Cannot open raw image as smart object from ACR 8.4

   Hi
I just noticed that I am not able to open an image as a smart object from ACR 8.4. The tooltip says I can by holding down the shift key but doing so has no effect. I reset all my preferences to make sure but that hasn't fixed the problem.
  Thanks
  J

I thought it was the Alt (Opt) key that did that.  I'll go check
No, you are right.  It is Shift, and it is working OK for me with 8.4 Windows 7

  • Please confirm, I cannot open RAW images in CS2 from EOS 50D

    Platform: XP Pro SP3
After shooting my first session using the new Canon EOS 50D DSLR I cannot open RAW images in Photoshop CS2. Canon told me there was a free upgrade available to replace my current RAW editor ver. 3.7 BUT it appears from what I've read that I must buy CS4 to open RAW files created in the new Canon 50D. Thank you for your efforts.

    > ... from what I've read that I must buy CS4 to open RAW files created in the new Canon 50D.
Considering the $$ you paid for the 50D, updating CS2 to CS4 for the sake of all the improvements in ACR would be well worth the $200.

  • Have photoshop cs5 installed on desktop..got new Canon rebel T5i camera...cannot open RAW images...updated and installed plug-in...still now working.  Need help, please.

I have photoshop cs5 installed on desktop...got new Canon rebel T5i camera...cannot open RAW images...updated and installed plug-in...still not working...help please.

In any event, that camera was first supported by ACR version 7.4 which needs at least CS6 to run.  Naturally, all later versions support it too.
Your choice is either to upgrade your Photoshop, or to look for, download, install, launch and run the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 on each folder containing your raw Canon files to convert them first to raw DNGs that you can open in CS5.
In no case does an Adobe application belong "on your desktop".  The default install location should always be respected and left alone.

  • Cannot open Raw images from 5d Mark II in CS3

I'm back with more issues. I had this same problem opening raw images in CS3 from my 40d (I have Windows 7 64 bit). With your help I was able to fix that issue with a patch, but now I am having the same problem with opening raw images from my new 5d Mark II. Help again please!

You need to familiarise yourself with this:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/407/kb407111.html
You will see that, as a minimum, you need ACR 5.2, which needs Photoshop CS4 to work.
If you don't want to upgrade, use the latest DNG converter which will make your images viewable and editable in CS3.

  • Cannot open Raw images taken with a Nikon 5200 in photoshop cc

i am trying to open raw images taken with a Nikon 5200 in Photoshop cc but it says that camera model is not supported.  I looked at the Raw plugin version. It is 7.0.0.0.3. In support it said the minimum version is 7.3. I have downloaded the DNG Converter with camera raw 7.3. But it is still say i have version 7.0.0.0.3. Anyone know what to do?

If the plug-in version is 7.something then you're running Photoshop CS6 since Photoshop CC ships with Camera Raw 8.0 out of the box. Latest version is Camera Raw 8.4.
The Nikon D5200 has been supported since Camera Raw 7.3 so you can either update CS6 to Camera Raw 7.4 (In Photoshop CS6, Help > Updates) or use Photoshop CC which supports the D5200 out of the box.

  • Batch converion to PS smart objects from ACR 4.2

I want to open a bunch of raw files in ACR 4.2 from Bridge and create PhotoShop smart objects from them. I tried to do this by selecting the files in Bridge and opening them all in ACR. This is where I got stuck.
    - If I click "Open Object" one file is opened in Photoshop and I can save it as a Smart Object. This works but is very slow for 50-100 images. Also, I found a bug that truncates the filename so I have to manually fix each one.
    - If I click "Save Image" the images save as regular images, not as smart objects. The "Save Image..." button apparently saves only regular images, not smart objects, and I can't find any way to change the label to "Save Object..." or otherwise change the mode.
I've set the options at the bottom to "Open in PhotoShop as Smart Objects" (as I said, the Open command will create the smart object) but can't anyway to make the "Save Image" command actually save objects.
Is there a way to do this or is it a limitation with smart objects in ACR?
Environment: PS CS3, ACR 4.2, Bridge 2.1, Windows XP 64 bit with all updates installed for each.

