Cannot preview on external firewire device

I just recently upgraded from Premiere Pro CS3 to CS4. Since doing so I cannot seem to get my video to display on my external firewire device. I have a Sony GV-D900 deck that I use for preview while I'm editing.
Has something changed in CS4 that would cause this not to work?  If I bring up a project in CS3 the video appears instantly on the firewire deck but with CS4 I get nothing. I've checked the preferences and the two applications appear to be setup with the same options.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Everything seems to be setup correctly. I forgot to mention that I can capture and manipulate the deck from the Capture window so it is communicating with the deck. I just cannot see the video on the deck when previewing the timeline. If I open a project in CS3 it shows up right away.
My main purpose for previewing on the deck is I have a TV attached to the A/V outputs of the deck and it allows me to view my project on the TV while I'm working on it. Very handy. I've used it in this manor since Premiere 6.0.
The fact that I can control and capture the GV-D900 from within Premiere CS4 seems to indicate everything is set ok. I just can't figure out why I cannot see the preview.

  • External firewire devices stopped mounting on my Xserve

I have two external Firewire 800 Lacie hard drives that I connect to my Xserve alternately to act as backup drives (and use an Applescript to copy over important files daily).
But this week, after having worked fine for a couple of years, the drives are refusing to mount on the Xserve desktop.
They both mount fine if connected to my G5 tower and work fine, but just won't show on the Xserve.
Nothing on the Xserve has changed, it hasn't crashed recently or had any upgrades done, they've just stopped working. I've tried different cables but nothing.
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance of any replies.
    John

Those LaCie drives can be funky. The external AC power supply bricks tend to fail prematurely. The symptom can be hard to troubleshoot since the drive will attempt to and can pull the juice it needs from the firewire bus. If the drive in question is under warranty LaCie will replace the brick at no charge. Otherwise they sell them for around $20 US. I keep a spare around because I have a lot of LaCie drives.

  • Problems reading my external firewire devices

It seems my 400 firewire port on my PB is fried or shorted. i cant read any device through it. my 800 port is fine, reads my 800 external drive fine, but when i try to route a 400 device either a drive or a camera through the 800 device and through the 800 port, the 800 drive ejects/removes itself from the system automatically...
any ideas on what to do or wh6y this happens?
rerally need a solution, hopefull not replacing the logic board would be good
    thanks
    eric

It may be you need to reset the 'FireWire' port.
    1) Turn off your PB remove battery, go and make a nice cup of tea. Replace battery after about 20 mins or so and start it up, does it work now? No then try:
    2) Reset PRAM and here are the instructions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
Does it work? No then try:
    3) Reset PMU here are the instructions:

I have now run out of suggestions sadly so it may be time to contact Apple.
    Hope you get it working!

  • Cannot boot from external USB device

    Hi,
I have an iMac with a superdrive that is not working. This gives me a lot of trouble, because I want to install windows.
Some month ago, I bought an external USB DVD drive, and hoped that it would help. But I quickly experienced that it did not, since I could not get boot camp to use it.
Today, I was sure that I found a good solution. I ran into a site that explains how to use en external DVD to install windows on macbook air which have no internal DVD.
    http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/9136/macbook-air-install-windows-7-with-boot-camp -without-an-external-dvd-drive/
Unfortunately this do not work - for me and my iMac.
First I installed the rEFIt tool and this works fine. The external DVD shows up as a bootable device.
But when I try to start the windows installer from the external DVD, the system just hangs and shows a windows logo with no color. This operation I carry out by selecting the external DVD in the eEFIt menu.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I don't know about the link you gave, I can only pass on my experience.
I made my bootable Windows7 X64 install disk by this method:-
"This method is used to create a new install disk if you have your authentic Windows 7 disk. Don't sweat it; it's much easier than it looks.
Note: you will need to do this on a PC
In your C drive, create these two folders: c:\windows7exe c:\windows7dvd
Go to this link http://rapidshare.com/files/297067205/oscdimg.exe and download Oscdimg.exe. Place it into c:\window7exe folder
Insert your Windows 7 disk into your DVD drive For this example, we will refer to it as the D drive.
You need to open a DOS prompt window. Do this by going to start/programs/accessories/command prompt
Your default command prompt will look something like C:\Users>.
At the prompt type cd c:\windows7exe
Your command prompt should now look like c:\window7exe>
At the command prompt, type in exactly (or copy and paste):
    oscdimg.exe -n -m -bd:\boot\etfsboot.com d:\ c:\windows7x64.iso
Note: the letter d in the above command refers to your DVD drive, change it if your DVD drive is labled with a different letter.
Press Enter. This will begin creating a new disk image. You should see a response in the DOS window that displays its progress.
When the process is complete, you will find a new disk image of your Windows 7 disk in the folder labeled c:\windows7X64
Now that you have a new disk image, you need to burn it onto a disk using ImgBurn. This is a free utility which you can download from here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Place a blank DVD into your DVD RW drive.
Launch ImgBurn and select "Write image file to disc". In the Source window, find your newly burned image in the c:\windows7X64 folder. Click on the disc icon at the bottom of the window to begin the burning process.
Voila! You have a new Windows 7 installation disk which will install with no problems. "
    .....which is on this thread
May not be any use to you without an internal DVD RW which works.
In your shoes I would really want to get my internal superdrive working.
A quick look at iFixit suggests the iMac uses a standard laptop DVD RW which are readily available, but perhaps I am missing something.

