Cannot reach some websites problem and workaround

Hi, Problem: Through a linksys router, whether standard firmware or dd-wrt, the router allows some web pages to work, whereas others are inaccessible. They just hang and time out. Affects both wired and wireless. The router is the problem as evidenced that all web sites work fine when plugged directly into the internet, bypassing the router. I looked on several forums and the suggestions seemed to be things like: - modify your MTU value - check the firmware/upgrade - reset to the default settings The responses on these threads show most of these methods do not work. I have even seen some people replacing their boxes after talking to Linksys support about this issue. Anyway, I had this issue with V4 WRT-54G with dd-wrt.v23 SP2. What I did to stop the problem occuring was: disable dnsmasq I am not sure linksys standard firmware lets you disable dnsmasq? DNS masquerading is when your router clients will send their dns queries to the router, and the router will forward them on to the ISP dns server. With dnsmasq turned off, the clients will send their queries directly to the ISP dns themselves. I tried this after noticing that the web sites I could reach, I could not resolve through the router, whereas they resolved fine with the ISP's dns server. I also noticed that the sites that tended not to work were big sites that have things like akamai on the back like windowsupdate. So now the clients are sending their DNS queries directly to the ISP dns, and opendns as backup. And that works fine. I wish I had come accross a post like this several hours of troubleshooting back.

When you logon to a site using a username and password that information is saved to the Keychain Access application.

I'm asking for your help about a problem I have been struggling with for about a month.
Background information:
- 3 client computers (2 on Windows Seven, 1 on XP),
- 1 Windows 2012 server (AD service active)
- ASA 5505 router for the WAN connection (Orange as provider)
- PPPoe Authentication used with DSL provider box set in modem mode
Problem:
All clients except ONE (on Windows seven) have problems to reach some websites. Some work well, but for others, it keeps waiting for the connection until a timeout error message.
The clients affected are also unable to update the virus database.
Using an anonymizer service as anype.com, I can finally reach the websites that timed out...
The affected clients use the same DHCP as the one that works.
Sending a ping from the affected clients to the unusable websites gives the good ip adress.
Using an external laptop which works well on another network on this network gives the same symptoms.
I can see no configuration differences between clients and even reinstalled one of them from scratch without more success.
Did someone experienced this kind of problem? I'm running out of ideas!!!

PPPoE will add 8 bytes and IPsec VPN will add as much as 80 bytes to the original packet. So the packet will be larger than MTU down the path between client and server. but those packets maybe set df-bit, so ICMP type 3 code 4 (packet need fragment but df-bit set)will send back to the originator, but sometimes it can not reach the originator due to FW block or ACL or packet drop. so the connection will be timeout.
Workaround: configure 'ip tcp adjust-mss 1360' on WAN router (here FW), make sure all the WEB access can work, then you can increase 1360 to bigger number until you reach a balance.
Some WEB server did not honor MSS advertised by client side during TCP 3-way handshaking, it will result in packet from server side will need to be fragmented down the path to client, if DF-bit set, it also cause session timeout.

Go step by step by step and test.
1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
    Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
    Restart the computer.
    Start up in Safe Mode.

2. Delete Caches.db
    Close all windows and quit all applications.
    Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
    Select "Library" from the dropdown.
    Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari > Caches.db
    Right click the Caches.db file and select "Move To Trash.
    Close windows and relaunch Safari.
3. Empty Caches
    Safari > Preference > Advanced
    Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
    Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
    Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
4. Delete Cookies
    Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:
    Click “Remove All Website Data”.
5. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
    Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.
    Turn on those one by one and test.

Cannot access some websites

Hello!
I have the strangest thing happening - I cannot access some of my web sites directly via Safari (or Firefox for that matter), whereas the whole world can.
Also when I try to connect via proxify, I can access it fine.
www.network-tool.com tells me the site is online fine.
Why can I not access it?
It's driving me nuts.
Thanks for any ideas to solve this problem.
Note: brand new Mac, clear caches, etc.
One thing I need to add is that the worst part of this is that I don't get emails either from that domain. Only once every 1-2 days do I get all emails at once.

Intel version's Safari cannot display some website's photos (but PPC cannt)

The Safari (Intel) is not able to display graphics/photos in some websites, (like http://www.fotop.net).
but if running the safari in rosetta mode, it will able to display so.
Can any one help to know want happened?

