"cannot read or write to disk" when transferring itunes TV shows to iPod

I have downloaded two TV shows from iTunes, but cannot get them transferred to my iPod. When I click "Update iPod," with one of the shows selected, it will begin to download to the iPod and get ALMOST to the point of finishing, and then I will get an error message stating that the iPod can't be read or written to. At first I thought I just had a corrupted video file (although it plays fine on my computer), so I downloaded a second TV show. Same thing. I have downloaded some music vidoes from iTunes, and they transfer perfectly to my iPod. I've noticed that since I downloaded the latest iPod updater and version of iTunes, that I've had the same problem getting a few songs to transfer to my iPod from CDs as well, with the can't read or write error. This only happens to maybe one song out of thirty, but it is still annoying. Maybe it is the updater??
If anyone out there can help me, I would really appreciate it since I'm dying to watch these shows on my iPod! Thanks in advance!!

I did the 5 R's last night, and now my iPod won't update any songs. The iPod is showing up in iTunes, but the "Update iPod" option is grayed out. Also, before when I had installed my iPod, it appeared in iTunes with my name...now it just says IPOD. I assume that's because it's back to the factory settings, but thought it was odd. (Yes, I know how to rename it.)
Actually, after I ran the iPod updater to completely restore my iPod, it sat there frozen for hours with "Do Not Disconnect" on the screen, NOT flashing. Even after I disconnected the iPod (I had to turn off the computer completely to do this; otherwise, the USB port refused to stop running), the message just sat there. I had to reset it to get it to the point where I could select my language.
Any suggestions? I'm considering just wiping out everything (backing up my files, natch) and starting over with the CD that came with the iPod in the first place.

  • Ipod will sync up once then says cannot read or write to disk.

Is this normal? The IPOD shows up in Itunes after the first sync but when I go and try to update the ipod again it says it cannot read or write to disk. Tech support says this is normal but it does not make any sense as the IPOD still shows up in Itunes.

the IPOd will sync up when I fiorst plug it in. the problem is when it is finished, Itunes says ipod update complete you can disconnect. I leave it connected, and if I try to update the ipod again after I download something or whatever into Itunes it comes back with the cannot read from or write to disk. I can unplug it and plug it back in and it work sfine. There is something with the software I guess that is not staying connected with the hardware after the first sync.

  • Cannot Read or Write to Disk, Error (-50) When re-syncing

    Hi,
I'm a little frustrated with my iPod. It syncs just fine when it is first connected to my PC with the usb cable. Then if I add another song or video to be synced and hit 'sync iPod' it will timeout and then return with two errors. First it will say 'an unknown error occurred (-50)' followed by 'Disk cannot be read from or written to'.
I've reset my iPod numerous times and this still happens. I've also deauthorized/authorized my computer and I still get both error messages. I'm running the latest iTunes software and the latest firmware update. My iPod will also sync videos with a mac in the Ipod store, just not with my PC.
    Anyone know what's up?
    Thanks.

  • Photo Sync problem - Cannot read or write to disk?

Initial sync of my iPad. Photos seemed to download from iPhoto. Space indicated that entire photo library had been copied to iPad. when I go to look for the pictures on the iPad, the screen message is that no photos exist. Back on the iMac, a notice said that the: "The iPad XXX iPad cannot be synced. The disk cannot be read to or written from."
Th sync of my music library had no such problems. What am I doing wrong....all is fine except the photos sync.
    Thanks!

  • WD passport "cannot read or write to disk"

I'm having difficulties adding and removing files from my 160 gb WD passport external hard drive. it has just recently began to act up on me. i use it primarily for my itunes library. however, recently when i try to import music music into my itunes, it won't all write to my external. and now none of it seems to write. i can not add the files manually to the hard drive either. i've been able to remove most of the files on the hard drive but some of the music and movies will not come off. i've run the disk repair on the hard drive but it says that there is nothing wrong with it. i've tried using disk warrior but it won't work on this external because it is formatted FAT32 apparently. i'm not sure what to do now. i know i probably need a new external. but how do i go about moving my itunes library from the broken one to the new one? it still mounts and it still shows that the files are there. i just can't write to the disk and some of the files can not be read. i'm hoping to figure this out before it possibly dies completely. thank you.

  • I tunes says cant read or write to disk when tryiing to sync to down load podcasts

I cant Download podcasts. It syncs and only downloads a small part then stops. Then gives me a message can no read or wwrite to disk.

