Cannot re-load photos into iPhoto after moving to external

HELP!
I have over 3,000 photos and had to move them to an external drive as my computer ran out of space. Now that I have moved everything, I am having a hard time accessing my photos in iPhoto.
Anytime I try to import I receive the following message:
'Unreadable file: The following files could not be imported (they may be unrecognized file type of the files may bot contain valid data)
Please tell me this can be fixed!!!

Hi todd,
Do you want to keep your library on the external as the library that iPhoto uses and imports into?
If you do, then just launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and choose to open another library. Navigate to the library on the external and choose it.
Now this is the library iPhoto uses. Is this something that you want to do?
When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
Open library
Navigate to where the library is on your computer and then choose it.

  • Can't load photos into iphoto 6

Have many hundreds of small Sony Mavica cd-r discs that will not import into iphoto and cannot be read by Preview. Disc is read by external Qfire cdrw drive and files are displayed on desktop but each time I try to open a .jpg photo file it states:"Couldn't open the file. It may be corrupt of a file format that Preview doesn't recognize." These discs work fine in a Sony Vaio but get the same results in both my new Imac and and older G5 with internal DVD drive. This same G5 connected to the Qfire drive operating on OS9.4 worked fine until I updated it to OS X 10. Any ideas as to why the discs won't open on the new IMac w/ OS X 10.4.9?

    Massbody:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. As I remember from posts a while ago those discs and formats are not compatible with the Mac. Do a search fror Sony Mavica here in the Mac forums and see what you find. I don't remember if any solution was found or discussed.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Cannot import jpg photos into iPhoto'09

Before posting, I tried to read previous posts and Google'd the issue, but I have not found a solution that works.
Someone sent us pictures from our recent trip to Disney World. I downloaded the pictures to a folder under the Download folder. The pictures come up fine in Preview. Here are the specs. for one of the pictures -- the Document type is JPEG image. File Size: 702KB, Image Size: 2048x1536 pixels, Image DPI: 144 pixels/inch, Color model: RGB, ColorSync profile: Adobe RGB 1998 (also tried Generic RGB and sRGB EIC61966-2.1).
When, I drag the photo to the iPhoto window, I get the error popup about Unreadable Files -- "The following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)
    I am running Mac OS 10.6.2 with iPhoto'09, version 8.1.1 (419).
    This is really frustrating!
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    George

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Download the Automator workflow application *+Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile+* from Toad's Cellar, unzip it, drop a couple of files on it (use backup copies) and see if those will import into iPhoto.

  • Problem Loading Photos into iPhoto

I recently started downloading my pictures from my digital camera into iPhoto 5. I don't like deleting the pictures from my memory card because I print them from my card and also download them to other computers. Every time I plug in my camera it goes through every single picture. Every time I tell it not to download duplicates and to apply this to every picture, but it takes a lot of time to go through the hundreds of pictures on my card before it gets to the 3 at the end that I want to download. Also, I don't want some of the pictures on my mac and delete them from iPhoto (because I don't know how to prevent it from downloading them in the first place), but the next time I plug in my camera it downloads them all over again! Are there ways to bypass these problems? Thanks!
By the way- my camera is the Canon Powershot A75

    hi newmacusers,
I download my photos with Image Capture (you can choose which images to download).
I then put them in a dated folder and import that folder into iPhoto. I keep all my dated folders of images till I have enough to burn them to DVD as a backup of just my images.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

I have 40 images, one song and wanted to make a quicktime movie and post for friends
Made the movie, 128 mb looks nice. (480x640) now I want to share it with friends. I tried to load it to my .mac public it get to the end uploading and locks up the computer. notthing is running, cant delete it it says its in use.. I did the same thing with Small size 240x180 its still 35mb
How can I make a movie with a song and share it
I cant run iDvd or iMovie I'm still on G4 with 1.2 ghz
myspace has a limit of 100mb and NO option for .mov (quicktime movie)
    help please

There are a couple of things you can do. One is to resize it during export from iPhoto to 320 x 240, a common size used for posting. Another is to use a video editor like VisualHub to reduce the size down to something more manageable. Possibly reducing the frame rate to 15 from 29 if it's at 29. Quicktime Pro can also resize movie files.
If you visit the iMovie or Quicktime forum you should find some more knowledgeable users in this area.

