Cannot record movie with external iSight

I'm trying to use an external iSight camera to shoot some video on my MacBook Pro.
When I select the built-in iSight cam in QuickTime preferences, I'm able to capture video without any problems. When I select the external iSight cam and try to capture video, the green LED on top of the cam is lit but there is no output to the movie recording window.
If I click on the red record button, wait a few seconds, and then click it again, I get a pop-up that says: "Recording failed because no data was received."
The external iSight works just fine with both Skype video and iChat.

I have the same problem. I have a mac pro and i have an external iSight that doesn't work, however my laptop works fine with quicktime and its built in iSight. It works fine with iChat and iMovie, but i cant seem to make it work with Quicktime X or 7. I also get the same error. The Video feed from the iSight isn't showing in QT, the screen is all black, the counter stays at 00:00 after pressing the record button.
Ive heard of a fix, replacing this file: QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component
I just cant seem to find it anywhere.

  • Video recorded with external iSight has green dot in it.

    Anybody have any idea why any video recorded by my external iSight has a green dot in it. Almost seems like the power light is somehow being reflected into the housing.

    That's not very good news at all. If that's the problem I'm sure it has a lot to do with how hot it gets. I've even noticed it gets really warm and it hadn't been turned on in weeks. Just being plugged in made it hot.

  • Cannot hear audio from external iSight

    My machine is a 2007 Mac Pro octo, 16GB RAM, OS 10.5.2. Software Update reports the system as up-to-date.
    I just got an external iSight webcam. It's recognized by System Profiler as model 0x8, revision 1.0.3. (For unknown reasons it's reported as having four sub-units and a 200MB/sec connection speed.) iSight Updater reports the unit as up-to-date.
    Its video appears in iChat's (4.0.2) video preview window, and the video's quality is acceptable. The audio meter at the bottom of the preview displays a signal that varies in response to the sound level in the iSight's environment.
    The iSight appears in System Prefs/Sound as a FireWire input. The display there varies with the environment's sound level, and is responsive to changes in the Input Volume setting on the same screen.
    The iSight shows up in Audio MIDI Setup as a fixed one-channel, 16-bit, 48kHz audio source.
    The above tells me the iSight is producing an audio signal. Nothing I've been able to do, however, has permitted me actually to hear this audio signal. Whether I select the Mac Pro's built-in output, its built-in line output, or an external FireWire audio interface, I cannot hear the iSight's audio. Using these same configurations, however, I can hear audio from QuickTime Player or any other audio app I've tried, as well as all system alerts. The problem seems to lie in the signal's routing.
    I've followed this forum's maintenance and troubleshooting guidelines, including isolating the iSight on the FireWire bus and repairing permissions from a second 10.5.2 start-up drive.
    I've spent several hours searching for clues about what might be happening, but have exhausted the suggestions I could find.
    Does anyone have any further thoughts on how I might go about capturing this camera's audio signal?
    I'd appreciate any assistance that gets me there.
    Thanks.

    Hello Hominahomina
    You sound like an experienced Mac user, and you have tried most of the things that can cause this problem. You probably have already checked to be certain that your iChat > Video > Microphone Enabled has a check (tick) mark.
    If so, the next suspect I can suggest for your consideration is a possible hardware or software conflict with your "external FireWire audio interface". Disconnect it and test iSight audio again. If it still does not work, uninstall any software that was installed with your audio interface and try again.
    If that does not help, you can use any of the suggestions from How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional that you have not already tried.
    If, when you play back the file, you can hear the sound recorded with your iSight using iMovie (4 or later), QuickTime Pro, or some other app that can record audio, your iSight itself cannot be the problem. You may have a corrupted iChat preference file. Try this:
    • quit iChat if it is running
    • delete your Home(User)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ichat.plist file.
    A new .plist file will be created the next time you launch iChat, but deleting the .plist file deletes several iChat preference settings, so those you want to be different from the default values will need to be reset.
    If all else fails, your external iSight likely needs help form an Apple Service Technician. The external iSight you bought is likely not covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller is not providing you service guarantees or warranty, you may be want to check Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions. If your external iSight needs parts that you or your Service Technician cannot locate, http://www.synaptech.com may be able to help you obtain those that are still available.
    BTW, your posted system info shows Mac OS X (10.4.10), but you say that you repaired permissions from "a second 10.5.2 start-up drive." Hopefully, your posted info merely needs to be updated. Although we must start from a different disk to repair a disk, I am sure you know that we repair permissions on a startup disk using its disk utility when started from that drive. For benefit of less experienced readers, don't repair permissions for a disk with one Mac OS version (like 10.4.x) when started up from a different Mac OS like 10.5.x because doing so can cause serious permissions problems.

