Cannot read threads on discussion or elsewhere on the internet with Lion

Text in sites, and on these forums is all 'As in little squares. Nothing can be read. Lion is taking over and I don't know how to fix it.
Sometimes, like posting this, I can read my own post, but in other apps also, like InDesign, the lettering is all A's inside of little squares.

Same thing happened to me. I used Time Machine to restore my system fonts to just before everything went bad. Then I went through FontAgent Pro and removed any fonts that were duplicates of system fonts. Seemed to solve the problem.
New problem though is that the fonts I do have activated in FontAgent Pro are not showing up in any application font menus, so I can't get any work done. It's been 3 days of working with their tech support and no sollution yet. I'm going to miss deadlines. Not cool. I should have waited on the Lion upgrade.
Fortunately for me, I have no projects that require use of the Mac right now, awaiting client approvals. This gives me time to anticipate how I'm going to react to complete jobs, printer drivers do not work with Adobe CS programs, but do with with Acrobat, so I can convert some to PDF for printing while I wait to get issue resolved with printing.
This will all take time as each issue has to be worked out with each vendor, not an easy prospect as some vendors are non-existent in the customer service department. Lion is basically causing me to re-build my Mac. I like the speed and 'heft' of Lion, so I'm going to brave it through. I only hope I do not have to buy a second mac just to run Snow Leopard, which was the version that ran most everything just fine. I will not install separate OS's on my main Mac as I do not want to do that, I would rather just buy another new machine and keep it on the side to run old apps that are not available any longer, like OmniPage - the optical character reader program that really works, but not on Lion.
Best Wishes You Brave Souls,
Ken

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

• WRT 120N- Cannot connect to the internet with more than one PC at a time.

Before I went on a three month vacation,I could connect 3 or 4 PC's either wireless or wired to my router with no problems at all.I have a desk top and a laptop computer which I use at home. After I returned,I found that I could connect to the internet with only one PC at a time.
If I was say, connected via my laptop,my desk top would continuously keep getting disconnected and vice versa.I have been reading the suggestions from experts here and have done a few checks based on them.I also cannot get to my router page which is 192.168.1.1 I keep getting a message that says "Problem Loading Page" and this happens with both,Firefox and Internet Explorer.I am running Windows 7 - 32 bit on my desk top and Vista Home Premium on my laptop.
I have opened the "Command Prompt" dialogue and pinged 192.168.1.1 and thereafter I typed in "ipconfig".These are the results:

I presume that this model is a modem **bleep** router as I do not have a separate modem with my system.I have a DSL connection and the firmware version of my router is ver.1.0.If I recall,I did upgrade to the next firmware upgrade a few months after I purchased the router but I am not sure.
I use both my PC's to run a small business venture and I am worried that resetting the router may cause some other problems and will stop me from using the internet.
The Command Prompt information above was taken from my laptop.
Any help will be really appreciated.

I do not know if the above result is what it is supposed to be but I still cannot access my router's home page. How do I verify if there is a proxy server and if there is one,how do I disable it in my browsers? This problem occured suddenly as a few months earlier all was well. It's getting rather frustrating.
I suggest resetting the router. Make sure firmware is updated. You can download it here - http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT120N. After firmware upgrade, reset and reconfigure. Just access the link below to guide you setting up the router.

• I cannot open pdf in my new computer in the internet. Help please

I cannot open pdf in my new computer in the internet. I have Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 11. All it does is open up a blank page with a white x in a black square. How can I fix this?

Hi Pat..When I tried to run Fix It the computer pops up a screen that says this trouble shooter does not apply to this computer .The article refers to Internet Explorer 10 and Im running Internet Explorer 11. I did try to see it it would fix my problem but the registry entry does not exist on my computer (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\TabProcGrowth) I can get as far as HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer but I dont have the option to choose Main. I only have the option to choose New Window which does not open up when clicked. Internet Explorer also has no value. Is there anything else I should try?

• I want to use icloud but i have a lot of music on itunes that has been downloaded from elsewhere on the internet. Will i be able to access this on icloud if it has not be bought through itunes?

I want to use icloud but i have a lot of music on itunes that has been downloaded from elsewhere on the internet. Will i be able to access this on icloud if it has not be bought through itunes?

