Cannot output HDV seq to tape

I have a Z1 camera connected via Firewire, and am trying to Print to Video a 1080i50 sequence. The inputs on the camera are set correctly. I have successfully printed to video many times in DV format - this is the first time I have attempted to output in HDV. I am using FCP v6.0.6.
In the A/V devices tab of Audio/Video Settings, in the Video Output list, I am only given the option of None, or Digital Cinema Desktop. All the flavors of HDV are listed, but are greyed out. Also, if I uncheck Different Output for Print-to-Video, it resets itself to checked the next time I look. I cannot set the View/External Video to All Frames - it remains set at Off no matter what I do. I suspect that here is the root of the problem - the video is not getting out of the computer to the recording deck.
I have only one external drive containing the sequence footage connected to the computer - I have previously experienced problems when multiple drives were connected.
Does anyone know where I may be going wrong?

Jim: Sony HDV 1080i50 is set as the device control, although I don't think device control is used when printing to video. The recorder is started manually.
Thrillcat: The settings are correct on the camera for HDV when trying to record an HDV sequence, and yes, the sequence is HDV. I can successfully connect my DSR-11 DV-only deck and record to it from FCP, even recording a DV output directly from the HDV sequence.
Sharon: I'm checking the A/V devices settings right before I go. The problem seems to be that although FCP is acknowledging there is an HDV device connected, it is not letting me connect to any of them (the list of HDV device options is greyed out). Consequently all subsequent actions will not work (like selecting All Frames in the View menu). I need to find out why that list is greyed out.
If I check Different Output for Edit-to-Tape/Print-to-Video, the list of HDV devices is available, but I get a warning asking me to check external connections to the device, (as this output does not go to the Firewire output and I have no alternative video card installed). If I try to proceed further, I get a warning that "The sequence is not compatible with HDV Print to Video". However, the sequence is a correct 1080i50 sequence.

  • Can FCP output HDV back to tape now? + GOP Gonforming Question

I am having problem with HDV CONFORMED render files being messed up and playing incorrect parts of video or being out of sync and jerking around.
FCP has to conform the HDV stream's GOP back to normal after editing before it can output. Does this apply to compression for DVD as well as output to Tape?
Last time I checked you couldn't output HDV to tape.
    Is this new?

Actually I am having problems with the JVC HDV format and FCP.
FCP scrambles parts of the video in the render files while conforming.

  • What are the correct setup and system settings for importing HDV video from tape?

I keep trying different "easy setups" and system settings/preferences in order to import both the audio and video from HDV recordings on miniDV tape to no avail in either FCE4 or FCP5.  I import via firewire from the camera.  My computer "sees" the camera and controls playback (I can hear the audio) but no video displays for capture (just color bars).
My camera is a Canon Vixia HV40 and my computer is a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I've tried the HDV easy setup...no video...
I've tried HDV 1080i/60 as I saw recommended somewhere else...no video...
Captures standard video just fine but I'd like to try editing some higher def footage.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks.

The combination of all these helpful ideas solved the problem.
I set AV settings to HD and Apple Intermediate Codec HDV 1080i/60 AND set the cameras output to "locked" HDV.  Funny, it had been on "A" (Auto) before and should have simply sensed the need for HD output.  I then tried to capture using "A" again and this time it detected the difference between SD footage and HDV footage (I had clips of both kinds on the same tape).
I ran similar capture tests on FCP 5.1, FCE 4, and FCPX and all three programs captured HDV video and audio.
Thanks again everyone.  Be sure the camera is set to output HDV or "A".

  • Satellite Pro U300: DVD issue - error: cannot output to external monitor

    Hi,
I was having problems playing a dvd on my U300.
Basically the software would load but when I tried to play the dvd it said "cannot output to external monitor".
Having gone through all options I could not find anything to stop this happening. I then downloaded the latest software from the toshiba site.
    dvdpl-20070807102909.zip
I resintalled this but got the same error message.
I then uninstalled the software and tried to reinstall but now it just produces an error mesaage saying it cannot intsall the software on this computer.
    How can I reinstall this?
    Regards,
    Mark

I presume you have received the Toshiba Recovery CD. Am I right?
On this CD you can find the Toshiba image file. This image contains the Vista OS, Toshiba drivers, tools and additional software.
But note; you cannot install only a single program. To reinstall a application from the Recovery CD you have to format the HDD and have to reinstall the whole OS using the Recovery CD.
As Gipsyman said, the Toshiba driver page contains update and the original preinstalled software is needed.

