Cannot perform factory recovery on W530

Hello,
After I got my W530 I used the "Factory Recovery Disks" from the Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools collection to create a factory backup on a USB stick. The application finished successfully. Later, after making a stupid error I wanted to use the factory backup to reinstall the original system. However, after invoking the boot menu (with F12 on startup), and selecting the USB stick with the factory backup, the system did nothing (it simply returned to the boot menu). Does anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong?
Regards,
bostjanv

If just setting the partition active doesn't make it bootable, here's one more thing to try:
Fully prepare a 2nd flash drive per those instructions (the whole procedure this time - clean, etc...) and copy the contents of the 1st drive to the 2nd.

  • Satellite P300-1A8 cannot get factory recovery to work

    Hi there,
    Been having lot's of problems on this machine. It started with a nearly full C: partition which made Vista invoke a drive compression.
    After that the laptop would not boot; after POST there was just a blank screen (no flashing cursor). The tap 'F8' solution from the manual would not work.
    With no booting system, i tried using a Vista recovery CD. But this would not even boot, even after setting BIOS to boot from CD first, or even using the F12 boot selection screen.
    I had to physically remove the hard drive from the laptop to get the CD to boot. But obviously couldn't do much after that. At this point i'm thinking that the hard drive compress utility had corrupted the boot sector.
    So i connected the Hard drive to a desktop PC, Backed up all 3 partitions (1 hidden plus C: 'Vista' and D: which held the HDDRecovery files)
    I then tried formatting then drive and reinstating the partitions. This is the point i'm having problems with.
    I used Boot-us software to make the first partition hidden which is what it was. Hidden. Plus i left it without assigning a drive letter.
    On the second partition i used windows backup to restore the C: drive, this software didn't restore all files by the way it left out important ones such as Winload.exe, which is why i had to do a factory restore.
    On the third partition i restored the 'HDDRecovery' folder.
    Now after editing the BCD file i was able to enter the Toshiba recovery environment from a bootable CD that i created from the hidden partition.
    The problem i am now having is that factory recovery is failing because it can't find the HDDRecovery files, the error it shows up is:- 'The recovery of the operating system is impossible! Could not find HDD Recovery folder on second drive of the first hard disk. There is no valid HDD Recovery environment on this computer.
    I assume that by 'second drive' they mean second partition. Because when i did a test with a different partition layout, leaving out the hidden one and having just the C: 'Vista' partition and D: 'HDDRecovery' partition, i managed to get past this error. But was then stopped by a Diskpart check that looked for 3 partitions. I added a third partition to see would that would do and Diskpart completed it's check selected the second partition and erased it!! Note that partition had the HDDRecovery files on it.
    I hope i have explained this well enough, apologies for the length of post.
    In short i would like to get the factory recovery environment to work given that alterations have been made to the hard drive partitions.

    Hi, mate
    Unfortunately, I don't think you can recover the factory settings even having Hdd recovery folder. I had the same situation like you. i wanted to install Windows Xp on my A500 and didn't make a recovery disk. So, the factory settings gone and no recovery disk was available. I didn't want to pay money for a recovery disk. I just got windows 7 copy disk, installed it with all drivers and application I need. Then, made a hdd image of my current Os with acronis true image, created a recovery zone and that's all. Now, if I want to restore Os, i just press f11 on startup, enter acronis and it restores from Hdd image. It takes me 10 minutes to wait..

  • Aspire Switch 10 Factory Recovery Backup

    Performed Factory Recovery Backup to 32GB USB drive as recommended by the Aspire Switch 10 Manual which said "a minimum of 16GB of space would be required".  Instructions on Backup screen says only 8GB required. Backup actually took up only 5.8GB!  Backed up again to another 32GB USB drive to check this & again took up only 5.8GB.  Apparently neither the Manual nor the backup screen are correct as to how much space is needed. Why the discrepancy?  I don't know if I have a good backup or not since I got only 5.8GB on my USB drive on both of my attempts. Had similar problem with Drivers & Applications backup.  Manual says it may take several DVDs, but Backup Screen says only one disk, or about 0.33GB.  Performed this backup twice and both times all I got on my USB drive was a shortcut of 1KB to the "Resource Center", whatever that is!  Has anyone else had similar results.  It would seem that both backups could be made to one 8GB USB drive if my results are correct.

