Cannot print to networked Brother MFC "network busy"

This (most recently) happened on my iMac after upgrading to Snow Leopard, fixed with help from Brother tech support. Now having the same issue on my iBook after the upgrade...
the MFC-440CN is wired to the dsl router/switch/access point, as is the iMac, the iBook connects to the network over the wi-fi. It seems like every time there is a software update I have to jump through hoops to make it work with tech support, but I'm never quite sure what the solution actually was... I can ping the static IP of the printer, I delete it, re-add it, and try to print... everything looks good then I get an error "Network host '192.168.254.44' is busy; will retry in 30 seconds" It never completes.
When I try to add the printer now, it does not appear under the "default" tab on the "add printer" screen (it seems to me that it used to), so I've been adding it under the IP tab/protocol IPP.. when I start to type the IP of the printer, it completes the address for me and pulls up ""Brother MFC-440CN CUPS" for "print using" but it still doesn't work.
I'm getting really sick of these printer issues, if I wanted to constantly be F'ing with these kinds of issues I would have stuck with my Windows machines. This issue seems to reappear periodically... at least four times since I bought these Macs in July; can someone please give me a clue as to what keeps happening here? Thanks!!!

If I understand correctly, Bonjour is a protocol that does auto device discovery on the network and that wasn't working, but IS now. When I go to the printer set-up screen under "default" the printer is automatically recognized on the network, I don't have to know the address... just click and DONE. That's the way it worked at first, then something got broken... that is how it's supposed to work right!?
Yep, that is correct. Bonjour uses multicasting to advertise itself on the local network, much like AppleTalk. When a user selects to add a printer, if that printer supports Bonjour, then the printer will be seen in the Default browser view and when selected, the printing system does a small amount of interrogation to look for a locally installed driver. If found, the Print Using menu will automatically add the correct 'print driver' and the user then simply needs to click Add to complete the installation.
So, as to why this was not working on wireless but on wired, and whether the firmware update helped to resolve this is uncertain, but given that you are now connected and printed you would have to assume that something was probably amiss with the machine and the update helped. With your role you would know that some things can't be explained with hardware/software and thank goodness they just work...

try disabling email scanning for incoming mail.
One of the last things that occurs is the mail server and Thunderbird sign off on "where we are up to" and Thunderbird stores this state information in the popstate.dat file in your profile (there is one in each POP mail account folder). If the anti virus, or you for that matter, end the conversation a few seconds early that hand off does not occur and the popstate is not stored.

  • Can't print to Networked Brother MFC-7420 Printer after installing 10.6

A few days ago my dad decided to finally take the plunge and let me upgrade his operating system from 10.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6.6 on his Imac.
Ever since then I have been unable to print to his Brother MFC-7420 printer.
The printer is connected to his Imac via USB and I connect to his printer through our Linksys Router on my laptop MacBook Pro. The downside about this setup is that his computer has to be physically on for me to be able to see and/or print to the printer.
When he was running 10.5 I was able to print to his printer with no problems but now that he is running 10.6 I can "see" the printer but when I sent a print job to it the Print Queue for the Brother on my screen says "Connecting to Printer" and never gets any further.
Printer Sharing is turned on as usual allowing "Everyone" on the network to print. I've tried removing and reinstalling the driver on my computer to no avail, I haven't tried doing the same to his computer.
A side note to make though, when my dad is running 10.5 on his machine and I try to add the Printer via my Print&Fax the system will automatically set the "Print Using" to the correct Brother MFC-7420 Cups" driver. However, if he is running 10.6 my system just comes up with the "Generic PostScript Printer".
Is there something I should do on his end or my end so that "my" computer can print again to his printer?
Any suggestions are appreciated, if any of you need more info feel free to post and I'll try to help. Thanks!

A couple of suggestions for you.
Ensure you have installed the MFC-7420 OS X 10.6 CUPS driver on both Mac's.
Open Print & Fax and select the Default view and select the shared printer. When your Print Using menu selects Generic Postscript, change this menu to 'Select printer software' and then search for the 7420 driver. According to Brother support the driver name will be listed as "MFC-7420 + CUPS".