  • IMac can I swap builtin isight with external isight??

    I need the ability to record other parts of the room for emails and short imovie clips, and the built in isight on my iMac is about worthless unless I want to pick up the whole thing and carry it around or else have everyone try to run over in front of the computer every time I want to record, so I was wanting to buy a regular cabled iSight and connect it instead if that would work, but dont want to waste money if there is no way to disable the built-in to allow that. I have tried using my Quickcam that works with my Powerbook and iBook, but the iMac wont recognize it and instead forces the stupid builtin isight to come on in every application instead. Does anyone know for sure if I go buy an external isight that it will work to overrride the builtin or at least allow me to choose between it and the built-in? Thanks.

    Hi,
    As Alex says the answer is yes.
    All apps will tend to default to the Firewire connection.
    However iChat has an extra Drop down appear in iChat > Preferences > Video Section to select the camera of choice.
    In PhotoBooth there is no choice it defaults to Firewire.
    Also have a look at this Utility

  • No sound with external isight

    Hi just upgraded to lion to find that I get no sound from my external isight.
    Works fine with skype etc, but just no sound with facetime.
    Apple please fix, worked great in snow leopard.

    (1) External iSight's firewire mic is not supported in the Lion version of the FaceTime app.
      http://support.apple.com/kb/SP629
    The Lion versions of FaceTime require USB mics.
    (2) For more info and possible workarounds, click here to search for "external AND iSight AND FaceTime AND Lion" (without the quotation marks.)  One example on this topic is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message/16827069#16827069
    (3) You can send feedback directly to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
    You will not get a response, but you can be certain
    that the responsible Apple people will see your input
    for consideration in FaceTime product development.

  • Cannot load movie with subtitles and export in QuickTime 10 / Os X Lion

    Since Os X Lion, when trying to load a movie (DivX) in QuickTime 10 at the same time that the related subtitles file (.srt) is in the same folder as the movie, QT 10 suggests to use QT 7. QT 10 cannot load the movie with subtitles (in Snow Leopard everything was OK). Q& 7 is useless too because it cannot export movies to another format.
    Anybody has a solution for this? Thanks for your help!

    I do this because Perian don't work with QT10 on Mac OS X Lion:
    -Try to open .avi movie with QT 10;
    -OS X ask you to open on QT 7;
    -Donwload QT 7 and install it. It will be installed on "Utilities";
    -Download Perian but don't install it;
    -Mount Perian, and click "Show Package Contents"
    -Go to "Contents"->"Resources"->"Components"->"CoreAudio" and copy to Desktop "A52Codec.zip" and unzip it;
    -Go to"Contents"->"Resources"->"Components" and copy to Desktop "Perian.zip" and unzip it;
    -Go to "Contents"->"Resources"->"Components"->"CoreAudio"->Quicktime" and copy to Desktop "AC3MovieImport.zip" and unzip it;
    -Then copy all packages with ".component" extention to /Library/Quicktime/;
    -Then you can run all movies on QT 7.
    Or,
    -Install MPlayerX;
    Or,
    -Install VLC;
    Or,

    Does anyone have any ideas that could help us? I am having her download skype to see if thats more successful but this is going to be our primary mode of contact for the next year and I am REALLY worried. We are both using external iSights and we tried audio with and without them plugged in.
    Everytime either of us tries anything it gets the the stage where it says "connecting" then gives the error message.
    Any help would be really appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Stephen Miller

    Hi,
    Hotels are notoriously difficult for iChat because of the way
    1) the ports are not always open
    2) the number of people sharing the connection.
    For Mail you probably have POP and SMTP server set for one location and the hotel's ISP is not letting you go to those though their server. Web Mail may be the only way around this.

    You may not be able to do much about the Bandwidth/user issue.
    I take it you have done the Quicktime setting as you have posted before.

  • Recording video using external iSight and audio using wired input

    I would like to be able to record video using an external iSight camera I have from my old powerbook, but I don't want the audio to record through the internal microphone...I want it to record through a wired input coming off a mixer...is this possible?

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
    "..is this possible?.." ..I don't think so. By connecting an external FireWire iSight camera, iMovie expects both the vision and the sound to come in down the same FireWire cable.
    If you need to use a separate audio input, you may be able to do it by connecting a FireWire-capable camcorder (..a tape-based miniDV or HDV camcorder which uses a FireWire connection to attach to a Mac..) and then feeding your mixer's output to the camcorder's external-mic input ..at very low volume, of course, so that you don't wreck the camcorder's input.
    This entails using a camcorder which does have an external-mic (or line) input. That way, the picture from the camcorder will go straight into iMovie, as will the audio which is being fed into the camcorder ..thus both reaching iMovie via the camera's FireWire connection.

