Cannot open Photoshop CS4 files using Photoshop 7

Hi - I would be very grateful if anyone has solved this problem before and can help me.
I am trying to send a smallish (5 Mb) layered CMYK Photoshop file from my version (CS4) to someone who is still using Photoshop 7 but they are completely unable to open it. I have saved it using 'Maximize Compatibility' and there are just 3 layers, no fancy layer effects, no layer sets, and each layer has a transparent background. Every time the other person tries to open it (via File -> Open), their Photoshop hangs and they have to force quit. It will open in Graphic Converter but it is then saved as a flattened image which is no good. I'm at my wits' end what to do to get this to open in PS7 - does anyone have any ideas?
I am using Photoshop CS4 on a Mac Pro, OS X 10.6.3; they are using Photoshop 7 on a G4 867 DP, OS X 10.4.11.
Thanks very much -
Deb.

If anyone else should come across this sort of problem, here's the scoop:
It's a metadata parsing bug in Photoshop 7 and CS/8 (version 3-6 no problem, version 9-12 no problem).  It is caused by the history metadata in the file, possibly because of the length of the history, possibly because of the InDesign history bits.  I don't have a MacOS 10.1 system avaialble to debug Photoshop 7 any more, so I can't be positive about the exact cause.  But we know that Photoshop CS2 and later work just fine.
If you wait 30 minutes, Photoshop 7 does eventually load the file.  But that hurts productivity.
The history metadata can't easily be deleted in Photoshop (or ImageReady, Fireworks, etc.).  But if you copy the layers to a new document, the history metadata won't be carried over.  Save the copy, and that copy will work just fine in Photoshop 7 and CS/8.

  • Cannot open my NEF files in Photoshop CS6 from my new Nikon D800 camera.

That's it, I Cannot open my NEF files in Photoshop CS6 Camera Raw from my new Nikon D800 camera. What am I doing wrong or what is wrong? I have the plug-in Camera Raw 7. and can open TIFF files but not the NEF files.
    Peace,
    Charles Fennen

    Hi ssprengel,
to explain the scenario, i am basically a D7000 user and I do post production with Windows computer. But for an assignment I have hired D800, they have provided me their SD memory card. I have used the same memory card while shooting.
I have transferred the NEF files from the camera using Nikon software. The transfer was successful but i am not able to open the Raw NEF file with ACR. Even my plugins are updated till date.
The NEF thumbnails are having small lock logo in the bottom left corner. I do not know what does that mean. Like this.
Kindly let me know what would be the prob? if my RAW files are corrupted kindly let me know how will I recover them?
    Thank you.

  • Cannot open a TIFF file with Photoshop CS5

I have enclosed the URL to a TIFF file. I am not able to open this file using Photoshop CS5, as it says unsupported file with this version. I didn't face this problem before.

    Thanks in advance.

Something must have corrupted someting in the file so newer versions of photoshop won't open it.
I was able to open it in photoshop 3, ImageReady and also paint and a couple of other non adobe image editors/viewers.
Though the transparency didn't seem to survive.
If have you some other image editors or viewers you might try those.

  • Saving Photoshop CS4 file for Photoshop CS3

    Hello
How should I save a Photoshop CS4 file so that a client running Photoshop CS3 can open it? In other words is Photoshop CS4 backwards compatible with Photoshop CS3?
    Marlene

Just save it. but keep in mind that any CS4 features that you may have used will not be available in CS3.
Always save with maximize compatibility on.

  • I have a Fuji X-Pro1 camera. How do I open its RAW files using Photoshop CS5. I use Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5

I have a Fuji X-Pro1 camera. I use Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5  I have Photoshop CS5.  How do I open its RAW files?

Since photoshop cs5 can't use past the camera raw 6.7 plugin and that camera requires at least the camera raw 7.1 plugin, you could use the 8.7.1 dng converter
to convert the files to dng copies, which then photoshop cs5 should be able to open.

  • Cannot open InDesign CS4 file...