    Yes, there are some discrepancy on the recovery backup. i would suggest you to use the windows 8.1 integrated utility instead of the Acer erecovery. you can do a full system image, so you don't have to re-install everything (programs, settings) to an usb drive and create a recovery USB media to boot from and re-load the system image and help you to fix boot issues. i suggest you to do a system image when you have all your programs installed and tested the system is stable. Recovery drive:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-usb-recovery-drive full system image:To open System Image BackupSwipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
    (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.)Enter File History in the search box, tap or click File History, and then click System Image Backup.System image backup appears on the bottom left of your screen, it can take a while to appear, so be patient.

  • W530 unable to create factory recovery disc's

    Hi all, Happy with new W530 but unable to create factory recovery discs.. Searched and found possible solutions in knowledge base and forum but none worked Until know Files for recovery media not found... (although i have two lenovo recovery partitions on SDD) Called support and they offered website to order recovery disc's (not for free???) Ok... then..filling in the necessay forms and providing all data ended up in not able to choose for Dutch language recovey disc's . How to proceed?

    In my opinion, there should be a secure way for the owner of the machine to download the images in .ISO format so you can burn them.  Of course information would need to be verified to prove you are entitled to do so, but this doesn't need to be overly complicated.
    Don't forget you can always get a Windows 7 disk and use the serial number under your battery to install Windows from scratch.
    The only time I use the factory image disk set is if I decide to sell a machine.  I'll image it back to the factory state.  It's a pretty rare event.

  • Factory recovery partition on windows 8 in Asus X551CALaptop

    I purchased Asus x551CA notebook on 22nd Feb 2014. After about 45 days I formated hard disk partition
    on which Activated Windows 8 operating systme was installed.I formatted an repartitioned HDD.
    And I installed and uninstalled windows8 and windows 8.1 90 days enterprise evaluation edition. Because of
    these link to factory recovery partition is broken.
    I have created system image disks which are working to restore system. I forgot how I created these disks. May be
    I did control panel>recovery>file history>windows 7 file recovery. So these disks should be System Image Backup.
    I think these are not OEM recovery disks. When I insert these disks during reset and refresh I get a message
    that "Media you inserted is not valid". And I am able to create system image on second partition of hard disk of
    my laptop.I have also got product key of windows 8 by a program jellybean keyfinder.
    To restore from discs created by me. I insert a repair disc then I go to UEFI settings. Then I change boot preferences to
    boot from DVD. Then I go to Restore form images. Then computer asks me to insert my discs no from 1 to 4. One after the other. Then computer restore to windows 8. It looks alike as it was factory made.
    -When I try to create a recovery drive by going to control panel> Recovery >create a recovery drive
    Recovery drive dialog box appears but with grayed check box of "copy the recovery partition from PC
    to the recovery drive". Please tell me how can it come with not grayed dialog box so that I can copy
    recovery partition to USB pen drive? When notebook was new this check box was not grayed and I was able to
    copy recovery partition on USB pen drive.
    -Since I cannot copy recovery partition to USB therefore I also cannot reset and refresh windows 8 on
    the basis of USB. It was working when notebook was new.
    -And reset or refresh also not working on the basis of hidden recovery partition. How can it will start
    working? It was working when notebook was new.
    -I have tried diskpart command do make hidden recovery partition visible. But it becomes invisible
    after restart. I used following command
    1. Command Prompt Run as administer.
    2. diskpart
    3. list disk
    4. select disk 0
    5. list partition
    6. select partition 6
    7. assign letter z
    by these commands hidden recovery partition becomes visible and again when I restart laptop it becomes invisible.
    And I am not able to do anything with recovery partition E.G. copy the recovery partition to USB
    When I created a system image using the following command I became able to refresh my PC. May be it was refreshing
    on the basis of newly created image.
    recimg /createimage D:\IMAGE81
    recimg /setcurrent D:\IMAGE81
    But it is also not working this time and it gives a message "Drive on which windows is installed is locked unlock it".
    May because I installe AVG antivirus it locked the drive.
    I also used REAgentC command
    reagentc /setreimage /path F:\Recovery\WindowsRE\ /target C:\Windows /bootkey 4300
    Maybe I executed above command once again I used D: instead of F:
    And I was able to refresh PC but I was not able to Reset. And I was not able to copy recovery partition on USB
    by going to control panel> Recovery >create a recovery drive.
    Recovery drive dialog box appears but with grayed check box of "copy the recovery partition from PC
    to the recovery drive".
    ((I am giving images of computer management in first_image no partition was created it was in factory made state. And
    in second_Image I created an extra disk partition which is present on disk this time.)) I cannot give images because
    of my account is not varified.
    So I am giving output of diskpart command to understand disk partitions.
    C:\>diskpart
    DISKPART> list disk

