Cannot open jpg

Hi to all
i am new to mac and the only complaint i have is that for some reason i cannot open jpg files that i sent via BT. or any form
when i click on it the icon moves(like is going to open) but nothing comes on
i have Google it and it seems a problem with preview.
how can i go around this
is there another app for viewing pictures
i tried the iphoto but i have to manually send it there
i just want to double click on a picture and preview it easily

Preview should be able to view any true JPEG. If the JPEG is encoded in some proprietary format that may give you trouble. Verify your file is a .jpg file.
If it isn't they sent it to you as an improperly coded JPEG.
You can always try the Open With command from the contextual menu. Control-trackpad click gives you Open With as a contextual menu in the Finder. This lets you pick another application to open with.

For some reason I cannot open jpg files from a co-worker who previosuly sent files without any problems.  I just bought a MacBook Air with OS X Lion & Preview won't open the files.  She sent the same files to another co-worker who opened without any issues?  Help!  Anyone have any suggestions after having the same or similar problem?

I don't have an answer as to why Preview doesn't want to cooperate, but if you only need to view the jpeg's and do nothing else to them, you can use two FREE applications that come already pre-installed on your Mac... Those are iPhoto and Safari. Just drag and drop over the application icon.
You can also find several FREE photo viewers in the APP STORE.

  • Cannot open .jpg files; says read-only and no access

I cannot open .jpg files I've been working on, even though I saved them as .jpg.  The prompt kept asking me to save the files over & over.  I did for a while then said NO to close the files.  Now it says access is denied.  Went to properties and tried to uncheck box for read-only, but it says I don't have access to do that.  How can I get my files back...these were very special photos.  Please help!

No...just PSE7.  Unfortunately, when I tried to cut & paste the photos from
my camera disk to my hard drive, the problem photo completely disappeared.
When I go into recent history, the shortcuts are there, but none of them
work.  They say the file has been moved or changed so...I don't even know
where they are for now.  Do I need to call a repairman?

  • CS4--Cannot Open JPGs directly into PS

I'm using Vista 32. After updating to CS4 I can no longer open jpg files directly into PS by clicking on the file in windows explorer or an e-mail. After much searching and looking for file associations, I was able to get jpgs to open into Bridge from windows explorer, but still cannot get them to open directly in PS. When I attempt to open a jpg from an e-mail message, I get a window in Bridge pointed to a temp folder. I did not have this problem with CS3, but am really at a loss for a fix. Anyway know what to do???
    TIA,
    Fran

Thank you to all for suggestions. I am posting the solution in case other people run into the same problem. This is a registry issue. Run CCleaner until there are no problems to fix. You will then be able to use "open with" to associate both the psd and jpg files with CS4. At least, it worked for me.

My wife sends me .jpg photos from her Windows PC but I cannot open them or save them to iPhoto. Get a message that the file may be corrupt etc. but other Mac users can open them.

  • Cannot open jpgs Preview will not shut down, color spinning wheel present

Trying to open jpgs and all I get is the spinning color
wheel. The files will not open.
Preview will not shut down even with apple prompt
of instructions on how to do so.
First aid in the OS10 utilities has seemed to disappear, but its still there for OS9.
I've been opening hundreds and hundreds of jpgs the last few weeks, printing and dumping duplicate images, etc...
    And now I get this.
Ideas on how to clear this problem up? And ideas as to what the problem is?
    thx - Craig

It sounds like it might be a good idea to run the disk utilities (applications/utilities/disk utility) and run the repair disk permissions. I have found that this often solves these oddball problems.
Try completely restarting everything. Run preview before clicking on anything and try opening one of these items from the file menu. does it make a difference? If so, do "get info" on a jpeg image and see if preview is the default viewer for it. If not, that may be your problem. If you have another preferred application you may want to set all your jpegs to open in that application until you get preview straightened out. Best of luck!

