Cannot read backup file from PC on Mac

I am trying to move my Photoshop Elements 9 catalog from my PC to my Mac.
I have backed up the catalog to an external HDD but when I connect it to the Mac I can see the folder but I cannot open it. The backup is big, over 200GB, could this be the problem? I have several other backups on the same HDD but the MAC cannot read any of them.
I can open the folders without any problem on a PC.
I took the HDD to a Mac "Genius Bar" and they could not open the folders on their Mac either and had no idea what could be causing the problem.
I had no problem migrating to the Mac about a year ago when I first got it, but I suppose the backup would have been smaller then.
Has anybody got any idea what the problem could be

In the Backup folder, there is a Backup.tly file which needs to be specifically seleted while restoring the backup. So while you go for File >Restore catalog > try to choose All files from the format dropdown to see this tly file.

    Migration Assistant (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant) is the tool that you would use to restore backups from older Macs to another Mac.
    Details are here:   http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html   The same info applies for Mavericks and Yosemite.   If you are saying that this is a "no go".....where are you getting stuck?  What error messages do you see?

  • Cannot open backup files from Seagate drive

    My original plan was the backup my files before upgrading my iMac from OS Tiger 10.4 to the current version of 10.6.3 (now .8 after updates).
    I bought a Seagate external drive to backup my personal documents (.doc, .jpg's, .pdf's) on Tiger. After successfully installing Snow Leopard, the files won't open. A message saying it cannot open it. All my html files I created come up gibberish.
    BUT the backup files on the drive are all fine and all show up. The backup drive works totally fine. Is it because of the OS upgrade? IF i went back to Tiger will this work???

    After successfully installing Snow Leopard, the files won't open. A message saying it cannot open it. All my html files I created come up gibberish.
    Do you have versions of software that run on Snow Leopard to open these files? If the applications were upgraded for Snow Leopard (vs. a new version issued after Snow Leopard came out), you may need to upgarde various application to open those files. What's the exact wording of the message you get?
    But the backup files on the drive are all fine and all show up. The backup drive works totally fine.
    That just indicates there's no problem with the files, but it still doesn't eliminate the possibility of you needing to upgrade some software to open the files. Check that first; that's always going to be a factor in deciding to upgrade OS X, since it could cost quite a bit.
    If that's not a problem, then it could indicate a problem with installing Snow Leopard, in which case you can try reinstalling it. Before you do that, you should try creating a new user account on that machine and testing to see if you can open any of those files without a problem. If you can, that indicates the problem is specific to your regular account, and not a system issue.
    As for your backup, how did you create it: with SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner, or similar software, or did you just do a Finder copy from the Mac to the bacup drive?

  • Recovery Manager is failing to read backup files from disc

    Product Name:
    HP G56-129WM
    Operating System:
    Windows 7
    I used the HP Recovery Manager (F11) to backup my files instead of using the Windows backup. The HP Recovery Manager back uped my files on 2 dvd discs. I then restored my laptop to factory settings. When I go to restore my files, it will only go to 40% and then ask me to insert backup DISC 2. When I insert the disc, it fails to read it. The disc pops out and I keep getting a request to insert DISC 2. What is going on?
    This question was solved.

    I have a related but different issue with file back-up using HP recovery manager.
    I have a Pavilion g7-1070us laptop that failed to start and simply displays a blue-screen with a blinking cursor (no error message). I could NOT get into safe-mode by hitting F8, but was able to activate the “HP recovery manager” by hitting F11. I was trying to back-up my files before triggering the system restore. It asked me what types of files to back-up, then scanned the computer for these files and was finalizing the files for back-up; then suddenly an error message showed up saying something like "No storage device detected. Make sure the removable disc drive is connected to computer". But I have both a DVD sitting in the optical drive and a USB drive attached!!!!!! Apparently the recovery manager doesn’t see them?
    Can someone throw me a life-saver here? If I cannot recover my files, I cannot proceed with the system restore and I am forever stuck here!!!!!!
    Please help!!!! Much appreciated!!