This MacOSX Hints page shows how to enable the debug menu, which also allows you to change the user agent.
Since the site works fine on Safari 2.0.3 ( 417.9.2) for me, I'd say that the website simply need to update their User Agent identification info to account for the latest versions. But hey - just tell both partys.
Hopefully someone else here with an Intel Mac can confirm if the site works for them.

WRT600n difficulties after reset/trouble reaching some websites generally.

I am using my WRT600N as a second wireless access point. By this I mean, I have a primary router that is connected to the ISP via the DSL jack. I get the internet connection through that router piped through an ethernet port.
I have had difficult-to-troubleshoot connectivity problems with the devices connected through the WRT, both wirelessly and hardwired to it. While devices connected to the primary router have no such problems, I cannot connect to an odd variety of sites: for instance, cannot go to ebay login, or to the NY Post's Page Six (one is https one not).
In order to address these matters, I did a reset 30-30-30 style (although I didn't find 30-30-30 to make much difference). I did it a couple times!!
I had assumed this would reset the WRT's IP address. I had it at 192.168.0.2 to work with the primary (which is a Dlink). After the reset, I tried to login at 192.168.1.1: is this not the WRT's default admin login? Neither http nor https in a machine directly cabled to the WRT gets me anything (nor does 192.168.0.2).
So, question 1, where do you reckon my admin login is now, please?
Oddly, the wired devices to the WRT work PRECISELY as they did before the reset, with the same oddly-unreachable websites. Wireless was, of course, knocked out when I did the reset, and will be until I can figure out how to get to the console.
Question 2, what do you think about having unreachable websites? WRT had the same subnet mask as primary before reset, and I suspect it still has. Wired devices are assigned IPs and use the primary as a gateway as per instructions here: http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1575/using_an_old_router_as_a_diy_wireless_access_point/index3.htm...

As you are unable to access certain websites out of which some are secured websites .
I think you can try to reduce the security settings medium-level on your Internet Explorer .
Also make sure the port 443 is opened on the router .
What is the current firmware version on your router ?

Plugin-container in Firefox 4; High CPU and Graphics Switching Problems and Workaround

I recently upgraded to Firefox 4, and unfortunately, I've had many problems running Firefox under OSX on my Macbook Pro.
The first problem I came across was that Firefox is now hardware accelerated. This should be a good thing, but due to the way Apple has implemented graphics switching, Firefox caused the discreet graphics card to be used (as seen with GFXcardstatus)
To prevent this, I went into preferences, and disabled "Use hardware acceleration where available" under Advanced>General.
But my problems didn't stop there. Now, it seems Firefox has decided to run plugins such as flash under a separate process called plugin-container in order to protect the browser from plugin crashes. This is a good idea (I believe Chrome and Safari do the same), but even with hardware acceleration disabled in Firefox and Flash, plugin-container still triggered the discreet graphics.
This would actually be acceptable if plugin-container was terminated after I navigated away from the page with the flash content, but this is not what happens. Instead, plugin-container keeps using the high-powered GPU until Firefox is closed.
At this point, I thought that I'd try to force the computer to only use integrated graphics (using gfxcardstatus), but then I discovered another problem:
The plugin-container process was using large amounts of CPU time when flash content was visible in the Firefox window. Typically, viewing just a static flash ad would cause plugin-container to use about 60% (in addition to firefox using about 20%, that means 80% total). Obviously, this was a battery life problem.
After all of this I think I found a temporary workaround, but there are clearly problems here that need to be resolved by the Firefox developers. There are many non tech-savvy users who are no doubt experiencing poor battery life from these problems.

When I have my mail turned off on my Iphone 3GS, I cannot then just touch the phone number of a contact and get it to dial. I leave my mail turned off frequently because of all the spam that comes in. Seems I should be able to touch dial all contacts regardless whether my mail is turned on or not. This does not occur with all contacts but some. Very irritating.

The "streaming" in iOS 6 is not traditional streaming. When a song is played it is also cached in a non-permanent storage on the iPhone. As you play music older songs will be deleted or you can delete all the music at once by going to Settings > General > Usage, tapping Music, then swiping across "all music" and tapping the delete button.

HELP! My iPod has some major problems and the warranty just ended!