A friend of mine called me to say they had an IDCS4 file that they had been working on for a while importing loads of jpg and Word docs and eventually it got 37mb but today the ID document wouldn't open with the "cannot open" error message.
I tried opening it on my Mac with no luck in CS4 nor in CS3. My only assistance for her was to covert an older PDF in PDF2ID which was a solution in a way but not perfect.
Is there anything that can be done to fix corrupted ID files?
    David

    Hi Robin,
    Thanks for your reply.
The file won't open at all. The error message pops up saying "Cannot open IDH PM Induction.indd".
This is not a very enlightening message as it doesn't offer any solution to what to do next not even a suggestion to contact Adobe.
I've tried opening the IDCS4 file on 3 Macs with the same message on each computer.
My friend has a copy of the file but it's a duplicate of the damaged and that won't open either :-(
My conversion with PDF2ID has helped but the PDF wasn't bang up to date so there will be some more work to redo but at least it's not a complete restart.
Looks as if there has been lesson learnt here even if it's the fact that a file can become corrupted at any stage and so saving multiple copies along the way is the answer. Maybe if Time Machine had been installed we could have gone back to a working version. My curiosity is how the file might have become damaged. It's a shame ID doesn't offer a way of hacking into damaged files to at least get something out it.

  • Cannot Open A Library File Using the 'Option' key When Launching iTunes

I found that when I tried to open a different iTunes library file then my default by using the 'option' key when lanching iTunes that the iTunes Library file was greyed out.
I looked in the previous Library Folder and noticed that the old file had the extension .itl.
My solution was to add the extension .itl to the end of the of the file name of my iTunes Library files and things then worked when launching with the 'option' key. As an example 'iTunes Terry Library' became 'iTunes Terry Library.itl'. I applied this to all my iTunes library filles and all is well. Of course make a duplicate of the file you are going to change so you have a backup file.
    I am using iTunes 10.4 and Sno-Leopard 10.6.8.
    MJ

No, choose library works in Windows. The thread you linked to suggested that, on OSX at least, iTunes now behaves like almost every other application in that you can open a data file associated with the application and it opens that data file rather than a different one it had opened in the past. I was hoping things might have actually changed.
In short, holding shift or option while launching the app is a very clunky way of opening an alternative library given the standard behaviour of the GUI where "opening" a data file normally opens the application that can work with it.

  • Satellite L850 cannot open ARW RAW files using WMP 12

    Howdy all,
I have an Satellite L850 ivybridge with windows 7 proffessional 64 bit. I am having trouble opening Sony ARW raw files in Windows media player.
I have installed the Windows codec, which it says supports the Sony A55. I have the a65 which replaced the a55.
On my old other laptop the same Windows 7 proffesional software, media play open the raw files for viewings.
    Any help welcome.

    Hi Bob
Please dont understand me wrong but described issue has nothing to do with Toshiba directly. I hope someone here will be able to help but I think you should contact either Microsoft support or Sony to check what they will say about that.
I dont know which external devise from Sony do you use but usually Sony offers some additional software for own products.
Very interesting article about Sony ARW files you can find HERE

You have two options with Photoshop.
Upgrade to CS4 so you can use the latest Adobe Camera Raw plug-in, or use the DNG converter from the Downloads page above to make readable versions of your CR2 files.

  • Opening PC CS4 files using my new Mac with CS5

I finally switched over to a MacBook Pro, and purchased CS5 Master Suite for the Mac as well. However, I have been running CS4 on my PC for the last few years and have 1000's of files that were created in this format.
However, when I try to open these files created in Fireworks CS4 on my new software and machine, it will not let me do so.
Are there any steps or actions that I need to take to make these viewable and editable in CS5 Mac?
    Please advise.....

I've not experienced this problem. Were the files ever opened and saved within Photoshop? Can you currently open one/any of the files in CS4 with no problems?

  • Missing Plugins.  Unable to open InDesign CS4 file, using CS3.

    There are various updates InDesign CS3 available;
Adobe InDesign 5.0.2, 5.0.3, and 5.0.4.dmg etc, plus 'Digital Editions'.
Which one provides correct plugins to allow opening of a CS4 originated file in CS3?
Alternatively, is there a link which provides a utility which will automatically detect which
plugins you require to update from CS3>CS4?
    Thanks very much.

My script in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4071273 will identify with what version of ID a file is created, which may be helpful at times. (Aside, you may be the first to try it with CS3 -- so it might not work.)
Nothing to be ashamed of on your side, really. That infernally misleading "upgrade your plugins" 'error' dialog has been confusing first-time users from the very first time some lazy programmer at Adobe opted for a quick shortcut in programming and be at home before rush hour.

