Cannot play songs in iTunes

I have songs on my iPhone. I hook it up to my work computer and open iTunes. All the songs are grayed out and I cannot play them, even though my work computer is one of my authorized computers. I use my home computer to sync things up. Why can I not simply play music on my phone through iTunes no matter what computer I'm on??

hard drives will always crash, and you should ALWAYS keep a backup. it's surprising how many people still don't know this little fact about computers, and then they do nothing by cry when all of their data is gone.
let this be a lesson from here on out - ALWAYS KEEP A BACKUP OF YOUR DATA. the easiest way is to use an external hard drive.
there are apps that will allow you to get your music off of the iPhone, but they are not supported by apple.
and just because you think it's stupid does not mean it is done to annoy you. it was most likely done as an agreement with the music industry, but since no one here officially works at apple, we don't know the actual reasons.

  • Cannot play songs on Itunes from mini

My Itunes recognizes my ipod mini, but all the songs are inaccessible - they are all in light gray and I cannot play any of them or change any of my playlists on my ipod.
yet, in my music library there all there. and accessible what's going on? I've tried restoring my ipod but it didn't work.

That is because you have the iPod set to Automatically Update songs. If you set the iPod to Manually Update, the songs will not be grayed out, and you will be able to move them around, etc.
I hope this helps! Post back if you need more info!

  • Help, I cannot play songs in itunes since I upgraded to itunes 9

I updated my itunes two months ago and since then, I have played my songs in itunes. The bar is not moving at all. The videos are playing but without sounds. I tried playing the songs in Windows media player and it does not play either. But the songs play in the real player. What should I do? Even the songs I bought recently from itunes are not playing.. Please help me. I miss listening to my songs..

I'm having the same trouble and could use some help. No sound, but it is playing. How can I fix this to playback on iTunes 9? My Windows Media plays okay.

  • Cannot play songs in iTunes and others

Back story: somehow deleted my entire storage drive (I have 2 drives on my system). Luckily I downloaded everything to my external drive the day before. After getting everything back over to my storage drive and adding the folder to iTunes, I get the exclamation point. So I locate the song and iTunes will not play it at all. This is random, sometimes 1 song will locate just fine, and the next song not at all. Not all songs on an album are affected. Deleting the exclamation song does no good, because the drag and drop feature does not work. I even tried adding the file through the edit menu, no go.
    Am I missing something?
Also, iTunes is adding folders to my storage drive, even though the song is already in a different folder (I like them by album name, esp ones that are compilations/soundtracks). So iTunes is adding the folders with the performers name.
And, even though I only have 1 copy of the song in my music folder, iTunes is showing up to 4 copies. What is all that about?
    Anyone have solutions?
Am running Windows 7 and iTunes 12.
    Thanks!

songs on itunes have a "!" next to them saying the original file cannot be found

    Hi Peetintexas,
When tracks in iTunes display a it means the file cannot be located; it may have been moved or deleted. For this issue, we will need to refer to the following article:

I had to reinstall Windows on my computer, after that was done I redownloaded iTunes and then connected my iPod.  The songs show up on iTunes and I can edit them etc, but if I try to play them it states files cannot be located.  How do I get the files back on my computer?

I'm not very good with computers, so please give me the computer's for dummies answer LOL

  • Cannot play songs within iTunes

When I double-click a song (in the iTunes library), the sound icon appears, album cover (if applicable) appears, and song title and info appear in the tan box at the top of the screen. However, music does not play, and the marker does not move.
    i.e.
    | This is the song that ... |

    (This being the box)
The volume is turned up and I am using speakers. Headphones (pulgged into the computer) do not work, either. However, the songs play on the iPod. What can I do to listen to them on the computer? It has worked before!!!

I had no problem within iTunes, but could not play or import CDs. The only solution I've found is to reinstall an older version...read the thread at:

  • Cannot play songs in iTunes Match

Some of the songs in my iTunes Match Library show up on my computer (MacBook Pro running latest OS) as greyed out and they do not play - although they are already in my library and they play on my other devices (so I know they're good).  I can see info (but not lyrics or artwork).  I did notice that these seem to have no sampling rate (compared to the songs that function normally).

