Reinstalling Office will have no effect.
Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Can't open Microsoft Office 2011 even after unistalling then reinstalling. Error message comes up before launch. What do I do? Can I fix this? I need to activate Microsoft Office within 15 days!!

I recently got a new MacBook Pro Running on OSX Mavericks and used Time Machine to move my documents and applications. However Microsoft Office Student/ Home applications did not work and requested a product key. I did not have the product key for it as I had installed Microsoft a long time ago, so I purchased a new Mincrosoft Office 2011 Student/Home Pin to install Microsoft Office. Everything installed fine, however when I go to open it it failed to open.
I need to activate my Microsoft Office within 15 days apparently and this is done when the application is launched. However none of the Microsoft Office applications do Launch (not Word, Powerpoint, Excel or Outlook).
Whenever I tried to open one of the named above the Microsoft Error Reporting App would pop up and list the errors. I was advised on other support pages to disenable this app so I have done that but now Word is now giving its own error message saying:

This indicates you had a bad install. You need to completely remove Office and reinstall using your new CD Key. See instructions here. Do not do the simple remove, Use the COMPLETELY REMOVE ALL FILES steps.

so I purchased a new Mincrosoft Office 2011 Student/Home Pin to install Microsoft Office.
You don't purchase a PIN. A PIN is generated when you install Office. You need a CD Key. If you bought Office365, you activate online.
I have issues with the Microsoft User Data - are there supposed to be two? and where exactly do they belon. They are in the Documents file at the moment.
Unless you used Outlook or Entourage you can delete both Microsoft User Data folders. When you install Office it will create a new one. Only Outlook & Entourage used this folder for data. W,E,P stores it's data in the User's Library/Application Support/Microsoft folder now.

  • Cannot open Microsoft Office after copying it across from external HD with recovered data from my broken macbook HD.

I have recently had to replace the hard drive in my macbook pro. All the data has been recovered from my old one onto an external HD and I have copied over everything from this onto the new HD on my macbook. Everything is fine except for Microsoft Office (2011).
Although I can see all the Microsoft Office programs in the Applications folder, I can't open any of them. It sort of tries, but then doesn't open. All my word, excel, etc documents have the little 'W' or 'X' in the icon and I can preview them, but it won't open.
So far I have copied Office and Messenger into Applications, 'Microsoft' into Application Support, 'Microsoft' into Preferences, and the 'Microsoft-Userdata' into Documents.
Have I missed something? I don't have the original CD or product key anymore so don't think I can completely reinstall.
    Thanks.

Thanks for your help - I have now found the original product key (although still no disc!)  so is there any way now? After this, I'm giving up and just biting the bullet and buying it again, annoying!

  • Does microsoft office 2011 work well on a mac mini?

I was thinking of buying Pages and Numbers from the App Store but saw that most of the reviews were negative.  Should I just get Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac?

Those Pages v5 reviews are negative for a reason.
If you have to exchange documents in a corporate, or educational setting where MS Office is used, then you probably should create native Word .doc/x content in Office for Mac 2011. Alternatively, you might also look at the free LibreOffice suite. It is far more comprehensive than Pages, and gets the .doc/x export done right.
Office for Mac 2011, or LibreOffice work just fine on a Mac Mini. There are several Microsoft updates available for Office for Mac 2011 — be sure to install them.

    Hi,
Do you get the error message like "Office <Update version number> can't be installed on this disk. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume. To learn how to fix it this issue, see "I can't install Office

  • Maverick updated and now i cannot open microsoft office for mac

Has anyone come across this too?
It says "Excel cannot open this work book"  and "the file name or file path contains an invalid character, for example  " / "
Same thing for word and although not tried it, powerpoint too
    Any ideas?

You will need to uninstall Office 2011 and reinstall it.
You must remove it correctly, here are the instructions.

  • My user information has been corrupted and I cannot open Microsoft Office

After the latest Office 2011 for Mac update, I have not been able to start Word, Excel, or Powerpoint.  Outlook for some reason is ok.  After going back and forth with Microsoft, I have discovered that I can open these programs if I have created a new user account on my mac.  Is there away I can reset the pertinent user information in order to open these programs on my existing user account?
    Thanks

Are you now seeing two versions of Mail in Applications?
Try moving the small 8.1MB Mail.app to the Trash. But don't empty it. Then download and install the Security Update again. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
If that doesn't work, use File>Put Back for the one in the Trash and see this post and the two following it. If you get another small one as a result, you can keep working with that one for this workaround. You won't need the one from the Trash.

  • Cannot open Microsoft Office 2004

Hi. I have MS Office 2004 installed on my iMac, for using Excel and Word. All of a sudden this morning, I could not print an Excel file, due to some sort of error. Don't know what it was. I then found that I could not open any Office application. I get the message Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office to no avail. I am not too worried about data loss as I did a backup of these files last night. All other programs seem ok, just cannot open any files in Office. Can anyone advise me on my next course of action please?
None of the obvious remarks about using MS please. :-))
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Don't know about billy but I did everything. Uninstalled all plists, preferences, reinstalled, nothing worked. BTW, Kurt, the uninstaller also performed like the other Office apps...sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
I also stripped my regular login account of all startup items (at least those that I could do without). Nada.
But I THINK I've found the problem (at least at my end). I had recently installed Shapeshifter's New UB program. When I uninstalled, all Office apps have been performing normally. So I believe this was causing some kind of a conflict for me.
Don't know if that's an actual solution, but it does seem to have done the trick for me.

