Cannot open imovie projects

Hello,
I've spent the afternoon looking for answers and I've tried everything but still no luck.
I've been working at a project for the past week. This afternoon, imovie crashed when i was editing my project. When I opened imovie, the project was gone from the "project library." I navigated to the imovie project folder, and sure enough, the file was there. Problem is, imovie can't open it. I've clicked, dragged but nothing works.
I've even deleted the "com.apple.imovie8.plist" file but it doesn't help. Finally, i checked the console message and here's what i got:
6/19/10 6:42:20 6/19/10 iMovie[246] Skipping loading of project "South America" due to error: Unable to load project
6/19/10 6:42:20 6/19/10 iMovie[246] CoreText: Bad Glyph Found In 'kern' Subtable Of CTFont <name: Futura-Medium, size: 19.330000, matrix: 0x0>
CTFontDescriptor <attributes: <CFBasicHash 0x9bc870 [0xa0028ee0]>{type = mutable dict, count = 1,
entries =>
1 : <CFString 0xa006cd78 [0xa0028ee0]>{contents = "NSFontNameAttribute"} = <CFString 0xa0025fa8 [0xa0028ee0]>{contents = "Futura-Medium"}
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks!!!!

This means that your original media files were not in your events folder but only links to them, with the originals stored somewhere else.  If you look in the events folders inside your iMovie Events folder  you will probably see aliases to the clips rather than the clips themselves.  If you get info on the alieases they may identify where the original was stored (or they may say the original can't be found).
You must have moved your events folder at some point which broke the links so iMovie now doesn't know where to find them.  You can still see the thumbnails in the timeline because these are small low resolution files which are in your project file.  Unless you can move your folders back to exactly how they were when you created the project (and on the same computer) you will have to re-import the originals and re-insert them into the timeline.
You could as an alternative try putting one of the clips manually into your events folder in place of the broken alias to it and see if it appears in the timeline when you relaunch iMovie.  If this works (I'm not sure if it will) you can do it with the rest and not have to touch the project timeline.

  • Cannot open Book Project in iPhoto

I'm working on a Mac OSX 10.9.5 and iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17).  Last January of this year I started a Book and have worked on it at winter and spring--it is about 90 pages long with text and photos.  Yesterday I went to open the project and all I got was a spinning wheel -- it will not open up. I went  in to Utilities and repaired the permissions and I repaired the photo library by clicking Alt and Command--still cannot open the project.  Would anyone have a solution?

Hi Old Toad: Thanks for the prompt reply.  I could NOT locate the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist.
I downloaded Find any File and got this:

  • I cannot open my project.

I cannot open my project. The dialogue box tells me that my G Drive (External) is missing, yet I can see its icon on my desktop.  Nothing in the G Drive will open.  It was fine when I was last editing this project.

    Hi
Nothing in the G Drive will open.
Not without starting FinalCut - just in the Finder - either ?
If it doesn't open in the finder - it's broken and neither You or FinalCut can reach it - it needs to be repaired.
First to be tried is to start Disk Util tool
    • Does it show up here ? - if so -
    • Run Repair Permissions (most probably grayed out - then test next step)
    • If still problematic when tried to be opened
    • Run Repair Hard Disk

  • TS1702 I cannot open iMovie and do not want to reinstall the ap as I have five finished movies within it and would therefore lose about ten hours of work putting them together. The app crashes every time I try to open it. Any ideas?

I Cannot open iMovie ad the app keeps crashing. I don't want to reinstall as I will loose all of the work (I have spent about ten hours setting up five movies).

Try double-clicking the Home button to bring up the recent Apps tray. Touch and hold on the iMovie icon til it shakes and a "-" appears the the upper left corner. Touch the "-" to remove iMovie.
    See if it opens.
If not try restarting and/or resetting your iPad:
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

