Cannot print or show printer queue

Hi,
I have got quite a big problem with my printer application. I am only using network printers over smb here:
Basically if I print something nothing happens. I notice a program to appear in the Dock and immediately disappear again. I can not say if this is the printer queue because it happens too fast. As a result nothings gets printed at all.
When I try to open the printer queue program from the system settings in order to have a look what might be wrong the same thing happens: The program opens and closes at once in the Dock. Else nothing.
In the activity monitor the process is just not there, not even if I keep it open trying to print or opening the printer queue. Probably crashes instantly.
Restarting the computer does not help. I've got the latest software updates but I cannot nail the problem down to a specific version because the last time I printed is like 3 months ago. (paperless and stuff like that ;-))
So that is my problem. If you have any hint I'd be very pleased.
Thanks
Stefan

Hi there.
One suggestion would be to pause the print queue. Then when you try to print you can see if the print job is being created and held in the queue.
If the print job fails to be created then you know that the application is not creating the job correctly. Does this occur with all applications?
If the print job is appearing in the held queue but errors when you resume the print queue then it would suggest something is wrong with the printing system. You could try removing the network queue and adding it again. If this does not help then I suggest a reset of the printing system - process described below. The reset will remove all of your printer queues in Print & Fax but not remove your printer drivers, so you will only need to add your printer queues again.
*How to Reset the Printing System*
1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
2. Move your mouse over the Printers list
3. Hold down the Control button and click the mouse
4. Click the "Reset printing system ..." popup
5. Restart your Mac

  • Since latest upgrade I cannot "print" or show "print preview" from any web page. This is true of both of my printers and I have followed directions on plug-ins and have reinstalled Firefox etc. I am about ready to switch to Internet Explorer! w

Since upgrading Firefox, it doesn't respond when I click on print and/or print preview while displaying web pages.. No error message, just no response. I tried using both my printers..a HP and a Canon and get no results with either. I have no problem printing from any other place (including "Print" instructions within web pages, usually). I have recently upgraded my desktop (Dell Vostro 220) to Windows 7 and it went smoothly. The Firefox upgrade came at about the same time, so I don't know if Windows 7 is part of the problem. I need be able to print from the screen of web pages!

    Hi jjoyceeric,
Have you looked at the Knowledge Base article [[Firefox prints incorrectly]]? There is some good troubleshooting information in there. I would suggest that you try resetting your print settings.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Random print jobs showing up in print queue when printing...

Whenever I print something, one or two other random files will show up in the print queue.  The printer will not try and print these additional jobs, and it does not prevent another print job from printing, but each time more random files will show up.  The print queue will fill up with these additional jobs until they are manually deleted.  What a pain.  Does anyone have a solution???

These random files can be communication files and are used to interogate the printer about its status. Typically they will be processed by the printer and then vanish from the print queue. So if they are not being processed and you are having to manually remove them then there could be a setting in the printer that needs to be changed or you have to check from an updated driver.
To confirm if it is the printer queue / driver that is checking the status, you can open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and select Printers in the left column. You can then select the printer in the top right pane and see its information in the bottom right pane (or if this is the only printer you have the information will appear in the right pane). You will see an entry called Printer Commands. If it shows something like Report Levels then this confirms that these files you are seeing are for checking the printer status.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Wireless Setup -Printing shows in Queue and then disappears. Not Printing

I just received the Officejet Pro 8600 as a gift and loaded the set up software and  it on my wireless network.  When I try to print an email or a coupon, the command goes to the printer and shows in the queue. Then after several seconds, the printing queue (job) disappears without printing the document.  Does this command go through the HP ePrint function or the Network Officejet Pro 8600?  It shows the HP ePrint as being on USB.
I've run all of the diagnostics, downloaded all of the new software, firmware and updates.  I've spend many hours trying to get the printer to print.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Hi @bksechols
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.  I understand that when you send a print job to your Officejet 8600 printer that it goes to the print queue and then disappears without the print job printing.
To better assist you, would you please provide some additional information?
How is the printer connected (USB cable, ethernet, or wireless)?
What operating system are you using?
Are all print jobs failing? If yes and you are using a Windows operating system, please Try the HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows.  The HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free utility (tool) that helps to quickly resolve common printing, scanning and connectivity issues.
When you send a print job are emailing the printer’s ePrint email address? If so please review The HP ePrint Print Job Did Not Print If you are sending the print job by using the print command, please review the Print Jobs from Your HP Printer are Stuck in the Print Queue document.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're users here and do not speak for "Apple Inc."
Some basic printer troubleshooting steps before worrying about a printer driver:
    1. Have you tried turning the printer off and back on?
2A. Is the printer attached with a cable?
If yes, have you tried unplugging and re-plugging both ends of the printer cable?
If that does not help, can you test the printer with another cable?
2B. If your printer is not connected to the computer with a cable, have you tried restarting your printer (assuming wireless connection)?
Have you tried restarting your wireless router?
    3. Have you tried restarting your MacBook? (Be sure to save your work first.)
    4. Does the printer have ink? (Doesn't usually generate a 'communications error' though)
    5. Have you updated OS X or the program you're trying to print from recently?