  • G5 xserve: How do I boot from a FireWire device ?

    Hi.
I have a PowerPC G5 server WITHOUT a keyboard/display and have just installed Leopard 10.5.1.
After setting up Leopard, I made a backup copy of the server HD onto a Lacie FireWire hard-drive device connected to the FireWire 400 port on the front-panel using Carbon Copy Cloner v3.
The backup appeared to work fine.
However, when I tried to boot from the FireWire device by holding down the system identified button at the same time as the on/standby button and then selecting Light 4 (to quote page 65 of the G5 User Guide… “bypass the current startup disk and start up from any other available startup disk”) nothing happened. Instead, the fans just got louder and louder and louder and louder, with the occasional flash of FireWire device and HD lights. I switched it off after 10 minutes and re-booted as normal from the HD device.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance,
    john

    Tony,
Having thought about this and read Apple's article "how to use FireWire target disk mode" (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583), let me play back what I think have to do...
    Assumptions...
    a) A working Leopard system.
    b) I want to go back to yesterday's backup.
    c) I can't use Time Machine as it's an "Advanced" install.
    d) My backup is done via Carbon Copy Clone onto my external FireWire device.
Is this what I would do... ?
    1) Get my PowerBook G4 laptop, which is also running Leopard !
    2) Switch off the Xserve G5.
    3) Connect the FireWire backup to THE LAPTOP !
    4) Connect the laptop to the Xserve using a FireWire cable.
    5) Switch on the G5 and hold down the system identifier button.
    6) When the lights rotate select Light 5 "Begin target disk mode".
    7) On the laptop an icon would appear which is the Xserve HD.
    8) Using the laptop, I then copy from the FireWire backup to the Xserve HD icon.
(I guess, as the fans may be running flat out at this point !)
    9) After the backup then eject the Xserve HD icon.
    10) Disconnect FireWire cable.
    11) Re-boot Xserve
    12) Should be running yesterday's backup.
    13) Relax !
    Blimey !

  • Outputting DVD playback to firewire device?

    Hi,
Is it possible to output the video playback from Apple's DVD Player app to an external firewire device such as a Canopus breakout box which is connected to a beamer?
Same question for other video players... Quicktime, VLC...
    Thanks!
    Maarten

No, it has to do with the capabilities of the system. There is no way that I am aware of (and some pretty thorough google searching has revealed nothing) to cause DVD footage to play out through a firewire port.
Has anyone else heard of a way of being able to do this?
If you "rip" your DVD video to a Quicktime format that can be brought into iMovie or Final Cut, you would be able to stream the video back out to the firewire. But using a non-linear editor as a playback mechanism is a bit weird.

  • Only certain sequences can use External DV device to play back/preview?