  • Cannot open old project

There was a topic about this that has been archived, otherwise I would have replied to that one.
Trying today to open an old iMovie project, one that was done with a prior version of iMovie (before 6/HD), and I got this error message:
+The project could not be opened, because the disk is full, the folder is locked, or the folder permission are incorrect.+
The previous thread about this did not arrive at a specific solution. And like the prior thread, one piece of the puzzle is that I have not only cloned my original hard drive to a larger one, but I've also re-installed Leopard as a "clean install", to get rid of things I've dragged along in upgrading from Panther -> Tiger -> Leopard.
Anyway, I tried looking at permissions, and they were okay as far as the chmod settings were concerned. What I missed was looking further at it in Terminal was the owner and group was not as it should be.
With one file, the owner was correct ("steven"), but the group was "501". Although that is my group, the file opened correctly when I changed all the files to have the group "staff". Whether or not this was the problem I cannot say; when I finally got it opened and save it with a different name, the group was again "501". In any case, it works to load and save now.
With another file, the owner and group were both "502", which was from changes made while using a pre-Leopard version of Mac OS X.
So, if anyone has this problem, it might get better if you can use the terminal to change the owner and group to the correct values.
To do this, for a movie named "My Great iMovie" in the user folder Movies, start Terminal and execute these commands:
    cd ~/Movies
    ls -laFB
This will list all files in this folder, and put a "/" at the end of directories. (Note that iMovie project files are actually folders of files). In that list should be your movie, or in my example "My Great iMovie". It might look like this:
    drwxrwxrwx 23 steven 501 782 Jul 13 15:15 ./
    drwx------+ 18 steven staff 612 Jun 23 17:38 ../
    -rw-rw-rw-@ 1 steven staff 6148 Jul 13 14:36 .DS_Store
    drwxr-xr-x@ 7 steven 501 238 Jul 13 15:17 My Great iMovie.iMovieProject/
now change to the movie project folder and display that directory:
    cd "My Great iMovie.iMovieProject"
    ls -laFB
and it will display something like this:
    drwxr-xr-x@ 7 steven 501 238 Jul 13 15:17 ./
    drwxrwxrwx 23 steven 501 782 Jul 13 15:15 ../
    drwxr-xr-x@ 5 steven 501 170 Jul 13 15:17 Audio Waveforms/
    drwxr-xr-x@ 5 steven 501 170 Jul 13 15:16 Cache/
    -rw-r--r-- 1 steven 501 99239 Jul 13 15:15 My Great iMovie.iMovieProj
    drwxr-xr-x@ 86 steven 501 2924 Jul 13 15:15 Media/
    drwxr-xr-x@ 5 steven staff 170 Apr 9 2006 Shared Movies/
Note that if the owner is not the same as your short username, you will not be able to go into this folder, because you don't have permission. In that case, you will need to change the commands to have "sudo" in front of them, like this:
    sudo cd "My Great iMovie.iMovieProject"
To fix the owner, enter this command:
    sudo chown steven *
(but use your short username instead of mine, obviously).
To fix the group, enter this command:
    sudo chgrp staff *
you can display your changes with
    ls -laFB
Change back to the next directory up with:
    cd ..
and be sure to do the same for the project folder also:
sudo chown steven "My Great iMovie.iMovieProject"
sudo chgrp staff "My Great iMovie.iMovieProject"
If the permission problem is what is preventing the file from opening in iMovie, this should resolve your problem.

  • Cannot Import iMovie Projects?

i have imovie 08 and when i tried to import my projects to FCE it has an error message and it says that it cannot be done???? Help!

True, the FCE4 manual shows (pg 210) that an iMovie project can be opened by FCE4, but if one method doesn't work then try the 2nd method, after all that's why Apple included both methods
    Happy editing

  • Encore CS3 cannot open CS2 project: folder cannot be found

I created a project in Encore CS2 under Win XP, and when I try to open it in CS3 under Vista, I get an error of
Cannot open project; The folder for this project cannot be found.
Disregarding the fact that I haven't changed, moved or deleted any subfolders or files and the drive has the same letter and label as before, why the heck doesn't Encore at least give me the opportunity to direct it to the correct folder? I can do this easily in almost all other applications, like InDesign or Dreamweaver. Shouldn't this error have come up in the first few days of beta testing? (Uh, it
    was beta tested.....right?)
I tried looking in the ProjectPrefs and ProjectWorkspace xml files, but they don't have any folder info. Searches in the knowledge base, forums and newsgroups have turned up nothing. It seems my only choice here is to recreate the fracking project from scratch!

    >(Uh, it was beta tested.....right?)
No. It wasn't. The Encore team is so good at coding and spell-checking that the Product Manager and the Director of the Production Studio project both felt that beta testing was not necessary this time around.
It's really pretty impressive that so few bugs have turned up in real-world use considering that both internal and external beta testing was shelved for this release. The additional resources that would have been used to test the app were sent to the Photoshop team to ensure that the CS3 release of PS was flawless.

