Cannot read pdf's

All was working well until I updated Internet Explorer to IE 10. Now, all I get is some little black box off to the left of my screen. Any suggestions?

AOL used to have a lot of problems with PDFs, hope that has not returned. Anyway, the PDF was probably sent as a text file rather than encoded as a binary file. That would make it corrupt and is a problem on the senders end. Older versions of Outlook also had problems with PDFs that would cause a problem on your end.

That is definitely a very old Reader version! Uninstall it, then install the latest Reader for Vista, which is 10.1.9

Every time I go to a PDF link in Safari on my iMac I just get a blank, gray screen. At first I thought that they were big PDF files that needed to download, but nope, it's just a blank screen without the document ever showing up. If I view it in a different browser, the document comes up just fine, and if I save it as a file to view with Viewer, it's fine. But I want to read PDF files in Safari itself. Modern web browsers like Safari use a lot of helper apps, separate programs that let them know what to do with unusual file types like an .mp4 movie or, in this case, a portable document format (PDF) file. Normally it works fine and most people end up using Adobe's PDF Viewer plug-in for their Web browsing, letting you easily click on and view PDFs to your heart's content.
Except sometimes when there's a glitch in how things are set up in Safari on a Mac OS X system.
For reasons that I really don't understand, what appears to be the case is that Mac OS X ships with a broken PDF plug-in, but even with the very latest system patch, the problem's still present. And here's
what you see... Instead of viewing the PDF document in question, it's just a gray screen::

To say that's frustrating is an understatement! When I first hit this problem, I just switched to a different Web browser entirely, which is rather a dramatic solution if you think about it.
Instead, let's fix it.
To do that, use Spotlight to find a plugin called AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin. Simply click on the magnifying glass icon on the very top right of your screen and type in that plugin name:
Click on "Show All In Finder" (since there should only be one) and you'll see this:
Delete the plugin. No, really. You'll see, it'll work because Safari actually has a built-in PDF viewer capability that doesn't need the Adobe software available:
That's it. Now quit and restart Safari and go back to the very same PDF URL and
Why there's a broken plugin included with Mac OS X I cannot explain, but this'll fix things and you'll be good to go, no gray screen of non-viewing, just happy PDF files.

Cannot read PDF files with safari

Hello,
I cannot read my online magasine with my iPad.
When I open it as PDF with safari, I can read the first few pages but then it freezes and safari just shuts down. It's very frustrating!
There was a similar post to this in the Mac section where they suggest deleting all cookies, history and cache. I tried that but it does not solve the problem.
Any help welcome!

It seems that the problem is due to safari crashing with memory overload.
I am very disappointed with the iPad. It would seem it is nothing but an overpriced toy. It's supposed to be the most amazing thing ever for accessing the Internet and yet I can't even read an online magazine. Should have thought twice before buying it.

Cannot read PDFs in browser with Windows 7

Since I installed Windows 7 I have not been able to read PDFs in IE8 - all I get is a blank page. I can open them fine when they are in a stand alone file. I have tried Reader 9.2, 8.1.3 and 8.1.4. I tried unchecking 'display PDF in browser' but that gave me an error message that the file could not be found. I have seen a number of posts on the internet but no solution.

I had the same problem but I use Firefox, so I went to top of screen in Firefox and clicked "tools" then "option" then under "applications" tab had to adjust for documents, forms etc...for Adobe Reader 9 to open documents and it worked. My issue was when online trying to open a pdf form or page and I would just get a blue box with a question mark. I am also on Win 7...not sure if this will help you since you are IE.

I'm not trying to convince you! I accept that Adobe's products have value for certain professionals, and given that Acrobat and the pdf format is one of their specialities, I'd be surprised if despite all the development and investment they put into it their product had no advantages over Apple's give-away reader.
Adobe Reader is free as well - as are the plugins that come with it. I just opened a medical study PDF in Preview - none of the actions worked.
I just don't see how a sales pitch for Adobe is relevant to the OPs problem. You don't need an Adobe plug-in to view pdfs in Safari. I've been getting by without it for years (I just checked and 2010 was the last date I had and Adobe plug-in installed). More to the point, the OPs problem is almost certainly caused by an old Adobe plug-in that needs to be removed.
It's not a sales pitch - it's the correct answer to the OPs problem. If he/she wants to view PDF files inline using Safari, they will need to install Adobe Reader, which also installs the "AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin". If he/she doesn't want the content displayed correctly, then they can leave the plugin alone.
It's that simple.

I have the latest version of Adobe Reader, the latest OS for Mac, and the latest Safari browser update. but after installing Reader, the ability to access a PDF has become mostly restricted. the full gray screen comes up and a document cannot be accessed. what should I do?

There should be an icon that instructs you to trust the Adobe Reader application for this website. Click on it to approve the action. This is part of a new security practice.

Help!! Cannot read pdf files in Microsoft Word 2003.

Everytime I download a document and try to open up a box opens up an says file conversion ms-dos word document (default) and some others as well. I've tried all and still will not work. There are a lot of letters and sybols that come up. whats the problem? I tried installing adobe and acrobat over and over .

You have to provide a bit more information than that. Your OS, your browser, what is causing that conversion - a browser extension?
If "something" converts a downloaded PDF doc to MS Word format, then that is not a problem of Acrobat or Reader.
Can you provide a screenshot of that po-up - perhaps we can find out what is causing that conversion.

Cannot read PDF with Bookmarks

Good day all,
When I open the following PDF in adobe reader, I can see the bookmarks...but when I try to go to one of them, nothing happens.   I was able to have this work for Android, but for some reason it is not working on in iOS.
Steps to repeat problem:
Open the following in Reader:   http://www.parker.com/literature/Tube%20Fittings%20Division/4300_Catalog_Cover.pdf
Touch Bookmarks icon
Touch "Catalog_Sections"
Try to navigate/read any of those page.
     -> Also, you might even run into the problem that when you touch the Catalog_Sections, it will not display any of that information
Secondly, I would like to open these types of PDFs from within a mobile application (with the ability to open bookmarks), instead of leaving the app and going to Adobe Reader.   Does anyone have any thoughts on how to accomplish that?

i just got my n76 and when i transfered my pdf file to it, it managed to open but no words could be seen. every page was a blank one. bookmarks were present but just no words. anyone has such a problem? can anybody help? thanks

Cannot read pdf files suddenly

I have tried to open on another computer and it works, so the files are not locked, or currupt.
I tried to download last version and it told me I already had a new version and shut me out.
Then I deleted my currrent files and tried to down load again.
When I try to open the PDF doc. it will no nothing.
I must access files all day long - can someone help?

Cannot read PDF files downloaded via acsm

The app does not allow copying and reading the PDF downloaded via acsm delivery mechanism as it reports to be protected. Is this known issue or needs to be treated like a feature request. On PC, you read this document via Adobe Digital Editions.

Adobe Reader 9 Cannot read PDF

Received a PDF via email as an attachment and I get this message... "An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem." The person who sent the PDF uses AOL and does not know how to correct the problem. I use Yahoo and my system is WindowsXP. Is there something that I can do on my end to read this PDF?