Not on iCloud itself - what you need is 'iTunes Match' which seeks to find versions in the Store of songs you already have, and failing that allows you to upload your own copies. This will cost you $24.99 per year; it does not count towards your 5GB free iCloud space. Limit 25,000 songs (purchased songs do not count towards this limit). You will need iTunes 10.5.1 or later on your Mac or PC and iOS 5.0.1 or later on your iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), or iPad.
Please see this page: http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/
Also note that some people have found that when using this facility with songs which contain strong language, iTunes Match is substituting a cleaned-up version.

• Cannot access the internet with Safari

Safari locked up and made me restart the computer. When I did, I could no longer access the internet with Safari. I could still get into the ITunes store, had internet contect come over my dashboard, but cannot get online. I spent two hours with customer service, emptying caches, re-installing Safari, etc. but still have no luck as of today. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi
Welcome to  Discussions
I grew up in the Delaware Valley - Delaware County/Media.
Do you remember specifically what you were doing in Safari when it locked up, locking up your entire system. It's rare this happens in OS X.
Also, which version of OS X Tiger are you using - the latest is 10.4.9? You can determine such by going to the Apple Menu in the upper left of the screen and selecting "about this Mac". The next panel will show you your OS X version, plus other information about your system.
Regarding the inability to connect, try Safari from another User Account. In case you require it, here's how to set up another account:
Here is guidance from Apple on how to set up the account. You can ignore step 7 in the article.
Also, on the system preference>Accounts panel, click on "log-in" options. There, select "fast user switching". This allows you to go back and forth between user accounts via an icon in your Menu Bar at the top of the computer screen.
Log-on to the new account and start Safari. If Safari connects to the internet in the new account, then your problem is specific to your regular user account. Otherwise, similar response means a system-wide problem.

I cannot retrieve the password for the wifi connection on my imac and so cannot access the internet with my ipad at home.  I have a cable modem. Help please!

If you mean that you cannot remember the password for your WiFi network this will work for you - or it should work if you are the administrator on the Mac.
You will need to be logged in as the administrator on your Mac and you must know the password - Open Keychain Access on your Mac in the utilities folder, click on Passwords. Find the Airport Network Password listed on the right. Double click on it. Click on show password in the the window that pops up. Enter your administrator password when prompted and click allow.
If Keychain is locked - you must enter the administrator password there as well to unlock it and access the password.
If you have set the Mac up for Internet Sharing for the iPad to share the Mac's connection, just create a new network On the Mac with Internet sharing and a new password.

Ah I figured it out.....Mcafey was blocking it. Why on earth did AVG being uninstalled update mcafey settings, to block firefox?

• HT4623 Cannot update from iOS 6.1.3 to iOS 7...says that I cannot verify because I am not connected to the internet when I am clearly connected to the internet. I've tried from home and school.  Now what?

I am trying to update an iPad 2 to iOS 7.  It hasn't updated since iOS 6.1.3.  When I try to update it, I get a msg box that tells me I cannot verify because I am not connected to the internet.  This is not true because I AM connected to the internet here at school.  I've tried at home and it does the same thing.  What to do now?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

This is on my desktop PC running Windows XP. Have used Firefox successfully for a couple of years. This problem was first noticed on 1/18/2012.
Logging off and logging back into AOL does not fix it. Closing and re-opening Firefox does not fix it. Shutting down and rebooting the PC does not fix it.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• I cannot connect to the Internet after Lion upgrade

I'm having a similar problem to some other threads.  After upgrading to Lion I cannot access the Internet wirelessly through my Airport base station.  All other Macs in the house are working fine.  Per the other threads:
- I do not have Avast installed
- I have tried trashing the System Configuration in Preferences
- I have tried creating new locations
- I tried enabling "Auto Proxy Discovery" and "Automatic Proxy Configuration" in Network Preferences.
None of this has worked.  Here is the message I get in Safari:
"The operation couldn't be completed.  Operation not permitted."  (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:1)
I previously was getting a kernel panic after startup when I did the upgrade.  But I was able to narrow it down to Intego Content Barrier which I deleted.  I then reinstalled Lion and the system seems stable.  Just can't get the Internet to work.
Any other ideas or thoughts on this?
Thanks!
David
