Cannot record using Audio Line In

Using my Mac Book Air, I cannot record (in Garage Band) using Line In. When I go to System Preferences, Sound, Input... LINE IN is not an option. The only input source is an internal microphone.
Does Mac Book Air have a LINE IN option? If so, how do I switch to that?

Hi,
according to the specs http://support.apple.com/kb/SP8 a MacBook Air does not have an Audio Line-In only the internal microphone.
Only chance you have is to get an USB-connected audio device like iMic from Griffin for example http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic

  • Cannot record using microphone - SB Audigy 2 ZS [E9

    Hello,
I have a microphone hooked up to the microphone plug in my soundcard. Although I can hear audio through the mic, when using windows recorder, I cannot record anything!
Also, when I plug the mic into the line-in, I can't hear anything through my speakers.
I can record?when I select "What U Hear," but nothing else. I've updated the drivers, but that didn't help.
    Any input is appreciated!

I also wanted to add that I have selected the microphone option from the recording mixer and I have it set at a reasonable input level. I also have it unmuted from the playback mixer and have that level set at a reasonable level.

  • Can't get sound to play using audio line in

I am trying to play audio from my iPhone by connecting mini plug cable to the headphone jack and the audio line-in mini plug.  The input level indicator in System Preferences > Sound is showing that audio is playing but I don't hear sound.  I do have sound playing through my Mac Pro with iTunes, steaming audio/video, etc., so I know it works.  Any ideas how I can get sound to play audibly using line-in?

Another option not involving any additional software - see:
    http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/87046-play-line-in-through-macbook-pro-in ternal-speakers/
Just came across this problem myself (10.8) and that solution works great - just open Quicktime, there under File: choose a "new audio recording". In the upcoming controller switch up the volume.
Weard that it works this way but nowhere else in the sound System Control panels ...

  • Possible to use audio line out and in simultaneously ?

In the current version of MacBook Pro Retina is it possible to use the analog audio line out and line in both simultaneously ? That is playback as well as record analog audio at the same time.
Does anyone know what is the audio hardward platform (Codec, DAC, ADC, etc..) in this machine ?
    Thanks!

    Air has a headset jack.
    You can use a splitter
Mics should be USB capable for best results, almost all headset mics are junk quality.
then monitoring or listening thru the headphones
consider using a PRO MIC , such as an Audio Technica AT2020 USB

or better still use one of these with pro XLR mics:

  • DV6-3120us cannot record streaming audio

There is a program I like that streams it's audio on the Internet but is at an hour that is very inconvenient for me to listen to. They do not offer any downloadable file. In the past I have used Audacity to record the program and then listen the next day. I've done this with both Compaq and HP desktops and laptops as well as other manufacturers.
I have not been able to do it with my current HP laptop [DV6-3120us [AMD Turion II P-540 Dual Core 2.40GHz]] which has Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with 4GB RAM.
I am currently using Audacity 2.0.0. I have followed the instructions at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/faq_i18n?s=recording&i=streaming and have also tried http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_recording_computer_playback_on_windows.html. In both cases I get nothing but a static hum but none of the audio I can hear playing through my speakers. I tried it while having my Bluetooth headset connected but it made no difference. I have tried recording other streaming audio in case the stream was being blocked from recording but could not record any of them. I also tried recording audio generated by the computer and could not. I have hooked up both a CD player and a tapedeck to the line-in and microphone jacks and was able to record the sounds.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hI jIM66, Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the sound and recording on your computer.  I have found a updated Audio driver for you that may resolve the issue.  Please click on the link that I have provided and do the download.  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4308... Hi Guys I have been using the microphone in on my g550 to record music and when I record it any replay it the music sounds quite poor quality. Are there any internal presets I can change to improve this?

  • Using Audio-line out in MacPro

    Hi,
I have recently switched to Mac from Windows. I have a good Altec Lansing speakers which I would like to continue using for sometime.
Normally the speakers contains black and green connectors and you connect the green to the audio out.
But connecting the green connector to the audio out in MacPro doesn't bring any sound.
What is this audio out? Can I use my Windows speakers with it?
The speakers works fine when I connect to the Headphone Jack in the front.
    Any info is useful.
    Cheers.
    MacPro Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Getting the audio out to work the first time can at times be a little fiddly although once you have it working it's no problem after that. What I needed to do is, in the Sound System Preference, is to change the Output between the built-in speakers and the line out a few time while changing the system volume (via the keyboard) up and down inbetween.
I've never figured out why it's sometime like this but once you've fixed it its not a problem afterwards.

