Cannot reboot after kernel panic on Macbook Air 11

MBA 11 had kernel panic and gave me the "you must shut down" warning.  Now it won't reboot.  Hangs at gray screen with circle/slash in middle.
I have the external optical drive, but I don't have the installation disk or the flash key that came with it.
What are my options?

Never mind.  I fixed the issue via Safe Boot, then Restart.  Seems OK now.  I was a little panicky when I posted as I'd come off a bad day.

  • MacBook won't reboot after Kernel Panic!

Hi everyone! Been reading these boards for a while and it turns out now I need help.
I was simply browsing the internet (Safari 3) earlier when my one year old MacBook suddenly stopped working with a Kernel Panic. At the time of the crash I had my external USB drive and a USB-MIDI interface connected, both of which have never caused me any problems whatsoever.
I switched off my external HD and restarted my Mac, thinking this was just an exceptional error. Unfortunately, upon restart, my MacBook gave me the following error message:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0x003ABD33): Unable to find driver for this platform 'ACPI'.
And then went into Kernel Panic
I then decided to try and boot off my OSX startup disk. Thing is, I can't even get to this screen anymore. Subsequent restarts result in a black screen and the sleep light being lit, but nothing else seems to be working. The disk drive makes a short 'eject' noise which is usually followed by the boot sequence but it's as though the whole machine just freezes after making the sound. Sometimes it will go into some sort of loop and repeat the eject noise until I kill the power.
My MacBook (white) is just 13 months old (out of warranty), 2.16 Ghz C2D, 2 GB RAM. Running OSX 10.4.11 with all updates. Never had a problem with it until today. It's been looked after well and has had regular disk checks, permission repairs and running of maintenance scripts.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I have already tried unplugging everything, the problem is that I cannot even get to the startup process. The screen doesn't even turn gray, so I can't even boot up in safe mode.

  • Kernel Panic on Macbook Air

    Dear All,
I purchased my Macbook Air in the US in August 2011. Now it is  only less than two years. Starting from two weeks ago, my Mac air starts to have the four language restart box very often. I took it to the Apple Genuis Bar and got my whole system clean reinstalled. Update all the software. But the problem happened again, and the four lanague restart box changes to a five lanague restrat box.
I did not install windows in my mac.
The first time that the panic happened when I waked my Mac up from sleeping. Later, the panic happens randomly, sometimes when I use Word, sometimes when I use safari. After I retalled the whole system, the panic happened twice when I tried to install new software, such as Itune.
I would be very grateful if anybody can give me an idea how to resolve the problem.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. It did not work. I brought my mac air to a computer store. Restore OX system again. At the end of the restorement, the 5-lanague restart box appeared again. The technician told me that probably the hardware was broken down. He has seen six max air recently with kernel panics because of hardware problems.
I bought my mac air in the US in August 2011. Use it very carefully. Terribly, less than 2 years, it broke down.

  • Kernel Panics on MacBook Air

    Hi,
I open a thread in the 'Snow Leopard' discussions about an issue I'm trying to troubleshoot concerning kernel panics on a MacBook Air (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2361830 for details); it was suggested I try this forum too.
    Additonal notes:
    1) The issue started after 10.6.2 was released - problem with the smbfs kext in 10.6.2?
    2) The MacBook Air has had the OS re-installed after the issue started.
    3) The smb mount is to a Windows 2008 clustered file server.
    Any one seen similar behaviour?
    TIA

