Cannot play video files in new photos app for mac

Hi There,
I recently moved from an older imac to a new one (both had Yosemite installed). I moved my photos over by copying my old photo library file and pasting it to replace the same file on the new mac. All my photos came over fine, however i am unable to play some of the video files. I get a warning saying 'Cannot Play file - Photos cannot play this video. Do you want to try opening it in Quicktime Player?'. If i try in quicktime it won't open either.
What's strange is that when i go to the info tab for these videos they show as .MOV files that were taken on an iphone 5S - but they are very small in size - 5KB or so. Perhaps the size of the thumbnail image only. Any ideas on how i can fix this? When i open them on the old mac i get an other warning issue stating 'The necessary data reference could not be resolved'
Thanks in advance for any help.
John

At that size, what copied over is just the reference to the video file, not the video itself. Some suggestions:
1. In iPhoto, select the video, then in the File menu select Reveal in Finder. If this finds the original file, add it manually to Photos.
2. Perform a Spotlight search for the video file title/name. If found, move to Photos.
3. If you imported or modified the files in iMovie, launch it and find/export the originals from there.

  • My photo stream folder in new Photos app for Mac

i tried to use and understand the new photos app for mac, and found that my photo stream folder is continuously hide (I didn't set my photos in the app to store to iCloud library), i don't know if this is a bug or something, the only way to fix the problem is to go to preferences and uncheck and recheck the photostream
anyone has the same problem? or how to fix this problem permanently?

  • How do I change a bad location in the new photos app for Mac?

I am not sure why but hundreds of my photos have the wrong location stored for them. Is there any easy way to change them in the new Photos app for mac?
    Thanks

You can't at the present time.  There's no such capability in the current version of Photos.
Tell Apple what additional features you want in Photos via both http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html  since they don't have a feedback page for Photos as yet.

  • What exactly is the difference between the new photos app for mac and iPhoto? i'm very confused...

Ever since i've bought my macbook pro i used iPhoto to organize my photos. Now apple added this new photos app and i don't really understand what is it meant for? can someone please explain me the difference? I'm very confused about the purposes of both apps....

Photos is a completely new designed photo application, designed for Yosemite and the MacOS X versions to come. Many differences are under the hood. It uses the new system libraries and frameworks for more efficient image processing on the new powerful macs, like the mac pro, it is extensible by app extensions, if other developers will add functionality, and most important, it brings integration with iCloud Photo Library. With Photos you can store your photo library in iCloud and sync it across all devices.
Some features are still missing however, and you can continue to use iPhoto, if you like. Or create a small Photos library for testing and explore Photos, while keeping your main libraries in iPhoto.

  • New photo app for mac - all photos lost?

I saw there were updates for my mac at the app store so without looking just did the update.  Took forever and now I find that I photo has gone and I have a new Photos app.  I have been trying to open it and for the last hour it just says "preparing library 1% complete".  It is not progressing and I can't shut it.  Nothing is happening and I am really worried that all my hundreds of very precious photos have disappeared.
Can anyone give me some reassurance on this.

Your photos are likely fine, however are you saying your updated your computer and do not back it up regularly? If so then you photo library is not only likely fine it also has a backup. If you have not been backing up, you should begin doing this regularly. Sooner or later without a backup plan you will lose precious data. Apple has included Time Machine in OS X for about 7 years so there is absolutely no reason to not be backing up.
So take a deep breath, relax and let Photo's do it's thing and then learn how to use the app.
Finally, giving idle threats to Apple serves no value. I have asked the moderator to remove that portion of your post as it is off topic and violates the Terms of Use you agreed to.

  • RAW import from Lumix FZ1000 not working in new Photo app for Mac

I am not able to import from my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 the RAW pictures into the new Photo Mac app. They are even not shown when inserting the SD card into my MBP.
I am only able to get the JPEG ones.
FZ1000 RAW is supported according Apple and was working with previous app.
    Any idea?

I am able to import them, but I cannot edit them as RAW files. They behave like .jpegs. So correcting exposure for example is a horrible experience. My 5D Mark II files behave as they did in Aperture, so it is the FZ1000 RAWs in particular that are problematic.