  • Using audio line in

    Greetings everyone,
I'm trying to use the audio in minijack on my tibook. Should I be able to plug into the jack with a stereo mini-plug? I'm not able to insert the mini-plug, and I'm reluctant to force it.
The audio in jack has a white (nylon?) insert that prevents me from inserting the mini-plug. Does your audio in port have a similar collar?
    Thanks for your thoughts.
    Respectfully,
    Tony

    Hi, Tony.
I'm trying to use the audio in minijack on my tibook. Should I be able to plug into the jack with a stereo mini-plug?
    Yes, a 1/8" plug.
I'm not able to insert the mini-plug, and I'm reluctant to force it.
Your reluctance is prudent and well-founded.
The audio in jack has a white (nylon?) insert that prevents me from inserting the mini-plug. Does your audio in port have a similar collar?
No, and the fact that yours does suggests that someone has inserted something into the port that doesn't belong there, or perhaps has broken off a plug in it.
You might try this approach to removing whatever is in the port, bearing in mind that your Tibook should be powered off, disconnected from AC power, and the main battery removed first. Find a clean, sharply pointed drywall screw that is just a little too thick to slide freely into the white plastic collar in the port. Carefully thread it into the collar with your fingers just far enough for the threads on the screw to get a purchase on it — not far enough to touch any of the contacts inside the port. Then see whether you can gently pull out the collar and whatever else may be attached to it.
If that fails, you would be well advised to forget about the port, and instead buy a Griffin iMic USB sound card, which will give you line- and microphone-level input and headphone and speaker output options through one of your Powerbook's USB ports. The profoundly unappealing alternative is to replace the Powerbook's main logic board, to which the line-in port is soldered.

  • HELP: Cannot Record Streaming Audio w/Audigy Plati

    Here's the setup:
Windows XP w/SP2 and all hotfixes
Playback and record enabled, everything else works fine
Have tried using TotalRecorder and WinAmp, get nothing but an empty file
All "mutes" are unchecked in sounds and audio section of config.
My gut feeling is that there is something hidden in WindowsXP, but I am at my wit's end with this!
I would deeply appreciate any assistance - Steve

No, I meant in the Windows master volume control recording drop-down list. You should be selecting "What-U-Hear."

  • Cannot Record Audio using Logic Express 7.0.0 on 13" Macbook

Help! I have Logic Express 7.0.0 and am running it in on an Intel model Macbook 1.8Ghz, 13''. I do not have an external soundcard. Will this version of Logic Express allow me to record live audio if I do not have an external soundcard? I only want to be able to record & edit a single audio track, so thought I might be able to. I cannot seem to get the 'R' (Record) button to appear despite activating it in the >View< section, so I cannot arm any tracks, and so cannot record. Is there a bug with this version of Logic and the Intel Macs? Do I need to update? If so, what would be the best way to update?

  • Cannot record through line-in in bootcamp MBP late summer '09 model

cannot record through line-in in bootcamp MBP late summer '09 model
audio source (mp3 player) <3.5mm male input-------------3.5mm male input>  line-in to macbook pro late summer 2009 model bootcamp windows xp sp2
when i select microphone in the audio panel - it works
when i select line-in and plug in the 3.5mm jack input to 3.5mm jack input to a fm radio for ex. it doesn't work
how do i make the line-in work?
i remember that when i first installed mac osx sl and windows xp bootcamp - the first couple of times around when partitioning the hd - the line-in worked a couple of times, in between times somewhere along the line i made some change to the spdif settings ?? or driver / to make the red light that comes on in the line-in jack go away -  the other method was to use a toothpick to push a tiny button inside the jack, did that once -but the redlight came back again after a restart on bootcamp side.
    thanks in advance,
    -r

Although I don't use it, the Line-Input jack should require a signal about 40dB higher than what a microphone alone puts out. If your cable only adapts the connector and does not provide amplification, I'm not surprised you get nothing. If you are lucky, you MIGHT get a low signal by going into System Prefs/Sound/input/line-in and turning the input level slider all the way up. But the real answer to to get a mike preamp or mixer, or a mike with line-level output. Some products take a mike input and convert it to digital into the USB port.

  • I cannot get the audio to work using my new P221 HP monitor. Can someone please help me?

I wrote once before but I must have mislabeled my message.  Haven't been able to even find my question much less any replies.  I purchased an HP 221 Monitor with installed speakers,  I am a novice at computers and didn't really know what I would need to install the monitor.  I find that I can connect the VGA cable with no problem.  But th DVI-D cable cannot be installed on my computer due to no connection there.  My computer is an HP Model P 6600Z, desktop PC.  It is operating on windows 7 and browser is Internet Explorer.   I purchased an adapter with a female cable adapter to attach to the monitor cable and then I connected it to my PC using a the USB supplied with the
adapter.  It still doesn't work.  I guess I can install external speakers but the main reason I bought this monitor was becasue it has internal speakers.  Thanks.

I am sorry for the confusion.  The reason I asked about the speaker bar is that I can't find any information that shows built-in speakers on your monitor.  I have looked everywhere, including in the HP specifications.
Here is the Back I/O panel (Input / Output) for your computer:
    Figure 2: Back I/O panel
1 - Video Graphics Adapter port
    2 - USB 2.0: 4
    3 - RJ45 Network (LAN)
    4 - Audio: Line in
    5 - Audio: Front speaker/Line out
    6 - Audio: Microphone in
The way that I have always connected speakers is to the port labeled # 5 (Audio: Front speaker/Line Out).  This port allows sound to be sent to speakers.  The VGA port is for video only.  There is no audio capability.  The only connection that sends Audio and Video is the HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) connectors.
This is the type of connector that I would expect to see coming from your speakers:
The male one at the bottom of the picture.
Please check the monitor carefully to assure that there are actually speakers built-in.  I just don't want us to continue fighting a problem that doesn't exist.  There may have been some incorrect information in the advertisement that you read.
