Cannot read Leopard DVD in Vista

Hi,
I just got a leopard DVD, and Im trying to upgrade the bootcamp drivers in Vista from the DVD, and I just realised my MBP cant read Dvd's in Vista.
It will spin up the disc, and when i click the Dvd drive, it ejects the DVD.
Anyone experiencing this?
Cheers

Ok, so this was done by Apple by purpose?
To clarify slightly what others have said, Apple licences the grey system discs that come with a Mac for use only with that specific Mac, not for use with any other Mac, even one of exactly the same model. So using them with any other Mac violates the terms of the license & should be avoided. The installer on the grey discs enforces this in part by checking the model of the Mac when it is run & refusing to install anything if the Mac is not the correct model. It displays a warning message that the disc cannot be used with that Mac & the only available option is to quit the installer.
Beyond that, while the grey discs may in fact include & install drivers for the hardware in other, older Mac models, they cannot include ones for Macs using hardware newer than the release date of the Mac they came with. In this case, the other Mac can't even start up from the installer disc & it freezes with a kernel panic before it can run the installer. This seems to be what happened here.

    Hi,
DVD-R and CD-R are two different things. 7 years old, most likely it only supports DVD+R. Please try DVD+R.

  • Reading Leopard DVD in WinXP Pro

From what I gathered, it seems Apple forgot an important piece of information when instructing users to insert their Leopard DVD into Windows XP to update the Boot Camp drivers. This is from an Apple Support page:
"If Mediafour's MacDrive is installed in Microsoft Windows, you may be unable to mount the dual-format Leopard DVD (which includes Apple Boot Camp drivers) to upgrade Apple drivers from Boot Camp Beta to Leopard."
So a third party utility (Mediafour) needs to be installed under Windows first before Windows is able to read the Leopard DVD to access the Boot Camp update drivers?
Why can't they just provide a download?
What a copout. Nowhere is this mentioned on the DVD. I had to find it buried in some Support page.

No. What this is saying is that the DVD is dual format. If you insert it while running Windows without MacDrive it will mount and allow you to install the Boot Camp drivers. If you have MacDrive installed you may have a problem mounting the Windows partition and not be able to install the Boot Camp drivers. You need to disable MacDrive.

  • IMac cannot read any DVD drives - internal or external

    Hi,
My iMac began exhibiting problems about 12 months ago when it wouldn't load CD's properly to iTunes - it would do some songs and not others. It also stopped reading an external drive I bought. I bought another external DVD drive from an apple store - no luck. This iMac of mine refuses to deal with any external media.
Has anyone had the same problem - can anyone help.
I can't upgrade to Snow Leopard BTW - won't read the media
    Thanks and regards,
    Jon

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions...
From your Finder menu bar click Finder / Preferences then select the General tab.
Make sure: *External disks* is selected.
If that box was already, checked try repairing disk permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Hi, I cannot seem to find any videos on my Camileo using the vista file folder system. I can play them back on the camcorder but I cannot load them onto the PC nor does the Youtube button seem to work for me.
Has anyone got any suggestions as to what may be wrong.

    Hi
Can you read the files using a flash card reader? There you can put in the SD card and then you should able to read the videos.
    Can you confirm this?

  • IMac cannot read the DVD

I burned a DVD from Finder. Than the system was not able to read it. I tried with an other disc but the result was the same, It is a Memorex DVD-R.
thank you in advance for any suggestion.

No, unfortunately I can't, because this is my only computer with CD/DVD reader. I wanted to keep files as backup. But even if it would work in PC I would expect that the iMAC can read it's own "product".

  • CANNOT READ VIDEO DVD'S

I had no problems until yesterday. Now Blank DVD's are still recognized and I can burn on them. DVD's with data files and photos also OK. However, video DVD's show error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I tried to reinstall OS 10.4.7 but got error message.

Hi Daniel: Thanks for the idea but that did not work. I talked to Apple support and they suggested complete initialization. Seems as though 2 to 3 days work is a big price for a smallish problem. Like many others, I have 100 GB of software and files!! I'll talk to them again today.

  • Cyberlink PowerDVD cannot read CD/DVD/Blu-Ray in my E:Drive

    Hello bily:
Can you tell me if a software disc works? If so there isn't any thing wrong with your cd/dvd drive. Movie disc have codes ok. HP has made the computer not to open these kinds of disc because they want you to buy cyberlink update. If you open up cyberlink DVD player click on settings then click on update this will open your browser and take you to the Cyberlink update page. Even when you download other media players like VLC, Realplayer and now there is new version VLC but I forgot name of it, These software do have the codes how and are free how ever HP's cyberlink software blocks them. You are not the only one with this issue if type in DVD not working on touchsmart this forum you will see the long lists.  This trend has been aswered buy another brand computer or pay for the update and hope for the best. HP has lost many of its long time costomers because of this one issue. I use a Sony VGC-LT20E to watch movies on. As others have said their good buys to HP and switched to Apple computers. Please click on Kudos if this resolves your issue. Thank you frrw.

  • TouchSmart IQ810de - problems reading CD/DVD

    Hi all,
i just bought a iq810de but i got problems reading a CD or DVD. When i insert a CD it starts reading the disc, but nothing happens. Sometimes it detects the name of the disc. But if i try to access the disc the system stucks. I will keep on reading the disc.
If I try this using the Windows Explorer i can't read the disc and the explorter won't act anymore.
If I try to access a Music dict with the HP TouchSmart SW the HP SW stucks.
If I try to play a DVD i got the same problem. Right now i don't have a BluRay Disc to test, but i think it won't work.
I tryed to uninstall the driver for the Optiarc BD DRV BC-5600S. After uninstalling I rebooted the system. The device was detected agein, but i still got the same Problem.
In the end, i can't read any disc with my new IQ810de, this is quite disappointing. :-(
    Any idea what to do?

