Cannot reinstall osx on Mac Mini!?!?

I bought a refurb Mac Mini from apple in january. I'm trying to put a clean install on it because I would like to sell it. Whenever I try the install give me the error "This software cannot be installed on the computer." I am using the OSX install CD's that came with my Mac Mini

I also bought a Mac Mini in January 2006 and have the same problem. I can't install from my OS X from my original Mac Mini install CD. Mine is labeled "Mac Mini". So I don't understand. Is it because it is a REFURBISHED Mac Mini? But I bought it from the Apple Store. What I did notice is that Apple changes the S/N. When I later tried to upgrade my iLife to '06 my Mini wasn't listed in Apple's valid serial numbers. Spent close to an hour with them on the phone and finally they gave up and sent me the new version for free. So, getting back on track, anyone know how I can get my Mac up and running again? I also erased the disk tosee if that was the problem. Good thing I have a backup on my firewire disk. But I don't have a Mac to work on and I need to work! Appreciate any help.

I ran into this problem before and restting NVRAM and SMC solved the issue. Might have just been luck for me, but its worth a shot.
Reset SMC control+shift+option and power while MacBook Pro is off and plugged into power adapter

I cannot get the new mac mini to wake from sleep and trigger the displays - this is the second mac mini I have had and both have had the same issues. It worked before on my macbook extremely well...
Using 2 displays, connected via HDMI and thunderbolt
Been on to support a number of times now - is anyone experiencing the same issues?

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
    kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

  • Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups

Reinstalled maverick on Mac mini 2010 now can't restore files from previous backups can't even roll back to previous setup

    This is typical Mavericks.
Was the old backup taken from Mavericks install?
Did you already start TM from the new install and thus totally foul up and corrupt your old backup?
You will need to try migrate assistant.. and if that fails you will need to manually pull your files from the old backup if you can still access them.

  • Disk Utility Failed, Mac HD not working and cannot reinstall OSX

    Hi,
    I am totally frustrated.
Was working on capturing video using Final Cut Pro and the application froze. After repeated attempts, I kept getting the message to restart the G5.
I tried reinstalling Final Cut Pro - and installation failed. I ran disk utility first aid and found an error on the Mac HD (Startup Disk). So I restarted machine from the DVD (pressing the C button when restarting) and ran disk repair from the DVD OSX Utility. Still got the error that "First Aid Failed" Disk utility stopped repairing Macintosh HD because the following error was encountered. The underlying task reported failure on exit. HFS volume checked 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error. Repair attempted on volume 1, 1 volume could not be repaired.
Then I tried reinstalling OSX onto a second internal SATA HD. Installation failed. Try installing again.
So now what do I do?
I am running Mac OSX 10.4.9
    Please help...urgent.
    Thanks
    MQ

Thanks for the answer...that's what I was thinking.
The following are various issues I am considering maybe the cause:
    1. Memory - I installed 2GB a few weeks ago - third party.
    2. External HDs - I installed an external Maxtor 1.5TB drive 3 days ago.
    3. I live in Africa - and power frequently gets disrupted - even though the machine is on a "solatek" (power stabilizer and high end protector against spikes) - 2 days ago my UPS was down and for repairs - and we had three power outtages.
Lastly, as I mentioned I live in Africa - Mombasa - Apple tech support is almost non-existent here...so I am hoping I can resolve this without having to ship it abroad.
    Please help and thank you...

  • I can use my apple id and password to log in here, but they are not accepted to reinstall os on mac mini.  I've changed passwords, still no luck After 3 hours I'm ready to go back to windows!

I can use my Apple ID to log in here but I can not use it to reinstall IOS on my Mini.  What gives this has been 3 hours.  I've changed the password twice, I can log into the forum but the App store say unknown error!

What makes you think an Unknown Error has anything to do with your password....
Also, a Mac Mini runs OSX not IOS. Be that as it may, a simple Google search would have led you to this support article for "iTunes Unknown Error":

Hope you are able to find a solution!