  • Cannot play song in iTunes – told I'm not authorized but I am

I'm on a Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody Macbook
    Using iTunes 12.1.0.50
When I try to play a certain song, which I happen to have purchased on an old iPhone, or a certain album that I got through Family Sharing with my husband, I am prompted to authorize the device:
I enter my details and then I get this:
But no luck, the songs won't play. I get the first prompt again:
Note that this only happens with two songs purchased on my old iPhone (by Jamie Woon), but not any others, and one album (Yellow House by Grizzly Bear) obtained through Family Sharing.
    Please help

Delete and redownload them if doing so is free in your country.

  • Cannot Play Songs Downloaded iTunes songs

I have three songs from different albums, all the first song on the album, which were bought from iTunes unable to play in iTunes or transferred to my iPod. I get a message that says there is problem with the format. All the rest of the songs on the album play without trouble, and all three songs used to be able to be played and transferred. I'm working on a Mac iBook G4, with the all the updates.

Try posting in the iTunes for Mac forum. You'll be more likely to get help there than you will here in the iTunes for Windows forum.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot play songs/videos I purchased in iTunes store

All of a sudden I cannot play songs from the iTunes Store anymore. I buy it, download it, it appears in the list but it won´t play. Trying to convert to AAC gives me error code -208.
I have 4 out of five computers activated.
When I click on a song, it´s title and duration appears on top of the iTunes window but nothing happens then. When I buy a song on my other Mac and move it to my first one it plays with QuickTime. Once imported to iTunes it does not play anymore.
I reinstalled iTunes again - no difference.
All the movies I had within iTunes before and which are still in the folder iTunesMusic/Movies don´t play anymore. They just do nothing. I cannot re-import them into iTunes. Open with iTunes just shows no reaction at all.
Same with some of the songs that played perfectly well before.
Movies create a error message about an invalid public atom and do not play with e.g. Quick Time.
    Any idea?

    Hello Wade,
This is typically indicative of an issue with the installation of QuickTime on your computer. The following article provides steps for reinstalling QuickTime to resolve the issue.
"iTunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration"
    Resolution
QuickTime may need to be reinstalled. Follow the steps below to uninstall QuickTime and then download and install QuickTime using the QuickTime standalone Installer.
On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
Follow the steps appropriate for your Windows operating system below.
Windows XP and Windows 2000: Open the Add or Remove Programs control panel and selectQuickTime in the list of currently installed programs.
Windows Vista and Windows 7: Click Uninstall a program (or if using Windows Vista's Classic View of the Control Panel, click Programs and Features) and select QuickTime in the list of currently installed programs.
Click the Remove button (or Uninstall for Windows Vista and Windows 7) and follow the prompts to remove QuickTime from your computer.
Download QuickTime. Note: There are two options for downloading QuickTime, be sure to select the option that does not include iTunes.
    During the download:
If you choose to run the installer, proceed to the next step.
If you choose to save the download, double click the QuickTimeInstaller file, then proceed to next step.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install QuickTime.
    Reopen iTunes.

  • I cannot see the details of the playing song on iTunes Radio.

I cannot see the details of the playing song on iTunes Radio on my iOS Devices. On pc and mac it's fine but on all my iOS devices, the album artwork, title and artist info is missing; however, the song plays. I can see the songs i played on my iPad when i open up iTunes on my pc. I restarted the device, logged out and in several times with my apple id, nothing changes.

Hi, I have this problem too. I've uploaded photos of my granddaughter to iCloud Drive on my 5 year old PC and can see the content on my PC at iCloud .com - though the system does not allow me to see minimised photos, just lots of numbered, blue rectangle icons. I spent over 2.5 hours with Apple Support yesterday and they could NOT resolve the issue in any straightforward manner, though did suggest I go through the same time consuming uploading process placing the same photos in the Beta version of 'Photos' available at iCloud.com. What a cumbersome system. Why hasn't Apple offered an iCloud Drive app (free of charge) so that once content has been placed in iCloud Drive it can Bev retrieved on any iOS device, as Apple suggest. Here is what they say at Apple.com (see also the illustrations they offer for iCloud Drive on an iPad - I was informed yesterday, by two advisors, that they couldn't find way to locate the suggested pages either?)
Storing files in iCloud is simple. Just as it should be.
To upload your files to iCloud, simply drag them into the iCloud Drive on your Mac running OS X Yosemite or PC running Windows 7 or later. Or start a new document using an iCloud-enabled app on your iOS device. Then you’ll be able to access those documents from all your devices.