  • Help on installing/opening Microsoft office 2011 v14.0.0 on Mavericks

    Hello Mac Users!
I have updated from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks few days ago. I have a previously installed Microsoft word 2011 on my 10.6.8. After the upgrade to Mavericks,  I am unable to open word, excel etc. and get a notification that " Check with the developer to make sure the version of Micrososft works with OS X. You may re-install the application and make sure to update OS for Software.
I have tried to unistall completely, and have added a new user to test it. But unfortunately, and even after fresh installation nothing works. I have also run uninstall tool and removed all possible microsoft traces.
Surprisingly when I locate Microsoft on the terminal it still shows /Applications/Microsoft 2011 (Which does not exist on finder)
It has been also happening with third party softwares like yahoo messenger, Skype.
I would really appreciate any quick fix for this. I am using Macbook mid-2010 model.
    Thanks in advance!
I have posted a log here for a more detailed info.

I have three suggestions in addition to getting rid of Trusteer Rapport and MacKeeper. Be sure you followed their respective uninstallation instructions. Do not attempt to uninstall them any other way.
You disabled an essential component designed to protect your Mac from malware. Re-enable it: OS X: About Gatekeeper - Apple Support
Update OS X. The version installed is over six months old. OS X Mavericks: Install, update, and uninstall apps
2 GB memory is barely adequate for any recent Mac, let alone Microsoft's bloatware. For acceptable performance, 4 GB should be considered a more realistic minimum. Your Mac can address as much as much as 6 GB.
    http://store.apple.com/us/mac/mac-accessories/memory
"Memory sold by the Apple Online Store is guaranteed to be compatible with your Macintosh."
Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find.
Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.
Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales.

  • I have a MacBook Pro (purchased in 2011) with OS X Lion 10.7.4.  I'm using Microsoft Office 2011 and cannot open older PowerPoint Files (non .pptx). It will always open the same .pptx file and then the machine hangs up and just keeps spinning.

Thank you - that all makes sense. It is, indeed, exactly what I did when I upgraded.
I'm also writing this on the machine that crashed a few minutes ago (I posted the crash in another thread). I got back with a 'safe boot' - as I have done a few times before.
I've also de-installed little snitch (and then done a safe-boot & then re-boot ) since that seemed involved. I de-installed Adobe flash, since that seemed to be a problem - I then re-installed the later, apparently fixed, flash. The most recent crashes don't seeme to have a problem with flash any more.
I've posted the various ( generally different ) crashes. I also posted a summary of the similar lines that turn up in most of the crashes.
Unfortuantely, I'm actually trying to use the machine to meet some urgent deadlines and all this is not making it at all easy.
I had had great hopes for 10.7.2 - I thought that the crashes must be pretty common, so would have a common aetiology. There do seem to have been some fundamental changes to the file sytem and to the video interface (that seems to cause problems to brand new iMacs as well as to my 2009 iMac).

  • Cannot open downloaded Microsoft Office 2011 on my Mac

I recently downloaded Microsoft Office 2011 on my Mac (running OS 10.6.8).  I keep getting a message that says there is no application that can open the program.  I have managed to get an image by trying to open the .dmg file in disk utility, but when I try again to install, it still says no application can open it.  Disk utility says that the file looks "ok."  I've checked with Microsoft and they say I ought to be able to open it.  Is there anything I can do?

Most apps use the Installer.app located in /System/Library/CoreServices/ to open installers. Launch that manually, then drop the Office installer app on top of its Dock icon. If that doesn't work, Reinstall Mtn Lion, starting with the latest update, 10.8.5 COMBO update.

  • How do I fix formatting errors in Open Office after downloading Microsoft Office 2011 on my mac?

I have used Open Office for almost 2 years. I recently downloaded Microsoft Office 2011 and now, not only can I not use Open office due to formatting issues, I cannot read any of my documents that were saved in Open Office unless I open them in TextEdit or copy and paste into microsoft word. Does any know of any solutions to this problem?? I tried deleting Microsoft office but that did not fix the issue. This is my first mac... and I love Open Office and prefer it over microsoft...

    Crabtree1234,
    Try this:
    Install LibreOffice (https://www.libreoffice.org/)
    Open your OpenOffice document(s)
Do a "Save As" and choose "Word Document (.docx)"
Then try opening them in Word.  LibreOffice is mostly the same as OpenOffce but LibreOffice has support for saving .docx files.  Here is more about the crazy history of the relationship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibreOffice).
This may or may not help with the formatting as any conversion of one document format to another is bound to cause issues.
    Good luck.

  • Important Microsoft Office 2011 Excel File isn't opening Please Help!

    Hello everyone,
I'm having problems opening one single excel file. I've tried others and they open with no issue. This file I'm trying to open now opened 2 days ago as it's a project I've been working on and I desperately need to get back to working on it!
I'm running OS X 10.8.4 on a Macbook Pro with Microsoft Office 2011. When I open the workbook it loads the progress bar, then doesn't show anything from excel apart from the top bar with file/edit/view... etc
When I try and open it from this point it gives me a message
    'XXX.xlsx is already open.
Reopening will cause any changes you made to be discarded. Do you want to reopen XXX.xlsx
PLEASE HELP and don't hesistate to ask for anymore information if you need it. Thank you.

Such instances are examples of why one should maintain good backups.  I suggest you consider using Time Macnine backups.  It would allow you to go back in time to earlier versions of the file if a later one is corrupted or if you save unwanted changes by mistake.
You would need a $80 external disk drive for the Time Machine volume.  Your data is much more valuable than that $80 cost.  Disks can fail at any time, taking all of your data with them.