  • Cannot add networked Brother MFC-7820N after upgrading to Leopard

    Hi,
I did a clean install of Leopard on a new drive I installed on my Macbook. Then I migrated my account from an old drive which was running the latest version of Tiger.
Leopard is running fine, except that I cannot add my networked printer (Brother MFC-7820N). According to Brother, the printer drivers come with the Leopard CD. In the /Library/Printers/Brother directory there sub-directories for Brother LUT, Filter, Icons, Profiles, Utilities. So I think the drivers are present.
In the Print & Fax system preference, I click to add a printer and nothing shows up under "Default". According to Brother's instructions, the printer should show up. Is the MFC-7820N Bonjour capable?
Is there something else I need to do? I am not running control center like I did under Tiger.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Network is a wireless network with the printer attached to a netgear wireless router.

Okay, I found the answer to the problem. It is a Brother configuration, not a Leopard one. Needed to setup Bonjour on the printer by configuring the mDNS properly.
From a browser, go to your printer using the ip address. Click on Network configuration link. Default user/password is: admin/access. Find the "mDNS" link, click on it. Then configure with a name such as BrotherMFC and select enable. Once this is setup, then clicking on "+" in the print and fax system preference works.

  • Cannot print with hp 2600n through network

I installed Leopard on my two month old Imac(latest model) with no real glitches and thought all was fine until I tried printing with my HP color laserjet 2600n through my network.
I get my network showing up as guest sharing(not logging me in under my name) and even though I could print fine with Tiger, I cannot print with Leopard. The request shows up in the print queue but does not print.
Any advice would be appreciated. I was never prompted before for a password everytime I printed and was always logged in to my network and not a guest sharing before. I know I'm missing something here but everything else transferred over fine from Tiger but the printer is a mystery.
    Thank you for any help,
    Nathan

Try resetting the base station that your printer USB is plugged into.
Worked for me with an Airport express

  • Cannot print with my Brother DCP-7055 (copies and scans are working)

Since I updated my system I am not able to print something with my Mac on the Brother DCP-7055.
When I want to print something it shows on the printer that it is submitting the data but nothing happen. From this moment the printer is like "blocked" and all the new task are in the waiting list.
I tried everything, delete the printer and reinstall it, reinstall the driver and everything.
It is not a problem of the printer I think, because I can do copies and as well I can do a scan (connected with my Mac as well).
    I need help!
    Thanks in advance.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

  • Installed 10.5.7 and cannot print from Brother printers

I installed the 10.5.7 software update the other day and now cannot print from my Brother MFC 5860CN or MFC-7220. I'm very frustrated because my business has come to a complete halt. I've gone to the Brother site and installed additional drivers, but still having no success.
The 5860CN error message is that the printer is 'offline' and the 7220 error message is either 'raster file failed' or 'genericclass: waiting for device'. Printing does not work on either Safari or Firefox.

The 5860CN error message is that the printer is 'offline'
    1 turn the printer off.
    2 remove the power plug
    3 remove the Ethernet cable.
4 clear the print setup on the Mac
    5 restart the Mac
6 plug in the printer's power
7 plug in the printer's Ethernet
    8 turn the printer on
9 locate the printer using the Brother Control Center utility. Verify that it has a valid IP address. If possible, set it to a fixed IP address _outside of the DHCP pool assigned by your router_. (You do have a router, right?) Please note that a 169.254.x.y address is not a valid IP address.
10 set up the printer from Print & Fax.
and the 7220 error message is either 'raster file failed' or 'genericclass: waiting for device'. Printing does not work on either Safari or Firefox.

  • 10.5.3 has broken printing to my Brother printer

I updated both my MacBook Pro and my wife's MacBook to 10.5.3 three days ago. Since then, we cannot print to our Brother MFC-440CN (usually connected to our Airport Express).
All attempts at printing, wireless or USB, fail. When I'm watching from the print queue monitor it flashes the following error message when I try to print:
Unable to send 3378 bytes of print data! (USB write error)
I was able to see, install and print on my friend's HP off of his Airport.
Can anybody help? Is there a solution other than waiting for Apple or Brother to issue a fix?
I have deleted and reinstalled my Brother multiple times, and printing fails and I get the error message no matter what (even if the printer is plugged directly into a USB port on one of our computers.

