Cannot open portfolio - File freezes indesign

Well I have been working on my portfolio for a month now and was resizing something and the program crashed. Whenever I try to open it, InDesign immediately crashes again. I have tried copy/pasting it, renaming it, moving it, deleting the auto-recovery file and everything. The only thing I have been able to do is to open a new document and place uneditable images of the file. BUT - the page I was editing when it crashed won't place either, it crashes the computer just the same. So apparently its just that one page, and I know which one, but I have no way of cutting it out that I know of.
Is there any way I can get this file open? I really really would like it back and I don't care if I have to delete that page to get it.

  • Cannot open pmd files in InDesign CS

I recently find I cannot open PM7 (pmd) files in InDesign CS. I used to be able to do this (they would open as Untitled), but now I just get an error message to the effect that InDesign cannot open this file, either because it does not support the file format, it is open in another application, or a plug-in for converting it is not installed. None of these things is true as far as I know. I can't place the pmd files into InDesign either, and I think I used to be able to do that too. I have tried repairing/reinstalling the Indesign program files but this makes no difference. Any suggestions would be welcome, otherwise I am going to have to use Pagemaker for new editions into the indefinite future!
    Many thanks,
    Tom Johnstone.

That's very generous of you to offer to convert the files, Peter, many thanks, but I have a whole lot I need to do and I wouldn't want you to have to devote hours to it! Somebody else in the office here might be able to help with the immediate problem. I still have Pagemaker and if really necessary I can output the files for my new edition from Pagemaker. However I have many years of publications stored as pmd and p65 files and I was hoping when they came up for revision or new editions to be able to convert them to InDesign. If this is not possible because of Windows upgrades it will be a real pain in the neck, to put it politely!
    Tom.

  • "Cannot open resource file" when InDesign CS6 starts.

I have an Intel Mac Pro running OS/X Snow Leopard.
When I open InDesign CS6 I get an error "Cannot open resource file", but there is no indication of what file it can't open.
When I click OK in the dialog box, InDesign opens and appears to be working.
I am concerned that this may cause a problem as I continue to use it.
Is there any way I can correct this issue?
I also have InDesign CS5.5 installed on the same Mac and it runs fine with no resource error.

I tried uninstalling InDesign, once I figured out how to do that with Creative Cloud that is (it's not an option in the Adobe Application Manager - which I think it should be).
Anyway, after uninstalling and reinstalling, the error is still there.
I also tried Peter's suggestion to remove the InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData and have them recreated but that didn't work either. I even tried the cmd-ctrl-opt-shift method to delete the preference files and still I get the "Cannot open resource file" error.
I thought that it was just a glitch since if I click "OK" in the dialogue box InDesign seems to open fine and then even let me open up a document that I had been working on in InDesign CS5.5.
    But ....
Even though the document opened fine, as soon as I click on a text field, any text field, InDesign crashes.
I tried three different documents and it does the same thing.
It didn't crash when I selected a graphic or an embedded pdf but it does as soon as I click on any text field.
Does that help narrow down what the resource file error is?
By the way, I can open InDesign CS5.5 just fine (same computer) with no resource file error and it does not crash when I select a text field, so the issue seems to be strictly with CS6.

Do you have your startup disk formatted as Case-Sensitive Journaled? Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility  – Bottom left corner should look like this.

  • Cannot open .p65 files in InDesign

When I try to open .p65 files I ge the error "Cannot open file "...". Adobe Indesign may not support the fle format, a plugun that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application." I had no problem opening .p65 files on my other desktop. It simply opened, and converted them automatically. Please help. Thanks.

I tested two p.65 files (one created on a Mac, another on a Windows machine) and one .pmd file (created on Windows PageMaker 7):
all three opened without problems in InDesign CS3
none opened in InDesign CC (same error message you mentioned)
Unfortunately, I had recently uninstalled the ID CS6 version from my system; otherwise, I could've tested which behavior occurred in the previous version.

  • Cannot open cs6 files in cc

    Hello,
I recently subscribed to CC after completeing a project on the trial version.  However since purchasing CC I have been unable to open any of the CS6 files I had downloaded (I could open them whilst on the trial period).  Yesterday I just kept receiving the error message " Cannot open the file **** Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug in that supports the file format may be missing or the file may be open in another application"    Today I cannot even click to open any of the files, they are in a faded typeset in the documnents or downloads folders.   I can open any indesign files I have created from scratch though?  So it seems it is just the files originally created in CS6 that are affected.  I am working on a macbook, if that makes any difference.
    Many Thanks for your help.

