  • Since using Maverick OS, I cannot quit mail without "force-quit".

Since I downloaded and started using Maverick OS, I cannot quit Mail without using the "Force-Quit..." command. The "Quit Mail" command under the Menu is greyed out.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

You can also force quit apps using Activity Monitor located in HD > Applications > Utilities.
    Select the CPU tab.
    Select Mail under Process Name.
Select Mail then click the force quit icon  (circle with an x) top left side of the Activity Monitor window.

  • Mail not available plus cannot quit mail to switch off

I clicked on an upgrade available and allowed it to complete. Then when trying to switch off a message that MAIL was not allowing this. Also I cannot access my inbox.  The quit mail are grey instead of the usual black

Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, select Mail, and press the Force Quit button. If that doesn't work, save and close everything you can and use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process.

  • I cannot quit Mail

Whenever I quit Mail it starts back up on it's own within about 15 seconds. That, coupled with major problems importing old calendars into iCal is making me think that Leopard is an operating system Microsoft would be proud of.

Like others, I had a problem with mail in Leopard in that I cannot quit the Mail app so I always had to Force Quit. Although it did not seem to do any damage, I was not pleased with this method.
I found a solution though. Make a copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder (on your desktop or on an external drive). Then delete ~/Library/Mail folder, log out, log back in. Start Mail app and it should prompt you to set up your account. If you have an IMAP account, the server should recreate your mailboxes although it may take a few minutes.
After doing this, I can now Quit from Mail app without any problem in Leopard.

  • Cannot quit mail

Quit mail is greyed out in Mac Mail. There is nothing running in the background within mail and no pending mails to send, so I am unclear why it is doing this.
I can Force Quit, but that is hardly a user friendly solution.
This problem has only just started.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in earlier versions there is only one.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Cannot Quit Mail or do other stuff in it - was opened before install

    First tries:
Most Mail menue alternatives seem to be dimmed, including Preferences, and Quit.
I use both POP with my e-mail accounts, and IMAP for copies of all Mail (approximately).
I will not quit/terminate the Mail App until I know the reason.
    1) I opened Internet accounts and turned off one particular account and the others, except my main POP account.
I did not see where I can turn of POP from that to see if I at least can Quit the Mail App.
The first account that I turned off is used for selecting sender address, not for receiving mail, I do not POP from it.
    This changed nothing it seems.
    2) I had changed coloring defaults, but
    defaults delete com.apple.mail ColorQuoterColorList
returned as other persons have reported, something like not changed.
    3) I waited until Indexing of Macintosh HD was finished.
    Some details:
Using external SSD for Macintosh HD. Where I installed Maverick without installation problems. Except this.
I am waiting to get other user feedback on this before I do anything special, cannot reboot for example.
    Thanks!
    /groundliner

  • I can't quit mail and thus, I can't shut down the computer. How do you "manually " shut down mail or computer (control-alt-delete in wintel world)

I cannot quit mail for some reason. How can I shut it down?
I need to do this before I can shut down the computer.

To Force Quit a program go to the Apple Logo item in the menu bar and select Force Quit. Select the program from the list and click Force Quit.
To Hard Power down it is the same as Wintel. Press the power button until the system Turns Off. Not the best solution but needed sometimes. Yes even on a Mac.

  • "Mail cannot access your mailbox information because it's already in use. Rebuild Mailbox information    Quit"  Both quits Mail.

After installing Yosemite, my Mail stops working after about 20-30 seconds when this Dialog Box pops up, freezes Mail and says:
"Mail cannot access your mailbox information because it’s already in use.
Another application on your computer or on your local network is using your mailbox information. Click Quit to quit Mail. Then log out of this computer and any other computer you’re using. After you log in again, open Mail on one computer only.
If this message reappears, there may be a network server problem. Contact your system administrator to determine if it can be resolved by rebuilding your mailbox information. Then click Rebuild Mailbox Information.
If this message reappears, there may be a network server problem. Contact your system administrator to determine if it can be resolved by rebuilding your mailbox information. Then click Rebuild Mailbox Information.
    Rebuild Mailbox information    Quit"
Clicking on either one quits Mail. I am receiving my emails. I can even send my self a test email and receive it before it freezes up in 20-30 seconds. My ISP thinks it's a "Kernal" software problem.
Through advice by a friend, I have tried:
Applications - Utililities - Disk Utilities -  and selected my hard drive and then click Repair Permissions
Rebooted a bunch of times. The first time Repair Permissions printed a few pages of stuff. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th times, it printed out this:
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”User differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; user is 244.Group differs on “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”; should be 0; group is 244.Repaired “private/var/db/displaypolicyd”
    Permissions repair complete
But I still have the same problem I stated the the beginning of this:(
    Any more advice?

I have the exact same issue, just after installing Yosemite.  Please advise

  • Cannot open mail - unexpected quit

    Hi All,
I can't open my mail since upgrading to Leopard. Other users on this mac (and therefore, the same code) do not have the problem, suggesting I've got some data issues.
Can I "reset" my mail? I'm in the fortunate position of not caring if I lose mail data.
A subset of the error message details is below, if anyone can decode them:
    Application Specific Information:
    -[MailboxesOutlineViewStateStorage clearAndResetShouldShowVariables]
    -[MetadataManager getAllCalendarStoreData]
    * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'trying to set a non-ToDo MailboxUid for a ToDo. The MailboxUid for a ToDo must be a ToDosMailboxUid'

Quit Mail. Then to remove the preferences file go to "~/Library/Preferences~ and rename the file "com.apple.mail.plist" to something else so that Mail cannot find it. When you run Mail again it will create a brand new one and assume that you are a new user. Now quit mail. In my case the application still crashes so this is NOT my problem. But other people have suggested it worked for them. If it does then you need to restart Mail and setup new accounts.
The other technique is to repair file permissions using the Disk Utility in the "/Applications/Utilities" folder. Select a disk and a button will appear asking if you want to Repair Permissions. Go for it. This did not fix my problem either.
Another discussion thread on Leopard suggests simply starting over. I will try this later today when I have a few hours. Basically remove the preferences.plist file as above. Also rename the folder "~/Library/Mail" to something else. Then run Mail again which will think you are a new user. Setup your email accounts and make sure that you can retrieve and send mail without crashing. Now import your old mailboxes using the Import Mailboxes command on the File menu in Mail. Do this one mailbox at a time to find out which mailboxes will crash the app. This may take awhile!
I will let you know if this works for me.
    Regards, mollygoat

Cannot get mail without quitting first.  Any idea why?

Does it work?  Well, the beep occurs but no mail comes through without a very long wait.  If I quit mail and re-open it, all the new messages come through.
Love has nothing to do with this.
