Cannot read or extract NEFs from some DNG files

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help.
I've got a subset of DNG files from an older shoot that have somehow become undreadable.  There are 119 bad files out of 1436 total images from the shoot. All of the bad files are in a consecutively numbered range (e.g., they are not randomly distributed).
I'm on a 64-bit Windows 7 system. The bad files do not open in Bridge, Photoshop, CaptureOne, etc., nor will the images thumbnail in Windows Explorer using either the Adobe or Ardfry DNG codecs. I have no idea when or how the corruption occurred, whether is came about from use of a software program, or had something to do with a bad file copy operation. But my current backups are also corrupted.
However, I always embed the original NEFs or CR2s in my DNGs, and so I was hoping to extract the originals.  However, the DNG Converter refuses to operate on these files, though they appear to be of the right size.
Does anyone know of a way to salvage the original RAW NEFs from these damaged files?  Is anyone at Adobe looking for a little science project?  :-)  I would be grateful for any suggestions...
Thanks very much,
Gary

I will attach a link to a troubleshoting document for this issue. If this does not resolve the issue you could TRY a restore to befor the issue started occurring, or a recovery MIGHT do the trick if it is not an actual hardware failure in the optical drive. The clicking concerns me that it might be a hardware issue... is it the typical clicking that you will hear when a disc is initially being read or is it a more aggressive clicking??
There is a fix in this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116 that has you go in and delete the upper and lower filters in the registry. It is a little tricky, so I suggest you follow it WORD for WORD once you are actually in the registry.
I have seen deleting the upper and lower filters resolve most optical drive issues that were not hardware related.

  • Metadata loading forever from some DNG files

    Hello guys,
    I have LR4 under Win7 and for some folders containing DNG files the metadata loading takes forever. I.e. for the first 10 dng files the metadata will load in 5 seconds, for the next 10 files the metadata keeps loading forever and for the last 10 files the metadata will load in 5seconds.
    Do you have similar experience? Any resolution?
    Boris

    I tried to load the images in a program of my own for the analysis of raw images; it said, that those files were not TIFFs at all. Then I looked at the file content with a "neutral" program, without interpreting it and found, that it starts with "8BPS", which is the internal identification of PSD files. I renamed one and loaded in PS with success. The JPEG file to can be easily recognized when viewing the content in binary format.

    hello,
    I am a student and I start recently learning carbon. I have to do a application which can read and extract data from a sound file and use that data to do some kind of visual representation of the file. I would like to know if someone can give some directions, tutorial,some code sample etc.
    thank you for your help

    hello orangekay
    My idea is to create an application that can read a sound file( AIFF, MP3 or other) in order to extract some kind of data ( numbers or any values) and use that data to represent the sound file visually.
    I dont know which kind of data can be extract from a sound file, and in which way i can manipulate that data to became a visual representation of the sound file. this is what I want to do as my second assignment for a subject at school, introduction to programming. has to be done based in carbon.

  • GP - WD Java: Cannot read callable object description from component

    Hi,
    i use Guided Procedures and therefore i will generate a WebDynproJ Callable Object inside the GP.
    When i try to intergate it into Design-Time i get follwoing error after i picked the WebDynpro Component:
    Cannot read callable object description from component: type com.sap.caf.gp.quotcreate.model.bapi_quotation_createfromdata2.types.Vbeln_Va could not be loaded: com.sap.dictionary.runtime.DdException: TypeBroker failed to access SLD: Error while obtaining JCO connection.
    Well because i could import the Model into the WD Component in NWDS with the given JCo i have no clue why this error is now popping up.
    Does someone have some experience with this phenomenon?!
    I also wanted to check the JCo's in Content Admin but even though i am an Admin (i am sure of this) i have no rights to enter this part. Also the SLD is properly configured!

    When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    1. Clear Firefox's Cache
    orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
    On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
    2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
    While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

    There are so many things wrong with this VI, I'm not even sure where to start.
    Hard-coding paths that point to your user folder on the block diagram. What if somebody else tries to run it? They'll get an error. What if somebody tries to run this on Windows 7? They'll get an error. What if somebody tries to run this on a Mac or Linux? They'll get an error.
    Not using Read From Spreadsheet File.
    Use of local variables to populate an array.
    Cannot insert values into an empty array.
    What if there's a line missing from the text file? Now your data will not line up. Your case structure does handle this.
    Also, how does this answer the poster's question?

  • How to extract text from a PDF file?

    Hello Suners,
    i need to know how to extract text from a pdf file?
    does anyone know what is the character encoding in pdf file, when i use an input stream to read the file it gives encrypted characters not the original text in the file.
    is there any procedures i should do while reading a pdf file,
    File f=new File("D:/File.pdf");
                   FileReader fr=new FileReader(f);
                   BufferedReader br=new BufferedReader(fr);
                   String s=br.readLine();any help will be deeply appreciated.