Sorry, I guess I need to explain better.
I wrote a script to do this, but here is this portion of the workflow:
    1. Open CR2 file in ACR and make adjustments.
    2. Open as Smart Object in PS.
    3. Script Events Manager activates this script on Document Open, checks to see if it was opened as a Smart Object. We'll assume it did.
    4. The script asks me if I want to make another layer. I pick yes. The script copies the SO layer, sets an inverted mask, and opens to edit settings in ACR again.
    5. I adjust the settings for that layer in ACR and click OK.
The script will keep looping between 4 and 5 as long as I pick YES.
This gives me more local control of areas. If I want to bring out eyes a bit, I can up contrast, saturation, sharpness, brightness, exposure, or whatever looks best for the eyes in ACR, then unmask the eyes as much as I want on that layer in Photoshop. There is more data to pull from in the RAW file vs trying to do the same thing within Photoshop.
Opening as a regular image file then converting to a SO doesn't give me the same control. I would have to reopen the file separately, make the adjustments in ACR, open to PS then copy that document and paste as a new layer in the original.
Duplicating the document might work also, but I can also just save as .psd at that point since I'd have to know the path name by then anyway. I'll give that a try, though, and see if it might work better. The only catch with the save part is it slows me down waiting for it to write the file and if I have 5+ SO layers, it takes awhile. Once I unmask where I want, I flatten to a rasterized layer and continue.
    Thanks

  • Cannot open as smart object from ACR into Ps

       Hi
      Using the current ACR:
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 14.2.1 (14.2.1 20140207.r.570 2014/02/07:23:00:00) x64
    Operating System: Mac OS 10.9.3
When I have a raw file from my Nikon, and I open it in ACR, if I hit the shift key, the button does not change to allow me to open as a Smart Object. When I hit OK, it obviously does not open as a Smart Object.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks
    j

It might matter.  There's another way to get into Camera Raw, and that's with File - Open in Photoshop itself.
I don't use Bridge or another tool myself, just Photoshop, and with Camera Raw 8.5 started by File - Open, the shift key DOES change the button to [ Open Object ] for me.
Some folks have reported that the linkage from an external application to Photoshop CC (2014) isn't right with their installations, and that fully uninstalling Photoshop and reinstalling it has corrected the linkage.  That's second hand info (I haven't had to go through it myself) but if you run out of options it's a thought.  This might help you with that:  Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • Open as "Smart Object" from ACR to PS questions.

I have 2 questions associated with opening from ACR as a Smart Object in Photoshop. I'm using CS4.
    1. Is there a way to retrieve the original filename (complete with path) using a script or a setting somewhere to do this? I'm currently using Bridge Talk to ask Bridge what the active folder is then adding that to the document's .name property and taking off the " as Smart Object-1" part. Then I add a .psd extension to it and then I have to save it to retain that name unless there's an answer to #2 below.
    2. Is there a way to change the Document's name as described above from "Filename as Smart Object-1" to "Filename.psd" without actually saving it?
It seems to me there would be a simple way that I might be overlooking here.
    Thanks

  • Possible bug when opening NEF-images as Smart Objects in PS CS3?

In architectural images I often apply lens corrections (Rotation, Distortion, vertical Transformation) to my RAW (NEF) images.
When I open such an image in PS CS3 as a PSD all is fine, that means all the lens correction is applied.
But when I open the same image in PS as a Smart Object the lens correction is not applied, i.e. PS shows the image with all LR-editing (such as color temperature, exposure, contrast, etc) except for the lens correction data.
    What is wrong here?
    I'm running LR 3.2 and PS CS3.
    Thank you for your input.
    ErnstK

    Thank you for your answers.
It occurred to me - and Ian's post seems to confirm this - that PS CS3 is not fully compatible with LR3.2.
When I chose <Edit in CS3> (to open the image as PSD) I get the message that my Camera Raw plug-in is 4.6 and it gives me the choice to <Open Anyway> or to <Render by LR>. I usually chose the latter and I assume that this is technically an Export.
When I chose <Open as Smart Object> it just opens the image in CS3 without any dialog in between.
I guess it's time to upgrade to CS5.
    Thank you all.

  • Open .raw images on my PC from Nikon D90

How do I enable CS4 to open photos with a .raw extension?

D90 raw files should have an NEF extension not a RAW extension.  They are called raw files because they are raw sensor data, but the extension of the file is something else that differs by camera manufacturer.  NEF for Nikon, CR2 for Canon, etc.
If you are asking how to open a D90 raw file with an NEF extension, then your CS4 needs to have its Camera Raw plug-in updated to at least ACR 5.1.  What version of the ACR plug-in does your CS4 have, currently?  You can check by doing Help / About Plug-in / Camera Raw (on Windows).  Not sure what it is on a Mac, maybe Plug-in / Camera Raw.

