Cannot play "protected movie" on display, but I purchased it through iTunes

Why can't I play movies that I legally purchased in iTunes on any display I like?  With these restrictions why should I buy any more movies from iTunes?  I get the message that I cannot play movies and TV Shows that I purchased on an "unauthorized display".  However, movies that I own the DVD for, I can translate and play on the same display.
Question:  Am I missing anything, such that I should be able to play these purchased movies or shows on any displays (or how do displays become "authorized")?  Or am I simply SOL for any content I buy from iTunes?  Hence, no reason to do this in the future.

I suggest reading through this support article to understand your usage rights. This is not done arbitrarily by Apple, the requirements are in place because of demands of the copyright holders:

  • HT4437 Cannot play protected movies on AirPlay from iPad

I cannot play a movie from my iPad to my Apple TV device. I get an error "cannot play protected movies". Why is this when I bought the digital copy with the Blu-ray Disc ?

I'm not aware of any third-party receiver that supports video over AirPlay, so you'll probably need an Apple TV. But then, as long as you have a WiFi network in your house, you should be able to play the movie through the Apple TV to your projector without needing Internet as long as the movie has completely downloaded. For more information on AirPlay see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4437
In some cases, though, people have reported that even with the rental completely downloaded (or so they said) it still asked to connect to the iTunes Store, so it's not 100% reliable, it seems.
    Regards.

I had exact same problem and I have found a way to get round out!!!! Easy!
So the reason it doesn't allow it to play is for security to stop piracy etc.
Plug in the cable and VGA and aux cable and get everything set up so you are looking at the home screen.
    1) select Videos
    2) selected the film you want to watch
    3) click the little play button
    4) it will then come up with the message saying it can't play protected films blah blah blah
    5) WITHOUT clicking ok double tap the home button to bring up the multitasking bar and swipe left to reveal the control panel
    6) hold fast forward for a second or two and the movie with continue to play!
Stay in the multi tasking bar with the control panel, The message will stay there but don't worry. Kick back and enjoy your iPad movie on the big screen:)
I'm sure your saying thanks:) it was my pleasure realising I've outsmarted apples little security protection thing lol

There is no resolution needed, as this is not a problem.
I am saying not the device, but the Apple ID is what needs to be the same, unless the movie is rented.
If the movie is rented, it can only reside on one device at a time.  But from your error message above, I don't think that is your situation.
Your error message suggests a different Apple ID purchased the movie.  If you want to see it, you must use your computer's iTunes, go to Store > Authorize This Account in the iTunes menu on your computer, and have that purchaser sign in with their Apple ID and password, then sync your iPad to that computer.

  • IPad 2 to Apple TV: Cannot Play Movie - The Connected Device is not authorized to play protected movies.

I am getting the 'Connected Device is not authorized to play protected movies' message.
    Here is my setup:
From the iPad 2 I used iTunes to Rent a movie - Safe House in SD.
I then used Airplay Mirroring to send the movie to my Apple TV.
The Apple TV is connected to a Vizio V0370M HDTV.
According to Vizio all of the HDMI ports have HDCP.
When the movie starts I get this error message on the iPad.
I have used this approach in the past with success.
I rented a couple of episodes of HBO's True Blood and they played just fine on the Vizio through Apple TV.
I believe some were in HD and some SD.
Using the iPad with Airplay Mirroring is a very nice way to send content to the HDTV.
I was hoping I'd be able to do this for anything that is on the iPad.
Is there something wrong with my configuration? Or what I'm trying to do?
Thanks for any help or advice!

All of sudden apple tv will not play my tv shows/movies on itunes.  It says "The connected display is not authorized to play protected movies.
Can anyone help  I have just bought alot of movies and tv shows and want to watch them with my family not just on my ipad!!!
Not sure why this has just started happening.  have been using apple tv with my ipad for months and now it comes up with this error...
    THanks

Firstly restart the AppleTV, secondly check the HDMI lead and if possible swap for another or another HDMI input - sounds as though AppleTV thinks the TV is not HDCP capable.

  • Not authorized to play protected movies

So I have a APPLE 30" CINEMA display and a late 2008 MacBook Pro. NO third party equipment. I download a HD movie from APPLE iTunes. I get this message:
"This movie cannot be played because a display that is not authorized to play protected movies is connected."
Apple, you are pathetic and your HD content is BS.

