Cannot read DVD's on PC.

I have tried burning a few DVD's from my iMac G5 and the burn process seems to work ok. I can eject and insert the new DVD and all looks good. Now when i take this DVD to an XP machine there is nothing on it ? Is there anything i need to do when buring a data DVD to make it readable via a Windows Machine ?

when buring a data DVD
iDVD makes video DVDs, not data DVDs.

  • Cannot read DVD+R with GWA 4080M firmware AA26 (macbook pro 1.1)

    Hi everybody,
I have a macbook pro 1.1 with a drive GWA 4080M (firmware AA26). Since a few weeks I cannot read anymore some DVD+R (Sony DVD+R media code D21).
    1) One of these media burned with my other macbook pro (2.2 drive Matshita UJ-857D firmware KCVB) using the finder (so ISO9660,joliet,UDF and mode 1, booktype DVD-ROM) cannot be read on the MBP 1.1 - The same DVD is properly read on other mac or PC even on my old dell PC of 2003). I used the finder to burn it.
    2) The very same media burn (data), burned using the finder as well, are read if burned by an other burner (Mac quad core, with SONY DVD RW DW-D150G). The disk seems to be similar (ISO9660,joliet,UDF, mode 1, booktype to DVD-ROM).
Actually the bitsetting (I learn what it was from wikipedia yesterday) seems to be done by default on mac (both of the burner).
    3) A DVD+R (still same media) is burned properly on the MBP 1.1 with GWA 4080M drive, and readable everywhere.
    4) The Matshita UJ-857D has not received the superdrive 2.1 update (if applicable, that seems to triggers problems). I experience no problem in burning or reading with this drive except this one.
I tried to reset the I repaired the permissions (there was nothing to be done anyway), I also reset PRAM and NVRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238)
    and SMC
    (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319)
    and it did not helps
Last point the problem is the same under windows (bootcamp) and mac!
I would be very grateful if someone has a suggestion to fix or at least!
    Thank you in advance

  • Satellite A20-130: SD R2412 cannot read DVDs burnt in certain optical drives

    Hi,
I've got a Satellite A20-130 laptop, running WinXP and Ununtu Dapper in a dual partition. My 2nd laptop is not Toshiba one. When I burned DVDs (DVD+R) with my non-Toshiba laptop and played them in my Satellite it all worked fine.
However, when I bought a new optical drive for my 2nd laptop my Toshiba suddenly stopped playing the DVDs burnt in this new optical drive(I was using exactly the same disc brand and format as before-- DVD+R). I tried the old DVDs (the ones burnt in the laptop before the optical drive hardware was upgraded) and they can still by read perfectly fine.
This problem applies to both Ubuntu and WinXP. Support from 2nd laptop says this sounds like a firmware problem with my Toshiba. I updated the driver for my SD R2412 Toshiba optical drive (which, according to the file manual, seems to fix a DVD-Ram compatibility issue). Now the drive occasionally reads some of the new burned DVDs (after making loads of noise and waiting for ages), but more often than not I get an error message saying the device cannot be read because the format is incorrect or the device needs to be formatted.
This non-Toshiba laptop reads the DVDs it burns using the upgraded optical drive perfectly fine.

    Hi
Satellite A20 is pretty old notebook model and after intensive usage it can be that drive is more sensitive. If all this happen occasionally there is no simply explanation why this happen.
I know it is pretty annoying but I do not see any magic solution. At the end you must test it with brand new drive.

    Dear Expert
My DVD driver cannot DVD. The DVD driver icon in "My Computer" does not show the name of the DVD and when clicked, shows "no DVD inserted".
    But it can read CD.
Thanks very much for your help and advice in advance,

there is a possibility that the laser associated with the DVD reader is no longer functional, while your CD reader laser still is, as these two lasers are different.

  • HELP! Cannot read DVDs

Burnt two of the same DVDs with G5 and iDVD 6, made with iMovie and then iDVD 6 like many times before.
Tried to read them with G5 and home DVD player, but getting error messages, DVD cannot be read!
BUT: My iBook G3 can read the latest burnt DVD!
    What is happening?

    Hi Fanny
Welcome to apple discussions. Have you recently switched brands of DVD. Tell us which types of DVD's you are using. Verbatim DVD-R Minus 4x is the media of choice and is what many will recommend on apple discussions.