Only with podcasts?  Does it sync completely when syncing songs?
Do you use automatic syncing to load content, or do you use the manual method (drag items to iPod in iTunes)?
It seems like the iPod's disk does not stay mounted during the sync process.  As a test, try shutting down (powering off) the computer and disconnecting all USB devices, including hub (except for standard keyboard and mouse if normally used).  If your computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).  Do this to Reset (restart) the iPod

Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect the iPod.  Try syncing podcasts as before, and note if there is any difference regarding this problem.

  • Error! Cannot read or write to my ipod

Whenever I plug my ipod into my powerbook, I get the error, "The ipod cannot be updated. The disk could not be read or written to." It was working fine, and then all of a sudden this happened.
I've restored the ipod and reinstalled itunes, but I still have the same problem. The ipod is working fine, and I can still add music to it, but I have to do it manually and it locks up repeatedly. I have had problems syncing iphoto with it as well.
Please help! I've talked to a few friends that said it is a sign that my hard drive is failing. Any thoughts?

The solution is or at least it was for me is as simple as the "speed" of your USB conection. On my old PC i would connect my ipod via a USB on the front casing , no problems, when i changed my PC i used the front USB again and got the cannot read or write to ipod error. I just connected the ipod to one of the USBs at the rear and as i understand it they need to be USB2 type , have a go try all the USBs you have especially the ones at the back of your PC , hope this helps it did for me

  • HT4527 When transferring iTunes from old computer to new computer, even though all of songs were copied over, not all of them went to iTunes, some appear to be stored elsewhere. How can I find these songs, and how do I transfer them to iTunes?

When transferring iTunes from old computer to new computer, all my songs were copied over, but not all of them were stored in iTunes. It appears they are on the computer somewhere, but not on iTunes. Where are these other songs likely to be, and how can I get them onto iTunes? Because of this problem, Apple will not allow me to update my iPhone.

You may/must have had music files stored outside of your iTunes library.
I'd recommend going to the Finder and then via the search box look for files with mp3 aif m4a aac etc. depending on the music format your digital music had. With the list of files shown you should be able to learn which files were stored outside of your music > itunes folder
Chances are they could be burried somewhere under your documents, downloads, desktop, ... we all have different storage and organization habits.
Then when you find the missing files, on the new computer you can do add to library and go to the folder on the other computer where the missing files are - if your systems are networked - or sneak them over using a USB thumb drive or portable hard drive if you have lots of files, or if you like to have an extra backup of that music, copy to optical disc.

  • When transfering iTunes music from an older computer to a newer computer, do the versions need to be the same on both?

When transfering itunes music from my older computer to a newer computer, do both itunes need to be the same version?

No... the target machine needs to be running the same version or better.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • Cannot sync Ipod or read or write to disk

please help I jst bought my 30gb ipod and every time I try to sync music to it the msg comes cannot sync ipod. I cannot put on one song at a time but have to replace my whole library in the ipod to add one song.
thanx for your help in advance

    let's first try this document:

  • WARNING: Cannot "Read or Write" files on iPod

My iPod has been behaving very curiosly as of late. For the past month a wanring has flashed up on my iTunes screen when attempting to sync music files. The warning says *"Cannot read the disk 'iPod'. Unable to read or write files"*. Despite this warning my iPod has been able to update daily podcasts without issue. However, when I recently purchased new music I could not get it to sync to my iPod. I have no problem listening to this new album in my iTunes library, but it just will not sync to my iPod. I created a playlist for it and attempted to add it, but I discovered that the iPod was not syncing the playlists either!
In a recent attempt to remedy the problem I selected only to sync the playlist that had the new album. What happened was frightening. All my music was no longer on the iPod, with the exception of my podcasts! I tried altering the settings to return all the music, but now I am unable to add any of my music from the library.
I am wondering if anyone has experienced this difficulty before, and if so, if they have any trouble shooting techniques. I have already been ti Apple's support page and completed the 5 recommended steps, to no avail. Any suggestions or thoughts as to what might be occuring.

Luckily, backing up your itunes library is easy. Just duplicate the folder(s) with your music in it. (Most likely, it's user/Music/ITunes.) Once the copy is made, you might want to move it to a different part of your hard drive.
Now, restoring your ipod WILL wipe the device. If there's anything on your ipod that isn't in your itunes library (unlikely but possible), you want to make sure you've got a copy of it somewhere before restoring.
Before restoring, check to see if there is an update to the ipod's firmware that needs to be installed. This is a "longshot" but might help. Just click the "check for update" button on the ipod's "Summary" pane in itunes. (Current version is 1.2.3, I think).
