No, that is done deliberately, since letting other programs poke around in the iphoto library is the fastest known way to corrupt it and make it wither up and die, along with your photos. If you want to use PSE with iphoto you have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from iphoto. Edit them, then save without changing the name or format and iphoto will remember your last saved edits + original, although you have to lose the edits to see the original again. You may need to set the editor prefs>saving files>on first save to save over existing to make this work.
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, use file>open in PSE, make all the changes of any sort that you like, save the file, and import it to iphoto as a new file.

  • Cannot open photos in IPHOTO.  Only get a blank page with turned down corners.

Cannot open photos.  Appearing only are blank pages with turned up corners.

    These are your options:
    1. Restore the iPhoto library from the most recent backup that predates the issue.
    2. Repair or rebuild the library.
    3. Scavenge the library with a third-party application called "iPhoto Library Manager," which you can find in a web search. From the application's menu bar (not the iPhoto menu bar), select
    Library ▹ Rebuild
Books, calendars, and slideshows won't be preserved.

  • Cannot open Photo.library of other Mac User.

Running Yosemite, and Photos 1.0 (Dutch version). As advised elsewhere, in order to allow Photo library being used by 2 users of same MAC, I created a 3rd 'shared data' user, to put shared Photo data. So with 1 of the users on MAC, I imported (old) iPhoto library in Photos, went fine, and copied the Photo.library file on the 'shared data' folder under folder Pictures. I created proper authorizations for both users to access this library. Now from the user by which I created this net Photo.library, I can open this library OK, but from the other user (same authorizations) I cannot open the library, error is 'Photo cannot restore permission'. I run the checkdisk program, run the program to restore permissions, but did not help. When I try to open this library on the 'shared data' user's folder from Finder, error says it cannot import pictures from the library. Thanks for advice.

2 disks, and buy a software to backup one disk to the seagate raid 1 ... sounds complicated to me, TimeMachine can't backup network disks. Fact is though that I can access the foto library from 1 other user on the MAC, so it isn't so that accessing other user's  library doesn't work. But it only works for 1 user apparently. Clearly not very well thought through by Apple.

  • Cannot open Photos app after today's upgrade

    Hello
I upgraded the Yosemite OS today to the new version with Photos
All seemed to be ok except for Photos which is not opening as every time i try to open it the system tells me: an error occurred please restart application
All info is still in the iPhoto app but i never managed to actually start the migration process due to this blocking error
I tried restarting and turning the Mac Off but to no avail
I am using a MacBook Pro of 2012
I cannot remove Photos to reinstall it as this is embedded in the Yosemite OS so any idea is more than welcome
Have a nice day and thanks for the help on this
    Dimitri Dupont

Additional info - all still works on Iphoto so nothing is "lost". It is just that i never get further than the startup screen and when clicking on the blue "start" button the error message appears

Nobody can help you without some exact system info and details on what photos exactly.

    Problem solved.

  • Cannot open Photos app on iPhone 4S.

It worked fine while taking photos for most of the day, but then after taking a photo I got the spining wheel and it stalled then went to my home screen. I cannot access any of the 216 photos I took through Camera Roll or Photos app. I even tried connecting it to my laptop and removing the pics that way, but the DCIM folder is empty. It's size is 0 bytes. I have restarted the iPhone several times hoping that would help, but each time I attempt to open the Photos app it shows the screen for just a second and lists the Camera Roll (216) photos and then goes back to the home screen. Any advice would be appreciated. I would like to NOT lose the photos.
    Thanks.

Try resetting it: hold on/off and home buttons simultaneously for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple logo (ignore the red off slider that appears first), release and wait for the phone to restart.

  • Cannot open photos in iphoto

When I double click on an event my photos will not open.
I have tried view options, show library- the option is not available to click
im on mac version mavericks/ iphoto version 9.5.1.
This worked fine two days ago.

Hi Larry, thanks for the reply.  That did not work.  When I click the event in iphoto, then double click to open, it does nothing.  I can however click the event, then click edit and scroll through the pictures that way.  It is a suitable but inconvenient work aorund and frustrating nonetheless.
I did what you suggested and clicked through all the repair options unfortunately that did not resolve the problem.  I still can't double click the event to open the photos.  I can also see the files in the finder view under master and thumbnail folder... which will open the photo in iphoto but still the original issue remains.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Cannot open photos in LR5? HELP!

I just noticed yesterday that I cannot access my LR5 photos. All my photos have a !. I tried to correct with Find Missing Folder. It will locate folder, but I can't select it? Its frustrating because I see them, but can't access them. Any ideas?

I am not a Mac user, so I'm afraid I cannot be a lot of help to you. But I think your external drive is causing the problem. Try unplugging the drive and then plugging it back in, or whatever you have to do to wake it up and see if that solves your problem.  You can still see the images, I think, because Lightroom has generated previews. But you need to have access to the images in order to make changes.

  • Cannot open photos on disk in iPhoto

Awhile back I saved a couple of gigs of pictures from iPhoto on a disk . I am now trying to open in iPhoto and am having no luck. If I try to just view the pictures outside of iPhoto, I get into an extremely complex file heirarchy that is impossible to work through. What's going on? Now when I'm archiving to a disk I copy the individual photos to a burn disk (a lot of work that seems iPhoto should handle)

    Greg:
You created that disk buy burning from within iPhoto didn't you? Launch iPhoto with the disk in the drive. It should mount directly under the library icon in the Source pane like this.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Cannot open photos from windows files

Elements loads but does not open the photo I selected; using vista 64 bit; can't see why this is happening now.

Ah, this could be a tough one....
Can you think of any changes you made to your system just before this problem started happening?
Can you do this successfully with any other image files?  That will tell us if it's just a corrupted file.
If it's happening with every image file, there are two other things to try:
Re-do the "Open With" setting:  Right-click on an image file and choose "Choose Default Program" and browse to the PSE editor's executable.
Create a new standard user account, reboot, and log in to that new account.  That will tell us if it's a major registry issue.

  • Photo file transfer from mobile phone onto Mac-cannot open photos in iPhoto

Message reads: "Unreadable files: 1 The following file could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Library Folder.)"
I have successfully transferred photos from my mobile phone into my iPhoto Library, however I cannot see or edit these in iPhoto. They have been transferred as Preview shots and are only viewable in Finder: /Users/aaronandjuliemuir/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Fiji Iguana with Max.jpg
Why can't I see these in my actual iPhoto application?

    jam000
    Why?
The following file could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Library Folder.)"
Drag the file from the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop and then try and import it.
