Cannot reinstall OS X on brand new Late 2012 27" iMac

Using either a flash drive or trying to install Mountain Lion from the store I get the same message that informs me that OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer. I would assume they have some sort of custom build for this machine currently but this doesn't make it easy to quickly deploy a new machine with a clean install. I am currently using a recovery disk that I made using recovery disk assistant which will work OK but it still doesn't answer why we are not allowed to install the supported OS from scratch.

The Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build that it's not available from the App Store. However, you can erase the disk and reinstall OS X Mountain Lion without any problem. To do it:
1. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into Recovery.
2. Open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
3. Close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X.
This issue will be fixed in 10.8.3

  • Headphone jack not working on brand new late 2012 27" iMac

Just purchased the new late 2012 27" iMac. Have tried 3 pairs of headphones, all work with my iPhone but when plugged into back of iMac, they do not show up in Sound>Output as an option. Only internal speakers and Apple TV.
I have pushed...hard. Not the issue.
Tired changing Audio Midi settings to 32-bit floating. Didn't do anything...
    Any thoughts?
    Thx

    What you did at last?
This is happening to me and I'm very disappointed and frustrated!
Is the first time I tried to use a headphones and the stupid machine doesn't work!
I already reseted PRAM and SMC also updated OS to 10.8.4
    Is a HW problem?
Do I have to go to the store and lost ALL the time I already invested in SW install and file moving from my old laptop?
By the way I can see the light when I unplug the heardphones.
Before some help desk robot asks, YES, I tried 3 pair of phones ALL of them work well in my Vostro 3550, Samsung S3 and in my Nexus 7.
    Some light here please!

Hi there guys! I´m very, very, VERY close to buy a full configuration iMac (the late 2012 27" model) but I have reed in different forums that Adobe Premier Pro CS6 and other applications from Adobe such as After Effects DO NOT support the graphic cards found in the new iMacs....
    is this true??????
i really wouldn´t understad the logic behid the decission of picking a graphic card that is not supported by one of the leading video editing sofrware used today.... specially when this computer is suppoused to be an Editing Animal....
I hope this rumor is not real..... then I can be just... really happy and get my new desktop computer and work, work, work, work
    thanks for your attention

Hi there Daniel, thanks for paying attention to this subject. Today I got an answer from Larry Jordan from his blog (I believe he is one of the "videoguys" from http://videoguys.com and he said that actually adobe does not support those GPU that we will find in the new late 2012 iMacs. However it seems there is a way to make that work out.....
here is his review on his new iMac, at the very botton you will see comments from people and his answers... one of the last coments is mine regarding this subject, this is what I asked and his answer:
mGabo Jan 18, 2013 08:50Hi there Larry, I reed in your other post on your iMac that Adobe didn´t support the Nvidia graphic cards found in this model, I have been asking in forums about this and people say Adobe does supports them……Do you know if Adobe now works fine with these cards?
Larry Jan 18, 2013 11:10When I contacted Adobe about this a couple months ago, just after the release of the new iMacs, I was told that Adobe did not support the graphics card at that time. There is, however, a workaround, which I’m hoping to write up this weekend.Larry

  • Magic Trackpad won't work with Magic Mouse on brand new 2011 27" i5 iMac

I have a brand new 2011 27" i5 iMac which I bought with Snow Leopard pre-loaded. Naturally, I included the new Magic Trackpad in my purchase, and though there were some problems with the device in SL - such as it going haywire without explanation - it generally worked, although battery levels were erratic (one day 80%, then an hour later 42%, then 80% again).
When I installed Lion I did a clean install after backing up to Time Machine - and a Super Dupered external drive. I had some difficulties trying to install Lion from an external flash drive so I deleted again and reinstalled SL, then reinstalled over the SL install I did (with no other software except Mac OS X 10.6.8 and other system updates to facilitate install). Rather than copying apps from my old SL drive, I downloaded fresh copies and reinstalled one by one. I don't use a lot of apps apart from Microsoft Office, browsers and iLife and have not installed any additional scripts, extensions or add-ons (like USB Overdrive). It's a pretty clean install.
Since then, although I'm generally happy with Lion, the Magic Trackpad won't work! It does work for a little while with basic gestures - mainly moving the cursor and scrolling - then it gives up the ghost and loses connectivity. I have done the following:
Disconnected and reconnected the MTP after turning it on and off. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Shut the computer down, pulled out the plug, waited two minutes, then started up again. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Run Onyx, shut down computer, then pulled out plug (see above).
Checked options in Universal Access, shut off "Ignore other devices when trackpad in use" (or whatever the option is). MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
Turned off the Magic Mouse. MTP works for about two minutes, goes crazy then no response.
But none of this seems to work! I know the MTP is connected because I can see it in the BT menu in the menu bar and also in System Preferences. I have noticed since upgrading that my permissions - which when I bought the computer were totally clean - now run lines and lines about "Library/Core Services" so I am unsure whether this is related. I also notice a lot of people are in the same boat as me, which makes me wonder if it's either a hardware issue or a release issue - after a week or so of totally silent running, my 2TB Hitachi HDD started up with the grumbly tum. I'd really appreciate any tips from anyone out there!

