Cannot read hybrid ISOs in Disk Utility

I'm trying to burn Ubuntu 13.04 and Mint 15 to a DVD in Disk Utility but the images I've downloaded are not mountable.  Apparently this is because "Hybrid" images are all the rage now, which facilitate creating a bootable USB stick, or something.  I have a particular need to burn these images to DVD.
I've Googled for solutions, and found a recommendation to run the "dd" command to extract the relevant partition from the image, but this has not worked, e.g.
1. Open the image in Disk Utility and note the disk address (e.g. disk3s1)
2.  Run dd if=/dev/disk3s1 of=./ubuntu-13.04-desktop-amd64-extracted.iso bs=1m
3.  Open up the new image and it should be readable
My problem is that the disk address in Disk Utility is always diskNs2, i.e. slice 2 rather than 1.  If I run dd on slice 1, I get a 4096Kb image, if I run it against slice 2, I get a 2.2M image.  Both are obviously nowhere near the 800MB image I'm expecting to get.
Can anyone suggest a workaround, besides booting up into Windows/Linux and trying there?

An Audio CD is likely a CD-R disk, as older players may not handle the CD-RW format. In this case, the disk cannot be reformatted once it has had data written to it, and you will need a new disk to burn your playlist.

  • Ipod will sync up once then says cannot read or write to disk.

Is this normal? The IPOD shows up in Itunes after the first sync but when I go and try to update the ipod again it says it cannot read or write to disk. Tech support says this is normal but it does not make any sense as the IPOD still shows up in Itunes.

the IPOd will sync up when I fiorst plug it in. the problem is when it is finished, Itunes says ipod update complete you can disconnect. I leave it connected, and if I try to update the ipod again after I download something or whatever into Itunes it comes back with the cannot read from or write to disk. I can unplug it and plug it back in and it work sfine. There is something with the software I guess that is not staying connected with the hardware after the first sync.

  • When burning iso with disk utility, the audio is off!

I have an ISO file that works fine when I mount it or watch it on VLC.   If I burn it using windows (in parallels) it is fine...
But when I burn it with disk utility, the audio is off by a second or so.  I can't figure this out since it is a disk image.  there shouldn't be a way to dissociate the audio.  I did have a previous version of the iso file that was off..  Is it possible that I am trying to burn an iso file and it is burning a mounted version from before (even though I am choosing this from the finder?)
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
I though macs just work.  Seems a bit more complicated.

I don't recall for sure about "disk utility" and DVD and/or Bluray. It seems to me that Toast is usually used.

  • Burning .iso with Disk Utility (Mac)?

Anyone doing this? I read it can be done but I just tried and it didn't work.
It's been a long 72 hours or so trying different ways to get my 82-minute 3D feature to various bluray permutaions (i.e. side by side, red-cyan, and of course, 2D) (saving the MVC multiplexing for another day).
Anyway, I was hoping I could just make an .iso image in Encore and then burn multiple copies with Disk Utility. Some sources say it can be done, but it didn't work on my 10.8 iMac. Thanks, all!

  • Cannot reformat new drive in disk utility, drive unformatted.

Hello everybody. I have a 2010 White MacBook unibody running Mavericks. I recently replaced the internal hard drive with a 750 gig Western Digital Black drive. After installing it, I tried to format using disk utility and it would reformat, the options were greyed out. I cannot seem to partion it either. I do have a full backup of my old drive from Carbon Copy Cloner.
Any help would be appreciated thanks!

After installing it, I tried to format using disk utility
How did you boot the computer with an unformatted drive in it?
If you still have the OS 10.6 disk that you list in your profile, boot from it by restarting with the C key held down. Then start the OS installation process and go to the second screen. In the menu bar, click Utilities and select Disk Utility. Have DU do the formatting - select Mac OS extended journaled.

    jrd1993,
are you booting from your original grey Mac OS X installation DVD, and running Disk Utility from that DVD, when you try to format your 750 GB drive?

  • Cannot erase Audio CD in Disk Utility

I have an iBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.4.5.
Under the Hardware on my Mac for Disk Burning, I have CD-Write -R, -RW.
I am attempting to erase an Audio CD using my disk utility. The option to erase or restore the disk is not available when it is chosen in the list of disks to erase or restore.
I would like to erase the disk so I can burn a playlist that I have created in iTunes.
This is an Audio CD that was previously burned on a Windows PC using Windows ME and other burning software that I cannot remember the manufacturer of.
Will the Audio CD erase, or is it due to the fact that this disk was burned on a windows PC that this system will not allow it to be viewed in the disk utility to be erased?

  • Photo Sync problem - Cannot read or write to disk?

Initial sync of my iPad. Photos seemed to download from iPhoto. Space indicated that entire photo library had been copied to iPad. when I go to look for the pictures on the iPad, the screen message is that no photos exist. Back on the iMac, a notice said that the: "The iPad XXX iPad cannot be synced. The disk cannot be read to or written from."
Th sync of my music library had no such problems. What am I doing wrong....all is fine except the photos sync.