    Hi there,
I'm still working on understanding this HD workflow... Using an HMC40 avccam I shot some PH720 60P footage.  After importing to Premiere Pro CS5 I created a timeline following the guides in http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/production/pdfs/cs5_production_premium_avccam_ wfg.pdf .  I found that none of my 60p (or 59.94) sequences give me the option to show realtime playback on my external dv camera.  It simply shows "None" as the option for the external device.  While 30p (29.97) sequences show up just fine.
Is there a reason for this or is there a work around?  I have only played with these few formats so I don't know what else can and cannot be output via firewire to my mindv camera.
    Thank you!
    -Stephen

Thanks for the reply.  I am confused as to why I can view SOME HD sequences but not all via the firewire connection.  I am not concerned with seeing HD quality through the minidv camera but it goes to a tv that is usefull to see full screen for coloring and effect previewing.  It's nice to see the footage on both LCD and a tube television.
It just seems odd that one sequence can work while the other cannot but I assume it is directly related to 24p vs. 30p vs 60p etc.  I haven't seen this in the help file so that's why I asking here.  I just want to be sure it's a standard thing and that nothing is wrong on my end... and maybe an explanation so I understand it a bit better...
    Thanks!

  • Cannot Boot from OSX on external firewire drive

I recently bought a seagate hardrive and installed it in an external firewire casing. I partitioned it into two partitions, and installed osx 10.4.10 on one of the partitions, the same as is running on my Ti Book.
I tried selecting the os on the firewire drive as the startup disk, but when i restart, after the grey screen i get the flashing question mark icon, until the mac recognises only the default osx on the internal drive and boots with that instead.
That not working, i created a clone of my startup disk using DejaVu in my system preferences and saved it on the other, empty partition on the external drive and tried booting from that.
On restarting, i get the grey screen once again as the backlight fires up, and nothing more. the screen remains grey without any further ado until i hold the power button and force it to turn off. then as i start it up again, up comes the flashing question mark icon followed by a boot from the internal drive.
    Any Solutions on this?
    Many Thanks, Neptune.

    Hi Dale,
Whoops- everythings not as smooth as i thought it was!
since i restored my internal drive, a lot of things have been really messed up, starting with, for example, iTunes reverting to version 4 instead of 7. that wasnt a problem, i still had the 7 installer, and soon had my whole music library back again. but the computer appears to have a problem with the handling of graphics. the finder wont create previews of even simple jpeg images, nor will it for video. quicktime wont open any video file, i get some random error message which i cant remember stating it could not open the file. and if i view my finder window in grid icon view, the usual blue mac os desktop image that i keep as a background in the finder window isnt there, instead its pitch black. same goes for the slideshow feature in the application graphic converter, i can start a slideshow and it will scroll through the images, but every image will instead be completely black. there are no scroll bars in itunes. i can scroll down randomly by clicking where the scroll bar should be, but there is nothing visual there at all, no scroll bar, no arrows. when i connect my ipod, the main ipod window of itunes wont display any graphics either, be it the picture of the ipod or the capacity bar indicating usage of the drive for music, videos, data, etc. instead, fine print says something similar to 'cannot display image, quicktime and lzw tiff decompression plugin (?) required' I cant remember word for word what it says, dont quote me on that.
the computer also came to a dead freeze twice in ten minutes, i had to hold the power button down to get it to shut off.
im sure there are other issues too which i havent yet noticed, but even these, i havent the faintest clue what could be causing them!
    do you?

hardware test using an external optical device (iMac) on macbook pro 9 years old via firewire. What to do? and how to do it?
I thiunk the graphic card is defective and need to run hwt

    You don't.
Need a internal optical drive and the Hardware Test on disks is old and outdated anyway.
Your machine has lasted a long time, congratulations, they usually only last about 4-5 years.
They get clogged up with dust and overheat, kills the video card, there is nothing you can do as it's hardware damage over time.

