to pay attention to so-called "unreproducible" bugs.
(You can imagine how well these conversations with Adobe Support go...)
Of course, in this case, it's probably really hard to find the problem. And since it's effectively an end-of-life'd product that is 3 versions behind the released product and at least 4 versions behind the development product, well, it's hard to lose too much sleep over it.
(*) Yes, I know, this incident would not have been "today." Consider it time dilation.

  • In CS4, "Cannot open file" "Please upgrade your plug-ins..."

    Greetings,
I am using InDesign CS4 on a PC. I am trying to open an .indd file created by our marketing department. I don't know what version of InDesign they use nor whether they work on Macs or PCs.
When I double-click to open the file, I get a "Cannot Open File" popup box. The box reads "Cannot open docname.indd. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign." It then lists 18 different plugins:
    ASSIGNMENTS.RPLN
    TEXT.RPLN
    SPREAD.RPLN
    MASTER PAGE.RPLN
    TEXT ATTRIBUTES.RPLN
    .... and 13 more.
When I go to Help > Configure Plug-Ins, I can see that I do have all of these plug-ins. But apparently they are not the latest versions.
Anyone know how I can update these plugins? I have searched for them on the Adobe website, but no joy.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jen

It's a safe bet that they are working in CS5. The only way to get those plugins is to install CS5 on your machine.
You could ask your marketing department to export an IDML file from CS5, which you can open up in CS4, but it might fail horribly (and it's guaranteed to lay out incorrectly if they've used any tools in CS5 that aren't in CS4). If you rely on this workflow, by regularly using a document going back and forth between CS5 and CS4, chances are very, very good that it will fail at a critical moment. The only really safe thing to do here is to get everyone using the same version of InDesign.

  • Plug-ins - "Cannot open File"

I  have received a file from overseas which looks like the CS5 indesign icon, but which I cannot open through my CS5 indesign software. The message SHAREDCONTENT.RPLN first appears and then after clicking OK to open anyway, Cannot Open File appears with a list of missing plug-ins. The message reads: Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Indesign. I have not been able to find these plug-ins online and I'm not financially able to upgrade just yet! Any ideas anyone?

Another alternative that you can use, is ask for the IDML version of the document along with the assets like images and fonts used in the original document. You can open IDML version of the document in CS4, CS5, CS5.5 AND CS6 versions of InDesign.
Once open just relink the images sent as assets to you and place the fonts in the required folder and you are all set to use your doucment, save the document in the INDD format and you have your InDesign file. This will be an easy way for you as it will save you installation time for ID CS5.5 and also allow you to not upgrade and buy a license for it if you don't require it.
    Thanks,
    -Manan

How to fix file when it says, "Cannot open file " ". Adobe Indesign does not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file may be missing, or file may be open in another application." It worked one second, I saved and closed the file, then tried to reopen and now it won't work. I am using Adobe InDesign CS5. It is the only version on my comp. I have tried opening on another comp & copying the file – same error comes up. PLEASE HELP

First check the version of the document with Jongware's script "Identify.jsx" (ExtendScript/JavaScript).
    You can find it here:
    [Ann] Identify Your InDesign File
If it is CS 5.5 or above, you need someone to open it in the version the script says and export an IDML representation from that. Another way would be to install a 30days version of CS6 or above (CC) and do it yourself.
In regards of the script showing a result for InDesign files higher than CS6:
    CS7 = CC v9
    CS8 = CC v10 = CC-2014 or CC2014.1

  • Illustrator cannot open files in the "Adobe Illustrator Document" format.

I recently upgraded from CS4 to CS5.5 on my Mac (10.6.7), and now when I try to open a .ai file, I get the error:
Illustrator cannot open files in the “Adobe Illustrator Document” format.
Google doesn't seem to be much help other than one other person who had the same issue. Any idea why Illustrator can't open Illustrator documents?

Actually, quitting Illustrator and re-launching it solved it. It was the first time I had launched Illustrator after installing it, so maybe it had something to do with that.

  • InCopy 8 (CS6): Missing Plugins, Cannot Open File

A client and I have used InCopy for several years with no issues. After upgrading to CS6, though, we are both getting this error when opening InDesign files that have embedded preflight profiles:
    Missing Plug-ins, Cannot Open File
    Package and Preflight.InDesignPlugin
I've tested this on two machines (both Macs) and can confirm that it happens only with embedded preflight profiles. My client is having the same experience on his brand-new iMac (with no previous CS6 installations).
Documents without embedded preflight profiles open normally.
Extension Manager reports that the Package and Preflight plugin is loaded -- but from a nonexistent folder:
This folder existed in CS5.5 but not now. Both my client and I have uninstalled and reinstalled InCopy CS6 with no change.
After clicking through the error to load the document, selecting Option+Command+InCopy > About InCopy to display component information shows that the plugin is both "used" and "missing."
No big deal (we can click through this) but annoying and strange. Anyone else running into this?
    Steve

Yes, I see it here too. Luckily it's just annoying. Please make sure and report it to the bug reporting form.

I am trying to open CR2 files from a Cannon EOS 1DX camera in Photoshop CS6 and I have already updated the Camera Raw Plug in but Photoshop is still giving me the cannot open files dialog box? Help?

Canon 1DX support was added to ACR in version 6.7, 7.1.  An updated CS6 should be at level ACR 8.6.  If your ACR is not at level 8.6 try using CS6 menu Help>Updates.  If that does not install ACR 8.6 try downloading the ACR and DNG 8.6 converter and see if ACR 8.6 will install into your CS6.

So how do I access the file?

Sounds like you opened and saved it in CC, so now you need to go back to CC and either complete the project there, or export to IDML to take it back into CS6.

  • Error Message when installing updates: "Cannot open file (-3001)"

I have a MacBook3.1. with Mac OS 10.5.7. Three days ago I installed 5 to 6 updates for iTunes, iDVD, AirPort Express, Java, etc. After the installation, I could not access the internet because my AirPort wireless on the Mac was off (non-existent). I could not even scan for my network. I could not access iTunes, in fact when I opened iTunes, the application got stuck and I could not even "force quit" the application. I went to the Apple Store and was told to Re-install the original OS discs (10.5) received with the MacBook, which I did. After the installation things seemed to be back to normal. I was able to access the internet, etc. However, I could not open iTunes because and I paraphrase "the iTunes version that created/supported the application is not.....". OK so I need to update the software. Now, when I tried to update the software with the newly installed "re-install" 10.5 OS I received the following message:
"A networking error has occurred: Cannot open file (-3001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."
Meanwhile, I was searching the internet googling the above message. So internet access was not the issue. I decided to create a "test" admin account to see if I could update from another account. Low and behold, I was able to access and update each new software update from the new "test" account and ultimately open iTunes from my personal (main) account.
Very confused and could use some guidance. Any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
    My general rules:
Never install more than one update at a time - especially those requiring a reboot.
Whenever possible, use the manual updates and for OS updates, always use the manual combo update.
If a problem does occur, reinstall any "bad" updates with manual updates. Yes, they can be reapplied.
    Again, one at a time.