  • Cannot output 5.1 audio on HDMI after installing Windows 7

    Hi All,
I have Pavilion dv7 1270us, which came with Windows Vista x64. I've managed to watch DVD Movies and Blu ray discs through the HDMI-output, having multichannel audio as well (5.1)
I thought that it was time for a Windows upgrade. This week I've purchased a copy of Windows 7 Professional, formatted my harddrive and installed my new Windows. After that I browsed HP's driver page to download my missing drivers.
Everything looks good now, except the fact that I cannot output multichannel audio to my amplifier now.
Firstly, I thought that this could be a codec issue, but it isn't. This is what I've found in my Sound settings - Windows says that my HDMI supports only 2 channels:
Am I missing something? A driver maybe or a setting? I looked at all possible settings and I am almost sure that the problem isn't there.
    Please help!
P.S. I forgot one more thing. When my laptop was running on Vista, it was "smarth enough" to automatically choose the HDMI sound output for default sound device when I connect my HDMI cable, and the opposite - select "speakers" on disconnect. Now it does not.

As stolen from someone on another forum, "Basic windows sound will always be 2 channel with HDMI. It is only when a DD/DTS/LPCM signal is bypassed to the receiver that you get 5.1 or greater."  Basically, set your HDMI as your Default Device, restart the computer, and test to see what happens.
Assuming this does not solve your problem, looking up your driver page shows that your current set of drivers are out of date.  You can go here to download the newest set available from HP:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-75858-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&...
    Good luck!
Though I am an HP employee, I am not here as a representative for them. I am here of my own accord to help those requesting it.
Please demonstrate any appreciation for help with a kudos!

Go to the Project Library View and select your project.
Then FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT and give the duplicate a name like "your name - part 1".
Then duplicate it again and give the duplicate a name like "your name - part 2"
Now you can open "part 1" as a project and delete everything that is in part 2.

  • Can you print HDV to SD tape?

    Hi,
I was wondering if it was possible to print HDV to SD tape once I'm finished with my HD edit. If so, how would I go about doing it?
    Thanks!

Paste your HDV Timeline into a DV-NTSC Anamorphic Sequence. Render it.
Connect your deck via FireWire and from the View Menu > Video Playback, select the deck.
Choose *Print to Video* from the File menu.
Further details can be found in the manual, although I found the on-screen dialog pretty much self explanatory, the first time round.

  • Diff one frame when outputing via edit to tape.

So.... my problem is simply that the video I am outputing via edit to tape is diffing one frame in maybe 50% of the times. This makes my job a little more stressful in deadline situations.
How do I solve this problem?
    /Tobias

    Thank you Shane,
    This is my specs:
    codec: AJA VUY
    tape: digibeta
    capture card: aja cona LH
    FCP: 6.0.4
    QT: 7.5
Yes exactly, my movie starts at 10:00:00:01 if Im not so lucky, but that happens randomly, maybe 50% of the times. In bigger timelines this can cause big delays.
I have tried changing frame offset in playback control and changed the playback offset in the Device control Preset, back and forward, without any result.
This man, Marcus, seems to have the same problem.

  • Audio pops in tape output (HDV)

I'm sending a native HDV timeline back to tape, but when I do so I get little pops in the audio. There are no audio artifacts in the timeline, and my file outputs (DVD mpeg and cineform AVI) both sound just fine. Any ideas what might be behind this? I'm running PPro CS3 v. 3.2.0 on the following system:
    Dell Precision PWS390
    Intel Core2 6400
    2.13GHz, 2GB RAM
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 3450/4000
    Thanks.

Do you have Audition or some other wave editor that can change the soundfile to 16/44.1? If not, you might want to try Audacity. It's a free editor that works pretty good.
    audacity.sourceforge.net
Just export the sound only from the timeline as a wave file, open with Audacity, change the bit depth and re-save it, then bring it back to the timeline in CS3 either on it's own track while muting the old one, or just delete the old one altogether after separating it from the video.
At least I'm guessing that's the problem. If it is then you'll have clued us all onto to something new to watch for while exporting to tape. Consider yourself a guinea pig sir!

  • How to output HDV without recompressing unaltered frames?

    Hello everyone,
I have posted a similar question on the 2.0 forum, but thought I'd give it a go here as well, and try to fine tune it a bit.
My goal is to output a video I have been working on at the highest quality possible, and use it as a 'master' for all further purposes (be it compression for the web, DVD, etc.) In doing so, I'd like to keep the quality as high as possible (so as not to limit future applications), but at the same time, try and not do so at the cost of unnecessarily huge file sizes (that is, I'm not sure there is any need to export a gigantic uncompressed video file where the original footage was shoot in HDV, which is compressed to begin with)
So the solution seems to be trying to maintain as much of the original quality of the HDV footage captured as possible. A discussion with a FCP user led me to the understanding that on final cut you have an option to only render your edits, and save out the file as HDV, thereby leaving the rest just as they were upon import (without further recompression) I cannot see why would there not be a similar option on Premiere...
On the same note, I've done a lot of reading on the subject both on this and outside forums, and noticed that there are quite a few questions that address the subject of export format/setting/quality from various angles, and thought that it might be a good idea to add a thread in the FAQ about the best export settings for... 'X', 'Y', 'Z' -- this way users can share the settings they use for specific purposes or to attain certain results in one place, rather than having them scattered around the forum...
At any rate, all feedback will be much appreciated. Many thank!

