Cannot reach boot selector screen

With OS 10-3-9, I selected a bad boot device. Now boot fails with msg Input not supported.
How do I get back to the boot selector screen to select the correct boot device? I have no 10.3 bootable disks.
The keyboard is connected via usb only.
This is on a Mac g4, 400 MHZ

What happens if you disconnect the unbootable disks?

  • HP MS218 Not Booting - Does not POST - Cannot reach BIOS

    Hello,
I have an MS218 (product number: BR372AA #ABA) that I have been having issues with. It used to work fine (ran on WinXP), but currently will not even boot properly at all. No software or hardware changes were made to cause this problem to begin occurring, it simply just started happening one day when I went to turn the computer back on. The issue that I am currently experiencing is as follows:
    - Power stays on, but nothing is ever displayed on the screen
    - Does not post, cannot reach BIOS
    - Acts almost as if it is resetting itself constantly, the fan in the back will start to spin for a second or two, then stop, then start again, and repeat indefinitely until I unplug the power adapter.
I initially figured it was a hardware issue, likely the motherboard, and began to troubleshoot the problem. As I removed non-vital components, the problem would persist. For instance, it happens regardless of external things (keyboard, mouse, etc.) being plugged in, or regardless of the hard drive or optical drive being plugged in. It still appears to happen in the absense of memory, however, I will instead hear beep codes (likely telling me that I don't have any RAM in). Ultimately, I decided to order a replacement motherboard, which recently arrived. Upon replacing the motherboard, the exact same problems happen, which leads me to believe that the motherboard was somehow not the culprit. I have also tried multiple power adapters to no avail, as well as resetting the CMOS battery without any luck. I'm really at a loss for what to do from here, and am currently sitting on hold with HP tech support.
Any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

    Hello Jaycera,
There are two more components that we haven't replaced or look at and I would approach them in the order listed.
    1. Power supply
    2. Processor
It sounds like it's a power issue the computer is getting enough power to start booting up and then losing it. Thus anytime I hear a power issue the first thing I think of is a power supply issue.
The other thing is it could be the processor. The computer starts booting, makes a call to the processor, fails, boots down, starts booting up, makes a call to the processor and here we are in a vicious cycle.
It could just be the processor needing reseated. Take it out, put it back in and make sure it's in properly and no pins are bent, or the processor could be bad.

Sounds like you may have a harddrive issue.  You are probably going to need to get that changed out and then install the OS X again to get it going.

  • Tecra S1 doesn't boot and hangs at (boot) splash screen

    Tecra S1 Model PT831E-107EQ-GR
Problems started a month ago. It randomly didn't booted. After some power off/on tries it finally booted and worked properly. Because it happened more often I've bought a new hard drive (Toshiba 40 GB). I've had Acronis True Image and planned to make a disk clone to the new drive. The problem is that a notebook now doesn't boot anymore so I cannot boot it from A CD nor hard drive. It stops at "In Touch..." logo with "Press [F12] for the boot device selection menu" text and doesn't react any key. I tried to boot with no CD, no hard drive - the same. I also connected internal HD using ATA-To-USB adapter - the same. Does it mean that's not a disk problem but motherboard or other components? Is it possible to enter BIOS before boot selection screen?
    Regards,
    Jacek

Problem solved. There was a broken PCB under the CPU socket. I've found that pressing with my finger and holding CPU while booting allowed to startup the system while releasing the finger caused system hanging and its total crash. Our local service tried to repair it but with no success. Finally two days ago we've found a working motherboard (a used one) for about 200 USD and now I'm waiting for installing it in the laptop. Th regular price for a new one (about 400 Euro) is too much, but 200 USD is OK. I do like the laptop because of its ports (LPT, RS232). It's used for programming and controlling some older devices. Newer laptops have no LPTs nor RS232s and it's not easy to find a working USB adapter because the software we're using is even from DOS times and has hard-coded IRQs for those ports.
Anyway, I hope it'll back from the service fresh and new, and of course working ;)
    Thank you for your tips.
    Regards,
    Jacek

  • How do I fix the GRAY boot-up screen with FLASHING QUESTION-mark FOLDER?