    Volume 6               Restore          NTFS   Partition     20 GB    Healthy      Hidden
    in the beginnig instead of D: (130 GB) and F:(128 GB) there was only one partition D:(258 GB) 130+128 GB.
    Please tell me answers of following quesions:-
    1. Tell me how to regain the link to factory recovery drive.
    2. Please tell me how can I refresh and reset PC on the basis of Hidden Factory Recovery Partition. And how can I copy Hidden Factory Recovery Partition on USB and DVDs. I have 16GB USB pen drive and a DVD writer. So I can use these two storage media
    only and except these I have 500GB HDD on my laptop.
    4. I want to know that Factory recovery partition is useful or not. Should I delete it.
    3. I have DVDs as I said above. On the basis of these I can reinstall windows 8. When I created these discs windows 8 was present on laptop. Currently windows 8.1 is present on laptop. Please tell me how can I create my own hidden recovery partition for
    windows 8. I have upgraded to windows 8.1. So please tell me can I create my own hidden recovey partition for windows 8.1.
    5. Can I download contents of factory recovery partition from internet.
    6. Should I go to shopkeeper. He repairs computers as well. Probably he will manage for me to get Recovery partition discs. In this case these DVDs may be different from my DVDs as I mentioned above. Maybe only thing I get from these discs that I will
    able to reset and refresh computer.
    7. Microsoft shoult create a program that can re-establish link to factory recovery partition. And this program should be able to create new hidden recovery partition as well. As I have upgraded to windows 8.1. So I think I should have a new hidden recovery partition
    for Windows 8.1. I think I can above thing my other way. If I create new set of DVDs by going to control panel>recovery>   file history>System Image Backup. It will create discs for windows 8.1. And I will able to restore system to windows
    8.1 by these discs. And for windows 8 I have already discs. But these discs will only work by changing boot options(by choosing UEFI) and image recovery. And reset and refresh functions will not work then in such situation factory recovery partition
    will become useless. Then such situation I should delete factory recovery partition as it is useless.
    8. At beginnign I also tried AI recovery burner. After trying it for 2-3 days I came to know that AI recovery burner is not for windows 8. There should be a tutorial for these thing so that people like me not waste their time.

    I used a software named UNDELETE on my hidden recovery partition to recover it. I get some files by this software. Important thing is that I got a 2.84 GB file named 00eebc9d.rb in dir D:\recovered1\Files Detected by their Signatures\Unknown Application\.rb.
    This file may be useful. Please suggest me how can I use these files to reset and refresh my OS. I used some dir commands as follows to get list of these files:
    dir /s >f:\list.txt
    dir /s /a:s >f:\list2.txt
    Some files were system files so these file were not shown by first dir command. So I used second dir command.
    Output of dir /s >f:\list.txt
     Volume in drive D is DATA