    Hi Peter,
Thanks for  your help.  I am working on the 9.2 version Willi.
I am unable to open the downloaded cs6 files on their own, even from the file menu, as the error message appears, but today they are no longer in faded type in the folder, and I am able to click on them and drop into a new indesign file and resave.
So thank you for your help.

  • Cannot load QXD file into Indesign CS3

    Hi,
I'm trying to open up a Quark QXD file in Indesign CS3.  It find finds the file as a readable file, but when trying to open I get the error message that it cannot open the file - Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.
Adobe support lists this as an importable file, and tells me where the plug-in is stored - I've checked and do have it (I can find it in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3\Plug-Ins\Filters\Sangam Readers) Reader for QuarkXpress.smrd.  The QXD file is not in use anywhere else.
Is it possible to check if this plug-in is actually loaded and if it's not, how do I install it?  Has anybody else had this problem?
    Any help gratefully received!!!

InDesign cannot directly open Quark files later than version 4 due to encryption. If your files are from a later version you can use the Q2ID plugin from Markzware.

  • I am running InDesign CS5.5 and trying to open an In Design File but getting an error message. " Cannot open the file "PDavidLCover.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file

I am running InDesign CS5.5 and trying to open an In Design File but getting an error message. " Cannot open the file "PDavidLCover.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file me be open in another application."Please help I really need to get this file open.

Since you've shown us the folder contents it's a good bet it isn't in use (no lock file). And it doesn't look like the file is mis-named as there doesn't seem to be anything else there that would be the .indd file (but just in case, open it in TextEdit and paste the first few lines here so we can see what the file header says), so the most likely case is the file is damaged. Is that on a removable device of some sort?
You can try the tool at Repair corrupt InDesign Adobe files on Mac OS X  or send me a link to the file by private message and I'll try the recovery tool I have for Windows.

  • Cannot open .wmf files in CS 5.5 InDesign

I Receved the following message; Cannot open the file logo.wmf. Adobe InDesign may not support the file format a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing or the file may be open in another application; which it is not.  I am lookinig for a solution; so I can do my online InDesign class.

You should not use a WMF file anyway in InDesign, try to get a PDF, AI or EPS version, then place this file. WMF is supposed for office printer to use in Word or other Office programs, not for high end print production or PDF creation at all.
If you get a PDF version, don't ise any which was converted from the WMF file!

  • Getting error "Cannot open the file "*****.INDD". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."

    How to fix this problem
"Cannot open the file "*****.INDD". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application."

When I have seen this message it is either when I try to open a document with an older version of Indesign E.g. an indesign 2014 document with Indesign CC.
The other time I have seen it is to open an Indesign CC document with Indesign 2014 which does not have Mindsuite - a plugin I use. Mindsuite, as yet, has not upgrade the plugin for Indesign 2014 therefore it recognises that a the document was created withe a plugin that the 2014 version does not have installed.
I believe your problem will be something like that.

  • Indesign cannot open "old files" CS6.

I was supposed to do a few adjustments in a project, i have opened it before and been working in it alot.. (2 months since last time i was working with this project) When i was supposed to do some minor fixes etc on this project yesterday i cannot open the file. The project it self are only on 8900 kB. What to do???? I can open my recently "newly" made and used projects.... Ive tryed some other projects that was also old, all between 2-6 months.. And it is just randomly witch i can open and witch i "Cannot open"..
This is the error for CS6.
This is the error for CS 5.5.
If you got some suggestions scream out! Will try it all that have worked before.. (If someone have had this same problem atleast!)
    Sincerely,
    David

First, a tip: Try manually breaking the links to the file by moving that document you want to open to your desktop or another directory or such and then try opening them... (corrupt image previews and/or images can then be largely elminated as a potential cause)
As @Peter mentioned, we (Markzware - link here to how that works) can likely fix this file. Interesting notes from @jongware above. Without having seen this file, our research shows there are various reasons an InDesign file can head south and corrupt or crash on you. Just like a doctor can not always say what caused the problem, there are some basic steps we all should take. For instance, OS up to date, InDesign using the latest update available, enough disk space and scartch disk space for heavy Adobe design operations. Here is a list of some of the most common issues with bad INDD documents:
    * Corrupt Font(s) (or corrupt font caches - see below)
    * Corrupt Image(s)
    * Power Failure
    * Placing images via drag-and-drop from an Internet page
    * Working on an InDesign file over a network or on a remote server
Here is a video on how to tackle the font caches of InDesign, which is good to do once and a while anyway:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf5ZuiaYgus
For checking individual font files (fonts are like mini apps really), we recommend either FontExplorer XPro or Extensis Suitcase Fusion 4, with the later perhaps the more popular of the two.
You can contact me on [email protected] if you need assistance with us trying to recover your bad InDesign CS file further. We also have a PDF to InDesign conversion tool called PDF2DTP if you have a PDF.
    Friendly Regards,

How do I resolve the issue Cannot open the file ".indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing , or the file may be open in another application?