  • WORKAROUND/SOLVED: Kernel panic on Macbook Air 5,2 on Lion 10.7.5 on wake

Hi all. I had been getting plagued by kernel panics with my relatively new Macbook Air (which I otherwise have had no issues with) when I did the following in sequence:
While connected to a power supply, lock screen
    Close the lid
    Disconnect power supply
    Open the lid
For me, this seemed to have been caused by the Automatically adjust brightness option. To access it, go to System Preferences > Displays > Automatically adjust brightness, and uncheck the box. I also unchecked similar options that dim the screen before sleep in Energy Saver. This seems to have fixed it. I'm including the full kernel panic report -- if you're having problems with kernel panics, give it a try. I'm going to see for the next few days if this solves the issue. My guess is that this option and the display driver for this computer are really not playing well together in this version of Lion. I tried various other things:
    Disabling bluetooth
Using pmset to set the hibernatemode to 0 as well as 25
    Restting SMC
and none of them fixed it. This did, though, or at least it seems that way -- I am going to check for the next few days and see how it does. I am not running any third party kexts, though I do have a few third party launch agents for daemons, servers and such which have been installed via Homebrew. Feel free to comment. I am definitely a little underwhelmed by this kind of behavior coming from what is a several thousand dollar piece investment that is the most important piece of equipment for me to do my work on any given day, but if I can bypass it for now without too much of a loss in functionality, so be it.

  • Kernel panic on MacBook Air 5,2 (2012) Gotomeeting, Skype, audio

    Hi,
I'm experiencing Kernel Panics while using applications like GoToMeeting and Skype.
Using Console.app and reading the kernel panic log, I read something like:
    last loaded kext com.apple.driver.AppleUSBCDC
    and also these drivers:
    com.apple.driver.AudioAUUC
    com.apple.driver.Apple.ThunderboltDPInAdapter
    com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHD4000Graphics
How do I know which driver is the problem? Is there a way to report this kernel panic
to AppleCare? The MBA is on warranty
    Thanks
    Oliver

Is seems that the problem appears after enabling video calling, both in Skype and GotoMeeting.
Also, in the Apple Store the Genius migrated from a MBP 10.6 to the MBA, I don't know if he migrated drivers or something.
    Thanks
    Oliver

I cannot use Quicken on my new MacBook Air (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2) Any suggestions?  I love Quicken and it takes care of all my financial needs.

You can wait for Quicken to update (supposedly in the works) or you can switch to another application such as Quicken Essentials or another application of which there are several you will find at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
Otherwise you'll need to return your MBA and buy a slightly older model Mac that still runs Snow Leopard. Lion will not run any PPC-only applications such as Qucken or MS Office 2004.

  • After logging in, my macbook air screen is white

After logging into my MacBook Air, my screen is white (no menu bar etc...)?  Anyone know the problem?

Could be a problem with the LCD or it's cable, this seems like a hardware fault. I would go to the Apple store before its to late and before you run out of warranty (you get a 1 year warranty) There no way of fixing this without opening the computer which would void the warranty. If you have ran out of warranty i would go on eBay and look for a inverter, the cable or possibly the LCD apple would be able to tell you what it is without you having warranty and try the repair yourself or you could pay Apples overpriced repair.

  • Macbook Pro won't load past white loading screen when turned on after kernel panics

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro and recently its been having repeated kernel panics. In the past few days its been turning off every few minutes or so. yesterday it had one and now when I try to turn it on it doesn't load. I get the white loading screen with the apple logo and a loading bar underneath. But after the bar fills about 5% of the way (if that) the bar just disappears and the spinning loading icon just keeps going without anything happening (however long I leave it).
Please can someone give me some suggestions to fix this. Just a few things to note:
    a) I'm not great with computers so any fixes please explain in the most simple terms
    b) I have VERY important work files on there that are NOT backed up (big mistake I know), so please only suggest fixes that will not remove these Microsoft Word files. Guaranteeing the safety of my work is paramount with any suggestions.
    c) I may not have any of the disks which came with the Macbook Pro originally (though I may somewhere)
    d) I've read some other forum posts and it seems that I need to know the details of my operating system. I don't know these and have no way of accessing them on the computer (for obvious reasons). Its a late 2011 Macbook Pro if that is of any help.
A massive thank you to anyone who can suggest a fix to these, I shall be eternally grateful.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. The easiest way to deal with the problem is to boot from an external drive, or else to use either of the techniques in Steps 1b and 1c to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 6.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 9
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 10
Repeat Step 9, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 11
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a boot failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 12
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
