Cannot rearrange songs in playlists

I recently upgraded to iTunes 9.1.1.12, and now I'm noticing that I cannot rearrange songs in custom playlists. Was this feature taken away or am I missing something?

Open the playlist and click on the top of the number column (extreme left) to highlight the header, if another column is highlighted the songs won't move. Also make sure neither Shuffle or Repeat are switched on in the playlist, either of those can prevent you reordering tracks.

Rearranging Songs in Playlists in 11.0.1

For whatever reason, this most recent version of iTunes decided to organize my playlist alphabetically--and won't let me rearrange the songs the way I want them.
I tried drag-n-drop and just about everything else but dynamite.
Thoughts on how I can take back control of my iPod songs?

The option is still there: iTunes -> File menu -> Devices -> Transfer purchases from...

Cannot remove songs from playlists in the latest iTunes version

I am running iTunes 11.1.5. When I select a song or songs in a playlist that I want to remove from the playlist (but keep in iTunes) and hit the Delete or Backspace key nothing happens. What's strange is I am able to remove songs from some of my playlists but not others. Does this behavior work differently in playlists I create myaself and playlists iTunes provides for you? It seems I can remove songs from my own playlists but not from the ones provided by iTunes.

You cannot manually add or delete from smart playlists (they appear in purple in my iTunes and at the top of all the playlists). Smart playlist content is generated by the rules controlling the playlist. Right (control+) click on a smart playlist to see the rules.

I have this same problem with iTunes 9.0.2. Can't drag and drop anything. Sometimes rebooting helps, sometimes it doesn't. Of course you can work around it -- right click as someone mentioned, or if you're creating a playlist, File>Create New Playlist from Selection. But it's a pain, and I hate the fact that I'm not getting the functionality I paid for. Wish someone (Apple, where are you?) could solve this problem.

Cannot drag songs within playlists and library

I can drag songs from the main library to the playlists, but i cannot change the order of anything inside the playlist. If I try, the edges around my screen will turn pink. Ive googled and searched this problem on the forums, and I cant find anything in settings about it, any help would be much appreciated!

My ipod rearranges songs on playlists

Ok, I have a 160gb video "Classic" (i guess). I shuffle my playlists on itunes but then when i update my ipod & disconnect it the songs on the playlists on my ipod aren't shuffled. I think they are in reverse chronological order, meaning the last song added to the list is the first on the playlist & so fourth.
... How the heck do i fix that?!?

Ok here's the solution (Works for me):
1. Rearrange the playlist as you wish.
2. Command click (right click) on the playlist on the left sidebar, and select 'Copy to Play Order'
Now on your iPod they'll be in the correct order.

I want to arrange the songs in a playhlist in a specific order. I was playing around with the artist, album, genre incons and cannot get back to the actual list order so I can make changes. Please help.

Cannot delete songs from iPod when in manual update mode

I am using iTunes 7 and i'm trying to delete some songs just from my iPod and i have always used the manual update option.
The problem is when i go into the songs on my iPod and go into a playlist and try to delete the songs within a playlist it won't let me. BUT when i search for those same songs within my iPod library (library shows all songs on the iPod) i can delete them.
So my problem is i cannot delete songs within playlists just from my iPod. I know that deleting the playlist on the left hand side navigation bar will still keep the songs there, it will only delete the actual playlist.
Also when i select a song(s) the edit menu is all greyed out except for copy.
Can anyone help please.

Try using the key combination Shift-Delete when deleting from a song from a playlist, this will delete it from the library as well.

Sorry you cannot easily rearrange i tune songs in playlist by dragging. How is the easiest way to change songs to different playlists?

Put them into the playlists you want and remove them from the playlists you want them in.
You don't actually move them anywhere (since a playlists is simply a list of songs from the library).
To reorder the songs, select the playlist and drag up/down where you want them.
You may need to select the first column header with the numbers.

I spent over an hour with Apple support, reinstalled itunes, restarted and rebooted computer. Networked with my laptop which is running 10.6.8 and itunes 10.4 and it can drag and drop. The final Apple support solution was to reinstall my operating system. I would prefer not to. Any other ideas?

After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.

Cannot drag-and-drop songs and playlists

I just got a new 2nd Gen Nano on Saturday. iTunes 7.0.1.8 updated the Nano to software 1.0.2. It will sync songs and playlists when connected to the computer. However, if I want to manually add songs/playlists, it won't let me. I cannot drag and drop from my library to my iPod. Also, all the songs are greyed out on my iPod list and it will not let me drag and drop within my iPod. They only way it will let me update songs and playlists is with the automatic option.
What is going on?

The songs are "greyed out" because you have the iPod set to transfer songs automatically. That is also why the padlock icon appears at the bottom of iTunes next to the space used/available.
If you want the songs to be bold and selectable/editable, then you need to change to manually managing your songs.

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Unsync all music and resync
- Delete all music by: go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music

Cannot drag songs from my music library to new playlist, nor re-arrange old playlists

OK. I have read a lot of old posts (2008-09) with the same problem with older versions, but I have a new iMac running 10.6 and iTunes 10.5.2 and I cannot drag songs from my library to a new playlist I've created. And now I cannot change the play order within a playlist. I have contacted Apple and they couldn't help me either. I even talked to a supervisor. He was stumpped. It looks like a bug has infected the system. I have an older iMac and iTunes on the same network, but it doesn't have the same prioblem. I believe if it works, don't update.
I have tried all the tricks I could find to work around this and no change.
This is so frustrating that a simple, but blessed manuver that I have loved is now broke.

Did you fail to maintain a backup? That is not good.