My 20 GB iPod is about a year old since I got it for Christmas last year. I have never had any problems with it. Now about a week ago it went completely haywire.
It started when I went to play some songs. They would play for a few seconds and then it would freeze. It then got to the point where the songs would remain on 0 seconds, not playing. I tried doing the reset thing suggested on Support, but it just made things a whole lot worse.
Now, whenever the iPod turns on the Apple logo appears and then it goes straight to the folder with an exclaimation point. The hard drive also makes strange noises like it is booting up and then it makes strange clinking noises. Trying everything, I decided that I would hook it up to my pc and do a restore. Well, the Do Not Disconnect screen appeared on my iPod but nothing happened on my pc. It wouldn't recognize the iPod.
I was just wondering what could have possibly happened since it has worked fine for a year. The only things I could think are the new iPod update (11-17) that I decided to use about two or three weeks ago. Maybe the cold temperatures had something to do with it? Maybe I just need a new battery?
Should I take the iPod to my local Apple store? I don't know if it would be worth getting it repaired at a cost of over $250.

Corey, I just had the exact thing happen to me today. I've spent hours toying with it by following all of the recommendations on the support site - no progress.
I didn't do the software update prior to the problem occurring, so I'll bet that has nothing to do with it.
Do you have any other ipods running off of the same PC? My wife recently installed her nano on this same PC.
It did dawn on me that the problem started on Jan 1, but it might just be coincidence - I'm like you - I'll take any clues.
I get one break, though. Mine was purchased 10 months ago.

This has been known for at least 18 months, What are they paying these email app programmers for? They should have set up their headers according to the spec in the first place, but leaving it unfixed for this long shows even more than the normal incompetence of both programmers and supervisors.
It appears that both the gmail app and K9 Mail have their act together in this area since email from each of them is received OK.
Anyway, now I can keep my Charge (with those apps). This was a critical constraint since I need to be able to send out valid email.
(I am not marking this as solved since the default app is still broken.)

At this time, I can't seem to determine an alternate way besides moving the "cabinet" items to the inbox.
Upon further research, it appears as though you may be able to install a 3rd party application.

You may even be able to ask the application developers if their product will be able to do what you are looking for.

My new budget box: some USB problems, and CPU multiplier question

hey, just put together my "new" pc for $130! had some old stuff to put in it, specs are:
msi k7n2 delta2-lsr
athlon xp 2800+ 333mhz barton
(the rest here is old stuff that's still running fine)
crucial ram: 1x 512, 1x256, both 266mhzl
160gb maxtor hd
radeon all-in-wonder 7500
sound blaster audigy
case (2 fans plus an air duct leading to the processor)w/350w power supply,
it's mainly for an entertainment center, going in/out to/from a 5.1 reciever, tv, dvd player, the works.
maybe some light gaming too, nothing harder to run than halo.
i had to reuse the d-bracket from my old k7n266 board, the new one didn't come with one. :(
and for some reason its usb ports do not work: neither do my two front usb ports that are built
into the case. the onboard ports all seem to work, andwindows shows in device manager:
standard enhanced pci to usb controller (x1),
standard openhcd usb host controller (x2),
and usb root hub (x3). pretty sure that means they all should work? i've swapped the plugs
around with no luck anyway. i was mainly wondering if there's some bios setting i've overlooked
to get these working, if not, anyone have any other ideas?
also wondering where i should set my cpu multiplier, i generally understand that it's 166mhz *12.5 with
this processor, does that sound about right? i haven't set the muliplier yet in the bios, i just left it at
"cpu default". i'm waiting to get a new cpu fan before i mess with that. i was wondering if my admittedly
slow ram is at risk with either of these settings, i'm not looking to buy more anytime soon (my laptop
is my "real" computer anyway, handles doom3 pretty well). actually i'm kind of confused on the
motherboard's fsb: it's supposed to be 400mhz, but it only goes up to 200 settable in bios? or is that
400mhz calculated only in windows, when you get the nforce2 drivers going?

CPU multipliers on the bartons are locked. You need to do a mod to be able to change it.
With your memory being 266MHz that will hold you back. You may be able to overclock it so it is running the 333MHz but your system may become unstable. You may want to consider getting PC2700 memory or better.
As far as the USB, make sure you do not have pin 10 plugged in (there is no connector for pin 9). There are some topics talking about this. Just do a quick search. Or as phextor mentioned there are some stickys about it. Read through them and try the suggestions, if that doesn't work post back and we will try to get it taken care of. As far as bios settings on some I know there is an option on how many USB ports are in the system. This is usually under integrated peripherals. Make sure it is at 8 ports or all.