  • T61p cannot read DVD-RAM

I made some back ups last year on destop using DVD RAM discs. Now back on my T61p, the discs are not read. I tried a new DVD-RAM disc and find no way to have the drive recognize them.
Is this normal or is it possible that my drive is toast?

    Hello,
In this Lenovo support article, it states some types of UDF-formatted discs require that additional Drive Letter Access software be installed when running older versions of Microsoft Windows.  Could you tell us more about which version of Microsoft Windows was on the ThinkPad T61p when the DVD-RAM discs were created, what tool(s) were used to back up the files, and which version of Microsoft Windows is now installed on the T61p?
Also, were the discs readable at some point by the T61p, but ceased to be accessible?
Knowing the answer to these will be helpful in determining how to further troubleshoot the issue.

  • Optical drive cannot read DVD-RW after burning?

All of a sudden my built-in optical drive (Matshita UJ-857) appears to have lost the ability to mount burned DVD-RWs. I'm using Sony 1-2x media which burn & verify successfully. Following the burn, the DVD-RWs show up on the Desktop and can be browsed in Finder. However, once ejected, the drive cannot mount them again - they spin up for around 30 seconds before being ejected.
Other media (DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, CD, CD-R & CD-RW) work fine; DVD+RW requires 2~3 inserts before it mounts. I've done PRAM & PMU reset, same results. Is my drive failing?

I can view the same disk/photos on my old L300
There are any number of special so-called packet writing programs which create discs readable only by the same program. If you use the built-in DVD burning for Windows Vista (especially with Mastered format), that problem would not occur.
       Burn a CD or DVD
So you should either reburn the DVDs using the Vista machine or copy the pictures to the new machine (probably over your network) and burn new DVDs from there.
When you post here, always tell us the full model designation of your computers. Which Satellite Pro L330? Which Satellite Pro C660? That way we can look up what your machines look like.

  • My G5 cannot read DVD-R, 4.7G discs

I know it's an older model with an older Superdrive, but is there anything that I can do any programs I can download that can change it?

Awrite, here's what i've done to reanimate my defunct DVD player. First i insert a DVD and as usual, nothing happened. Just testing, tried out a Jethro CD, worked fine. Ian back in the box, now with the DVD inside the drive. Silent as a grave. So, i run the dvd player software and the Toast Titanium. Ask for disk information, no CD in the tray, was the answer. Ok, open the tray, disc info. Answer: The tray is open. Close the tray in the keyboard. Well a this point i was annoyed because never an apple DVD worked properly for me (and i am mac user since 1988) and i never found a satisfactory answer regard DVD support from mother Apple who provide us with these magnificent machines but never follow the discussions to see if we users are happy. Well, i keep asking, info and open and closing the poor tray driving my anger in this catharsis when suddenly the Dvd player software started play the movie. So, i cancel the info in Toast, quit the program and watch finally the Dvd. I think i have irritated the drive so bad that it decided to wake up, it worked this time but i don't know about the next one. True story. Better Solution? External DVD burner.

  • Cannot read DVD

It probably does not have to do anything with the software, but my MacBook Pro does not read the DVD. Any suggestions?

Try turning off the computer and shooting compressed air into the CD drive (use a compressed air can, or 60psi on a compressor.) Then turn the computer back on and try your DVD again. It took me 3 or 4 tries, but it eventually worked like a charm. (NOTE: If you leave your computer on while you do this, you may hit a shock switch, which will cause your drive to act "broken". If this happens, power off the hard ware and power it back on, and It should work again.)
    Hope this helped!

  • Reading dvd-r on Macbook Pro

Cannot read DVD-R on my Mac.... any ideas?

    A brief update:
I dropped my computer off to FedEx on Thurs. evening (6:30 pm) and received it back on Sat. morning (8:30 am). That was incredibly fast!
Anyway, the following parts were replaced.
    - ODD Super Drive (Symptom: Optical Drive Read/Write Data Error)
    - Main Logic Board 2.4Ghz (Symptom: Sensors Test Failed)
    - Optical Cable (Symptom: Drive Read/Write Data Error)
Moral of the story: if a Genius finds a "work-around" a the problem rather than trying to determine the actual cause of the problem, call AppleCare. Do not be afraid to speak with a Senior Manager (because, in my cause, the normal AppleCare technician didn't think anything was wrong.)
Thanks again for your all help.

