Cannot perform JetDirect firmware upgrades

I was recently tasked with making sure the firmware was up to date for all the printers in the building.  I still have 8 more that I have been unable to update.  I used HP Download Manager first, and it was very good at telling me which printers needed firmware updates, but it failed every time I tried to actually perform an update.  So, I downloaded the firmware files manually, then used the web interface of the printers to do the firmware updates.  Except that a number of them did not include an "upgrade firmware" option.  So, then I tried to FTP the firmware file to those printers, following the instructions here.  Every time I tried that, the printer would just start printing garbage, interpreting the binary file I was sending it as if it was a print job.  Of note: the instructions say to do a "cd DOWNLOAD" command, but not to worry if that directory does not exist.  On every one that failed, and just printed garbage, the "cd DOWNLOAD" command failed.  I even connected directly to the printer with a crossover cable, but then you still have to follow the FTP instructions, and it does the same thing.
So where do I go from here?  How do I perform a firmware upgrade without the printer interpreting it as a print job?
Here are the models of the JetDirect cards I am trying to update:
J4169A
J6057A
J3113A
J3111A
J2552B

First thing you can try is just to save the firmware file to the root (c:/) and run the ftp command from the root which negates any need to change directories.
Second thing to consider - what printers are the JD cards installed in?  Some of the printers will automatically update the firmware for the JD card when you do the printer firmware.  More common in those with internal JD cards but I have seen a few printers do the double update with the accessory card.
(oh, and you are ftping to the IP address of the printer, not connecting via parallel, correct?)
One of the simplest ways to ftp is to use an IE browser (preferably IE 6), enable view folder option for ftp in the advanced internet options and then use the browser to ftp to the printer (ftp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx).  You should see a small folder icon.  Some printers need to have the firmware file dropped beside the folder for it to work, some need it dropped right on the folder for it to work.
If that still doesn't work - drop the cards in one of the printers that did allow the update and see if that makes a difference.  You could also try cold resetting the printers with the cards installed in case they were managed by Webjet Admin at one point and updates were blocked. You could also download and use Webjet Admin to do the firmware upgrades (this is a great tool for fleet management and being able to configure multiple families of similar printers at the same time from the comfort of your desk!)

I am running a 3G model with OS - 3.1.3 I downloaded the new iTunes and when I try to update my iPhone it stays on the backup window for hours with out changing. The only time that it got past the backup function it fails to complete and gives the follwoing error message - "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000065)" - Has any one else had these issues?

I am having the exact same issue. Can not upgrade my 3GS. iTunes will not recognize my iPhone. Sometimes I get a "back up failed" error message. Sometimes I get the "0xE8000065" error.
I have cleanly re-installed iTunes 9.2. I have restarted the computer and the iphone with every step. iPhoto recognizes the phone just fine. It's iTunes that is having the issue.
I am running Leopard 10.5.8. But I noticed that lot's of Windows users are having the same problem. I am curious if any intel OS X users are having this issue.
Are any intel OS X users having this problem?

  • **SPA2102 FIRMWARE UPGRADE PROBLEM WITH 5.2.12

I'm having problems loading firmware 5.2.12 onto my SP2102-R ATA.  I have my laptop PC running Windows 7 directly with an ethernet cable from my laptop to the ethernet connection on the back of the SPA2102.  I run the .bin file and In order to get the software to the upgrade stage I have to enter ****, 73738 1# to move to the next stage.  I have now been waiting for 1/2 hour waiting for firmware download request from SPA.  IT DOESN'T GET PASS THIS STAGE.......CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL WHAT I'M DOING WRONG OR WHAT I NEED TO DO DIFFERENT?
    Thanks......