When I turn on the MacBook Pro laptop, I opened up the Safari Browser and its when the problem started. It was stuck on an loading infinite loop. I decided to force quit the application and/or turn off the mac by the Menu options, It did not work. So I did a "Hard" Shut-down and restarted the Mac, the Boot up screen stood gray for like a minute until the Flashing ? Folder icon showed up!.
My sister's laptop's warranty is expired so I wonder how can I fix it without having to spend too much money on a simple troubleshooting tip.
How can I download/create a boot-up Disk/Flash Drive so I can reset it to factory settings?
I cannot access the laptop because It's kind-of software bricked if you ask me. Also, I do not know how to check the Mac OS version outside of the "About Mac" menu. I do have another Mac which is a desktop computer with a CD drive.
I would appreciate some expertise on this issue a.s.a.p. Thank you!

    Ok, now I am stuck:
Why does my Mac boot its OS from the Flash Drive instead of the INTERNAL HARD DRIVE???a
If I start up my MacBook Pro, It will have the flashing question mark folder UNLESS i plug in the OS-Boot flash drive. When I at the desktop screen and work on a program, When I unplug the Flash drive, THE OS WILL CRASH AS IF I TOOK it's soul (OS x Lion) out of the body (MacBook Pro Laptop)
this is frustrating because when I did the INTERNET RECOVERY, When I install OS x Lion, the Flash Drive only show up as an option as opposed to the HDD.
I cannot format the hard-drive in DISK UTILITY because it's grayed out. This is just frustating. I never had problems with PC Windows OS recovery but this (Mac OS).

  • How to reformat '06 Macbook Pro - cannot reach desktop

I have a 2006 Macbook Pro. I try and boot it but I cannot reach the desktop. My plan is to try and reformat it with 10.6.7 Snow Lep or 10.7 Lion (does Lion work with '06 Macbook Pro's, how about Mountain Lion?)
But here is the issue. I cannot access the desktop and the DVD Drive is non-functioning. The obvious solution is to do a bootable USB drive (I have another newer Macbook Pro to do the setup) BUT... since I cannot access the desktop, how do I actually do the reformatting with the bootable USB?

Sorry, I'm a PC guy (don't kill me)
Oh, I didn't realize you weren't part of the club. I'm afraid I've said too much... now you must die!
Okay, on a more serious note, Lion may work okay, but memory requirements in Lion are significantly higher than in Snow Leopard, and that machine only has 2 GB of RAM (assuming it hasn't had more added). I wasn't able to run Lion well on a 2010 machine with 4 GB of RAM (it ran great after upgrading the RAM), after upgrading from Snow Leopard... but I may have been doing more memory-demanding tasks than your brother, so that may not be relevant. You could certainly try Lion and see what happens.

  • Holding option on boot does not bring up boot selection screen

Holding option on boot does not bring up the boot selection screen, the machine just boots from the previously selected startup drive.
    MBP 17 mid-2010.

I created a three partition drive on a Seagate GoFlex 1.5 TB drive.  GUID partition table.
Used SuperDuper to clone the drive.  Drive is bootable.  Booting from drive works using Startup Drive selector, so does not appear to be a drive issue.
I'm baffled.  What can I do to fix/troubleshoot?
    Peter

Are you using a Bluetooth keyboard by any chance, I see that same behaviour at times if so ?
I tend to select the desired boot volume with System Preferences/Startup Disc these days although option should work ...
I have noticed that if you reboot right away the option key often works the second time round which is odd.

  • T43 - Hangs on boot-up screen

    Dear all,
I have a 2668-45G Thinkpad T43 which just doesn't boot anymore. This laptop wasn't booted or charged for a long time before I got it. Warranty has run out just 1,5 months ago.
    Exact description:
    - Pressing Power-On button results to start-up the notebook. Boot-up screen is shown and nothing else happens.
    - No reaction if I press the "Access IBM" button or F1 at all. I cannot enter BIOS, nor is there any other reaction (no beeps, no error message, no num-lock-light switching).
Hard drive is turning, CD-ROM is preparing.
What did I try so far:
    - Take out battery and AC-cable, pressed power-on button 10 times for a longer time. Then I plugged the AC cable in and pushed F1 during power-on. Sometimes I come to the startup menu. But only rarely. And if I get there, again no reaction on key pressing.
    - I opened the laptop, if there is any visible problem. There isn't. After opening and closing, I could once switch to the BIOS, but there was no reaction to any further key pressing. So I could not reset the BIOS to some default state.
    - The laptops beeps though if I remove the memory module.
    What can I do now?
    Please help me.
    Best regards
    Laurence

