Cannot Partition Mac OS X HDD?

Hi Guys,
So I've installed boot camp several times in the past but for some reason I am having trouble this time.
Basically, when I go to the Boot camp setup utility it as usual goes to partition the HDD at my specified amount, however when it gets to about halfway done a message pops up saying that the disk cannot be partitioned and that I need to backup and then format my HDD to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"... but the thing is, it is already Mac OS Extended (Journaled)!
The only reason I don't want to erase and start over is because when I backup using Time Machine and then wipe the computer, even though everything is saved in Time Machine when I restore it I still have to go and reinstall most of the applications after the restore.
Is there any way to avoid having to erase the disk? Is there something that is causing this error?
Thanks for any assistance!!!

Use SuperDuper (free for full volume clone/copy).
Makes a bootable image.
Restores nicely.
Everything works (you should boot from and test out your backup).

  • Mac Mini - Cannot install Mac OS X on this computer

I have recieved a Mac Mini from a family member as a gift - I believe it's an old 2010 model or so running 2.66 GHz, 4 GB RAM and 1TB (2 500gb) HDD.
I'm 99% sure the disc I'm using is the computers orginal disc.
I have gone about reformatting the computer like I have done with all my macs previously, however when I select a language when booting from disk, I will get the pop up error "Cannot install Mac OS X on this computer". I have tried wiping both hard drives, partitioning both hard drives but to no avail.
    Help is much appreciated.

Having a go installing the Mini Server disc just incase - seems to be working?

  • Permissions Issue; cant access a partitioned part of my HDD or my iDisk

I've been having a few issues with permissions sharing files between my Mac Book and iMac, I recently reset the permissions to read/write for myself including all sub-folders on my HDD. Having done this I now cannot access a partitioned part of my HDD or my iDisk!
When I try I get a "Folder XXX can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents"
When I go to "get info" and look at the permissions they all read "custom". When I change them to read/write they go back to custom. I've tried repairing permissions in Disk Utility, booted from the instillation DVD and tried the Disk Utility again, also the Reset Passwords option but still no access!
    Can anyone help?

It would seem you've really gotten the permissions messed up. Here's a rather involved process for getting all the permissions reset for the entire HDD hierarchy.
Startup into Single User Mode: How to Startup into Single User Mode. When startup finishes you should have a black screen with white type ending with a prompt. Enter these commands and press RETURN after each one:
    mount -uw /
    chown root:admin /
    chmod 1775 /
    reboot
After rebooting open the Terminal application to set the following directory permissions. You can paste these lines or enter by hand, but be careful to enter them correctly.
    sudo su
Password: [Enter your admin password when prompted.]
    chown root:admin /Applications
    chmod 0775 /Applications
    chown root:admin /Library
    chmod 1775 /Library
    chown root:admin /System
    chmod 0775 /System
    chown root:admin /Users
    chmod 0775 /Users
    chmod -R -N /Applications
    chown -R :admin /Applications/*
    chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
    Now restart the computer.

  • Cannot Partition

    Hello everyone,
I cannot partition my disk correctly using Boot Camp. I tell it to partition a 32gb partition, it starts partitioning then I get a screen that says I have to restart. However, everything freezes, and the only thing I can do is a hard reboot after which I find disk space missing, and I have to use install dist to repair my HD.
So how do I partition the disk? Is there some software problem I don't know about?
    Thanks,
    Misha

I have already repaired. I am still trying to partition the disk into two parts - Mac HD and Windows HD so that I can Install Windows.
The problem is not recovering the 10GB of lost disk space after a failed partitioning service, the problem is acquiring the 32GB of partitioned FAT32, Boot Camp compatible hard drive space that I can use to install Windows on. I have tried Parallels already but it simply does not give enough performance. I cannot run Autodesk Inventor on it without a severe graphics lag.
So, is there a way to successfully achieve the 32GB of partitioned disk space?