  • Illustrator Application Window Resizes When Opening Smart Object from PSD

Hi All, I've taken a vector graphic created in AI CS4 and pasted it into my PSD CS4 doc as a smart object. When the original AI file was created the application window was set as I preferred it, filling my screen. When I double click the Smart Object in PSD to edit it back in Illy, the window that contains the application has been switched off of the fill screen mode and is quite a bit smaller. I know it's small but now I have to click the maximize icon in the application bar to get Illy to fill the screen again. It wouldn't be so bad once, but the application window resizes itself every time I punch back into the smart object from PSD.
Any ideas on how I can get the AI environment from switching around on its own??
Win 7, CS4, all patches current, Dual 22" montiors
    thnx,
    jeff

I just want to point out that when you open the smart object of course it is not the same file as the original but an embedded copy of it.
That might also have something to do with this issue and might also be a photoshop issue with the smart object and one reason might be that Photoshop is see the image as resolution and Illustrator sees it as a dimension and the teams might be able to do something about this but might not actually be aware of it unless you file a report even if it is not a bug it would then be a feature request.
They might not be able to do anything about it but then there might be a clever engineer with an idea, so it might be worth the report.

  • Cannot get RAW image to open in CS

I have Photoshop CS (mac 8.0). I recently bought a Canon G9 Powershot camera. I tried opening an image in Photoshop and got an error: "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document".
I thought that I might need to upgrade my Camera Raw plugin file. Following directions from the Website, I removed the original Camera Raw plugin file from the File Formats folder within the Plugins directory. I downloaded the Camera Raw 2.1 and put it in the File Formats folder. Still did not work. I then tried Camera Raw 2.4. Still nothing.
Then I installed the Adobe DNG Converter and put it inside my Adobe directory. I opened it and tried to Select Images to Convert, but the RAW image take with the G9 was grayed out (not active -- could not select it)
So the problem is that no matter what I do, I cannot seem to open RAW images in Photoshop. Please help.

    >What I do is open my finder, then grab the RAW image that I created with my Canon G9. I then drop it on the Photoshop icon on my applications bar.
LOL! It's never going to work that way, Daniel. :D
Photoshop cannot open your raw files. Period.
You need to drop a raw file on the DNG Converter application, or better yet, launch the DNG Converter and point it (Command O) to a folder full of raw images.
Remember, the DNG Converter "Open" command works only on folders, not individual files. But you can drop individual files on the DNG Converter.
The DNG Converter will then create brand new DNG files that can be opened by ACR 2.4 or later hosted by Photoshop.

It's a way of opening the Raw files from your OM-D EM-1 without having to upgrade to LR5.
In short, you open the Raw files from the camera uing the DNG converter, convert the Raw files to DNGs. Then you edit the DNG files in LR4.4.

  • My cs4 won't open raw image from my Canon 5D II.  What is the solution?

My CS4 opens raw images from my 40D with no problem.  However, when I try to open raw images from my new 5D II, it says it is "not the right kind of document".  Why is this?  Aren't all RAW images the same?  What is the difference between the RAW image in my 40D, and my 5D II?  Is there a solution to this?

  • How do I open RAW images from T1-XMG CR2?  Adobe DNG converter will not recognize these files.   HELP?

How do I open RAW images with T1-XMG CR2? I have adobe DNG converter but it will not recognize these images.  I have had no problem with converting other images.  and ACR will not recognize them either.  Help!@

The screenshot did come through once I added the period between dropbox and com, making URL:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/o7q829t2n3uuuqg/screenshot%202014-07-01%2012.36.28.png
The screenshot shows the first raw file is named T1-XMG_3306.CR2 which probably corresponds to a normal raw filename of IMG_3306.CR2.  It is not clear where this name came from.  I guess it is possible that you’ve entered in a renaming template in LR’s Import panel that replaces the initial I or _ with T1-XM and so the files are renamed.
What I have asked for is not a screenshot of your filenames, but one of the CR2 files, itself, which you can upload to dropbox and post a link to.  You should use copy/paste to get the link into a message, rather than typing it in, if at all possible.
This is because it was my understanding that these oddly-named CR2 files don’t work, and I wanted to look more closely at them to see if they were recognizable as some other type of file.
Do you have a raw file named IMG_3306.CR2 that these files correspond to?