    Hi,
Try the steps in this HP support document: Drive Cannot Read Discs in Windows Vista  (Step 4 in particular will help determine if the actual drive has failed.)
Also, if the drive turns out to be ok, try removing the upper and lower registry filters, under Step 4 of this support document: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01300072&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3804393&rul...
Let us know how it goes.

  • Superdrive cannot recognize blank DVD-R

I have a black MacBook that is around 6 months old. I have never had a problem with the superdrive until recently. It can recognize and read DVDs, CDs, and Blank CDs but CANNOT read blank DVD-Rs. It will spin the DVD for a while then eject it. I have tried different brands of DVDs and none work. Is this a problem with my superdrive that Apple needs to fix or can I do it?

A shot in the dark, but these aren't DVD-R DL discs, are they? The original Macbooks can't write to Dual-Layer discs. They'd say DL on the package somewhere, and cost several dollars per disc.
If that's not the issue, then yeah, I think you have a bum drive. I'd take it in while it's still under warranty.

  • I cannot upgrade my iMac 2009 to snow leopard (it was deleted by mistake) now is running 10.5.8, the snow leopard dvd is not installing and the computer keeps crashing..If anyone have an answer, PLEASE Help me.

I have a 2009 iMac 4,1  2GHz intel Core duo it says here I have 1GB of memory. I had it running on snow leopard 10.6.8 I still have the SN software that i bought to made the upgrade. Had some guest staying at my place and they deleted the running os and a lot of files and stuff..., now is running on leopard 10.5.8 and it's giving me a lot of problems because is soo obsolete, also hte computer is crashing all the time and every time I try ti install the SL dvd, the computer won't read the dvd and I'm keeps booting me off. Is not getting better at all and now when I restart the iMac before I get the grey apple screen, the folder of death icon flashes, (I already lost my Macbookpro due this situation. What can I do to resolve this aggravating and frustrating Issue. Need help now ..Please

Before we get too far, please clarify this part:
    I have a 2009 iMac 4,1
A 2009 iMac cannot be an iMac 4,1; they are 9,1 and higher. Did you mean to type "2006?" That would be an iMac 4,1. We need to pin down the model issue before proceeding.
It could be the drive, not the disk, that is dirty. Try a drive cleaning disk, usually about US$5-15 at home entertainment, electronics stores and office superstores

  • Problem reading Captivate 6 installation DVD on Vista

I just received my copy of Captivate 6 on a DVD for Windows. I would like to install Captivate 6 on a PC running Windows Vista 64 bit service pack 2.
My DVD drive cannot open the installation DVD to even start the installation. Is there a way I can install Captivate 6 on my system?
PS-I already paid for this copy of Captivate 6.

Well, this is a mystery. After asking the question, I downloaded and installed the trial version and then used the product code from the purchased version to obtain a serial number. This worked.
I also tried out the install DVD on another computer with Windows 7, and it started to autorun as expected.
I then came back to my Vista PC, inserted an old Acrobat installation DVD, which started to autorun as expected. I removed the Acrobat installation DVD and inserted the new Captivate 6 installation DVD, and magically it started to autorun this time.
It must have been my optical drive, but I don't know why it read the DVD this time and not the others.  (Never got any error messages. The computer just didn't read any data on the drive and was still looking for media to be inserted. Maybe something is a little misaligned??)
At any rate, problem solved and the software is installed and registered. Thanks for your response.

  • Cannot Read Files off CD/DVD Drive

I realize there are several similarly titled posts on this topic, but I have not found the problem I have.  Computer: Pavilion tx2000CTO.  O/S:  Vista Home Premium (all updates current).
Issue:  Some CD's and DVD's cannot be read completely.  I CAN navigate the directory structure.  I CAN see the files.  I CANNOT open them.  When I attempt to open from the DVD drive, nothing happens.  No errors or other messages.  When I attempt to copy to the HDD, I get the error "cannot read from the source file or disk".  This does not happen on all disks, but I cannot find any pattern between when i can or cannot read.  All of these disks are readable on other systems.
Note:  similar for media files or disks.  Some readable, some not.
    Thanks for your help!

I mean raw format, though you mean your disc is mounted, however you can't read the files on the disc?

  • Snow Leopard cannot read Files or Folders with Accents written by Windows 7

I upgraded to snow leopard on launch date in the process of ripping all my music to ALAC in OSX.
I brought it over to windows to encode it in the batch encoder in DV poweramp using Windows 7 RC1.
When I tried to copy the files back to OSX it could not read any files or folders with an accent in their name if they were written by windows. It thought the folders were aliases and kept trying to figure out what was wrong and mp3s it just continually tried to load.
It cannot read them on both FAT32 and NTFS partitions however plugging the FAT32 drive in a Vista computer it was perfectly able to read the files. Any ideas why this might be? I may try writing a file with an accent in the name via Vista later.

Whats odd, accents aren't giving me a problem but a little square unicode character is.
    http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/25a0/index.htm
That is sorta what it looks like, maybe a bit smaller, windows can't open folders with that in it.
Mac chokes on your a accents e and all other varieties.