  • I'm trying to install mountain lion from a partitioned disk on my HDD

i have the software and stuff set up on my partitioned part of my hdd.  but when i try to boot into it. i get a grey screen with a stop sign on it. help me if you can please

Given the model, if a MacBook3.1 (13-inch Late 2007) the last system
supported is Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5. You could get it from Mac App Store
after buying it; they'd send you an email with unlock code to get/use it.
And of course the computer has to be running at least Snow Leopard
10.6.8 to access the Mac App Store, App Store, and iTunes store, etc.
With the earlier model MacBooks, usually the better experience is with
Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and older applications that do not require much
additional system resources, yet Late 2007 upgrades to 6GB RAM.
There is more info on a variety of MacBook (2006 to 2010) builds at
everymac.com & you can check the technical specs across the board.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/index-macbook.html
Two at everymac are said to be Late 2007, while MacTracker shows
only one (with EMC & model# w/ two processor variants) Both vintage.
Sorry, the reason why it won't install:
Mt Lion OS X 10.8 can't be run in it.
    Good luck, in any event...

  • Backup multiple Macs to external HDD

I have an iMac (OS X 10.8.2) with a new Seagate BackupPlus external HDD attached by thunderbolt.  The external HDD has 5 partitions (all Mac OS X Extended Journaled format). 4 partitions are dedicated back ups for 4 Macs (the iMac connected via thunderbolt to the external HDD, plus 3 MacBookAirs (MBA's)).  The 5th partition is just for storing random data (I realize TM won't back up the data on the same drive as the TM backups, but that's ok).
Following the steps FAQ #22 on the great pondini site http://pondini.org/TM/22.html I was able to set up Time Machine to back up my iMac (with the external HDD physically attached) AND I was able to setup TM on my MacBookAir (also running OS X 10.8.2) to wirelessly back up to the external HDD attached to the iMac.
I am now trying to do the same for wife and kids MBA's (i.e., get them to have TM back up wirelessly to the external HDD that is attached to the iMac on the same network). However, while I can get TM to backup my MBA, I can't get their to work, even though I followed the same steps on their "source" MBA's as I did on mine.  The other MBAs can see the external HDD (attached to the iMac) and even remotely read/write to it (which I did as a test).  TM on their MBA sees and lets me select the appropriate partition on the external HDD, but when I try to do a backup, after a few seconds TM stops running.  It may be worth noting I also have TM backing the MBAs (including wife and kids MBAs) wirelessly to a TimeCapsule too... and that works flawlessly (I am trying to get my MBAs backed up on both my TimeCapsule and an external HDD connected to the iMac, so I have two backups).
The error log from TimeMachine Buddy on my wife's MBA shows:
    Starting manual backup
Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://melaniebernitz@Bradley%E2%80%99s%20iMac._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Mel%20MBA% 20External%20Backup

NAConnectToServerSync failed with error: 80 for url: afp://[email protected]/Mel%20MBA%20External%20Backup
    Backup failed with error: 19
To try and fix, I have:
    -- rebooted both machines.
--  ran "Verify Disk" on external HDD partition (verify disk finds no issues)
-- checked file sharing on iMac (again, the MBA's can read and write to the external HDD connected to the iMac with no problems so it has read/write/share "access" to the external HDD)
-- did full reset of Time Machine preference on my MBA per pondini.org/TM/A4.html
-- on the MBA's that won't back up wirelessly to the external drive, I can still "see" and select the external HDD (connected to the iMac) in Time Machine
-- tried running TM from different users on each MBA (including adminstrators, of course)
-- have shut off and re-turned on Time Machine
In case it helps diagnose the issue, here's the TimeMachine Buddy log for the my MBA (for which TM successfully completes the wireless backup to the external HDD on the iMac).

So, to make a long story short, even though the external HDD partitions are mounted and can be read by all MBA's....
-- My MBA has no problem backing up (via TM) to the external HDD physically attached to my iMac
-- Other MBA's can wirelessy back up (via TM) to TimeCapsule on my network, but NOT to the external HDD on the iMac (even though they can remotely see/share files on it).
All in all, I'm at a loss as to why it works for one MBA but not others (since I followed same steps to set up the MBA's for TM).
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks

What Partition Map Scheme does it have? (click the top line for the drive in Disk Utility's sidebar -- it will be shown at the lower-right).  It should be GUID, but should work if it's APM (Apple Partition Map).  If it's MBR (Master Boot Record), a Windows setup and often the way externals come from the factory, that may be the problem.  I've never been sure of the details, but there's a message somewhere that says "not all partitions may be accessible" to Time Machine with MBR.
-- tried running TM from different users on each MBA (including adminstrators, of course)
It doesn't matter what user does the setup, or even does a Back Up Now, since the actual backup runs with "root" privileges (permission to everything).  It sounds like you have the right Sharing setup on the iMac, but be sure each of those Macs is connecting as the right user on the iMac.
I've not done this myself with multiple Macs (I don't have enough hardware); only one Mac backing-up to a shared drive on another.
Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://melaniebernitz@Bradley%E2%80%99s%20iMac._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Mel%20MBA% 20External%20Backup
Looks like you've got some special characters in some names.  I realize two Macs seem to back up ok, but oddly enough, sometimes such characters in names are a problem -- they'll work fine sometimes, but not always.  See #C9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
(I am trying to get my MBAs backed up on both my TimeCapsule and an external HDD connected to the iMac, so I have two backups).
You might want to reconsider using Time Machine for both sets of backups.  It's prudent to want two separate backups in case one piece of hardware fails.  But what if there's a problem with Time Machine itself, on one (or more) of your Macs?   TM is pretty reliable, but no app is perfect.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for details, and the green box there for some alternatives (some of those may not work over a network. CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync do -- I use CCC locally, in addition to TM, but not over a network).

  • You cannot install mac os x update combined on this volume

    Hi all,
I need your precious help. I have install in my imac leopard 10.5.7 and last night I tried to update for 10.5.8, however the software update didn't identify the new update.
After that I download the update from Apple website but I couldn't do the update because of this message: "you cannot install mac os x update combined on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for update".
    Could you please help me?
    Thanks,

I ran the disk utility and saws verify disk ok. I did the same process for repair disk permissions and seems to have problems.
These warnings are accurate but according to Apple can safely be ignored. See Mac OS X 10.5: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore. IOW, They are not normally problems.
I check the volume scheme but I don't have any partition
You do have partitions & a partition scheme. To check what the scheme is, click on +the drive itself+ in the list on the left in Disk Utility. It will probably be identified as "298,1 GB WDC WD3200AAJS-40VWA0 Media" or something very similar. If it contains the startup disk, it will be the first item in the list. It will have one or more named volumes indented under it, such as "Macintosh HD."
When you have clicked on the WDC drive instead of a volume name indented under it, you should see seven items of information about it at the bottom of Disk Utility's window, to the right of an icon representing the drive. The info is in two columns. The last item in the rightmost column, below the S.M.A.R.T. Status (which should say "Verified"), should be "*Partition Map Scheme :* " & be followed by the scheme type. It should be "GUID Partition Table."
If you don't see the seven info items after selecting the drive, it may indicate a problem that needs attention, but I suspect that you just haven't looked in the right place for the info....
As for the 'cannot install' message, make sure that you have downloaded the right update, that it is not the server update version for example. You may need to download it again, discarding the first download as somehow defective.

  • You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume

    Hi,
A while ago I made this post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=448726&tstart=0) asking for post-new-harddrive installation help. I have just installed an 80GB hard drive into a iBook G3 tangerine clamshell.
It was suggested in the above post that I partition my hard drive so that the first partition had less than 8 GBs. I did this - the first partition currently has 6.9 GBs free. The other partition has 67.4 GB free.
However, when I try to proceed with the installation, I can't get past the "Select a Destination" screen because BOTH volumes are marked as "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. You cannot start up your computer using this volume."
Any advice? What have I done wrong, here?
(Also, be advised... I am a total novice at this). Your help and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    Hi Deb,
Thanks for your reply. I was unaware if this was a Panther or an iBook G3 issue, and you're right - I'll take a look on the iBook G3 boards.
In the meantime, it seems that I might have found a solution to the problem. It seems that a restart is required after the drive is partitioned, whereupon Panther recognizes the newly partitioned disk.
After the restart, Panther recognized both volumes and let me proceed with the installation. We'll see if things work out (installing Panther now).
    Thank you for your help!