  • Cannot read Property file from JSP in a Web Module Project

    I have tried to read the properties file in two ways but am not able to read it because i cannot find the correct path of the properties file.
    1st Method :
    Properties props = new Properties();
    InputStream is =
    application.getResourceAsStream(
    "test.properties");
    if (is != null) {
    props.load(is);
    is.close();
    Enumeration keysEnum = Props.propertyNames();
    while (keysEnum.hasMoreElements()) {
    out.println(keysEnum.nextElement()) ;
    2nd Method :
    Here "com.sap.package" is the package name and "test" is the Properties file name
    ResourceBundlebundle = ResourceBundle.getBundle("com.sap.package.test");
    for (Enumeration e = bundle.getKeys(); e.hasMoreElements();)
    String key = (String) e.nextElement();
    out.print((String) e.nextElement());
    String s = bundle.getString(key);
    request.getComponentSession().putValue(key, s);
    I cannot read the properties file even when I keep in it the WEB-INF folder.

    Properties props = new Properties();
    InputStream is = this.class.getClassLoader().getResourceAsStream(/test.properties);
    if(is != null){
    props.load(is);
    Keep the test.properties in the classes folder under the web-inf folder.
    Thanks,

  • Elements 10, cannot read cr2 files from EOS 6D, anyone else have this issue?

    Sorry my discussion topic is my question. Followed by if so, how did you fix it or what suggestions do you have? Thank you.

    You need PSE11 or PSE12 for the 6D. You may wish to wait to upgrade to the forthcoming PSE13. Or consider the Photography Plan – Lightroom + full Photoshop for $9.99 pm (or local currency.)Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your CR2 files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in PSE10(keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
    Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
    Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
    You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • When will we be able to read NEF files from a NIKON 5200?

    Just got a Nikon D5200. Photoshop and Bridge cannot read NEF files from this camera. It worked fine with my D3100 camera. When will we be able to read NEF files from a NIKON 5200?

    Welcome to the forum!
    As often, we cannot give a simple answer without more informations: what version of Photoshop and Bridge are you talking about?
    The rule of thumb is to update Camera Raw to the latests version compatible with Photoshop, and if it does not work, to download the last version of the DNG converter and use it on the files to convert them to DNG that can be opened in the older versions of Camera Raw and other raw converters.
    Normally, to update go to Help>Updates...
    According to http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.htmlhe first version of Camera Raw that can open the NEF from the 5200 is Camera Raw 7.3, that works with Photoshop CS6. If you version of Photoshop is older, you'll need to use the DNG converter 7.4:
    (but, since you don't state what operating system you are using, here are the links for both versions:
    PC http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows
    Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintosh )

  • Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?

    Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?  I have been having problems with my Macbook Pro not starting up.  I need to figure out how to access files with my PPC Desktop; if possible.
    What type of files can I access and what type I cannot?
    My Macbook Pro: MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 750GB HD, 2.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM
    My PPC: Power mac G4/Upgraded 1.2GHZ /800+RAM/3 HD =400+ GB, Mac OS X (10.4.2)
    Thanks in advance,
    God bless

    You will need software that is compatible with the data files on the backup drive, ie. if they are .doc files you will need Word (or a substitute).
    You don't mention what type of files are on the drive so it is hard to be specific.

  • I transferred a pages file from ipad to mac (also pages) via email for editing. However received message that cannot save edited document to the mac because "trial period has expired for iwork"! I have purchased pages for both machines separately. Ideas?

    I transferred a pages file from ipad to mac (also pages) via email for editing. It opened normally. However, after editing, received message that cannot save edited document to the mac because "trial period has expired for iwork"! I have purchased pages for both machines separately and presumed they would work without a hitch. Am I missing something?

    It used to be that to update the trial to the licensed version with the box, you just inserted the DVD & ran the installer to convert the trial to licensed. This changed with Snow Leopard. You now need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
    Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his iDisk in For_iWork > iWork '09 > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

    I want to use it for backing up my Mac.
    It's good for that . . .
    But also I don't keep all my stuff in my Mac.
    But not for that.
    This older and not day-by-day usage files I want to store in the time machine.
    You can do that (see below), but how are you going to back them up?   If your only copies are on the TC, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing your only copy of the data.
    Is it possible to split TC in two partitions.
    No, but there are some workarounds, including making a fixed-size disk image on it to "reserve" some space.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
    But you still won't have backups of the stuff you put there.
    You don't say what kind of Mac you have.  If it's a desktop model, just keep the external HD connected to it, and let Time Machine back it up along with your internal HD.
    However, it sounds like you may have a laptop, where that's not going to be convenient.  In that case, your best bet might be to copy the external HD to a disk image on the TC as above, then keep the HD in a safe place.
    To finish, when i enter the TC and go through the Time line how can I get a file from there and move it back to Mac hd.
    Via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
    You might also want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse the rest of the FAQ.