  • I have a new MacBook Pro with OS10.8.2 and cannot get Contacts to print a list of addresses with pictures showing.  There is a check box selecting "picture" which has been checked - but no picture.  This worked fine on OS10.7.5.  Problem??

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Printer communication error and cannot add a new printer

I was happily using my Epson Artisan 810 printer this morning, connected wirelessly to my iMac.  All of a sudden I cannot print, get "Communication Error".  Checked Epson's website, no luck there.  Re-checked my wireless settings on the printer itself and re-confirmed them, it will print test pages from the printer, but still not communicating with the iMac.  I thought that removing the printer and then adding it back in might help, but now I cannot add any printer at all.
I resorted to my MacBook Pro, and now have the same problem with this as well.
Any ideas please?  What else can I check.  My internet and so on are fine.  The printer itself shows the wireless icon and says the reception is excellent on the printout it produced.
    Thanks so much!
    L.

It would be unusual for only Bonjour to stop working in the printer. The more likely is that the printer is set to a different network subnet to that for your Mac or, as you mentioned, something like a firewall is blocking it.
The IP addressing is the most common cause. If there is a process to view or print the network settings for the Epson, then this will show what IP address range it has, which should be the same as your Mac. With the IP address, there will be four sets of numbers. For a typical home network, the first three sets are known as the IP subnet, while the last set is the network address. For example, a device with an IP address of 10.0.1.5, has an IP subnet of 10.0.1 and a network address of 5. For your Mac to 'see' the printer, both devices would need the same IP subnet, while having a different network address. So if you can check what IP address the Epson has, you may find it is using a different IP subnet to your Mac.

  • MacBook Pro cannot connect to wireless printer

I just replaced my printer with an HP Photosmart plus e all in one B210. I set it up and it connected to my network and prints fine from my PC. When I installed the software on my MacBook, it is able to find the printer, but after installation is complete it is unable to connect. I have checked the HP support page but it appears I have done everything correctly. I am assuming there is a setting or two that I need to tweak but I cannot figure it out. I have turned off firewall, and all devices are connected to the same network. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Apparently my original post was not clear enough. The printer shows up in Print&Fax under System Preferences as idle with a green dot. I have tried with "share this printer" selected and printer sharing turned on but still does not connect. The printer works just fine with my PC connected via ethernet to a dual band Airport Extreme. I have installed/reinstalled the software several times and the printer says it has the latest firmware. I am also unable to utilize the AirPrint feature with my iPhone 4 running 4.2.2.

  • Canon LBP6000 print driver - no printer appears in the 'add printer' section'  I have installed Mac CAPT Ve r340 and nothing shows.r

I was having problems printing from my Canon LBP6000.  Print jobs remained held in the queue.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the Mac CAPT Ve r340 driver from Canon's website, no improvement.  The printer works fine with my Windows laptop.
I found an option to remove all printers from the Print preferences section. I can't remember how I did this, but all printers were removed.  I reinstalled the above driver, but now in the 'print & scan' - 'add printer' section, I have no printer options.  And no idea how to get printer options.  So very open to advice.
    Thanks
    T.

The ability to see the LBP6000 in the Add Printer view is not reliant on the printer driver but the USB cable. If you have the printers USB cable connected directly to the Mac, as opposed to having it connected to the Windows computer you mention or to some sort of USB hub, then it should appear in the Add Printer > Default view. If it does not show, then try another USB cable. You can also open System Information on the Mac and select the USB section in the left column. Then in the top right pane you will see all the USB busses on the Mac and the LBP should be seen under one of the busses if the USB cable is okay.
With regards to the action to remove all printers, I would bet that you performed a reset of the printing system.

  • Cannot print since HP Printer Software Update 2.5.2

The first document I tried to print after updating the printer software failed to print - it shows up in the print queue, but it stops there. I have an HP Color LaserJet 2500L attached to the computer with a USB cable. I have tried a different cable, and I have tried printing from a different Mac -- same problem. I have re-downloaded the update, applied it, repaired permissions, and still it will not print. The printer will print fine when connected to a Windows XP PC. Is there any way I can get the old drivers (v 2.4.1?) and see if they work? Everything worked fine before this update.

I think we have a workaround, though the problem with 2.5.2 still persists. I followed the steps John recommended:
In Terminal, type the "ls -l /System/Library/Extensions" command, then delete all of the items whose name starts with "hp_" in that directory.
    cd System/Library/Extensions
    rm hp_
The last command can be done for all the hp_ files, and you may have to use sudo if the machine says you need to be an administrator. If you're more comfortable in the Finder, you can just go to System/Library/Extensions and delete the hp_ files manually.
Disconnect the printer, delete the printer if it's still there, reconnect the printer, and run Software Update to install the driver again.
I noticed that after I deleted the hp extensions, emptied the trash, disconnected and turned the printer off, turned it back on and reconnected it, and then rebooted the computer, that the printer showed up on the printer list without applying the 2.5.2 update. When I tried printing a document, it worked! Then I did the software update to install 2.5.2, and could no longer print! There is something definitely wrong with the 2.5.2 package. So I went through the whole process again, and as long as I do not install the 2.5.2 update, I can print just fine.
I hope that between HP and Apple, there is a corrected software update so that we do not have to continually ignore this one. I hope others out there who are having this problem try these steps and post how they worked for you. Thanks to John Blanchard for heading us in the right direction!