  • Getting my backed-up photos into iPhoto on the new external hard drive

I managed to use Time Machine to restore the back-up of my external hard drive (that died) to a new external hard drive, however, while I can see the .jpeg images that were in my original (ext. hard drive) iPhoto library on the new Passport Drive, they are no longer set up in an iPhoto library.  I might have confused the system because I had thought I needed a shell structure iPhoto library on the new hard drive, so I basically moved the new "budding" iPhoto library established on my iMac's internal hard drive to the Passport drive before restoring the Time Machine backup.  What I see now is 1. a 4GB iPhoto library existing on the internal drive.  2. an identical 4GB iPhoto library existing on the external Passport drive  and 3. a folder named Simpletech with the entire contents of the failed hard drive including all the photos from my original 54GB iPhoto library that resided on the old external hard drive, which are accessible as independent .jpeg files, but no longer organized as an iPhoto library.
Would love to know the steps to having just one iPhoto library on the Passport external hard drive that contains all my images without accidentally losing/deleting any images and messing up pointers.  I would not mind eliminating the iPhoto library on the internal hard drive either, provided I could get all the images into the main one.

while I can see the .jpeg images that were in my original (ext. hard drive) iPhoto library on the new Passport Drive
When you enter Time Machine and go to the Pictures folder do you not see the iPhoto Library in it at different dates?
If you used Time Machine to backup your hard drive then the iPhoto Library package should be in it.  If you did something different please explain in detail what you did.

  • Cannot drag photos into iPhoto '09

I just got a new MacBook Pro and I installed iPhoto '09 and I noticed something odd. I cannot drag photos into iPhoto to import them. I remembered in the previous version on my old MacBook Pro I was able to drag photos to the app (in the photo area) and it would import them. Now the only way dragging works is if I drag the photos to the iPhoto icon on the dock.
Anyone see this before? I think I might have some strange dragging problem because I can no longer drag attachments from Entourage and save them to folders I have to manually click the save button. I'm not sure if this is related. Thanks

It was my Helvetica and Helvetica Neue fonts. They got jacked some how. I moved them and then copied them back and then rebooted. That fixed it. I guess you used to be able to disable and renable them from font book but they were locked so I did it manually. Fixed it.

The best thing to do would be to start over. Use Setup Assistant this time.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • How can you take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in.

As the title says I need help on how to take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in. Right now when I want to move a picture from one event to another I drag it to my desktop then delete it from iPhoto then I drag it back into iPhoto and put where I want it.An example would be taking a photo from the Christmas event and add it to a specific person event.  Can I do that within the events section without all the dragging. Also is there anyway I can remove duplicates from iPhoto without going through each and every file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apple doesn't make it easy to do what you want.  However, here's how I do it.
Select the photo you want to move and create a new Event for it via the Event ➙ Create Event menu option.
In the Event mode select the new Event with the one picture and drag it onto the Event you want to move the photo to.

I have moved my iPhoto to an external hard drive. so now I have to have the external hard drive connected to my laptop to view the photos.  Now when I want to import photos into iPhoto from my media card, I don't have room to connect both devices at the same time as the usb ports are side by side.  How do I import my photos from the media card to the external hard drive now?

First transfer the photos to a folder on your MacBook using Image Capture in your Utilities folder. Then move them to iPhoto.
BTW, you might want to invest in a cheap USB hub.

  • I have imported a jpeg photo into iPhoto and cannot get the Places map to let me fix a position on the map. It remains disabled for my photo. Checking out the Help file has not given any solution.

I have imported a jpeg photo into iPhoto  and cannot get the Places map tp show. I have tried the Help file and the information was not helpful. Can anyone give advice here?

I am using iPhoto 9.1.1. When I select thephoto, then Places I get the window (Places to lookup disabled). When I hit theInfo button I get the size an JPEG notification, and  Faces and Key words. The “reverse” of thepicture shows a window with Rotate, Hide, Trash etc.
When I select Places, get the Google worldmap, and this case a pin on Sydney Australia showing that eighteen photos arecorrectly placed. I am unable to make the connection to San Francisco wherethis particular photo was taken on a very modern camera.

  • Should i delete my photos from iPhoto after I import to aperture

should i delete my photos from iPhoto after I import to aperture? What is the easiest way to do this?

    Depends.
Did you copy the files into the Aperture Library on Import?
If so, it's safe to do so. My tip: wait a few weeks until you're happy that you're committed to Aperture.
Drag the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the trash.

  • Importing photos into iPhoto from Hard Drive

Mike just downloaded our back up onto our newish Mac after our Macbook bravely went to it's grave in coffee.    I'm now trying to import about 100 - 200G of photos into iPhoto from my hard drive.  I really do not want to spend the whole time selecting and dragging these pictures.  All that I read so far says that is the only way to get them off your hard drive.  Some one please rescue me and tell me there is another way!  Unfortunately I have already started a new photo album with pictures from my iPhone, so I can't just start a new album with these pics.  Thanks for any help I can get. ~Kari A.

first off do not import an old library into iPhoto - it does not work
If you have an old library you simply drag it to the new computer and launch iPhoto while depressing the option key to get the select library window and then select it - repeat to select a different library
If you have just the photos (not =an iPhoto library) then simply drag the folder of photos to iPhoto