    Generally when creating a Word file from either a Mac or Win7 pc and opening it on two different machines (either one first) it always prompts that the file is open and will be opened as read only.
    However opening a CSS file does not prompt that it is already open on or from any machine which is causing code edits to be lost.
    What we found from out testing:
    - The file can be saved from one user to the server and WILL NOT PROMPT on other machines until the saving machine has the Dreamweaver program closed completely
    - The file can be closed and  Dreamweaver minimised to the launch bar but it still will not register on other machines that it has been changed.
    - Also, until the  Dreamweaver program is closed on the machines, it will continue to open it's saved version of the file.
    Example Scenario:
    - User 1 opens test.css (which is 2000 lines) and adds some code to the end of the file to bring it up to 2500 lines
    - Meanwhile User 2 opens test.css as well (opens as 2000 lines as User 1’s edits have not yet been saved) and adds in code to bring it to 2300 lines
    - User 1 saves his file and closes it - but  Dreamweaver is still open.
    - User 2 also saves his file and leaves  Dreamweaver  open.
    - The server will report the size and last edit of the file the same as User 2 as he was the last person to save it (and if you open from the Win7 Machine it will show as User 2’s 2300 line version)
    - If User 1 then open's the file again (from either the 'recent' in Dreamweaver OR clicking on the file directly in Finder...which version opens.... The version that User 1 saved! Not the true version on the server, but the version that User 1 edited and saved with 2500 lines in it.
    - Same for User 2, he will open 'his' version with 2300 lines in.
    Other information:
    - Files are opened directly from the server
    - Sometimes the users will save incrementally and re-open
    - Most of the time users will save incrementally and keep the files open
    - The users will never not save incrementally and just save when closing the file once finished
    - The users are usually working on the files all day
    - It is always the bottom lines of code that are lost. It could be a case of the two versions being mixed up and cutting off the newly added lines based on the line count (possibly).
    It is as if Dreamweaver is holding a cache of the version locally and then only properly looking back to the server when it has been completely closed. It is very difficult to see how the server is causing such an impact on these files, there are very few logs which are giving any indication to the root cause of the problems.
    Anyone know if this is a known issue?
    Is there a way that there can be a featured implemented on the server that doesn't allow another user to open a file if it is already open on another machine?
    Thanks

    Your server file handling has nothing, and really nothing to do with Adobe software. If files don't get locked for (over-)writing and/or lose connection to the program opening them, then your server is misconfigured. It's as plain and simple and that. Anything from "known file types"/ file associations not being set correctly, MIME types being botched, crooked user privileges and file permissions, missing Mac server extensions, delayed file writing on the server, generic network timeout issues and what have you. Either way, you have written a longwinded post with no real value since you haven't bothered to provide any proper technical info, most notably about the alleged server. Either way, the only way you can "fix" it is by straightening out your server and network configuration, not some magic switch in Adobe's software.

Why is upgrading software iPhoto such a pain. I've gotta get a presentation done and all I get for my money is roadblock!!!

    hello, it sounds like the library is damaged.
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I cannot open pdf files from one supplier when using Adobe Reader but I can using another Viewer

    I cannot open pdf files from one supplier when using Adobe Reader but I can open it if using Google PDF viewer or another viewer. The Adobe reader gives the error "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired" when I try to open the file. The version of Adobe Reader is 10.1.7, however I have tried other versions and they all fail the same way.  I have tested on a number of different PC's in different networks and all fail using Adobe Reader but work using alternate viewer. Also the PC's will open a PDF from any other source.

    Newer Reader versions are more strict than older versions (and other PDF viewers).  If certain minimum requirements are not met, Reader will tell you that the PDF is damaged.  This can happen when a document was created with software that does not adhere to PDF standards, or when the file was damaged during a download or email transmission.
    You should contact the creator of these PDFs.

  • I've transfered my backup files from an external hard drive to my Mac; how do I get combine the two "users" on my Mac so I only have one?

    I've had to re-install my backup files from to my MacBookPro after a software repair wiped out all my data. Now I have two Users identities on my laptop. Is there a way to combine them or get rid of one?

    Drag one account's home folder to the other account's desktop, open the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences, and delete that account.