It may not be of much help or consolation but you can read about the HDCP issue at this link: iLounge - iTunes Store HD Movies Don’t Play on My Monitor: Solutions
Quote "If you’re using a relatively new Mac, specifically one with a Mini DisplayPort connector, and trying to play iTunes Store HD movies through any external monitor other than Apple’s recently-released 24" LED Cinema Display, you’re most likely out of luck. Click on the video and iTunes will give you an error message: “This movie cannot be played because a display that is not authorized to play protected movies is connected. Try disconnecting any displays that are not HDCP authorized.”........
The reasons for this error message are simple: Apple has started to support HDCP, “high-bandwidth digital content protection,” an Intel-developed way to stop high-definition videos from being played on older, less secure receiving devices."

  • "Cannot play video - The Connected display is not supported" error message using Netflix 5.0.2 on my iPad

I'm running iOS 7.0.3 on my iPhone 4S and iPad (3rd gen) and have just upgraded to the current version of the Neflix app available in the Canadian App Store (5.0.2).
Although all other apps I've tried (e.g. Podcast, VLC) are able to properly output video & audio directly to my TV using the HDMI adapter (i.e. NOT via an Apple TV), the Netflix app pops up the error message "Cannot play video - The connected display is not supported".  If I start a video and then plug the HDMI cable in, it will play for a few seconds and then halt with the same error message.
Netflix & Apple were supposed to have been working together to fix the previous issue with this scenario which was causing audio to be output but no video.  The current Netflix app update was released yesterday and seems to have taken a step backward.
When I contacted Netflix support, they indicated that they have done whatever can be done from their side and this is now Apple's issue.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Kiron

    Hello all,
I have an iPad 2 16GB with iOS 7.0.3 and Netflix version 5.0.2. I cannot watch netflix on an External LCD monitor that I have through VGA out. I use bluetooth speakers, so the AirPlay is going to that for Audio. Before this update, this combo worked without an issue.
So as of Friday Nov. 8/2013, I contacted Netflix support, and they said they fixed the problem on their end, and the fix is on the Apple side of things, and to contact Apple support.
So, I contacted Apple support, and the first person I spoke to said I would have to agree to pay a $35 fee for 30 days of support to this problem since my unit is out of warranty. I said this isn't a hardware issue, it's a software issue, and I'm not willing to pay to fix a problem you created. So I got a Senior Level advisor on the line, and she was helpful, and she's looking into the issue for me and said she'll contact me sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday (Nov. 12 or 13) to let me know of the issue.
Here's the thing: this is a combination of Netflix and iOS not working correctly with any of the Apple Authorized Dongles. This is truly a code error that some hot shot programmer had major oversight on, and their management didn't catch it either. There was no reason for Netflix to rush to get this Netflix update going until Apple sorted out the bugs in iOS 7.
Anyway, if I hear anything from Donna (the advisor), I'll post it and let you guys know. In the mean time, good luck!

  • I cannot play a movie I just recently downloaded from the iTunes store

I cannot play a movie I just recently downloaded from the iTunes store

I purchased an album from the iTunes store VIA the wish list Purchase option.
The 2 albums and 3 songs were purchased.    However, one of my songs was stuck in the "Computer is not authorized / Already Authorized" loop.  Where it asks me to authorize a song, but then says the computer is already authorized and doesn't play the song.
I noticed looking at "Get Info" there were two key differences.
The songs that were valid and would play have:
    Kind: Purchased AAC audio file
    Purchased by: **********
    Account Name: *****@gmail.com
The one song that would NOT play and caused the authorization loop has:
    Kind: AAC audio file
Purchased by:   <this field was NOT PRESENT like it was on the other files>
    Account Name: *****@gmail.com
(**** = redacted, however the two Account Name fields were identical)
As you can see, the Account name match, but the "Purchased By" field is missing and the Kind is not marked as "purchased".
THIS IS A BUG.  As the entire album was bought under the same method, same time, and same account, yet, one file is improperly tagged, and does not play.  The trouble file was found in iTunes store, added to Wish list, and purchased in the same session, no other log-off, shutdown, or iTunes restart to cause a selection of anouther account name.
This leads me to believe that iTunes is not properly tagging a file after it is downloaded that it has been purchased, thus, causing the loop.
Apple can't blame anyone else here, as only apple hardware and software were involved in this.  MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.  iTunes 10.7 (21)