Based on my experience with the SPA2102-NA, it is not necessary to do a factory reset (*73738) in order to perform a firmware upgrade/downgrade.
However, now that you have done so, any and all previous user settings will have been reset to the original factory settings (including user set passwords - assuming your ATA is an un-locked SPA2102-NA).
If you think the firmware 5.2.12 is faulty, then repeat the upgrade/downgrade process by downgrading back to an earlier version:

  • HP8600 Plus won't send or receive fax after firmware upgrade

    Hi All,
Suddenly my HP8600, refuses to send or receive fax. I get the message "Can'r send or receive fax" immediatley after power up.  I have a strong feeling that the problem started after an automatic firmware upgrade to version OJP8600_N911a_R1435A  .  Unfortunately there does not seem to be a simple way to downgrade or is there?   HP refuses to tell.  I have checked the telphone line and the connection also tested with another fax machine.  I tried resetting several times without any success. It is just out of warranty and works perfectly in all other respects.
     Do someone have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

Hello @Bondra12 , welcome to the forums
I understand you now cannot send or receive a fax, and I am here to share my suggestions with you.
No, you cannot reverse a firmware upgrade from my knowledge. I would suggest however, troubleshooting the fax problem by trying out the steps from this guide: Cannot Send or Receive Faxes
If the problem does happen to continue, and I wish that it doesn't, to give us a call to see if you have any out of warranty printer options.

  • N97 cannot use as modem after firmware upgrade

Hi, sorry if this is a repeat post but driven to distraction.
I use my N97 as a modem to connect to the internet from my laptop when I'm away from home. Since upgrading the firmware I cannot connect through 1 touch access or direct through dial up.
When attempting to connect through 1 touch I get as far as connecting device and then I get the message "Failed to connect device".
I have removed the modem through internet properties and reinstalled PC Suite (after using PC suite cleaner). I am running windows 7 but was connecting through 7 before the firmware upgrade.
Now I'm at a loss. Anyone got any ideas?

Saw another post here that said they make a completely new network with a different name and it worked. I decided to give it a try and it actually did work!!! Don't have any clue why but I don't really care since my network is running again.

  • Firmware upgrade cannot be installed on my 42UL863

    Hi!
My TV does not find the any new firmware on the net, I comes back with the message that there is no any new firmware. I have 19.3.49.227 30 Aug 2011 but there is 19.3.61.7 for UL863G from feb 2012 on the toshiba site..
When I extract and load this on a USB stick (i tried several) upgrade seems (after Yes click) to start, the "upgrade" popup shows up but the progressbar does not change and it comes back after a while with something like "upgrade file cannot be found"
    Any ideas?
    Cheers!

    Hi
Here is another [How to update the firmware|http://fget.dl.toshiba.com/manual/procedure/10002/procedure_of_downloading.pdf?fromPid=%2Ftsb-dtv%2FNA%2FGB%2FEN%2F42UL863G.html&f=procedure_of_ downloading.pdf]
Not all USB Thumb drives will work for Firmware Upgrading. The USB
Thumb Drive should be formatted as a FAT or FAT16 fi le system and NOT FAT32. If the
Firmware Upgrade does not work try a different USB Thumb Drive.
Copy the extracted downloaded upgrade file(s) including directories if present to the blank
USB Thumb Drive. Now follow the instructions in the Installation Instruction.

  • Cannot connect to internet after airport firmware upgrade

I bought a new Airport Extreme Base Station, hooked it up, and it worked just fine. Then it asked for a firmware upgrade, which I installed. Now the base station will not connect to the internet. I've tried re-booting my cable modem, re-starting the base station, etc. No luck. Pending an answer to this question, I re-installed my prior Airport Extreme base station, and it worked just fine. It wants me to do a firmware update, but I'm understandably reluctant.
    Thanks for your help.
    Bob

Thanks Chris. One of posts in this thread mentioned the possibility of a corrupt file in the operating system. I reloaded 10.7 using a flash drive I made and then did a hard reset of my Airport Extreme. That solved the problem. I hope this helps.