  • Unable to open iMovie project?

I made a simple iMovie 09 project and burned it to a DVD via iDVD.
Then, to save space on my HD, I moved the project to an external HD.
Now I want to go back to the project to make some edits.   But when took it out of the external HD and placed it on my desktop, I am unable to open it in iMovie.   I've tried simply clicking on the project icon as well as doing File>Import>Movie.  I also tried clicking and dragging the movie icon from the desktop to iMovie with no luck.  iMovie just doesn't see to want to recognize it.
    Can someone help?   Thanks?

    Hi
There are so many things to this.
    A. Flash drive - I even don't know if they would ever work - very doubtful
    B. External hard disks - MUST be Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted -
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things BUT NOT FOR VIDEO no matter if iMovie, iDVD or FinalCut is used.
    C. In the folder iMovie Projects - There are NO MOVIES - but text-documents related to the projects and this document points to the Raw material in iMovie Events folder and how it is supposed to be Played/Viewed in this particular project. e.g. play Clip A from 00:00:01:13 to 00:03:45:02 and so on. So there are no movies in the project folder.
    D. So if both iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folder are copied over to an external hard disk - Then the iMovie in the second Mac has no links to this and will not find it.
SO to be able to work with one project on two Macs - all moving's of Events and Projects should be done within the iMovie Application - Not on DeskTop/Finder - do not alter or move any folder named
    • iMovie Events
    • iMovie Projects
on DeskTop/Finder - as they can mess-up and be very hard to impossible to mend.

  • Opening imovie project from external hard drive

I get this message: The project “last duly noted” was saved with an older version of iMovie. Opening it in this version will cause it to be upgraded, which will make it unreadable by older versions. Are you sure you want to open it?
How can I edit this item?

Hi Harmless - I do not think that your problem has anything to do with the external drive. Your project must have been crreated on an earlier version of iMovie - iMovie 4 perhaps, and contained in a standard folder. It can be upgraded to an HD project - best to use a copy for this, just in case....!
When you upgrade, it will firstly be converted only partially into the new version, so you have to take another step to fully convert>
Here's a comment about what should happen:
"A project created by iMovie 5 is a special kind of folder called a package. It looks and acts like a file. The package contains all the files and folders you see, but they are all hidden inside the package. To open the project in iMovie you double-click on the package.
If your project looks like an iMovie 4 folder instead of a package — so you can easily see inside — my guess is it's probably a project you've converted from iMovie 4 to iMovie 5. Converted projects do not look or act like true iMovie 5 projects. They contain the same files/folders but are stored in a conventional folder, just like iMovie 4.
That's not necessarily a good thing, for a user can get inside too easily, and open the project by double-clicking on that tilde file. If you do that, iMovie opens the PREVIOUSLY-saved version of the project. And when you next save, iMovie creates a second tilde file. Then a third, then a fourth. It's all too easy for the user to get confused, open the wrong project file and create quite a mess.
So it's a good idea, after converting a project from iMovie 4 to iMovie 5, to do a Save As to save the project into a new project. Then iMovie 5 builds a true iMovie 5 project that looks and acts like a real iMovie 5 project. Lots safer, and it works better." (as described by Karl Petersen)
So, you should experience no problems if you follow that advice - go ahead and convert!

  • I cannot use iMovie Projects / evnets on External Hard Drive

    Hi,
I am a long time iMovie, Finale Cut Pro, X... user.  I have 26 iMovie projects from my mac at school which I copied to an external HD inside of the imovie software.  I've done this in the past to create more space on the mac's hard drive in the past.  Recently, I was told the school district was reimaging all of hte computers so I moved all of the projects (and events) to an external HD (again inside of imovie).   I wanted to edited the movie's on my desktop mac at home but when I attached the external hard drive and open up imovie on my home computer, I can see the external hard drive inside of imovie, but their are no events or projects????).... Yes, everything is uptodate.  I can open the hard drive in a seperate window in the finder (outside of imovie) and see all of the files. I even tried importing and dragging the .rcproject files and double clicking to just open them.  Nothing is happening.    Can anyone help???  Thanks , Joe
    Notes:
    1) Both versions of iMovie are the same on both macs.
    2)  When I open up Final Cut X it also shows the hard drive with the imovie projects / events... but says "no files exist on this disk".... that's crap because I can see them on the hard drive!!!!  What the heck is going on!!!!