  • I cannot open JPG images in Camera RAW from Bridge or via "Open as" facility in Photoshop

I am going crazy with Photoshop CC!!! I have been using Photoshop CC and Bridge CC since Feb 2014 and have a recurring problem, which comes back periodically after having been fixed with the aid of the Adobe Help Chat facility. Today the Chat facility is not on-line, so in desperation I'm hoping someone in the Community can help me.
When I try to open a JPG file in Bridge I get the message "Bridge's parent application is not active. Bridge requires that aqualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature".
When I try to open a JPG file in Photoshop using the "Open As" facility, I get the message "Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file".
I am running CC on a Dell laptop under Windows 7 64-bit.
    Can anyone help me please?

I should add that JPGs edited with ACR usually need to be writable for ACR to be able to store the adjustment-settings inside themselves.  RAW files typically use an XMP sidecar to store settings, but JPGs typically don't.
If the files weren't read/write then ACR would have no way to store the adjustments in them and so is smart enough to not make them available for editing.
The other hint is that if you copy the files to your desktop--where the permissions are likely to be more friendly, they work.
To check the permissions, right-click on one of the files in Explorer, select Properties from the context menu and look at the Security tab.  Look at the various user-groups, like Users, Authenticated Users, Administrators, etc, and see what access each has to one oft he problem files, and then to one of the files that works ok.
You might also check the Effective Rights of a particular user to a particular file by clicking on the Advanced button in the Security tab.  Here is an example where I show only Read + Read & Execute access to an NEF for general users, but when I check my own logged in User (steve) I have Full Control which includes all the other access privileges, and this is either because I'm in the Administrators group or I am the owner, I'm not sure.  It is possible that Bridge or Photoshop is running in a user context other than your logged in user, or it's possible that another user accessed the files and changed the permissions to them.

  • Cannot open .jpg files; says access denied.

I was working on some very special photos of grandsons, and I saved them as .jpg, but then the prompt started asking me to save them over & over.  I did so for a while but then said "no" in order to close them.  When I tried to open them again, access was denied.  I then went to properties on each photo and unchecked the read-only box but access was denied there too.  I opened properties again and the read-only box was then unchecked but I still get the same error message denying access.  Once an error message said go to Windows Explorer to do something but cannot find that either.  When I open the file box, I cannot view the photos as thumbnails, even though they all have .jpg extentions.  See attached Please help??

Replied to your message...more things to look into if resetting the application preferences do not work.
These photos aren't on a DVD or CD are they? If so, I believe you'll need to copy them over to your hard disc (or external hard drive) and work on them from there.
Question: If you drag the jpgs into Photoshop Elements, do they open?
If they are on your hard drive, you might try taking ownership of the file(s).
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
Edit: You might be able to take ownership of the entire folder instead of each individual file. I think this is pretty much covered in the Microsoft link:

  • Cannot open JPGs from FF

When I try to open a jpg embedded in a local web page, FF does nothing.
    Example:
    <pre><nowiki><div class="wmPicture"><img src="p05_217a.JPG" alt="" /></div>
    </nowiki></pre>
    The image is there.
I checked, and there is no "Preview Document (image/jp2)" listed in Prefs>Applications.
    How can I fix this?
I have no trouble opening PDFs in a local web page.
    Example:
    <pre><nowiki><div class="wmPDF"><a href='#' OnClick='window.open("p05_218a.pdf","wmedia")'>

  • Preview.app cannot open jpg, auto quits

    iMac 1.83GHz Core Duo
    OS X version 10.5.5
    Preview version 4.1
Preview.app is no longer able to open simple jpg files, neither through the finder (double clicking photo.jpg) or through Preview (Preview -> File -> Open -> photo.jpg). Preview opens briefly, the image is not displayed, and then Preview quits itself.
I tried two things, both unsuccessful:
    1. Disk Utilty to repair permissions.
    2. Reinstalling Preview. (Deleted Preview-relevant files in ~/Library/Preferences/. Placed new copy of Preview.app in /Applications.)
    Console logged the following errors:

Any suggestions to get Preview.app working again?