    Hi, marksaner
You could try installing the latest version of the Synaptics driver. Synaptics is the company that makes the UltraNav driver and drivers for many other computer brands. This driver should have the same functionality as the UltraNav driver, so there's no worry there. You can find the driver here.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • I just bought a new late 2013 27" iMac base model from the Apple Store.

Hi, I just recently purchased the new late 2013 27" iMac from the Apple store, base model that is $1999.00. This is my very first iMac and I was wondering if this is a good first time iMac users PC? My wife will be mainly composing music on it. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Yes, it's perfect. FWIW, next time you plan to buy a computer ask this question before you purchase it, not after.

  • Clean install of Mountain Lion on the late 2012 27" iMac

I used migration assistant to move all my stuff from my late 2009 iMac to my new late 2012 iMac. Now I would rather do a clean install and manually move stuff over. How can I do a clean install when there is no reinstall disk that came with the new iMac?

There's a set of reinstallation tools on another partition of your drive, or your system can download and boot from the tools across the Internet.Take a look here:

  • Randomly shutting down late 2012 27" iMac, 3.2 GHz i5 processor.  16 out of 32 GB ram (crucial).  Tried the PRAM and SMC, both did not work.

Hello,  I have a late 2012 27" iMac.  Its a 3.2 GHz i5 processor.  I originally upgraded my ram to 32 GB and was running like a champ for over a year.  Then, it started to randomly turn off no matter what I was doing.  I took it to the apple store and they said it was the ram.  So I ordered 16 GB of ram from Crucial that matched what they said my computer would need. I got it in last week and installed it and it still turns off randomly. I have tried the PRAM and SMC resets and the computer will run like a champ for 15-20 mins then turns off. I would love any help, advice or possible solutions as I am by no means a computer wiz. Thanks in advanced!

Very true - and the tests they do at the store are far better than the AHT. As well, Apple does not tell you where it puts the RAM - they just tell you to add RAM in the empty slots, LOL. Your About this Mac > Memory should show your two modules next to one another (which, as I've decided to "name" them would be slots 1 and 3 as showing from the top as you are looking at it with all the slots facing you (the bottom being towards the bottom of the display). The odd thing (to me) is that the 'about this mac' window still shows the same arrangement even though the modules are now placed vertically. In mine (with two rows of two slots side by side), it shows the OEM RAM in the top and the additional RAM I added on the bottom (which is exactly how the slots are arranged):
And, one more thought - maybe way off - the late 2009/mid 2010/early 2011 iMacs had problems with adding a full complement of third party RAM (they were ok with all OEM or a lesser amount of third party RAM - that is why mine only has 12 GB rather than the supported 16 GB). There were several very lengthy threads about this; I will try to find one of them which I had bookmarked (I can't find my bookmarks in this new iteration here)...

  • Windows 8 on late 2012 27" iMac?

    Hi Guys,
I m planning to install windows 8 on my late 2012 27" iMac, i read online that people have over heating issues with their macs when gaming via bootcamp. The new slim late 2012 iMacs are suppose to be better in cooling, anyone with these new slim iMacs can give me feedback? are the new iMacs handling the gaming via bootcamp better then the old ones? is there any safety precaution i should take like placing a external usb fan near the iMac? feedback would be great.

  • Image Persistence On Late 2012 27" iMacs

    Hi.
I'm currently on my second late 2012, 27" iMac. I returned the first one I bought because of uneven color from top to bottom of the display, as well as a very readable image of my browser's address bar that seemed to not want to vanish from the display against a plain dark gray background every time I closed the browser. It was a persistent image after using the browser for only five minutes. It was pretty bad, and I exchanged the computer for a replacement.
The replacement model is much better. The colors are pretty even, and if I leave a web page open for a long time, the ghost image on the display generally takes about ten minutes to fade completely away, against the plain dark gray background that I've set as my desktop wallpaper. On my previous model, the image of the address bar never really left. It was, like... permanently burned in.
I've read an awful lot in these forums about image persistence, and also the help articles that Apple published on this site about it. I'm aware that Apple acknowledges this as normal behavior for their displays.
I still have a couple of days left, where I can return this replacement unit for another iMac, or get a refund. My question to the community is this: Is what I have now, as good as it gets? I'd hate to take this one back, and exchange it for another that's only the same, or possibly worse.
Mostly, I'm concerned about residual artifacts from desktop wallpapers, recently closed application windows, etc., interfering with accurate perception of, say, a photo that I open to edit or something. It's a little worrisome. I don't plan to use blank wallpaper forever, or wait ten or twenty minutes after browsing the web before proceeding to work on graphics.