Top Level of the Drive!!!!!!! . ...Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.... that solved it.
I had ogranized everything into subfolders, so it makes since... just didn't realize they needed to be at the top level.  Big help and thanks!!
I am marking "This solved my question" because I accidentally marked "This helped" on the reply above.  I don't know how to change it bu Appleman 1958 solved this problem for me.  Thanks Appleman 1958
.... for everyone else with the same problem, please see the reply from Appleman1958 from above.

  • Cannot find iMovie Project for iOS after sending to iTunes 12.0.1

I made a video on the iMovie iOS app but wanted to finish editing the project on my mac.  Went online and googled how to get the file from the iPhone to my mac.  This is the link I found: iMovie '11: Import an iMovie project from an iOS device.
My problem lies in step # 5: Tap Apps at the top of the iTunes window, and then tap iMovie in the Apps pane on the left, below File Sharing. The shared project appears on the right in the iMovie Documents pane. I went into the most updated iTunes I have which is showing as 12.0.1.
I cannot locate File Sharing anywhere.  I also cannot find any recent posts or support threads that address this.  I couldn't find any images in a google search that even showed iTunes in the layout I have.  I'm hoping this is a simple issue to fix.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Cannot open imovie libraries created "with a newer version" (false!)

First of all, excuse me for my bad english!
I've an iMac 21.5'', fall '09 series. I'm not an expert user (I use Windows at work) and I use the Mac just for fun, when I have time.
A couple of months ago, I've updated to Maveriks. Then I try to update my iLife '11, too, but the Apple Store didn't show me the "update" option. Following some italian blogs tips, I change the language preferences and that let me able to update iLife. iMovie updated my video libraries and everythings works fine.
Yesterday, after a long period, I switched my iMac on, and check for software updates. Then I updated iPhoto and iMovie. Again, iMovie updated my libraries, and everythings works fine.
Then I choose "update all", the system prompted me asking my AppleID and pwd, the default language switched to italian, and all updates takes places.
On restart, "software updates" re-show me again iPhoto and iMovie, and other updates. I choose "update all", and the system reinstall iMovie among the others.
When I open iMovie, it prompted me with a "choose a library" messages, but whatever library I choose, it alert me with a messages that claim something like "cannot open this library, because it was created with a newer version of iMovie".
The problem is that "the newer version" is the "same" version (10.0.2) - exept for the different languages preference settings, and I dont' wanna wait until the next iMovie version to update my libraries
Can anyone help me to resolve this issue?

...It was so bad my English?

  • Cannot Open New Projects Created in Premiere 8

My software is Premiere Elements 8
    My system is a Dell Studio 17, i7-720QM, 6MB Cache, 8GB DDR3 SDRAM.
I ran into a third problem using PE8:
    1.  After I open a New Project in the PE8 Welcome Screen, sometimes the work area refuses to pop up on my screen; no Monitor, no Timeline, no Task pane.  When I relaunch PE8 and try to open the New Project I just created I get a message "...cannot open projects created with Premiere Pro"
Has anyone experienced this?  Do I simply reload the software?  I recently downloaded the PE8.0.1 patch.
    Thanks for any assistance.

I too had the same issue - along with an inability to (re)open video projects.  I did a few things.
As long as I created the project using the DV - "Standard 48kHz" setting, it worked.  Selecting "Widescreen 48kHz" allowed me to save the project but I was unable to open it, receiving the error you are getting about needing to use Pro.
The second issue is an inability to open an existing project.  Premiere launches, a progress bar shows "loading....1%...100%" - then nothing happens.  The workspace is empty and all menu options are disabled.
First - install 8.01, and reboot!   The installer doesn't indicate that you need to.  I continued to have the same problems until I rebooted.
Second - upgraded the ATI drivers from the Dell website.  Apparently my 2-week old Dell XPS-16/i7 laptop came with drivers from 2009 - go figure.
To recap, 8.01 (+reboot) fixed the "need Pro to open" issue
Updating ATI driver from Dell website fixed the "can't open existing project" issue.
And while on the Dell website you'll notice lots of drivers that need updating.  I did them all.