  • Firmware upgrade stuck

My router says there is still a firmware upgrade in progress. I have flashed and reflashed (using UI and tftp util) multiple times, and this will not go away.
This is all on top of erratic behavior, dropping the connection, periods of no connectivity, periods of degraded performance, etc.
I've tried a factory reset, and holding the button in for 30 seconds. Nothing will get this perpetual firmware upgrade to go away.

Anytime a firmware upgrade is interrupted (for whatever reason) before it completes, there is a serious risk that your router will die.  However, there is always some hope.   Please try the following:
You need to try again to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Help firmware upgrade for N95-classic

    Hi everyone,
I have been reading some posts on different forums for few days now and I am getting confused little bit.
My first consern is do I need to format my N95 phone memory to be able to perform clean installation of firmware.
My Nokia N95 has very old firmware v12.0.013 19-06-07 RM-159 Nokia N95 (66.01) and it freezes from time to time which means that I cannot do anything for certain amount of time and I can see Nokia logo on my display. It starts to work after but I tired of waiting for this phone to unfreeze. There is one more problem which I have. I have Garmin mobile XT installed while ago and I am unable to uninstall it. I comes up with error message "Removing Failed" I do not want to drag all this problems back to new firmware. I am IT support so as far as I know the save way of rebuilding for any operating system is to format a drive before you do it. I do not like upgrades which may keep prevous faults.
I have found all necessary guids for update but I am not sure should I somehow clearup everything from its memory and then perform clean firmware installation via NSU.
Then I am going to use new NSU to install a new fresh firmware.
In case that my phone stop to work I can use 3,*,call (green icon) and hold it. Then turn phone on and release 3 buttons when I get prompt for security code which is 12345 (as I didn't change it).
Can you guys tell me did I miss anything.
Do I need to whipe out old firmware before new one is installed? If I do please advise how? I just wanted to add that I have made backup using Nokia PC suit already.
Also if there is something what I didn't say in here please advise am I going to install firmware right?
    P.S.
Sorry for my english it is not my native language.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi CuriousDragon
Firstly to utilize Nokia Software Updater your N95 should always be in "PC Suite" mode, which is the default mode setting as screenshot below.
You haven't yet mentioned what version of Windows you are using on your PC, but I may be wrong here.
It might be an idea to try out the Beta version of Software Updater available in Nokia Beta Labs here as said to handle USB connections more adroitly: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-software-updater
If your N95 is not behaving as expected I still wonder whether you should reset by carrying out *#7370# followed by device lockcode on request prior to update procedure to restore device to "out of the box" condition.

  • Firmware upgrade crippled cp1025nw

LaserJet CP1025nw color: was working flawlessly
received email from HP 4/3/2012, recommending firmware upgrade to v 20120130.
ran upgrade 4/3/2012 from iMac, OS10.6.8.
    got error: 'update failed'
print queue says 'printing', cp1025nw doesn't respond.
printer lights:  orange triangle enclosed exclamation mark plus green semicircle
This means: fatal error, per the user manual.
manual instructs to turn off, unplug, plug-in, turn on.  I did this several times.
printer lights still indicate: fatal error.
HP utility says: device status: unknown, service ID: unknown, FW version: unknown, driver version 2.0.20110727

    What should I try next?

Since my last post I’ve retried the same troubleshooting described before, this time just from the PC.  The result is still the same.  Lights on the cp1025nw indicate “fatal error”.
Does anyone know how to put this printer into ‘bootcode’ mode?  I’ve read about this in some other posts about HP firmware updates trashing printers.