  • "Cannot perform operation, connection is closed" with Open MQ 4.4

    I am using Sun MQ 4.4 with Glassfish 2.1.1 on Red Hat 5.7.
    I am able to install glassfish cluster and all the instances are running fine. But, when I try to send a message to a topic, I get following exception
    javax.jms.IllegalStateException: [C4062]: Cannot perform operation, connection is closed.
    at com.sun.messaging.jmq.jmsclient.ConnectionImpl.checkConnectionState(ConnectionImpl.java:2468)
    at com.sun.messaging.jmq.jmsclient.XAConnectionImpl.createSession(XAConnectionImpl.java:105)
    at com.sun.messaging.jms.ra.ConnectionAdapter.createSession(ConnectionAdapter.java:383)
    Following is part of the stateless EJB where I am creating the session.
    @PostConstruct()
    private void init() {
    if (connectionFactory == null) {
    if (log.isTraceEnabled()) log.trace("Connection factory not set. Retrieving from server context.");
    InitialContext ic = new InitialContext();
    connectionFactory = (ConnectionFactory) ic.lookup("jms/testConnectionFactory");
    if (log.isTraceEnabled()) log.trace("Creating JMS connection.");
    connection = connectionFactory.createConnection();
    @WebMethod()
    public void send(){
    Session session = null;
    session = connection.createSession(true, Session.SESSION_TRANSACTED);
    I am trying to install these on a couple of new machines. Same application works on other machines so I am guessing this is a configuartion issue somewhere on these servers.
    My question is what would be a good way to find the cause of this failure.
    I have turned on log level to finest for ejb-container, jms, RA through glassfish Admin console, but no useful information.
    Also, I don't have the name of the servers in DNS yet. I am using IP address for specifying instances.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks
    Vineet

    Hi Tom,
    I used the demo/helloworld/helloworldmessage.java sample.
    By the way, I should add that the broker log contains lines like:
    [B1066] Closing [email protected]:2461 because "[B0061]: Client exited without closing connections"
    Is this what one would expect for a connection.close() ?
    It almost seems that this is happening only when the connection is nulled explicitly or the connection object is destroyed.
    One last thing:
    I was led down the garden path. The reason for the server being thread starved was that there were indeed connections not being closed/nulled.
    Thanks in advance,
    Patrice

  • T500 - Windows Update no longer works after using factory recovery disks.

    I'm running  Windows 7 32bit.  I needed to restore my T-500 hard drive because of a fatal windows registry error caused by a 3rd party registry cleaner/tuner software... Windows 7 was DOA .
    I used the factory recovery disks I created after I first fired up the laptop in April this year, all went well, Windows 7 booted up, and I went through the "Starting Widows for the first time" setup dialog, Windows 7 sucessfully activated... also verfifed it on the Microsoft website.
    Went into control panel to have windows update pull down all of the critical updates released after I got my Thinkpad and I got a pop up saying "windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
    I checked... the windows update service is running, so is BITS.  Following suggestions from Microsoft support, I have 1)deleted the softwaredistribution folder from C:\windows, 2) run their "fixit tool", 3) renamed the CatRoot2 folder in C:\windows'system32, all to no avail each time I tried to use windows update after each "fix".
    I decided to check here if anyone here has gone down this path before and ask what fixed it?
    I'm waiting for Microsoft support to reply to my last email informing them the last instructions to rename the CatRoot2 folder and retry windows update failed. They now have a copy of my windowsupdate.log file sent to them.
    How about it... does this situation sound familiar to anyone?
    Thanks.

    I run into the same problem with fresh installation of W7 Pro on T530 with 1TB samsung disk.
    This solution worked for me:
        Running check for updates will trigger this error message:
    “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.”
    Solution:
    1.    Go to Administrative Tools/Services, and stop the Windows Update service.
    2.    Then go to the folder c: /Windows/SoftwareDistribution and delete all of the files and folders.
    3.    Then go back to Services and restart the Windows Update service which will recreate all of those folders again.
    4.    Then manually run the Update Service and everything should work.

  • Do I need to create partition on msata before factory/recovery install?