    First, you set i once, and then loop without ever changing it. So your loop body will execute either 0 times or infinitely many times, writing the same byte every time. Actually, maybe it'll execute once and then throw an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException. That's basic java looping, and you're going to need a firm grip on that before you try to do anything as advanced as PDF reading. the case.oops you are absolutely right that was a silly mistake to forget that,
    Second, what do the docs for getPageContent say? Do they say that it simply gives you the text on the page as if the thing were a simple text doc? I'd be surprised if that's the case.getPageContent return array of bytes so the question will be:
    how to get text from this array? i was thinking of :

  • Reading in an array from a text file

    I'm trying to use a text file to load in some configuratin
    data (using actionscript 3) I have it working ok for simple stuff
    like gamename=Chess&gamescore=100 , etc... but some of the data
    needs to be in an array. Can someone please point me in the right
    direction to how I can read in an array from a text file?
    Thanks!

    the easiest way is to create a string with the (soon-to-be)
    array elements separated by a delimiter (like a double comma). read
    in your string, then use the split() method of strings to split
    your string into an array.

    Hi,
    EdStevens
    Actually I was using SQL Developer. Sorry for the wrong define question. Now the real problem is:
    I want to read or extract data in a txt file from Oracle Dump (.dmp) file without using Oracle sqlPlus or Oracle Database.
    No need to say that i am able to extract dump data using sqlPlus. But for that, there is a little burden to install oracle database
    or sql Developer.
    I also listen about Oracle Loader a little bit. Is it a tool for providing extraction of data from Oracle dump file.
    Thanks for your previous reply,
    And now waiting for your suggestion.

  • Faillure writing metadata to some DNG files

    I'm having a problem writing metadata to some dng files using Lightroom 2.6.1. When I try to apply a metadata template to a batch of files most of them get changes but a few don't. This only effects DNG files so far JPEG and TIFF seem to be OK. I have tried running the problem files through DNG converter and the new files have the same problem. Lightroom won't write to them.
    I can change the metadata of these files from Bridge. The changes then appear properly in Lightroom. Afterwards I can change the metadata again from Lightroom.
    I'm working on a MacBook Pro (Late 2008) and running OS 10.6.2.

    I created a preset to export to same folder as original, same format as original, and stack with (above) original. I used this on the seven files, and it has solved the problem without losing any metadata.
    The jpegs had at some point been processed by Photoshop Elements as they were imported/edited using that application in 2010 but the metadata problem didn't show up until recently when I was making some adjustments in Lightroom. I somehow think this may be related to the GPS tag though I don't have sufficient evidence.
    The DNG file was strange in that it was straight the camera with no Lightroom adjustments, although I did add GPS info in the Map module. Anway it is now fixed as well as the jpegs.
    With this preset it would be possible quickly to fix a large number of image files. Just create a Smart Collection to display the problem files and run the preset on them all in one go. The only things that I am aware of that you would need to look out for are (1) if they are in a collection other than a smart collection, or have been published to a service like Flickr or to the Hard Disk the link will be broken, and (2) If you like to sort photos by date/time added, they will be out of the sequence (capture time is fine).
    When you are satisfied that this has worked OK then you can delete the images from the "Metadata Not Up To Date" smart collection. Select all, go to all photos, they should remain selected and press Delete. You could do a thousand in one go if you have the nerve for it
    Hope this helps.

  • Reading a Random Line from a Text File

    Hello,
    I have a program that reads from a text file words. I currently have a text file around 800KB of words. The problem is, if I try to load this into an arraylist so I can use it in my application, it takes wayy long to load. I thought that maybe serializing the ArrayList might be faster than creating the ArrayList by iterating over each line in the text file. But alas, I was wrong. Here's my code anyway:
    class WordList extends ArrayList<String>{
      long updated;
    WordList readWordList(File file) throws Exception{
      WordList list = new WordList();
      BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file));
      String line = null;
      while ((line = in.readLine()) != null){
        list.add(line);
      in.close();
      list.updated = file.lastModified();
      return list;
    WordList wordList;
    File datFile = new File("words.dat");
    File txtFile = new File("input.txt");
    if (datFile.exists()){
      ObjectInputStream input = new ObjectInputStream(new FileInputStream(datFile));
      wordList = (WordList)input.readObject();
      if (wordList.updated < txtFile.lastModified()){
        //if the text file has been updated, re-read it
        wordList = readWordList(txtFile);
        ObjectOutputStream output = new ObjectOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(datFile));
        output.writeObject(wordList);
        output.close();
    } else {
      //serialized list does not exist--create it
      wordList = readWordList(txtFile);

  • I can't read in a date from a txt file

    Im not sure of the code needed to read in a date from the text file, this is an example of the text file:
    1
    2
    2003
    ie,
    day
    month year
    I have to read in this date, this is the set method for the date:
    public void setPurchaseDate (int d, int m, int y)
    new Date(d,m,y);
    And this is the code that I have tried using to readin the date:
      PurchaseDate=(Integer.parseInt(line),Integer.parseInt(line),Integer.parseInt(line));now i know its wrong, I just dont know what the code should be!!