  • I cannot open this PDF file in Acrobat 8 Pro or in Acrobat Reader on Windows 7 64-bit

I have a PDF file that I could open on my Windows XP 32-bit laptop in Acrobat 8 Pro or in Acrobat Reader.  I then upgraded to a Windows 7 64-bit laptop.  But now in Win7-64, I cannot open this same file using the same apps (Acrobat 8 Pro & Acrobat Reader XI).
When I try to open it in Acrobat 8, it does not load and instead a popup windows appears saying -
    Adobe Updater
Some components needed to complete this operation are missing but information about them may be available on the Adobe website. Would you like to search the Adobe website for the missing components?
And I can choose either the OK or Quit buttons.  When I click OK, a web browser starts and goes to this website -
    http://www.adobe.com/special/adobe_update_manager/?type=Filter&name=FOPN_foweb&version=0.0 .0.0&lang=en_US&os=Windows&osver=6.1.7601&appid=acrobat8pro-en_US&cpu=intel
    This webpage says -
    Adobe Update Manager
Adobe cannot locate the requested plugin. New plugins will be listed on this page. Currently there are no plugins.
So now I am stuck, no direction to go.  I am left without any solution from Adobe for Acrobat on this file.
When I try to open this PDF file in Reader, it does not load and instead a web browser is spawned loading the webpage -
    http://plugin.fileopen.com/Default.aspx?bhcp=1
This is the FileOpen Plug-in for Adobe Acrobat/Reader, which prompts to -
Please click OK to download the FileOpen Plug-in Installer for Adobe Acrobat/Reader
I click on OK, download and run the Installer file, accept the terms, and installed the FileOpen Client (x64) B928.  Upon completion, it prompts to Finish.  But it does not automatically bring Reader up or try to load the file.  So I try again to load the PDF file into Reader.  But once again, the file does not load and the web browser is spawned loading the same FileOpen Plug-in Installer link.  I click OK again, and start the same FileOpen Client process.  This time, it recognizes that I have FileOpen Client installed, and the window gives me two choices, Repair or Remove.  So since I apparently need this Plug-in, I choose Repair.  The process seems to complete the Repair.  But when I try to load the file, it still brings me back to the FileOpen Plug-in webpage.  So now I am stuck again, and left without any solution from Adobe for Reader on this file.
I tried Adobe support.  But apparently Adobe does not support past releases of their products (Acrobat 8), and also does not give free support for the current version of their free products (Reader XI).
    Can this be fixed?

How is Acrobat 8 not fully Windows 7 compatible?  I see discussions on this Adobe Community saying how Acrobat 8 does work on Windows 7 and with 64-bit.  It appears that if Acrobat 8 is updated to the latest version, then this should fix AA8-Win7 issues.  And I am at the latest AA8 version, 8.3.1.
And how are Acrobat 8 and Reader XI are not compatible?  I have always had Acrobat and Reader installed on the same PC, without ever having any issues.  And Adobe allows the installation of one after the other.  So apparently Adobe allows them both to exist together.  If they are incompatible, then why would Adobe allow them to exist together?
Anyway, I did uninstall the FileOpen Plug-in and the Reader XI, then reinstalled the FileOpen Plug-in.  So now Reader is not installed and only Acrobat 8 is installed.  I then tried to load the PDF file, but I still get the Acrobat 8 error described above.

  • I cannot open any pdf files in Safari on my Mac Book

I cannot open any pdf-files using Safari anymore. Does anybody know what is going on?
    Thank´s a lot!

    Found the solution online!
An easy way to locate a file is to open the Finder. From the menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this in exactly as you see it here >     /Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you see the PDF Browser plugin, move it to the Trash.
    Relaunch Safari to test.

  • How do I open a CR2 file using CS3 photoshop

    how do I open a CR2 file in CS3

You cannot open a raw file from that camera  directly in CS3 and never will be able to.  That camera model was supported for the first time in Camera Raw 5.2, which requires CS4 to run.
You need to convert your Canon raw files to raw DNG files first.  Download, install and run the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.1, which is not tied to any version of Photoshop at all,