    I am trying to use the recovery media to install the factory settings W7 to a newly installed Intel 310.
    I have installed the 310, and it is definitely there and recognized by the computer.  I have removed my HDD and plugged in a DVD drive.  Also on hand are the successfully created recovery media (1 CD + 3 DVDs).
    I put in the CD and boot via the DVD drive.  The Windows screen comes on and then it goes to R&R.  From there, I cannot for the life of me figure how how to start the ball rolling on installing W7 to the msata drive.
    The two options presented appear to be to install a previous recovery backup, and none are listed.  Or to recover from an image, which then takes me to a screen that does not seem to identify an image no matter which of the four recover discs I put in.
    Is there any Lenovo page that shows step by step to re-installing recovery media from disk?  I'm not a complete newb so this is frustrating.
    My only guess perhaps is that I need to create a partition on msata before starting the factory recovery.  Not sure why that would be the case in that the factory recovery probably has utilities built in to do so, but I can't think of anything else.
    Thanks for any help.

    Tried it again.  Didn't work.  But it's now clear to me that Lenovo R&R is failing to recognize the recovery disk that it created earlier today.  R&R said the recovery media was successfully created, but I guess not.
    I will try installing from a Win7 installation disc.  Thanks for your help.

  • Can't create a factory recovery disk using the recovery partition that came with my computer

    When I push the Q: recovery drive> Create recovery media, I get a message saying
    "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\factory recovery\recovburncd.exe'. Make sure you types the name correctly, and then try again."
    How do I go about fixing this and creating a recovery disk?

    You can purchase replacements from AppleCare:
    Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
    To contact product and tech support visit online support site.
    However, you might want to consider upgrading to Snow Leopard - $29.00 at any local Apple retailer or the Online Store. This may actually be less costly than purchasing replacement discs, although the replacement discs will have the Apple Hardware Test that is not going to be on the Snow Leopard DVD, nor will any of your pre-bundled software.

  • Windows Update 80072EE2 after Factory recovery

    Hello everyone!
       I just did a complete factory recovery on a Lenovo 3000 K100, with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bits.
    The recovery was successeful. (I used the Recovery partition that came from the Lenovo)
    The device manager has nothing wrong.
    But when I try to do a Windows Update, I have the error 80072EE2
    Installed Microsoft Security Essentials, and when triyng to update it, the update fail, telling me that the connection timed out. (please note that I was able to download it online)
    I can surf on the web, go on different websites, but when I go to Microsoft website, it takes time before the webpage loads sometime!
    Some people said that I should remove the UseWUServer (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU) from my registery, but this key is missing in my registery. I cannot find it.
    So, tried other fixes suggested in forums, like reset my internet settings (but it's a fresh windows install)
    Tried in cmd "net stop wuauserv" and then "start" ... the service is running normally...
    In services, Windows Update is on Automatic (Delayed) Running. (I even changed it to Automatic)
    I renamed the Hosts file, and flushed the DNS. The Hosts file should be generated automatically after being removed.
    There is no Third party Firewall. The only antivirus installed, is Microsoft Security Essentials.
    There is no softwares installed after the Factory Recovery.
    I tried to ping www.google.com, and there is 25% loss, with a connection timed out, after two responses.
    There is a 100% loss when I ping microsoft.com, with a connection timed out.
    I tried to disable WIndows FIrewall, but doesn't solve the problem.
    I reset Internet explorer settings again... Nothing is solved.
    There is no PROXY in the LAN Settings, of Internet explorer...
    Uninstalled the Network drivers (in device manager), and reinstalled them... problem not solved...
    So, does anyone have an idea? I'm out of solutions...
    What's weird is that it's a Fresh Factory recovery, it should be free of issues... ??

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941
    This might be a dumb question, but did you try to let MS fix it automatically?

  • Can't load Vista from factory recovery disks?

    I have an X200 running XP. The X200 was delivered with XP installed and Vista recovery disks. I wanted to see how Vista performed so I decided to load the Vista from the factory recovery disks. There are 3 disks...Disk1 Start Recovery Disk, Disk2 OS System Recovery Disk, and DIisk3 Applications and Drivers Recovery Disk. I have an external Lenovo DVD drive and the BIOS is set to boot from this first.
    I placed Disk 1 into the drive and rebooted. The system loaded and the Rescue and Recovery program came up, did it's thing, and asked for Disk 1 to be inseryed. Well, Disk 1 was already inserted but I ejected and re-inserted it - it said this was not the correct disk. So, I figured Disk 2 might be "disk 1" in this context but it didn't like that one either coughing up the same incorrect disk message. So, only disk 3 is left so I tried that too, same results.
    OK, what am I doing wrong or might Lenovo have include incorrect disks.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    thanks

    There is a chance that the discs included is not suitable for your model type or the discs itself are bad, call Lenovo and ask for another set.