Has anyone already had this problem ?
Many many thanks in advance for your help

  • How to install OSX on mac mini G4 when no OS is present?

hello, I am very new to all of this. Here is some back ground, I just picked up an older mac mini not sure what modle or anything I just know its older i think 2005 or 2006. I pluged it in to my tv and turned it on and all that came up was a folder with a question mark in it and it changed to another image I dont remember what it was, the IT people at best buy said that it doesnt have an OS, they also said I could put one on a usb flash drive and boot it from there. My question is, if that is possable or if I need to get the disk from apple? and my only other computer is running on windows 7. I have an 8GB flash drive if the OSX will fit on that. I also read somewere that I need to do something to the usb drive to make it so the mac mini will boot off the usb drive. I can provide the last three ( it is an 11 diget S/N) they are "RHT". If that helps.
Thank you so much and I am awating any help I can get.
(sorry is stuff is miss spelled)

start up the computer with the Option key held down
Neil, are you sure? My memory is the Option key boot was not available in 10.4. We had to hold the C key down to boot from an OS cd. That was a long time ago, your memory is probably better than mine. But I had to ask.
    OS 10.5 :

  • How do I operate 2 versions of OSX on mac-mini?

    Hello!
    I have a 2013 Mac Mini
    2.3 Ghz i7
    16 gb ram
    256 Samsung EVO Pro SSD
    1Tb 5400 internal secondary drive
Available - Thunderbolt to 500 Gb 5400 SATA drive.
I use iWork '09 because of the incredible "dumb-down" of these programs with the newest release. Therefore I use OSX 10.8.5 in order to run them. These are the main programs I use for my business.
Unfortunately I am now running into issues with software programs that are not going to play with 10.8 anymore.
Can I: Install the latest OSX as my main operating system and then install 10.8.5 along with iWork '09 onto another Hard drive and then switch between the two as needed?
    If so:
    1) Would you put the 10.8 onto the Thunderbolt connected hard drive or onto the internal secondary drive?
    2) How, exactly, do I operate and switch between the two?
    3) If I produce Pages or Keynote data on the 10.8 can I open them with the newest OSX?
    4) Will I be able to safely and easily move files between the two OSX's?
Thank you everyone for any assistance you can provide.

    1) Would you put the 10.8 onto the Thunderbolt connected hard drive or onto the internal secondary drive?
Either one is fine. An internal drive wool be a little faster
    2) How, exactly, do I operate and switch between the two?
You boot using the Option key and select which startup disk to use to boot the Mac
    3) If I produce Pages or Keynote data on the 10.8 can I open them with the newest OSX?
Yes, you can open them but if modify them and them save them on the newer version the older version will not be able to open them.
    4) Will I be able to safely and easily move files between the two OSX's?
    See #3 above.

  • Disk Erase Failed. Disk cannot be dismounted on Mac Mini Server

Ok, this is a bit crazy for me anyway. I have a Mac Mini Server running Snow. My Server HD failed but fortunately my Mac HD was being used as an image backup and I can boot from it fine and runs perfect. The bad disk was not showing in Disk Utility at all. So I bought a new one and replaced it.
Now Disk Utility sees it but if I try to format it or partition it, I get the message the it cannot be dismounted. I tried re-setting NVRam (Optio+CMD+P+R) but n luck.
I have my original Snow DVD but I have no external DVD. I have a MacBook Pro Mountain Lion.
How do I erase my new disk so I can copy everything back?
    Any help is appreciate it.

Although thats an excellent suggestion but in the end I attached an old usb backup drive and restarted and held down the Option key to select it to boot. Then it went into Disk Utility, and I reimaged the 2nd drive to the new drive.  After the reimage I restarted and held down the Option key to allow me to select the first drive.
The only issue I had was to rename my boot drive back to Server HD, which I did by using Finder and one more restart.
I guess the rule is you cannot unmount the boot original boot drive unless you boot from an external drive.
All is good now and thank you.

  • Failed to Reinstall OS on MAC mini

My Mac mini was running very slow for a year. So, I decided to reformat it through ""Utilities".
After following the step by step reinstalling. A Question mark folder appeard. What should I do?

When you say "Utilities", are you referring to using the recovery process (Command + R during bootup or restart)? If you used that and erased your drive, you should be able to use the same Utilities to reinstall your OS.