Shouldn't the CC version be able to open any file created in an older version on InDesign?
    Yes, it ought to.
If the older file wasn't yours (if someone emailed it to you,or burned it on a disc, or whatever), then I am almost willing to bet you a beverage in the city of your choice that it's not a complete InDesign file. That is, maybe it was zipped and renamed, or the beginning or end of the file was chopped off during download, or something like that. The only reason I'm not actually making the bet is that there is a remote chance that I'd lose, and maybe you're in Adelaide or Khabarovsk or somewhere where the cost of airfare to me would make that bet a very expensive bet for me to to lose. So no latte for you if I'm wrong!
The script that Jongware posted will tell you what version of InDesign made the file to begin with. Additionally, if someone did something like rename YourFile.PDF to YourFIle.INDD, it'll report that it's Not An InDesign File. Because while SpectrumPCS is kinda right and that message can be generated when attempting to open a CS5 file in CS3 or whatever, it also spits out the same message when you just try to open an Autocad file, or a Windows system file, or a PDF, or any file that InDesign actually cannot open at all.

  • A client has sent me an indesign file I cannot open. She says she has updated to Indesign CC 2014. I am a CC member and fully updated my own software but cannot open the file she has sent me, not even if she saves as an IDML, how do I resolve the problem?

A client has sent me an indesign file I cannot open. She says she has updated to Indesign CC 2014. I am a CC member and fully updated my own software but cannot open the file she has sent me, not even if she saves as an IDML, how do I resolve the problem?

There are a few things to try.
First, if this file came to you vial email attachment, it could have been corrupted. Ask her to zip the file and send it again. That sometimes helps.
I suppose there's a chance that the file is already zipped, so see if that's the case and unzip it if so.
If the file name doesn't end with .indd, add it and see if that helps.
If you are double-clicking, try File>Open from within InDesign.
Last (and I know this sounds like a joke, but I've seen it many times), sometimes people attach a Mac Alias or Windows Shortcut instead of the actual file. What is the file size? If it's really small, that might be the reason.
Also, no offense intended if some of this sounds like stuff you have already tried. I don't know what you know, so I'm just spit-balling.

  • "Cannot open resource file" message on Save in InDesign CS3

    Hi there,
    I'm running InDesign CS3 5.0.3 on a 2.4GHZ MacBook Pro with 2GB RAM and OS X 10.4.11.
I'm finding that when I have a document open and hit Save, I get the message "Cannot open resource file". If I quit and reopen my changes do appear to have been saved.
Googling around reveals little on this particular message, and I've tried what I've found (closing Scripting/Info windows) but it's still happening. There's also a suggestion of deleting the InDesign Saved Data file, but I can't find where that is. Is it a pre-CS3 thing?
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    /stephen

Reposting because the "Forums have changed!" message popped up and obliterated my edit.
Basically, I am cross-posting from this thread:
Leox, "InDesign CS3 5.0.4 Changes to documents not being registered properly" #11, 17 Feb 2009 1:31 am
Because some of my users with that problem ALSO report that they get the "Cannot open resource file" prior to saving (which ends up with a crash and no saved document).
    Thanks...

  • Cannot open indd file in either CS5 or CS5.5

I downloaded CS5.5 on my laptop this afternoon. I then opened a CS5 file, worked on it, then saved. Now I cannot open the file in either CS5 or CS5.5. Is says InDEsign may not support the file format, the file is missing, or it is opened in anaother application. Does anyone know how I can open this file?

    Just to be clear:
It won't open in either version. I created the file in CS5 (school computer lab), worked on it in CS5.5 (on my personal laptop connected through the server), then tried to open it on a school coputer using CS5. The file will not open.
Once you edit a CS5 file in CS5.5, it becomes a CS5.5 file and you will not be able to open it in CS5.
Make sure you are running the version you think you are, and don't double-click the file, but actually use File > Open from within InDesign CS5.5.