  • Static with external iSight & Mac Pro

    I've got an external iSight that works fine with my ibook G4 but produces annoying static or noise when I use it with my new Mac Pro. The picture has a closely spaced series of white horizontal lines down the right hand side. You can see a screencapture here:

    Has anybody else seen this? Does anyone have any solutions?

    The camera is connected directly - the computer is a Mac Pro though, not a macbook.
    I've since tried it on another G4 based mac and the camera is fine there, as well as on another intel based machine which gives the same sort of noise in the picture.

  • Audio problems with external iSight

    Hi guys,
    I have been racking my brain with a problem that I have (I think) narrowed down to my external iSight.
    It initially showed up in Skype, but have confirmed in iChat also.
    The problem is no audio. I do have video in both apps.
    I have:
    1. deleted the com.apple.audio.devicesettings.plist
    2. reinstalled OS via Combo update
    3. unpluged firwire multiple times - plus restart
    4. repaired permissions - multiple times
    5. Checked that iSight is recognized in System profiler>FireWire
    6. deleted Skype and reinstalled an earlier version (2.7.0.330)
    7. other things that are a blur now!!!
    One key may be that every time I restart, my sound preferences>input is alway reset to lowest (off) position - even though I reset each time - even after deleting the .plist file above.
    This outfit has been set upon this machine for years and never a problem until now.
    Whew...
    Any ideas?

    Jim,
    Tried both. Neither worked.
    Tomorrow I will try an even older audio pref file.
    I do not have another firewire device to trade out to check the connection, but since I have video, and confirmation in System Profiler, I am supposing it is good.
    That sound input is still "resticking" at 0 at every restart.
    Any other suggestions gentlemen? or Ladies...
    Thanks for the thought process.

    You're welcome, John.
    Here are three more:
    (1) Use Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then download and apply the 10.5.8 COMBO update:
      http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
    Repair permissions IMMEDIATELY again after the restart that finishes the installation.
    Then test again to see if it helps the problem.
    (2) If properly applying the Combo Update does not resolve your problem, you may have problems within the basic system software.
    Reinstall OS X 10.5 (Leopard). If you need help, see the instructions in the user manual that came with your Mac if it originally shipped with Leopard. If you Mac came with an earlier version of Mac OS X, follow the instructions that came with your Leopard Upgrade DVD.
    After reinstalling 10.5.x, you can update to the latest version (10.5.8) Leopard in one update step by using the process in (1) above. Then check again for proper function of your system settings.
    (3) If none of the suggestions you get resolve your problem and you do not want to continue reconfiguring your settings each time you restart, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

  • With OS X Yosemite 10.10.1, cannot record video with the iMac's built-in FaceTime HD camera. Cannot find the "Import" button in the toolbar.

    Just updated to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and cannot find the "Import" button in the toolbar to record video on my iMac's Face Time HD built-in camera.  Trying to follow the steps found under "iMovie (2013): Record video with the FaceTime HD camera" on apple support posting but it seems to me that those were posted for another OS version.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Hello Triunfo,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    If you are using the current version of iMovie, 10.0.6, you can follow the directions in the help article linked to below to import using the built-in FaceTime HD camera.

  • Manual focus while recording movies with sony HX100V?

    does anybody know whether one can manually focus while recording movies (also in 60p) with the hx100V?
    wondering - that would really make a difference.
    thank you very much!
    dom

     Hi domi,
    After doing a bit of research on this it does seem to be possible to use the manual focus feature of this camera while shooting video. When you turn the mode dial to Video the camera defaults to Intelligent Auto mode, which will not allow you to manually focus your videos. While the camera is set to shoot videos you need to go into your menu settings and change the camera's mode from Intelligent Auto to Scene mode.
    I hope this helps!

  • Can I record movies with iChat backgrounds?

    I was curious if it was possible to record movies in Leopard using the cool new backgrounds like Yosemite, Aquarium? If so how?

    Open PhotoBooth.
    Click the left hand tab for Video (looks vaguely like a piece of film)
    Select Effect.
    Press record Button.
    Talk to your self.
    Is this what you meant ?
    (Also not sure on Time limit if there is one)
    The File is put in Home folder/Picture/PhotoBooth and called movie (number).mov which is a Quicktime Movie