    Thanks for all the feedback!
    Steven:
i "There will be some decrease in the quality over the original because there is no way to just re-encode the changed frames. That is due to the Long GOP nature of the beast."
This made me think... I'm assuming the reason you're saying that it's impossible to just re-encode the changed frame is because with GOP there are very few true whole frames, while the rest are being constructed at real time; now, would that still be the case if I were to first capture the footage using a lossless codec, and then import it into the time line? Because I'm thinking that perhaps, since the latter is actually composed of true frames, there is no reason why premiere could not re-encode only the changed ones... Thoughts?
Also, could you please explain the following (as I'm not sure I understand correctly which format you are referring to, as well as where to/how should I copy the file...)
i However, you will probably be happy with exporting to SD, or to any size other than HD, and the format is already HD, so just copy the file.
    Jim,
am I correct to understand you are convinced that working with HDV is a futile effort? If so, could you please elaborate a bit on your conclusion?
    Howard,
I actually thought about exporting MPEG 2 out myself the other day--two questions:
    1. I read that HDV utilizes a
    i form
of MPEG 2 compression; would the MPEG 2 export option offered by adobe premiere be exactly the same, or could it be the same genral method, yet different in some ways?
    2. Supposing that it is exactly the same compression method as HDV, would premiere not re-compress again the entire sequance if I were to export the project in MPEG 2, resulting again in lower quality?
    Thanks again!

  • Preparing to Print a BIG HDV project to tape.

I have a 80mins HDV project that I'm preparing to Print to DV tape (I have 83min tapes)
Is there anything I should know to make this process flow a bit smoother?
I project is on 2 HDs.
I was thinking that I would mixdown the audio tp begin with.
    The project is mostly conformed
Has anyone successfully Printed 80mins of HDV?
This is for a premiere on monday night.
I also want to run a bkup. What is the fastest way to get a usable, decent looking output?
    Thanks
    DP 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Visit colorsstudios.com

Honestly, a great looking image can only br achieved by outputting certain areas, then going back in to FCP and making changes. I'm sure a decent output will be achieved with a straight print to tape (that's what one would start with anyway). If you tweak it now based on what other people have found you're playing with fire. Just print it and go from there. If you have time to make changes and reconfrom and reprint, that's great, but if you start fiddling, you may get a complete failure, for which you don't have time.
As for the 95% conformed, don't trust it completely - until it is finished conforming.

  • HDV Print-to-Tape problems

About a half hour into a "print to tape" from an HDV sequence to a Sony M25U HDV tape deck, I get an error message that has something to do about a specified file being locked [first issue]. Since I could not determine which file it was having a problem with I decided to render a complete self contained Quicktime and then output that.
When I try to print that to tape it skips [second problem] and it appears to do that with any rendered quicktime. I would think that FCP should have no problems with files that it rendered. This happens with multiple tape decks and FCP workstations.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
    Thanks

    Cody,
I have a Z7 which should operate pretty much like the FX1. I did this about a month ago and remember struggling with it. Here are my notes, which may or may not help. It is only vague in my mind at the moment, sorry.
    1. I am pretty sure when editing I had Render Control set to ProRes, as you do. When I did print to video, I copied my whole sequence, then put it into a new HDV sequence where the render was set to HDV. This took a long time--2:1 on my MacPro Dual 3GHz. I also have starred here--"When copy to HDV sequence, check titles/etc to make sure aspect ration still OK."
    2. I have this part starred--"EACH TIME print to HDV tape on Z7U, go into Easy Set-up and choose HDV 1080i60. Defaults to custom which won't work."
    3. Here are some more notes I took, which aren't particularly clear to me at the moment
PTV with the "Different settings" box checked and have this be HDV (1440x1080i60). That may have had to do with the fact I was using the MXO and monitoring with a second monitor. May not apply to you. I also see the note "Playback HAD been set to none".
    4. Also this last note:
"Camera AV set to HDV, not 'auto' for this. Usually have on auto. Also FW out HDV-->DV is still ON, which is what need for timecode through AJA. Still seems to record into camera as HDV. Instruction book says to turn this 'off' when record HDV to tape, but seems to work either way."
Hope one of these notes helps you. If I had to pick one to try first, it would be #2. I had it starred the most

  • Minimum Mac G5 for HDV print to tape

    Hi all,
I've been trying to print to tape my first HDV timeline. The error message reads, "Unable to perform print to video operation for HDV as RT Extreme is not supported. Improved CPU Speed and/or RAM needed to enable RT Extreme and HDV Print to Video".
So my questions are, is there any way to turn off RT Extreme? Is my iMac G5 2.0 ghz, 512mb ram insufficient for this operation? Perhaps boosting the ram could eleviate this issue? Does anyone know the minimum Mac requirement for outputting from FCP5.
On a side note, I was able to export the clip, the reimport it into iMovie HD, but I am having an issue with a black bar on the left of the screen in iMovie which I have also posted on that board looking for answers....

Try turning on Safe in the RT settings in the top left corner of the Timeline Window.
    And render everything.