I Just tried to play a movie off of my iPhone 6 plus ios 8.1 on my tv using the hdmi adapter, the movie plays for about 2 secs and then tells me the device is not authorized to play protected movies.. I have power rebooted my phone closed everything out and it stil isn't working.. I can do anything else like view web pages and Netflix just not purchased movies from iTunes.. Mr Ram,
There is a group of Quicktime specialists in Apple.com ⇒ Support ⇒ Discussions ⇒ Quicktime .
The more data you give us, the easier it is to help us help you to diagnose your problem. Your disk space would be very useful. Contrary to some, I advocate iDefrag to assist VLC and MPlayer, which you were a little hard on.
    GNU/Linux's free offerings
MPlayer was developed a decade ago, and I prefer it for viewing DVDs (for 'DVD Player') seems too dark. VLC (legally) copies many CRM-protected DVDs of yours, so you can play only the burned copy. When I'm having a problem playing a DVD, the VLC log tells me all: only perfect DVDs play well on VLC.
There are two ways of viewing everything.
    Streaming MPEG-4
+H.264/MPEG-4 AVC+ is a fancy codec based upon MPEG-4: it requires a powerful processor to de-compress it. I watched an MPEG-4 movie from a G3 iBook in 2005. It played flawlessly.
    Your Problem
Quicktime 7.X applications can not play +H.264/MPEG-4 AVC+ streams. It was a bug Apple never fixed. Frames are dropped because H.264 is so slow that it requires special hardware. You, I'm sad to say, don't have it.
To quote the Wikipedia on Quicktime: 'QuickTime 7 lacks support for H.264's Sample Aspect Ratio .[67] QuickTime X does not have this limitation; many Apple products (such as iTunes and Apple TV) still use the older QuickTime 7 engine.'
My Quicktime Pro on a PPC PowerBook is 7.6.4. You can either use a Linux transplant or upgrade to Quicktime X. Those more familiar with Macs may have better ideas for you.
    My best,
    Bruce

  • Cannot play netflicks movies with firefox 4.0.1 on Mac OS X

I update the silverlight plugin and I still cannot play any movies.
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X 10.6.7
    Browser: Firefox 4.0.1
Silverlight version: 4.0.60310.0, last update is March 10, 2011
This use to work in previous versions prior to FF 4.0.

n Firefox make sure you have at least two (2) tabs open - (Ctrl+T opens a new tab)
In the address bar of one tab, type "about:config" - minus the quotes, of course
You'll see a warning. Click "I'll be careful, I promise" and continue to the configuration page.
There's a search bar at the top. Type "js" - again, minus the quotes.
In the results you'll see pdfjsviewer.disabled with a vaule of false. Click it once, then right click it and choose Toggle to make the value "True".
    Close that tab.
Click Tools>Options and go to the Applications tab
Locate Adobe Acrobat Document (or Portable Document File (PDF)) in the list and click the drop-down to select "Use Adobe Reader (in Firefox)". (Mine doesn't have that because I also have Acrobat Pro installed)
    Click OK.
Click Tools>Addons to see that the Acrobat plugin is installed
Close and restart Firefox. PDFs should now open in a browser window with the Reader plugin.
Note: This doesn't work for me since the update to 23 and I should have the choice of Reader or Acrobat plugins. Firefox is trying desperatelt to FORCE users to use their crappy PDFJSViewer, which doesn't handle multimedis or forms PDFs.
As to the NPAPI and security risks, that's blown WAY out of proprotion. There are antivirus companies trying to sell their products to Mac users (who will NEVER need them) and they use this "urban legend" to bolster their case.

  • Safari cannot play a movie from Apple's site

    Hi All,
I was actually quite a bit surpriesed that Safari cannot play a movie from the Apple's web-site itself...! It is nothing special - just the 4S TV add with Santa Clause. The same link is working fine with Chrome.
Any ideas? I guess it is some sort of Preferences settings?
    Merry Christmas!
    Bojidar

Might be a Safari extension preventing the video from loading.
Go to your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab.
If youi have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari to test.

As far as the *.avi files are concerned you could download an open source app called VideoLAN: VLC. You will find that it can handle just about every audio and video format available.
