Cannot Open System Preferecnes

Out of nowhere I am unable to open System Preferences (the fourth choice down under the Blue Apple).
Nothing happens when I click on "system Preferences.
The System Preferences Icon can be found in my Dock with a big Question Mark on it.
Addtionally I noticed in the PreferencePanes (System/Library) all the Icons have their switch in the off position.
I feel like I have switched something off or discarded something accidently.

You need to look for:
macintosh hd > applications > System Preferences
Try typing System Preferences in the spotlight query.
You can reload the application from your install dvd via pacifist. See:

Updated to 10.10 a week ago. Grateful for any help. Cannot access or change system preferences and mac is also unstable. Can you help identify problem and fix for it?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Cannot open System Preferences after update to Snow Leopard

    Hi, everybody,
Just updated to Snow Leopard and everything seemed to go smoothly, but when I tried to open System Prefences, I get the message, "You can't use this version of the application System Preferences with this version of Mac OS X. (You have System Preferences 5.0)"
After upgrading to SL, I did download and install all the software updates.
    Ideas? Thanks,

    HI,
    Go to
~/Library/Preferences and move this file to the Trash.
    ~ meaning your Home Folder.
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    Restart your Mac.

  • I cannot open System Preferences on my Mac.

Every time I select the icon, the dot appears beneath it, but then it "unexpectedly closes". In addition, whenever I shut down my computer, it resets all of the user preferences I had prior to shutting it down, for instance, wallpaper, dock layout, default browser, etc etc.

    on your main finder screen
-press option + command key while clicking on the GO (on top)
-by pressing the two keys you will see the hidden icon for library
    -click on library
    -click on preferences
    -locate the file  com.apple.systempreferences.plist
-move the file outside of the folder or erase it(i would advise against it until your problem is fixed)
    -close everything
    -restart your system
-- it should fix everything, thus you can delete that file you dragged out..

I think real world performance shows both statements to be wrong; consider this:
If that were the case, how come Apple does not include that information in its Snow Leopard installation requirements, since Rosetta is an optional install?
Also, running a PowerPC app on an 2011 i7 Mac with Snow Leopard will run faster than running that PowerPC app on a PowerPC Mac.

I cannot open the general pane in system preferences. I get a message saying there is an error. Any suggestions?

The first thing I would suggest is for you to go to the folder containing your catalog, using your system browser. There will be a folder that has the extension .lrdata. Delete that folder, and then try to start Lightroom. If that doesn't work, replace your catalog with your most recent backup.

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

  • Issue with latest Adobe Reader 11.0.10 - Adobe Reader cannot open in Protected Mode due to incompatibility with your system configuration.

Since updating to the most recent Adobe Reader v11.0.10, getting an Adobe Reader Protected Mode: Adobe Reader cannot open in Protected Mode due do an incompatibility with your system configuration.  Would you like to open Adobe Reader with Protected Mode disabled?

The solution I was looking for was to launch Adobe Reader in Protected Mode.
I could not identify issues preventing Protected Mode from starting.  What ended up working, was to do a complete uninstall, followed by a reinstall.  Now we can load Reader in Protected Mode.