  • CD-RW is marked 'read only' by hard disk utility

I want to scratch the contents of a CD-RW or DVD-RW using tht hard disk utility. But this is impossible, the software indicates 'read only'. Even for a new CD the utility says 'read only'. But in the finder the information for the CD is 'read and write'.
What can be the reason? A specific parameter that I by accident set? Or a hardware problem?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd or cd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in *Disk Utility.* Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • Cannot access Windows Partition after Disk Utility (Mavericks)

Today my Windows partition worked. So I thought, might as well fix the permissions of the drive and also repair the drive for any bootloader problems. Resulted in an error saying "Live file system repair is not supported".
Mavericks still works boots fine. Windows on the other hand, does not appear when holding down the Alt/Option key at boot.
Please, I don't need an official documentation that teaches me how to install Boot Camp correctly, I just need an experienced answer to explain what is going on, don't post just to get points please.

I have this exact same problem. In my case, I had a Boot Camp partition set up and fully working, with Windows 8.1. Then, using Parallels 8, I set up a new VM to use that Boot Camp partition (following some instructions from Parallels that I found online).
After that, Windows felt that disk repairs were needed, but it never successfully repaired them. So I went to disk utility, selected the whole hard drive (not just a partition), and did repair.
This led to the error from Disk Utility: "Error: Live file system repair is not supported." And after that, when I reboot with the Option key held down, the Windows partition no longer is even shown. I hope like h*ll it isn't gone, because I had spent some time getting things setup on it.
    Someone, please help.

  • Cannot Set Burn Speed in Disk Utility

    Hi all,
It's been so long since I posted a question (years), I had to redo my settings and start over! Anyway I plan to make multiple DVDs from an FCE project of my daughters soccer season. I've done this in the past and make about 20 per season, but had trouble making then all work using iDVD'06. (Made alot of coasters.) I use Maxell or Verbatim DVD-R both at 16X. Then I was reading here about making it a disk image and then burning it at 4x with Disk Utility. I tried a test of an existing disk image file I made, but the speed option is 'grayed out' for some reason. Not sure why it is not selectable. I did the following:
    1. Opened Disk Utility
    2. Clicked on the .img or .dmg file
    3. Clicked the Burn icon
    4. A new window dropped down and I inserted a DVD-R
    5. Clicked the 'Close' button
    6. The speed selection is 'grayed out' but the 'Test Only' radio box was available
    7. Hover my mouse over the 'grayed out' selection and it says 'Select a slower speed to work around burn failures', but I can't
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Rod

Yes, you can set the burn speed in the iDVD '08 Preferences (finally).
I just can figure out what your problem is with Disk Utility - it's probably something simple we are overlooking.

You are CERTAIN that the DVD you tried had not already been burned to?

  • Burned DVDs won't mount/read but seen by Disk Utility as containing data

    Hi,
I've got a problem. I have about 200 burned DVDs which were created using my LG VHS/DVD recorder/player. I have used these same DVDs to burn from my external LaCie DVD buner with my PPC G5 running Tiger and my LG Blu-Ray burning with my MacBook running Leopard and those burns plays fine on all 3 devices. However, neither the LaCie DVD burner nor the LG Blu-Ray burner seem able to read/mount the DVDs created with the LG VHS/DVD recorder/player although the G5 and the MacBook, both using Disk Utility, can see that there is data and the size of it on each disk. I am also unable to create a disk image for some reason as it begins but halts saying there's an I/O error. I need to get the content of these disks onto Hard Drives to rip and encode. How do I get the computers to mount these disks which they clearly see are not blank?
    Thank you

    Try opening them with mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you may also need the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
You should be able to convert them to mpeg2 which is the standard format of a video DVD.

  • Cannot Read or Write to Disk, Error (-50) When re-syncing

    Hi,
I'm a little frustrated with my iPod. It syncs just fine when it is first connected to my PC with the usb cable. Then if I add another song or video to be synced and hit 'sync iPod' it will timeout and then return with two errors. First it will say 'an unknown error occurred (-50)' followed by 'Disk cannot be read from or written to'.
I've reset my iPod numerous times and this still happens. I've also deauthorized/authorized my computer and I still get both error messages. I'm running the latest iTunes software and the latest firmware update. My iPod will also sync videos with a mac in the Ipod store, just not with my PC.
    Anyone know what's up?
    Thanks.

    Windows PC   Windows XP Pro

I did the 5 R's last night, and now my iPod won't update any songs. The iPod is showing up in iTunes, but the "Update iPod" option is grayed out. Also, before when I had installed my iPod, it appeared in iTunes with my name...now it just says IPOD. I assume that's because it's back to the factory settings, but thought it was odd. (Yes, I know how to rename it.)
Actually, after I ran the iPod updater to completely restore my iPod, it sat there frozen for hours with "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen, NOT flashing. Even after I disconnected the iPod (I had to turn off the computer completely to do this; otherwise, the USB port refused to stop running), the message just sat there. I had to reset it to get it to the point where I could select my language.
Any suggestions? I'm considering just wiping out everything (backing up my files, natch) and starting over with the CD that came with the iPod in the first place.