Another shot in the dark...can you swap the CMOS battery with one from your R50?
If we don't have a BIOS that is messed-up (which is an unfortunate option) sheer persistance and attention to small details might get us somewhere...
My knowledge is really of little use right now, as is my experience. Personally, I'd keep the HD out, along with battery, wireless and BT cards and keep attempting to get it to boot in different intervals...not much science there, but that's the best I've got right now, I might be smarter a little later...or never...
Also, applying permanent pressure of a light nature on the spot where keyboard enters the planar as in couple of bent "post-it" sheets might be worth considering...
Good luck and keep us posted.
    Cheers,
    George

Hi! This seems to bee a common problem (i. e. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4094417?tstart=0) and i have it as well. As usual you can't get help here but a lot of inspiration
I recommend to upgrade the firmware using a LAN-connection and try it again. If it's stable keep it that way, if not return it to the store and get a new one.
Before of course make sure there is none of the following settings in your router:
    - MAC Adress based filtering allowing only specific clients to connect (unlikely)
    - no hidden SSID (wifi's name) (unlikely)
    - DHCP turned on. If not, your ATV has to have a fixed IP Adress (unlikely)
    - Password and Encryption mechanism is correct
It's 90% the devices fault in my opinion.

  • Cannot paste from "print screen" into document CS4

I have Photoshop CS4 and Windows 7 and cannot get a print screen copy to paste into a document. I have always been able to do this in the past, this is the first I have tried with CS4 and windows 7. It will paste into an email so I know the print screen button is functioning.
Does anyone how to resolve this. Thank you.

As per John's comment, I occasionally have this behavior on my laptop with XP-Pro and CS2. All will work fine for a dozen screen-caps, and then it ceases working. So far, I've never encountered this on my workstation. In general terms (things that might matter here), the only difference between the machines is that I have the 3 GB Switch on the workstation, but not on the laptop.
For me, Purging everything has no effect. Closing and re-launching PS clears it up though. I have had it re-occur in the second session, but not usually.
Both machines are very clean, regarding which programs and Processes are loaded at boot and running. What is left should not be sapping resources, but who knows? When this manifests itself, I often have PS and either PrPro, or PrElements, running, as those are often my sources for the screen-caps. In my case, maybe one, or the other, has some sort of memory leak. While editing, I have not observed such, and Task Manager does not show anything near extreme resource usage. Also, when I "cure" the issue by re-launching PS, I do not shut down the NLE programs.
    Just some observations,
    Hunt
BTW - many users on the Premiere fora also use, and recommend, SnagIt.

  • My iMac doesn't load past the start up white screen and doesn't reach the login screen.

I'm having issues trying to load my iMac up after i had to to shut it down the other day. when i start it up it makes the chirme
and reaches the white screen with the loading symbol but doesn't move on from there! Doesn't anyone know how to fix this to get to the login screen?

    Reinstall Lion.
    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Macbook Pro stuck on boot-up screen

When I woke up this morning, I found that my Macbook Pro has turned off while I was sleeping (I have it on constantly for convinence sake because it takes to darn long to boot-up), So I didn't think about it. Untill I found out that it would not boot on. Let me explain what happens
    1) Presses power button
    2) No boot-up sound
    3) Loads up Apple logo
    4) Shows update bar and loading wheel at bottom of the screen
    5) After a few seconds, the bar dissapears.
    6) After a second or two, the wheel stops turning.
    7) Macbook Pro boots off.
I would really like somebody to help me out.
Note: I've tried to go into safe mode, but it doesn't want to boot up from that mode either.

    ShadowofColosuss708,
you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the  OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it reach the login screen now?