  • Cannot get XP to print

Hello! I've been working all morning on getting my really weird network going Right now, I'm stuck on an issue between my old Windows XP box and my new iMac G5 (running OSX 10.5.5). Ive got the two computers networking and file sharing okay, but I have an HP Deskjet 5940 hooked up to the system. it used to be hooked directly to the PC, but I swapped it when I got the Mac and hooked it into the iMac. (I still have the drivers - the CD is good for installing on both Mac or PC.) I could never get the XP to print through the Mac, but today I'm trying to get that going.
When I swapped from PC to Mac, I cleaned my PC. I mean to uninstalled and removed everything. Now all that's on there are some browsers and my McAfee Firewall (which is also open to the iMac network just fine).
So I downloaded and installed Bonjour (1.0.5 I think is the version - it's the latest one). It detected the HP printer, and installed it as a generic postscript on the XP. I'm trying to test print right now, but I cannot get it to print. The test file (which is just a notepad document with the word "test" in it) is obviously coming through to the Mac just fine - I can see the test in the printer queue on my Mac - however the print job is "stopped". When I try to resume, I get this:
    Opening printer connection
    GenericClass: waiting for device
    Opening printer connection
    GenericClass: waiting for device
    Opening printer connection
    GenericClass: waiting for device
fatal: Opening printer connection failed: Unable to open the printer connection. Please check your printer connections and check for printer errors.
Now, I have checked the printer connections. I also have VMWare installed and running on my Mac (with XP), and I can print form that just fine. i can also print from my Mac just fine. Obviously the PC box is connecting to the Mac just fine, because the file is sitting in the queue, but for some reason, it won't print from the PC box. Because it's printing form the Mac perfectly, I can safely assume the connections are fine. So what's getting botched here? (and yes, I've also deactivated my firewall to see if maybe that's the issue, but it does the same thing, firewall on or not.)
    Anyone have any ideas?

Have you installed the printer drivers for the printer in question on your iMac?  Have you checked if they have 10.4 PowerPC drivers?  Or are the drivers only for Intel?  Have you looked at open source printer drivers if the manufacturer drivers are only for Intel*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html
If none of the above work, you may want to set your iMac G5 as a print sharing machine through the Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Sharing panel, and connect the printer directly to the iMac. As long as the iMac is on the same wireless network it should be able to let other machines print to it.

  • Print Job remains in queue even though it prints OK?

    Hello All,
I am trying to help a friend of mine setup wireless printing from her Macbook. Unfortunately I don’t know very much about Macs and OSX but I am a quick learner
    The setup:
Virgin Media Cable Modem -> connected (RJ45) to a Wireless Linksys Cable Modem -> connected (RJ45) to a Belkin USB Hub.
From the USB hub I have two printers connected:
    1 x HP Deskjet
    1 x Samsung ML-2240 Laserjet
Both these printers install to the Macbook perfectly as default USB devices (wirelessly) via the USB Hub. They also appear correctly in the Belkin USB Hub software console.
The HP printer works perfectly every time it is used, no issues whatsoever. The Samsung printer prints ok the first time but the print jobs do not disappear from the print queue on the Macbook, the print job doesn’t appear to complete even though it has actually printed without any issue.
The problem this causes is that after the first print job has been printed it is not possible to print again. Even if I delete the print job from the queue manually I cannot still not print a second time. The only way I can get the printer to print again is to unplug and then plug back in the USB cable that is connected to the USB Hub. When I unplug the cable the print job disappears from the queue on the Macbook. I can then reconnect the USB cable and connect to the printer and it will print again.
I have made sure that I have the latest firmware on the Macbook which is running 10.5.* OSX. I have also installed the latest Firmware and Drivers on the Samsung Printer and the USB Hub.
Is there a different way to setup the print queue that you think may help? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I spent 5 hours on this yesterday and it still isn’t working
    Thanks
    M

It should bring up the Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) 1.3.11 manual if you're running 10.5.8 (hint; 10.5 is meaningless). Since it doesn't, I suggest doing an Archive & Install installation, followed by running Software Update.
P.S. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12477185 might give you some clues.

  • How do I clear a hidden print job from the queue

My printer continuously shows to busy even when the print queue shows to be empty.  However, when I check ink cartridge levels, an uprinted job shows up in the queue in the background.  But as soon as I close the ink level screen, the unprinted job disappears.  I am running OS 10.6.8.  I have a Lexmark Pro705.   However, the problem seems to be with the Mac as the Mac shows the printer to be busy even when it is powered down and unplugged.

    Hi,
From the Control Panel, open Administrative Tools and select Sevices.  Browse down to the print spooler service, right click it and select Properties then click on the Stop button.  Now browse to C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS and delete the job inside this folder - You may need to click a prompt to gain the appropriate authority to open the PRINTERS folder.
Restart the computer and you should find the document(s) have been removed.