    Hi,
What did you update from? 10.4 or a previous version of 10.5?
Did you look for any updates on Brother's website?
I see something called the Brother CUPS printer drivers: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10384
I can't vouch for it, but you could look into it. CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) is the open source underpinnings of how Macs print. More at www.cups.org
You can also try to reset your printer. There are some shareware programs out there that do that. I can't recall them at the moment, but that fixed a printer that I had printing to a couple of years ago. I looked around, but couldn't find anything.

  • Cannot change name on a MI424WR network device.

I have an Actiontec MI424WR Rev I with the latest update.  I can see everything connected to the router (network) and change the names of most items.  One device (the printer) will not give me the option to change the device name.  Why? Is this fixable?
    Thanks

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello,
The Printer is a Brother MFC-8480DN.
So I went into the settings and manually set the printer to DHCP and guess what..... it now lets me change the name on the router.
I guess the default is not actually DHCP so I was making assumptions.....
    Thanks

I can't rename my printer either.
In the case of my printer (and I suspect yours) when installing the printer as a LAN device, the printer is assigned a static IP address during the configuration process.  This is different than letting the router assign an IP and then checking the "Static Lease Type" in the router's advanced setup.
I have a couple of other devices, a PC, a WAP, etc., where I've manually assigned them their own IP addresses.  I can't rename those devices in the router's setup either.
Bottom line:  It seems that if a device has a static IP that is assigned to manually and outside of the Actiontec's setup, that device can't be renamed.
If your printer was actually assigned its IP address by the router's DHCP, I'm stumped.

  • Firefox crashes on Windows 7 when printing to a Windows 7 network printer.

On Windows 7 running Firefox 3.6.10, I cannot print to a Windows 7 network printer. Firefox crashes every time as soon as I hit print.
However, the situation is very specific. I can print from Windows XP using Firefox 3.6.10 to a Windows 7 network printer. I can also print from Windows 7 using Firefox 3.6.10 to a Windows XP network printer. The only situation that doesn't work is using Firefox and printing from Windows 7 machine to Windows 7 machine.
Firefox is also the only program that does not print. I can print using Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, MS Word, MS Excel, and every other application just fine. Firefox is exclusive in that it is the only program that crashes and refuses to print. The drivers that are being used a PostScript drivers.
I have tried multiple versions of Firefox from older ones to the Firefox 4 beta and the program crashes every time.
Again, the only time it crashes is printing from a Windows 7 client computer to a Windows 7 network printer. Printing from XP to Windows 7 and from Windows 7 to XP works.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. The only program I've noticed the problem with is Firefox, so I'm assuming it's a problem at the application level.

Looks like a Windows problem, but not restricted to Win7 or 3.6.10 - there's one on Vista SP2 with Firefox 3.6 and another with 4.0b6 on Win7.

  • Printing is mirrored on Brother MFC-210; no print settings in Print Dialog

I recently purchased a new iMac. I transfered the contents of my Powerbook to the iMac. When I try to print to my Brother MFC-210 printer from any application, the result is reversed (mirrored).
On my Powerbook, the Print Dialog box for the MFC-210C includes "Print Settings" as a selection and that screen has a check box for mirrored printing. On my iMac, the Print Dialog box does not contain a "Print Settings" selection. I assume that somehow "mirror printing" has somehow been selected but I can't unselect it. Is this an OS-X problem or a printer driver problem? I have tried downloading the most up to date printer drivers without any success. Any assistance with this issue would be appreciated.

I was able to fix the problem by carefully following the instructions on the Brother website about installing the printer and downloading the driver.

  • Cannot print PDF's from brother HL2140 after last 10.05.8 update.

ok so, after fighting with apple about various final cut issues, I have thus far refused to 'upgrade' and I use that term very loosely, to snow leopard. I was reminded to update a few days ago-and now cannot print from my brother HL2140. I have NEVER had problems with this printer-ever. In fact I have a second one at my office with a macbook-and they work fine.
Whatever was in this new 'update' has completely screwed up something! I have downloaded new drivers again and again. I have installed and reinstalled the printer and even tried printing with generic drivers. Nothing is working.
The printer is detected by the mac, but it refuses to print. It doesn't even pretend it's gonna print, just awkward silence while we look at each other.
    Can anyone suggest anything?

Dude, after the last apple upgrade I cant open half my programs. (almost everything that isnt apple wont work!!!) and it wont even let me send a crash report!!! Way to go apple for screwing everyone!!!
