Cannot play movies.

I have chosen from the preferences to play all the extensions, however when I open the file nothing happens. Sometimes ask me to down load components. I have downloaded few but still the same.
I understand that there might be some codecs needed. Any suggestions? Also note that I am new mac user. Thank you.

You may need to tweak a few things:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 and OS 10.4.11.
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack

In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).

In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them).
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.

I have an iPad 2 16GB with iOS 7.0.3 and Netflix version 5.0.2. I cannot watch netflix on an External LCD monitor that I have through VGA out. I use bluetooth speakers, so the AirPlay is going to that for Audio. Before this update, this combo worked without an issue.
So as of Friday Nov. 8/2013, I contacted Netflix support, and they said they fixed the problem on their end, and the fix is on the Apple side of things, and to contact Apple support.
So, I contacted Apple support, and the first person I spoke to said I would have to agree to pay a $35 fee for 30 days of support to this problem since my unit is out of warranty. I said this isn't a hardware issue, it's a software issue, and I'm not willing to pay to fix a problem you created. So I got a Senior Level advisor on the line, and she was helpful, and she's looking into the issue for me and said she'll contact me sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday (Nov. 12 or 13) to let me know of the issue.
Here's the thing: this is a combination of Netflix and iOS not working correctly with any of the Apple Authorized Dongles. This is truly a code error that some hot shot programmer had major oversight on, and their management didn't catch it either. There was no reason for Netflix to rush to get this Netflix update going until Apple sorted out the bugs in iOS 7.
Anyway, if I hear anything from Donna (the advisor), I'll post it and let you guys know. In the mean time, good luck!

Well, if it used to work... and then you updated your iphone and now it does not work... that seems to ME like the iphone update changed something in the files

Upgrade to 10.8 cannot play movies and no movies in Photo Booth

I have been upgrading my iMac and now i cannot play .mov and there are no movies in photo booth.
Is there something I need to do to get this back?

In the iTunes preferences have you tried the option under the Advanced tab to Change the location of your iTunes Media Folder location?

So on your external drive is all of your media in a folder called itunes or is it just music, movies etc. just in a bunch of folders that iTunes is not organizing?

Cannot play movie error message

I am trying to stream off the bbc iplayer via wi-fi onto my ipod touch.
It keeps coming up with the error message 'Cannot Play Movie'.

That means that the dock is not HDCP complient..

It's nothing more than a security feature requiring compatibility between the sender and receiver, like HD cable set-top box and the TV. By compatibility, I mean HDCP technology built into both devices.
Think of HDCP as a security license key like you would input when installing a computer program. Only this security key is invisible to you and me but not your TV.

Error - "Cannot play movie: Movie could not be played"

Hi all,
I'm trying to stream an MP4 video on my iPhone 4 (OS 4.2.1), which I could do with no problems before. For some reason I am now getting the error "Cannot play movie: Movie could not be played". I have tested this URL on a PC web browser and it streams fine. I have tried over the 3G network and wiki... same result.
Has anyone experienced this and / or has a resolution?

Yesterday I had Apple phone support, they could partly solve the problem. At least I can use my Mac again to view movies but the problem of less resolution in itunes only is still there. My brother has the same macbook, same yosemity and same itunes. It works. Obviously it has to do with other SW on the Mac. Yesterday we removed Displaylink SW (i believe that was the name of the SW?) from my Mac. Perhaps it is not yet compatible with yosemity?

Getting "Cannot Play Movie" for what appears to be a good video file

When I load a video by url from an email or in Safari, I get the message "Cannot Play Movie". However, I've written a simple app which just instantiates the MPMoviePlayerController and calls play() and it works flawlessly for the same video loaded from the same url.
I get the same issue regardless of where the video is hosted, i.e. if I load the same video from a different url on a different server.
QuickTime reports:
H.264, 480 x 270, Millions
AAC, Stereo (L R), 44.100 kHz
480 x 270 pixels

Also, this only became a problem after the 3.0 update.

i would just like to point out that when i record a video on my new imac using ibooth it obviously saves it as a quicktime file.
however when emailing this to my iphone it presents the file for download. when the file is downloaded it displays the following error - movie format not supported when it opens quicktime.
does the iphone require an upgrade of quicktime software?
seems pretty pointless that it doesnt work even thought it is another mac product??!!

There is no resolution needed, as this is not a problem.

If the movie is rented, it can only reside on one device at a time. But from your error message above, I don't think that is your situation.
Your error message suggests a different Apple ID purchased the movie. If you want to see it, you must use your computer's iTunes, go to Store > Authorize This Account in the iTunes menu on your computer, and have that purchaser sign in with their Apple ID and password, then sync your iPad to that computer.

Cannot play movie HDCO, any solution?

I get this message, cannot play the movie because the computer screen does not support the format:
HDCP (High-bandwith Digital content Protection). I rented the movie from itunes, and I am very surprized, I thought that's the reason why I have a mac, that all apple- features correspond! I have a mac book pro from 2011.

FWIW, I talked with Applet Support. The CSR was not aware of the issue and had to consult with a more senior person. Story is the rights management varies by video. The CSR agreed that there is a inconsistency in how Apple is applying HDCP rights between the iTunes application and iPad Video app but can't do anything about it.
So now looking to see if Android is a better choice going forward.

I am not able to play .mov files in my JFrame Window....
The Visual Content shows onli a pink screen and following exception...
The mov file which i tried to play is a standard file and plays well with quicktime player... Its not working with my code alone... I ve posted my code also... Can anyone look at this issue and guide me????

When I 1st used QT after upgrading to ML, I received a message saying that a codec was missing, and that accordingly QT could not play the files. Just now, after tinkering with VSL in vain, I re-launched QT, and opened what had been a '.mov'-file, only to find that it is now an '.mpg'-file. How that transformation occurred, I do not know, but the result is that QTwill play the file perfectly well.
I am back with QT, and many thanks to you all that have tried to help.

As Linc said, download VLC media player. Quicktime has limited codecs and would require a plugin to play .mov files, but I personally prefer VLC over any plugin available.

CD Cannot play movie

I have created a menu utilizing the Menu Builder and it runs
fine on the development workstation (the pc I used to create the
movies). I copied all files to the CD and the CD runs fine on the
development workstation. However, when I take the CD to another
workstation, the menu builder menu displays, I select the first
movie and the first movie plays fine. When the first movie is done,
I want the second movie to play. But when the second movie attempts
to play, I get a message that it cannot find the movie. The
messages states "Cannot find file://C:\Documents &
Settings\shawkins\Desktop\Folder Name\movie.htm. Make sure the path
or Internet address is correct".
What options do I need to be aware of? What do I need to do?
I have checked the button about saving the movies with the file.
What else do I need to do?

MenuBuilder can be a bit ornery that way. Sounds like you
have managed to create
absolute paths. Quite common with this product. So here is
how you go about fixing it.
While you are creating your link, you need to do two things.
1. Make sure you place a check mark in the check box labeled
"Save file with project".
2. When you see the path information in the Link field, make
sure it only lists the file you are linking to, not anything else.
It's not uncommon to see it have the fully qualified path to your
file in there. If it does, edit it out so ONLY the file name is
there.
Make these changes, Re-publish and test!