  • Performance issues since upgrade

I am on a late 2011 MacBook Pro and am having severs performance issues since upgrading to Mavericks. I fear my issues may be related to company installed anti-virus (which I cannot remove), but I was hoping someone could look over my EtreCheck for other potential solutions.
One really odd issue I am having, which I cannot seem to find good information for on Google, is at least 4-5 times a day my Mac just stops. No beach ball, no anything, for about 1-5 minutes. Then it's fine. Maybe just me grasping at straws, but it seems related to a when webpage loads a bunch of images? I always use Safari btw, but testing other browsers, like Chrome & Firefox, it happens as well.
I have also removed TotalFinder and have noticed no improvement and still have the above issue.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Sky Router firmware upgraded - can no longer login with credentials

I usually have no problems accessing my sky router (white Sky Hub with ADSL) via the page 192.168.0.1 however I tried to login the other day and was greeted with an updated looking summary screen - all very nice I thought, let's go and explore! However when I put in the usual details - username: admin, password: sky I get prompted to input my details again which is very odd. Now I know that I am the only one who accesses the router in this way as my flatmate has never logged in and probably never will so I can only assume the firmware upgrade has caused the password/username to change. I logged in the other week and the password is saved in my browser so I am sure I am not making any mistake here. I have tried in chrome and IE just in case but I have the same issue in both. Has the new firmware brought a new default password? I cannot find any reference to this anywhere on this site so it seems unlikely. I would rather not reset my router to default settings as I have devices with static IP addresses and port forwarding setup that will take me some time to reconfigure. I don't think there is any feature to backup the config unless you are actually logged in to the router but would love to be worng about this. I am guessing I will have to bite the bullet and reset to factory defaults but would welcome any help or suggestions if possible?

After review the events of the morning.....
I normally keep my routers in the basement where my eth jacks all hub.  High on a shelf, I got reasonable coverage on 2.4Ghz even on the second floor.  I went to this router for the Dual mode, but found the 5Ghz didn't make it sufficiently well to the second floor.  So it was moved to the first floor, on a counter.  That morning the router started acting up a bit, not bringing an iphone online.  It was looked at - and a couple of post cards that had been placed on top, removed.  Air flow was not blocked around the sides in any way - just a few pieces of card stock on top to interfere with convection off the top.
    1.  There is no way to look at temperature - maybe the device doesn't even know its own temp.
    2.  There is no fan that I can discern.  Clearly, creating a device that is designed to sit on a flat surface in a home environment ought to take into consideration "normal impediments to air flow".   Temp controlled fans is simple, well proven tech.
    3.  This design is small, has TWO radios, sits horizonal (thus is going to have lousy convection) - seems to me an engineer ought to have given more thought to not only providing the user with easy to obtain data (temp), alternative methods (fan/vertical mounting) and/or self-protection (to hot, I'm shutting down rather than corrupt my database).
Having spent millions on Cisco gear in my career, I would have hoped that Cisco+Linksys would have a little more Cisco and a little less Linksys.

  • Firmware upgrade, then lost

    Hi,
Quickly following automatic firmware upgrade on 1 week old Time capsule, network is now lost. Airport set up utility can't find Time Machine .. others experience the same problem? TM feels hot .. perhaps overheated due to firmware upgrade. Solutions welcome.

Your computer came with OS 9.0.4 installed. OS9.1 is required for Classic so is handy to have, and apparently your firmware installer requires 9.2.1 You can use free updaters to update to any later OS9 version from any earlier one.
I don't see any option but to obtain a used copy of OS9. Make sure you get the gold full retail version rather than a machine specific version since the latter will only work in those computers for which they were designed. You can get away with a machine specific version as long as it exactly corresponds to the model and build of yours, but that is often hard to confirm until too late in the purchase.
Note that any drive you want to use with OS9 either for purposes of installing OS9 or for running software will have to have OS9 drivers present on it. These are installed when you format a drive and cannot be installed later without reformatting the drive (and losing everything on it). If your computer still has its original drive then those will likely still be on there unless you reformatted the drive with OSX and did not select the keep OS9 drivers option (there's no harm in doing so and it saves a lot of trouble for doing exactly what you are trying to do). You can can have a drive present that doesn't have the drivers but it simply won't be seen by OS9.
Disconnect all third party hardware (including PCI cards) when updating the firmware.