  • Performed Destructive Recovery (I Think?) on my HP Pavilion m7480n and immediately get infected?

    Hello to everyone on the Forum,
    First off, I would like to mention that my computer skills are average at best..So, I apologize in advance for complicating matters ..My computer was recently infected by a Trojan.Agent/Gen-Cryptic Virus..With some help, I was able to delete the virus from my computer..Unfortunately, my computer wasn't the same after the Trojan/Virus was removed..I was then told, that it would be best to perform a fresh install of Windows XP.
    I've performed two fresh installs of Windows XP(Destructive Recovery's- reformatting Hard Drive..Hopefully, I did them correctly), and for the life of me I can't figure out why my computer is immediately infected..As soon as I complete the System Recovery, I try to update the Norton Suite that is pre-installed on my computer..Unfortunately, I cannot perform a complete update because I keep getting a message telling me that some updates are corrupted..I immediately install MalwareBytes, Avast Antivirus and proceed to run scans for each program..I constantly get the same infections on my computer..I will post the results of the scans below..I'm completely stumped and want to pull out my hair ..lol..Can someone please Help!!

    My advice, format the hard drive completely, then run the Recovery from CD/DVD set made when the PC was new or a set purchased from HP.
    First, some questions.  I would think that the infections are not part of the recovery, but just in case, has a scan been done of the Media that is used for the Recovery process?  Obviously it has to be done with a non-infected PC.  If the Recovery is being done from a DVD set, it should be OK, but it would not hurt to check.  Second, the Recovery, when completed: Is the WinXP SP2 or SP3?  From a non-infected PC, download the SP3 to a CD and then run that before connecting to the internet.  Also make sure the anti-virus software and firewall software is installed before connecting to the internet.  One could even load  MalwareBytes.  Run a scan before connecting to the internet.  You may have to research how to get those items installed clean without allowing the suspect PC to connect to the internet.  Report back if there is still an infection after doing it this way.
    BTW: How did the weather bug get on a clean system?

  • A few questions about managing partitions when performing a recovery

    Hello everybody,
    I purchased an L505-13Z about to weeks ago for personal use and light audio editing work. In these two weeks I took the time to explore and test this computer's performance and found it suitable for my needs, as it withstands even havier audio work then I will need, as tested. I am really happy with this laptop! Anyway, few optimizations I did for the audio software have wiped some needed features of the computer, so I needed to install the OS again.. Basically, I was always used to have the system install only wiping the system drive, leaving the "D:Data" partition intact. I notice this isn't the case with system recovery, as after recovery, both system and data partitions were wiped. of course everything is backed up on an external drive, but every time I perform a recovery I will need to copy everything back from the backup drive? I missed the point of this - it's exactly like having all my data saved on the system partition.. What's the need for the data partition then?
    Is there a way to perform a recovery and leave the "Data" partition untouched?
    My second question is if it's possible to change the size of the partitions somehow? I think that it's a bit useless to have 230G of free space for the system partition. For my needs, 100G is enough, and I could use the remaining 130G for the Data partition, I don't know why the drive is just split in half by default... (I am aware that a partition size change must wipe ALL data on the drive).
    Thanks everybody in advance for any help!

    If you use HDD recovery procedure - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9102IR0000R01.htm - the structure and data on second partition will not be deleted.
    So, if you want to install OS using HDD recovery option you can move all important data from partition C to partition D.
    The whole HDD will be deleted if you use recovery DVDs for OS installation.
    You should not change partitions structure because it can have negative influence on further HDD recovery procedure. It can happen that recovering data will not be found anymore.
    Please note: second partition D is not some kind of recovery or system partition. It is normal and usual HDD partition. There is just saved Toshiba recovery image in folder called HDDRecovery.
    Best thing you can do, I done it too, is to enter properties for this folder and define it as invisible.
    You will not be irritated with this folder. It is there but you cannot see it and there is no way you can delete it somehow. Use this partition as usual. Create own folders, copy data there, simply do your usual work.