Although I don't own a imac from reading these forums I'd have to say what you now have is as good as it gets. So that leaves 2 options.
    Live with it.
Or return it for a refund and move on to some other mac computer or something else.

  • Dead Fusion drive, brand new Late 2013 iMac. No status update from Apple.

Can someone let me know who I shouyld contact with regards to my below issue? I've spent hours upon hours trying to get my new iMac back from Apple store here in New York city, no success.
    Purchased a new Late 2013 model 21" build-to-order iMac 3 months ago >
Hard drive partition corrupt within first month which required in store HD partition correction flash via genius bar >
HD hardware failed next month >
Genius appointment Feb 6 2014, was told new fusion drive was required and would take "2-3 days" >
7 days later I went in-store for status and was told they had no info and would call me with an update >
3 more days I go in store again after no call, still no status update >
Forced to purchase a new cheaper PC so I could keep working from home >
Now its 13-14 days later, I just spent over 2 more hours with Apple Support and still no results, now waiting for store Manager (“Matt”, W 14th St store in NYC) to call me. Its been 5 hours since my call this morning.
I have purchased a new computer as I work from home and cannot be without a computer fofr my job. This is ridiculous, I demanded a refund yet was told because I purchased from an authorized reseller (Tekserve - tekserve.com ) and not an actual Apple store, they cannot refund. Tekserve receipt states all support must go through Apple as it’s a build-to-order system. I paid over $1800 for this iMac (2.7GHZ quad core, 16gb RAM, Fusion drive etc..) a few months ago and it’s been the worst experience I’ve ever had with Apple in 7 years. Pi55ed off. Give me a new exact model iMac today OR give me a refund.
Apple employee, Look up the below repair ID, it'll have my cell phone number attached. Call me anytime with a solution. I've spent hours and hours on calls with Apple support with no results, no return calls from store manager.
    Serial: D25LG******* / Repair ID R114745188

Thats my only option, I shall visit the store this evening and demand to see the manager.
Buying from an Authorized Apple reseller should never mean I get any less support than buying direct from Apple.
You're totally correct on both counts, when you ask to speak to the manager, even though you may be tempted to be angry the best approach to handling the situation is by being; calm, organzied and persistent. Bring all receipts, include names, times, places of who you spoke to and state your case.
I'm sure your issue will be addressed. In addition if you are in the US you can always call Apple's customer relations phone number, I believe the current number is 800-767-2775.
    Good luck.

  • After starting up a brand new 10.8.2 iMac it linked to an older iMac, 15 hrs later I have a duplicate screen of 10.6.8; how to get rid of all that down load and free up the new iMac?

After starting up a brand new imac it down loaded off an older 10.6.8 running imac for 15 hiurs, now I have a duplicate of the older; how to dump all the older stuff and get my new imac?

OK. Log into your migrated account. Open Users & Groups preferences, click on the lock icon and authenticate.
Click on the Add [-] button and create a new account. Make it an Administrative account and name it whatever you want (but not the same as your current account) and set it up to login automatically. Log out of your current account and log into the new account. Now, select your migrated account and click on the Delete [-] button to remove it. Select the bottom option to delete immediately. DO NOT select the option to erase securely.
Now, you can choose to migrate again from your old account but be more selective of what you migrate or you can simply copy over the data you want.

  • New late 2012 iMac with Mountain Lion - won't open Reader Library

Everything transferred from my old iMac (2009) to my new iMav (late 2012), except for the READER LIBRARY.  It won't open on the desktop, and it won't open or recognize my Sony e-reader.

I'm about to attempt the same thing -- migrate everything from my old iMac (running 10.6.8) to a brand-new iMac (running Mountain Lion).
Still using FCP7, with no intention of switching to FCP X.
Should Migration Assistant work for me?  Would updating my old iMac to Mountain Lion first make a difference?  (I've already purchased it for my laptop, just haven't used it on my iMac).
