Cannot Play Older Purchased Songs in iTunes

I am having a real problem with some songs that I purchased from iTunes a while ago. Recently my computer was having some problems. The screen would not turn on but the computer would work normally. I brought in my computer (a 2008 15 inch MacBook Pro) to the Genius guys and they fixed it by putting in a new motherboard and a new screen. Ever since then I have been having problems with certain songs on my iTunes. Between the years of 2004 and 2007 I purchased a total of about 70 songs on iTunes but with an older 2004 MacBook Pro. For the last month since my computer was fixed those songs no longer are able to be played on my computer but they still show up in my iTunes playlist. They have since though been deleted off of my ipod. iTunes is saying that those songs need to be authorized in order to play them so i deauthorized my computer and then waited a few minutes and reauthorized the same computer and the error message was still being displayed. The rest of my iTunes playlist including songs I have purchased in the last year are able to be played. I would like to be able to play all songs in my library. Is there anything I can do to fix the situation?

I am a new MAC user and just converted my iTunes over. I do have some songs that were purchased on my PC but I have moved often so my user name was changed based on email addresses. How can I gain access to those older boughten songs. I have about 100 and of course they are my favorite. Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Is the "software update" for iTunes 12?  Or something you did to the iPod?

  • Cant seem to authorize my computer to play a purchased song from itunes.

I purchased a song from itunes today and after it downloaded I was unable play it after being told my computer was not authorized to play the song. After going through the steps to "authorize the computer" I was told it is already authorized. Thinking I was then going to be able to play the song, I was once again being told that my comuter was not authorized. Can't figure out why or how to fix this problem. Help?!

I read in another thread that there was some bug with authorizations. An apparent solution is to try and download the free Single of the Week and play it. It's worth trying:

  • Cannot play previously purchased songs

I have a handful of songs that I previously purchased that can no longer be played. When I try to play them, it asks me to authorize the computer but it is already authorized.  I even unauthorized the computer and authorized it again.  Other purchased songs work and I know my account is OK.
When I view the Summary on Get Info, I noticed that these songs do not show a Purchased Date as others do.  They do show Purchased by and my Apple id.
Ideas??  Is this a version issue or something that can be resolved?

    Hello beeangie,
It sounds like you have multiple Apple ID’s associated. Once the 90 days are up, you are able to associate the Apple ID with your iPhone. Another option is to restore your iPhone and setup as new. The article below will explain further about assocating Apple ID's to devices.

Mostly because you are not using any capital letters or paragraph returns and your post is difficult to read.

  • HT1933 My new computer has been authorized, but I can't play any of my purchased songs in itunes.  What do I do to play, I get an error message that original files cannot be found.

My new HP ENVY 23 TOUCHSMART PC has been authorized for itunes, but I can't play any of my purchased itunes songs.  When I try to play a purchased song in my itunes library, I get an error message prompt stating that the song could not be used because the original file could not be found.  When I check for available downloads it states that all downloads have been made.  Ironically, all my movie purchases play fine, but the songs do not play.  What do I have to do to play my purchased songs?

The 'unable to locate' message means that you don't have those music files on that computer, or that they are not where iTunes is expecting them to be. How did you get the entries for those tracks in your new computer's iTunes ?
If you still have your old computer then you can try copying them over again : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
You may also be able to re-download them from the store (checking for available downloads only checks for items that have not yet been downloaded, not for past purchases) via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (re-downloading music isn't possible in all countries). You may need to delete them form your library first (where you are getting the 'unable to locate' message), otherwise iTunes will assume that you still have them somewhere and won't let you re-download them.

My play lists and songs on iTunes and on my iPhone won't play.  They are light grey instead of black and nothing happens when I click on the songs.  All of the songs were either from CD's or from iTunes that I purchased. I have home sharing turned on. This is a new issue.  It used to work fine.  I tried restarting my iPhone and syncing with iTunes. Neither worked.  Please help!

Try delete those songs using iTunes by de-selecting and sync. After that mark those songs and sync again.

  • Purchase song on iTunes from 5c phone but can't play song on phone or mac

Purchased song on ITunes and entered correct apple id.  song downloaded to iPhone 5C.  Phone then synced with MacPro laptop on OS Mavericks latest version.  This song will not play on phone or laptop.  Get Info shows correct Apple ID.  Whenever I try to play this song, get message this song is not authorized for this computer.  I sign same Apple ID with correct password and get message Computer already authorized.  When I click to play on same song again, get same message this song is not authorized for this computer.  Song will not play on phone either.  Just skips to next available song to play.

What is the exact text of the error dialog?
If I understand you correctly you are saying that you and your wife both use the same MacMini with seperate User Accounts. You each have your own iTunes Store Apple IDs. This could be a problem. One computer can only be associated with an Apple ID once every 90 days. This applies to using iTunes Match, automatic downloads and downloading past purchases. See this Apple KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Since you apparently had the MacMini associated to your Apple ID for iTunes Match, if your wife attempted to re-download anything from her purchase history she would have been prompted to associate the computer with her Apple ID, which it sounds like she did. At this time you must wait the 90 days before you may re-associate the MacMini with your Apple ID.

My macbook pro is already authorized, but a purchased song from iTunes keeps stating that my computer is not authorized to play it. I enter my apple ID and password, upon which a window confirms that my computer is already authorized. Yet the song still won't play and continues to state that my computer is not authorized.

If you live in a country in which you are allowed to re-download purchased music delete the track from the library and the HDD and re-download it.

I cannot find a way to authorize my new computer to play previously purchased music from itunes.  The directions say to click on STORE menu, but I don't see that option.

Go to the Store menu item on the menu bar, and choose Authorize This Computer, as shown below.
If by any chance you don't see the menu bar (File, Edit, View, Controls, Store, Help), first enable it by using CTRL+B.

  • Cannot listen or purchase songs under new layout of iTunes 9.0

Under the new layout I cannot listen or purchase songs. Also the homepage is basically just blank with only the right column with top songs, albums showing. The bizarre thing is that all comes out fine with the pages that have kept the old layout such as iTunesU or some iMix (was even able to download a song). Any help to fix this? Thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem and saw this in a previous thread -
    1. restored system to yesterday (before I'd attempted the whole update fiasco)
    2. backup itunes library
    3. used revo uninstaller for a complete uninstall
    4. restart
    5. run clean install off new installer download (even though logged in as admin, I also used the right click "run as Admin" option for good measure)
    And voila upgrade
Yes, it's a pain, but it did work. My best guess is that something was corrupted during the first failed update attempt, which resulted in an incomplete uninstall, thus screwing up the clean install. But that's just speculation...
I want to do this with mine but don’t know how to “restore system to yesterday”? let me know if you find out how?

  • I purchased songs on itunes at various times and I am unable to play some of them that display an upside i??

I purchased songs on Itunes at various times and months and I am unable to play some of them. The display says unable to locate file and has a upside down "i."  Can anyone help?

    Hi 11201019,
It sounds like you have a question about the exclamation point (!) next to some of your songs in iTunes. Here is an article that can explain what this means:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Symbols used in iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12306
    Exclamation point
Next to a song: The song can’t be located; it may have been moved or deleted.
Next to a podcast: Recent episodes haven’t been downloaded because you have multiple unplayed episodes.
You will want to use the following article to help you address this issue with missing songs:
iTunes: Finding lost media and downloads
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1408
Since you mentioned that these are purchased items, you may also want to try re-downloading said purchases:
    Download past purchases