  • Alternative to new Photos app for Mac?

I just upgraded, or got upgraded, and cannot stand the new Photos and its facial-recognition feature (and mostly, the apparent inability to turn it off). Now when I open Photos, I see my dead parents, my ex and all I want to see is .. not them. I think it's time to move away from Photos. Any decent alternatives? Google searches don't show much that is current. Thanks.

iPhoto is still in your applications folder and your original iPhoto Library is intact.  If you remove the new Photos Library file and then open iPhoto and select the old iPhoto Library, you can just use iPhoto for a while longer.  Maybe Apple will eventually get a clue and fix this mess.

  • New Photos app on Mac: how to add location data?

The recent OSX upgrade migrated my photo library from iPhoto to Photos. On iPhoto i had carefully added location data to all my photos, which is still accessible. But how do I add location data to new downloaded photos? I am talking about from a camera with no GPS facility. I have queried this on the Help menu but it is not clear. Anyone help?

I am talking about from a camera with no GPS facility.
Photos can use GPS data, if the photos have them, but it does not support to add locations to your photos.
I hope, the next update will add this necessary feature.
Send feedback with a feature request:   Apple - Photos - Feedback
For the time being, you have to add GPS coordinates to the photos before importing them to Photos.
You could, for example, first import to iPhoto, add the locations, batch change the titles and captions, do all the things that are not yet supported in the new Photos, then export the photos from iPhoto and import them to Photos.
Or use the free exiftool, if you like the Terminal.

I use Jetphoto Studio, but it is not free.
If you updated iPhpto to version 9.6.1 before the update, you can still use iPhoto.
Just drag it back to the Dock from the Applications folder.
If you not yet have 9.6.1, update as described here:
Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities
The main idea is to move the iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the AppStore, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.

There's a system component that 's missing that Photos is trying to use.  You'll need to boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and reinstall the system.

  • How can i set the location of my pictures in photos app for mac osx?

Not every photo I import into my MacBook have all the metadata in them. iPhoto allowed for setting the location, but in Photos I cannot manage to do so. Is there another way to do it or perhaps it's coming with an update?

Adding location data is not yet supported in Photos.
And we do not know, if future updates will  support this feature. It might help, if you send back feedback to Apple with a feature request. You can use this form:  Apple - Photos - Feedback
As a work-around, use third party apps to add location data before you import the photos to Photos.

  • Cannot play protected files on new MacBook Pro

I recently bought a new MB Pro. I am not able to play protected AAC files on my iTunes. I don't recall having this problem on my previous MBP. All my files are stored on my iMAC, and they play with no problem. They play fine on my iPod also. But again, with my new MBP, when trying to play the songs, I get the "Not Authorized" message. I used the Migration Assistant to transfer all data from my old MBP to the new.
Problem is, these songs were purchased with my wife's OLD iTunes ID. ITunes does not even recognize the email address, (Her ID.) Does anyone have any recommendations on how to get the songs played on my MBP, without having to buy all these songs over on my iTunes ID?
    Tried using Homesharing. No luck.

  • Cannot open existing files on new CC apps

I just purchased a new Mavericks MacBook Pro and installed Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere from Creative Cloud and am unable to open any pre-existing work that was created in those programs. I am getting error messages in PS and error messages in Premiere. When I attempt to open any file in Illustrator outside of the application folder the dialogue box to open files crashes. I am however able to create new files. Any thoughts or advice would be most appreciated!

I've got a temporary hack that's fairly simple.
I open the .RAF file in a hex editor, then do a find "X30" & replace "X20". Then save the file and sho' 'nuff PhotoshopCC opens 'er right up.
Now how long's it gonna take for Adobe to get this worked out?

  • What is supported in new Photos app on Mac for face detection?

In old iPhotos, there is a feature to show suggestions for faces, is there any equivalent available in Photos?

As Alley_Cat mentioned the only sort by date is in the Moments section.  If you're looking in the All Photos sections it's only by Date Added:
In the Photos mode or an album it's by Date (EXIF capture date):
In the "folder" titled iPhoto Events, which is a collection of albums representing the events from the iPhoto Library, it's by Title also.