  • After upgrading to mavericks, i cannot open mac app store, preview, calendar, etc

Why i cannot open mac app store, preview, calendar, software update, etc after upgrading to mavericks? How can i fix this? please help me

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Error message with offer to download the 4.1.B.0.587 update and note: "installation not possible" (because it's already there) cannot partition SD card

Hi - Recently I put the latest update on my LT15i (4.1.B.0.587), after this I rooted the phone, and everything seemed okay. But since then I keep getting an error message with an offer to download the 4.1.B.0.587 update and the note: "installation not possible" (because it's already there). The news line on top shows a red exclamation mark all the time. It seems to me that it is due to this error that I cannot partition my SD card. Does anybody have an idea how to fix that? Thanks much in advance, and happy holidays - nerissa

  • Error code -50 on boot partition (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) )

I`m often experiencing error code -50 when trying to change or move files on boot partition (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) ) on my MacBook PRO 5,5.
I already know that this error is related to MS-DOS formatted disks. But this one is all the time Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
All the files are created on Mac OS X 10.6.7 - so there can`t be a problem with a filename.
Is there another solution than corrupted harddisk?

while the next error code -50, I looked into Console and kernel says: "BootCache: too many history clusters (151, limit 151)". So that`s the cause of error, but how can I manage with it?
I tried this one in Terminal
    code:
    /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl stop
but no success. "-BootCacheControl: could not stop cache: Operation not permitted"

  • How to make Recovery Partition in my new HDD (Win8.1)

    I already re-install my Win8 with usb.
But after finish the installation (I choose Fully Clean in my new HDD), why there is no Recovery Partition like my old HDD (original HDD)?
how to make a Recovery Partition in my new HDD?
    Thx

    Creating the recovery partition
Right-click the start orb, and start 'Disk Management'.
Shrink the C: drive by let's say 20-30GB.
Then create a new Partition and assign the R: label to it and name it RECOVERY.
Then open command prompt as administrator and type: 'recimg /createimage <directory>',
In this case: 'recimg /createimage R:\' to save it on the new partition.
This step may consume a lot of time.
Now we need to register the newly created recovery image: 'recimg /setcurrent <directory>'
    'recimg /setcurrent R:\'
    Voila you are done.
    Restoring from recovery partition
You may want to use this restoring method by default, because it is the easiest way to do so if your recovery partition is still intact. If not, look at the other recovery methods to see which suits you best. This is usually the way you reset or refresh your Windows installation if you purchase a computer from a brand like Lenovo instead of building one yourself
Press the Windows-key + C to open the charms bar or swipe in from the right.
    Click Settings.
    Click Change PC Settings.
Click Update & Recovery in the menu on the left.
    Click Recovery.
If all your documents are safe and sound in your user folder, you can use Refresh your PC without affecting files. However I still recommend taking a back-up... If you want to do a complete reinstallation of Windows and also clean your user folder in the process then choose Remove everything and reinstall Windows.

Default, Windows will not recognize Mac formatted disks.
A number of applications can enable Windows to read them.
Take a look at this page: http://www.macwindows.com/disks2.html
I don't have experience with any of the apps. mentioned on that page, so I can't tell you how they perform.
Maybe posting in the iTunes for Windows forum will result in specific information.

  • You cannot install Mac OS X Server Update on this volume. (10.5.6)

    I hope someone can help!
I started with 10.5.5, but was having lots of problems with MobileMe. I have downloaded 10.5.6 which I have heard is more stable but it won't allow me to install it with the following error message "You cannot install Mac OS X Server Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." I have then downloaded 10.5.7 which installs fine but does not fix my original problem and I know it is less stable that 10.5.6. I have tried to install 10.5.6 again but same problem. Any ideas of what I have to do to my HD to make it happen?
The main problems I am having with MobileMe is registering the computer (it wont happen), syncing (it wont happen because the computer isn't registered), and publishing iweb updates.
    Thanks, J

You downloaded the wrong updater version. You downloaded an updater for OS X Server but do not have OS X Server installed, hence the error. The 10.5.6 Combo Updater is here.
You will have to provide more information about the problem you are having with MobileMe. And, you should login to your MM account online so you can post your problem in their specific forums.
Before you install a system update I suggest you see the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a bootable backup of your current working system:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    C. Important: Please read before installing
    1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
    2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
    3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. Download and install update(s):
    1. Use Software Update, or
    2. Download standalone updater(s).