  • Lack of Factory Recovery Disks option - from where download setup file?

    Hi,
    I have just installed new OS (Windows 7 Pro) on my T420. Unfortunatelly I cannot find proper URL to download software like this below:
    That is well known Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools board. In previous pre-installed OS I got it, but now after new OS installation, I did not managed to download Factory Recovery Disks module (cannot find it)... So my question is - where can I get it? And how can I get view like on the attached screen?
    Another thing is thinkpad icon in devices view in Control Panel. On previous installed OS I had nice T420 icon, now ordinary pc icon instead. How can I change it?
    And finally, I had also a Recovery Partition. Now I do not remember what I have done in order to have it in previous pre-installed Windows. Could you please explain it to me?
    Regards,
    Marcin
    Solved!

    Thanks for the newest update. If I understand what you are saying:
    (1) The SSD has plain jane windows via a windows install. and runs fine. I ASSUME you copied personal files (pics, quicken) from the old HDD to the SSD.
    (2) The old HDD is now in the ultra bay/usb serving as a 2nd drive to hold data. Did you ever reformat the old HDD to make it a true blank 2nd drive? ie, did you remove the ability of old HDD to act like a bootable lenovo system?
    (3) Your new plain jane SSD have no Lenovo products, and No Lenovo service parition.
    ==
    It the above is true great!!.  If the old HDD is a bootable Lenovo windows, down the road, I would copy loved data from the old HDD to external USB, DVD, or to SSD. Reformat the HDD to make it a true data only HDD, then copy loved data to it. Having a bootable HDD and SSD, dual boot, makes for a mess.
    If you installed RNR on the SSD, all the files are stored on the C drive of the SSD. The boot stuff is changed around.  It is bootable to bring up standalone RNR via PF11..  It will "act" like standalone RNR on the old system.  The factory recovery option will Not be available, since you have no Lenovo recovery partition.
    Your blue button wont work, big deal.

    I had the same issue going from vista to win7.
    I have 2 hdd, C drive(vista) and  (D) drive(data). I always order my systems with two HDD, simpler.
    I had to disconnect the D drive during windows install( windows from best buy) to prevent a mess.  Windows chooses 1st found. Do no destroy my D drive thank you.  When shipped from the factory, the service partion was on 320GB drive, 160 GB drive was empty. I wanted it the other way.....(fixed, call the support center and get recovery disk set).
    Thus my windows  win 7 install erased my 160GB drive(choose the erase option).  a 160GB drive with a Vista Lenovo drive and say, windows install,  Replace the C drive only, will create a mess, the Lenovo vista recovery partition is left). It will boot, but RNR will not install (win7 with Vista recovery).
    ===
    Take SSD plain jane windows. Download System update, not much will  change. Download RNR(you did this) . You took a RNR backup to DVD or USB. You created a RNR BACKUP to DVD? great!  This 1st DVD is standalone RNR boot rest of the DVD's are data.  Last DVD is called FINAL and contains the Index file to recovery the SSD.
    ==
    You can now recover your SSD should it burn up. You have no NEED for a Lenovo factory recovery set nor a Lenovo service partition.
    Down the road after your make the old HDD a data drive, backup using RNR to old HDD,a data drive.  This is called SECOND in rnr.  backup weekly.
    I backup weekly to Second.  I NEVER back to LOCAL(the C drive)
    I backup using RNR monthly to external USB-HDD. (not a memory stick). 1TB usb-hdd, $65 or so at best buy(on sale). BUT format it first, diskpart set active. RNR  adds standalone bootables to the usb-hdd,. But it may not boot if the USB is not preformated and set active.  This is covered in another post.
    I backup using RNR every 6 months to DVD.
    I use other software, www.nero.com to back up personal data, daily and monthly.