I don't think there is a problem with your Preview.app. It sounds like you just have one bad image file.
Obviously, it would be better for Preview to provide an error message rather than crashing, but 100% robustness is a pretty difficult goal for engineers to achieve (although they actually do put a lot of work into that sort of thing).

  • Cannot open jpg from an iPhone user

When an iPhone user sends me a email with a jpeg attachment I cannot always open it. This problem specifically happens when the user sends from an iphone that is using russian fonts. Although the iPhone can type English as well. When I receive the photo. The jpeg has the file name ???????????.jpeg. I believe because it was in cyrillic and the pre could not translate it. When I download it, the photo does not open just a grey x box. I know the photo is not corrupt because I can open it my gmail and my blackberry opens it. For some reason I think it is the filename, when another iPhone users sends me a photo, the name is normally photo.jpeg and I never have a problem opening it. If I open this same email in my gmail on my computer and resend to myself I can open it because the file name is some cyrillic characters followed by.jpeg
Anyone else have this problem? Is this a bug with Pre and handling of cyrillic and naming it wrong.

I appreciate all the help received and I have tried the suggestions and experimented further on my own as well.  Here is some additional information about the problem.
I could remove the SD from my phone and open the pictures just fine with my MacBook/Preview.  Furthermore, I noticed that the problem only happens when I mail my pics to my comcast.net email account.  If I mail the pics to my yahoo.com email, my MacBook has no problem opening up the pics with Preview.  Same success if I mail the pics to my GF email at io.com.  So, by process of elimination, the problem may be with the way comcast.net handles my pics as email attachments.
    I remain puzzled why.....

  • I cannot open jpg or tiff files exported from LR3

staart with RAW. rename the files in Export dialog. export to hard drive or CD.
the exported files show in finder, but I cannot get them to reimport to LR3 under different filename.
his started as a result of a client who received files but couldn't upload to Shutterfly.
    very weird

the exported files show in finder, but I cannot get them to reimport to LR3 under different filename.
How are you doing this reimporting? What happens when you try? Is there an error message?
What happens if you choose, in the Export dialog box, to include the exported files in the Lightroom Catalog?

  • Can't open jpg, preview.app does nothing

    Hi,
I am attempting to troubleshoot a minimac 10.4.10
I cannot open .jpg with preview.app (or tiff/gif ect.), which i assume is the default pic viewer.
when d-clicking on a jpg (whether downloaded or uploaded from a camera) the picture will not open.
the only thing it does is the very brief animation quick flash from icon to full screen like it will open except it doesn't.
i opened the task manager (or whatever its called in apple) and preview.app is not running.
it is only possible to view a pic with firefox, quicktime, or safari.
HELP! i have basic to moderate user knowledge of mac

    thanks for the responses!
i did a 'get info' on a pic and it does show the preview correctly (no thumnails anywhere is another problems as well)
it already has preview.app listed as the default app. i selected a different program and did a open with, and then switched the default back to preview.app and same problem.
*preview.app will not open period*. launching it by itself does nothing. i went to the applications folder and tried launching it from there and nothing. *It is still installed*. I did a 'get info' on it and it shows March 07 as the last time its been launched (approximate time of update to 10.4.10)
so i'm confident the problem is from the app not from the jpg files. It just won't launch.
is there anyway to reinstall it or something? uninstall/reinstall? dunno how to do this...

  • Cannot open email attachments

I suddenly cannot open .jpg, .jpeg or .pdf attachments in my email. This problem is happening both on my iPad and my iPhone4.

If you go into Options | Advanced Options | Applications is the Attachment Service listed? If not when you reloaded the software you have to make sure that the Attachment Service is checked to be installed with the rest of the software

  • Can't Open jpg and other attachments

Since this new email took over, I cannot open jpg and some other files that are sent to me.  Word and pdf's are okay, but not photos that are attached.  A pop up says they were deleted.
This is just since the new mail version arrived.
How do I get my pics back?

...but if I go back to Classic View I can open the.
That's it for me....I'm sticking with Classic View....waste of programming effort on that new version.  I shouldn't be released unless it's 100% operable and thoroughly debugged.