  • Reading DVDs in Windows Vista

    Hi,
I have installed Windows Vista on my Macbook, and I can't read DVDs while I am on WIndows. However, I can read CDs, so I'd like to know how to read DVDs on Windows.
    Thanks for you help!

    Benji121:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
In response to your post above, I have a few questions for you so that I am clear on what I am addressing.
    1. Which version of Windows Vista have you installed?
    2. When you state that Vista cannot read DVDs, does that mean it cannot read the DVDs file content at all OR does it mean that you cannot PLAY DVD movies etc?
_If you have installed Windows Vista Basic and/or your answer to my Question #2 above is that your DVD player *CANNOT PLAY* Movies *but CAN* read the file directory then and only then do the following:_
    1. Download Vista Codecs from *[_THIS SITE_|http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/Ad vanced-Vista-Codec-Package.shtml]*
    2. Run the downloaded file and install the codecs
You see if your Vista is the Basic version then it does not come with the Video Codecs that are necessary to play media content. The above download and installation should solve that issue.
Please note that If you have a different version of Vista then you may have a completely different issue.

  • Cannot Read Files off CD/DVD Drive

I realize there are several similarly titled posts on this topic, but I have not found the problem I have.  Computer: Pavilion tx2000CTO.  O/S:  Vista Home Premium (all updates current).
Issue:  Some CD's and DVD's cannot be read completely.  I CAN navigate the directory structure.  I CAN see the files.  I CANNOT open them.  When I attempt to open from the DVD drive, nothing happens.  No errors or other messages.  When I attempt to copy to the HDD, I get the error "cannot read from the source file or disk".  This does not happen on all disks, but I cannot find any pattern between when i can or cannot read.  All of these disks are readable on other systems.
Note:  similar for media files or disks.  Some readable, some not.
    Thanks for your help!

I mean raw format, though you mean your disc is mounted, however you can't read the files on the disc?

Running a mid 2009 iMac on 10.7.5, 3 gb memory, 320 gb hd.
Suddenly the computer stoped reading DVDs and the only time I can read a CD is if I restart.  Quite often when I insert a CD it gets stuck and I cannot get it out until I restart and it shows up on the desktop where I can then eject it.
I have checked and double checked the finder prefs and all looks normal showing a check mark on CDs,DVDs etc. (the ones I want to show up on the desktop)
I have reset the PEAM, repaired permissions with both the disk utility on the computer and the disk utility when I start up in the Recovery Disk.  I did notice that sometimes the permission repeat the same correction several times before it moves on, and sometimes it doesn’t. I have Windows installed on a partition but I keep it unmounted until it is needed for my wife’s work.  The dock seems to be just fine and all the apps seems to run just fine.  When I insert a photo CD iPhoto does not open but when I insert a music CD iTunes does open.
Also, most every time I open iPhoto it takes a long time(sometimes as long as 2 minutes) for it to load.
Sometimes my Mail (Mail 5.3) does not post new mail but most of the time it does.
Once and a while it seems like the computer slows way down but then it seems ok ten minutes later.
All  of these ‘things’ seemed to have happen suddenly and I have not downloaded anything from the internet in some time.
Of course the warranty and extended warranty are both no longer in effect having had this computer for more than three years.
I am running Java and Adobe Player because some of the sites I go to a lot require both.

I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.
I hope you'll post here with your results!

  • DVD drive cannot read some of my data dvd's

When I put in some of my data dvd, it reads it as a blank media.
It is strange. I can read data of the exact same DVD in another mac computer.
The problem is I can read some, but some I cannot read. Burning is no problem / no errors.
Any thoughts would be great! Thanks

    Wow, that's interesting.
I haven't had a problem with reading discs in my Powerbook (yet to really use the DVD drive in my MBP), but my old 1999-vintage iMac DVSE with it's DVD-ROM drive often won't read burned DVDs. It has no trouble with commercial discs, or burned CD-Rs, but it fails to read DVDs on a seemingly random basis. Indeed, I had been importing video on my Dad's G5, and burned it to DVD-R (Verbatim). The iMac wouldn't read the discs, while all our other DVD reading Macs would.
I wonder if it's not the write strategy? I know different drives/applications have various methods for burning discs. See Wikipedia's optical disc article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opticaldiscdrive