  • Problem connecting Firewire device and external HD at the same time

Hi. I'm attempting to record digital audio through a Presonus Firepod A/D interface via a Firewire 400 to 800 cable connected to one of the Firewire 800 ports on a mid-2010 Mac Pro running Snow Leopard.
The problem is that if I have an external HD connected to one of the other Firewire 800 ports on the computer and powered on at the same time, the connection to the Presonus Firewire device is not recognized by the Mac Pro. Not only that, performance of the Mac Pro is affected adversely and System Profiler is unable to list any Firewire devices. If I turn the external HD off, the Presonus device is recognized and listed in System Profiler and the machine runs fine. I'm able to connect two external hard drives via separate Firewire 800 ports on the Mac Pro and both drives mount w/ no problem. It's only when I try to connect one of the external HDs and the Presonus audio device at the same time that the problem occurs.
I used this same arrangement on a PowerMac G5 running Tiger w/ no problems whatsoever. If the 400 to 800 cable is bad, I would think it wouldn't work at all, but it does when only the Presonus Firepod is connected and powered on. Any ideas?

Have done more research and apparently this is not an uncommon problem: overloading the Firewire bus when connecting an audio device along with an additional device like an external hard drive. As I understand it now, audio signal is a bandwidth hog and the solution is to get a Firewire PCIe card which will have its own independent Firewire bus and which I'll use exclusively for my audio device.

  • Firewire device looses connection when external screen is inserted into the thunderbolt port? HELP

    HI
I am a recording studio engineer. Ive got a Firewire AD/DA Converter (Focusrite Saffire Pro 56) running from my Firewire port of my MacBook Pro, which is running OSX Mavericks. I've also got an external Screen I want to use as an extended display. I'm using a HDMI cable from the screen to a HDMI to Thunderbolt Converter which I then plug into my Thurderbolt Port.
As soon as I plug the screen in, the Firewire Port looses connection completely and I cant use or even choose the Saffire Pro 56 as audio driver. Another thing happens where the Thunderbolt port replaces the Saffire Pro 56 Driver with the screen as the audio output source.
Please help, there's nothing I can find to fix this.
    Thanks Maurice

You don't mention which model you have, but this is from the M-Audio Firewire 410 Manual Troubleshooting section:
The FireWire 410 has been designed to give you high performance and professional quality audio. It has been tested under a wide range
of systems and operating conditions. In the real world, however, there is a nearly infinite number of possible operating scenarios, any of
which could affect your system’s performance. Much like owning an automobile, “your mileage may vary.” This section can not begin to
cover all possible issues you may encounter, however we want to give you some suggestions on common problems you may experience.
One thing to avoid is connecting too many devices. The FireWire bus is a dependable, high-speed, high-bandwidth protocol which is ideally
suited for digital audio. Nonetheless, it’s important to remember that audio and multimedia streaming places considerable demands on
your processor and the FireWire bus. Although it is theoretically possible to chain many multiple FireWire devices in series, doing so may
    potentially degrade your audio performance.
I guess this degradation could also affect the Firewire HD. Maybe there is a simple fix, but it sounds like the M-Audio people have been down this road before.

  • 10.4.11 external firewire audio device noise/distortion

    Hi
Subsequent to upgrading to 10.4.11 I now have persistent noise from my external firewire audio device. It's an Edirol FA-101 and worked perfectly in 10.4.10 and earlier. I tried replacing the firewire cable with no effect.
The FA-101 is a class compliane device so uses Apples built in firewire audio drivers.. has anyone else had firewire audio problems with 10.4.11?

No I doubt it... FW can be strange sometimes.
Look in Sytem Profiler, if it says you don't have FW at all, then remove all power from the iMac, let it set a few hours to Drain down, plug back in everthing.

    Hello dginther,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand wireless is not working properly. If the issue just began occurring, I would perform a system restore. I want you to bring the computer back to the earliest restore point possible, in an attempt to dodge whatever caused the issue. Here is a document on how to perform a System Restore: System Restore
Next, please try the steps in this HP document: Troubleshooting Your Wireless Network and Internet Connection (Windows 8)
These steps should be enough to resolve the issue. If not, you can try a manual reinstall of the driver:
    1. Go into Device Manager, then Network adapters.
    2. Right-click on the wireless driver, and select "Uninstall".
    3. Restart the computer. This will force the driver to reinstall itself.
Please let me know the results of your troubleshooting. Thanks!