  • OSX Tiger / Mac Mini Disk Slowdown

Ok so I have a couple of Mac Mini's one for me and one for the wife. well hers suffers from endless coloured wheels and appears to be waiting on disk i/o to complete. Both systems are exactly the same spec, OSX Tiger is the same 10.4.6. with identical set of updates.
I suspect either a disk problem or perhaps fragmentation, has anyone else seen the same problem ?
    Derek
    Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 1GB Memory

You're most welcome. Glad to help!
The "up to 35 seconds" is for the hard drive itself to spin-up from Standby mode. The spin-up time varies somewhat by manufacturer, disk rotational speed (RPM), etc.
You wrote: "Only fly in the ointment is the fact that my mac mini was configured in an identical way and didn't exihbit the problem. I checked the disk firmware versions and they were also identical. Thoughts?"I suspect it depends on how you each of you use your individual Macs:
    • You may be performing activities that are reading or writing to the hard drive before it reaches the inactivity time limit for spin-down.
    • You wife may be performing tasks that require far less disk activity, with more of "the action" taking place in RAM, allowing the hard drive to spin down after ten minutes of inactivity if "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is checked.

  • Trying to re-install OSX on mac Mini with broken DVD drive.

I have a mac mini G4 and the DVD drive died a long time ago and i have been using a external USB DVD when necessary. Last week the machine was taking along time to boot so I got hold of a FireWire 400 cable and connected it to my Intel iMac and tried to repair it in target disk mode. Disk Utilities was unable to repair the drive so I had to erase it and re-format which was completed successfully. Now I have the problem that I cannot get OS X Leopard or Tiger back on the mac mini from the install DVDs. I cannot get the mac mini to recognize the USB drive or the iMac as a bootable drive. (N.B. the DVD drive has also died on the Intel iMac). When booting the mac mini whilst hold the alt key, the correct screen loads but nothing appears but for the reload key and the continue key.
Any help would be grateful as I want to keep the mac mini running for my daughter to use.
    May

First off, you can't use an Intel Mac to boot a PowerPC Mac.
    Secondly, 10.6 won't work on G4s.
Third, machines older than 4 years, may need a PRAM battery replaced for their optical drive to work again.
If the PRAM battery is not the problem, then you may need to find a safe cleaner for the drive.
USB DVD drives won't boot G4s either.  Only Firewire will.  See http://www.macsales.com/ for some drives that may help you.

  • Cannot activate iMessage on mac mini

I cannot activate imessage on my mac mini. I already try to reset the network and SMC but still not work.

    Error message?

  • Cannot reinstall osx

Just got this computer last week. We followed the instructions to restore to factory defaults and are now trying to reinstall osx. It starts out by saying that it is going to take about 15 hours to install and then ends up crashing. It has done this for days and never gets any closer than about 7 hours to being finished. What can we do to get osx back on the computer?

Just for clarification, this was a brand new iMac that we purchased directly from Apple. It is a 27in, with 8GB RAM, 1T HD, and a 2.7GHz i5 processor. It came installed with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. No disks were provided with the computer.
I called tech support the other day after trying to get it to install at least 3-4 time without sucess. They told me my only option was to download the files from Apple or go to an Apple store.
To address so of the suggestions, our DSL is connection is working fine and will download for most of the chunck packets, but will not finish. We have reset our router and several times and tried using both wireless and directly connecting the iMac to the router via a network cable with no different results.
I would think that since it was brand new and purchased directly from Apple a week ago, I would be surpised if the HD was failing already. But, it is a possibility. I ran the disk utilities and ran both a verify and repair and with no issues found.
Looking back now it was a stupid decision to do this. But, this is my first Mac and I am used to Windows machines. There was nothing really wrong, but I like to do a backup of my computers before things are installed and in this case some stuff had been installed before I could do it. So, I thought how long could it take to do a restore to factory defaults. I followed the directions in the manual that came with the Mac which tell you do restart and hold command R. Then, using the disk utilities, erase the HD, then select reinstall OS X.
I really wish I had a local Apple store to take it to. The nearest store is about 2hrs away, so that is not really an option. I am hope someone can help me figure out why it will download most of the files, but then crash and not finish. Any other thoughts/suggests are appreciated.
