Cannot remove older version of quicktime

I need to remove quicktime to upgrade Itunes or quicktime cannot locate quicktime.msi file to remove to update. Please Help!!

cannot locate quicktime.msi file to remove to update.
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATION" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up").
In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC. Now try another QuickTime install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Cannot remove older version of Apple Update to reinstall Itunes, tried control panel, no help, what do I do

Message: "Cannot remove older version of Apple Update" when trying to reinstall Itunes. Tried using add remove programs in control panel, no help. Tried installing new quicktime, same message -- what do I do to get Itunes working again on my computer, using Windows xp

I'm glad I put a smile on your face Stuff like this can drive me nuts.
As I went to bed last night, I thought the same thing as you, to try a system restore. Otherwise, to answer the rest of your question, in XP, the location of the Update is in your Program Files/Apple Software Update.
To find the hidden files that may be stopping you from disabling the updater, and doing a clean install, go to:
My Computer, and on the Menu bar, click Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden Files and Folders/click Apply/OK then double click on your main drive (C:)  then Documents and Settings/your user name/Application Data/ and delete the Apple computer folder with it iTunes and Preferences.
Also in that previous views Local Settings/Application Data/Apple (Update Software)and also Apple Computer/iTunes.
Go back to Documents and Settings (again from C: drive mode) click on All Users/Application Data/Apple and if you open up Installer Cache, you will also see that it has an Apple Updater in it (unless it was uninstalled on the original uninstall). Also from that Application Data window, you will see Apple Computer Folder which has previous iTunes info that needs to be deleted. Some of these folders may be gone, but at least you can check to see, to make sure.
Here is a link from another post, to confirm or help clear up any of my paths/solutions.
When you've done all that, restart your PC, and I would run CCleaner  (the free version links are just below the Buy and Download button) just to clean things up, and try your re-install.
    Hope I didn't overwhelm you.

  • Error message: cannot remove older versions of apple software update

I recently got a 30 gb ipod, and i cant install itunes 7. I originally tried installing it at first, and it said cannot remove older applications of Apple Software Update. So i installed itunes 4 to put music on my ipod. Then i tried again to install itunes 7 and i keep getting the same error message. Anyone else having this problem? Can anyone give me some suggestions please?

I would first try and remove both iTunes and Quicktime prior to doing the install of iTunes. The following link will show you how to remove both programs. Make sure you do Step 16 as it is usually Quicktime that causes problems with the upgrade.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
If it will not let you remove the programs, you can try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. The download is about 1/4 of the way down the page. Good luck.

  • Cannot remove older version/won't install

So I update iTunes because a new version is available and then I restart like it always asks me to. But when I try to open iTunes after restarting, "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed". So I go to itunes.com and try to install the newest version again. After the installation starts, though, an error message comes up saying "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below.
When I try to uninstall, it gives me the same error message and then says "The older version of iTunes cannot be removed."
I've never had this problem before so I have no idea what's going on. I search for the file 'iTunes.msi' on my computer, found one and put that path in the box but it still gives me the same error message. Any suggestions?

Ok I'll give you my cleanup instructions for itunes. You need to follow these steps exactly and carefully. If you have any questions about anything then please post before doing it.
    1. Uninstall itunes and ipod software. If you can't uninstall use the MSI clean utility.
    2. Reboot your PC
    3. Re-download the itunes installer and QT and save this installer to your desktop
    4. Go to C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations. You should see folders like {06EB3288-C5F4-4C73-8EEE-AC798668FF66}
    5. Look in each of these folders for itunes.msi and delete the folder. Be careful to only delete the folders containing itunes.msi
    6. Clean out your temp folders, Delete as much as you can in these folders except for the folders Cookies, History, Temporary Internet Files.
    a. C:\windows\temp (if one exists)
    b. C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Local Settings\Temp
Sometimes installers will pick up old files or won’t delete their temporary files.
Leave the files if you have doubt about deleting the files.
    7. (OPTIONAL) Go to http://www.download.com/3000-2094-881470.html and download the regcleaner. Unpack it and run it. This is a nice utility that will delete broken registry entries and create a file with them. This way if it deletes anything needed you can add it back. Note I never had to do this with using it for many years. Also it doesn't list XP but you'll be fine. I run XP on both.
    8. Reboot your PC.
    9. Now try to go and install everything again. I'd do QT first then follow with itunes. Remember to disable virus/firewall/privacy/web accelerators before launching the install.
If you launch the MSI Cleanup utility it will list applications in the window. Select the one you want to remove and click ok. This will remove the msi information from your pc. You still need to do the delete steps in the Program Files folder for ipod, itunes and quicktime cause the cleanup utility won't do this.
Again if you have any questions just post back.

  • Cannot remove older version of iTunes, cannot DL latest iTunes

I have tried to download the latest iTunes version many times but in vain. Hence, decided to remove the older version of iTunes and hopefully be able to DL the latest version. But after many attempts, my PC simply cannot remove the entire older iTunes version 4. This program "Apply Software Update" still lingers in the system! It seperate dialog box pops up stating
"The feature you are trying to remove is on a network resource that is unavailable.Click an alternative path that contains the installation package 'AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi in the box below'. However, even when i try to locate for the software i simply cannnot find it!
Any suggestions pls? So stuck without  iTunes bkup.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies. The notes below the box include what to do if you cannot remove a specific component.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

  • Cannot remove old version of Quicktime

I have a Quicktime version that came when I bought my laptop. The OS system also came with the laptop. I have a Windows XP Home Edition. When I tried to install the Itunes latest version with quicktime it kept reporting that it is unable to remove the old version of quicktime and cannot continue with the installation. I have tried to follow the instructions with regards to removing the Quicktime including the 2 files inside the System 32 folder. I have restarted my pc and tried to install again but it still shows the same problem. Also the Quicktime logo is still showing up in my Add/Remove Program without a file size. So now I don't even have the quicktime anymore. Don't even know what else I can do to completely remove the old file.

ok what finally worked is that I installed the windows install cleanup. what I have been working at for hours took just around 15 min. but as I understand it you have to be very careful with it or you might accidentally remove files that you need. Thank you for your help.

Here in Finlad we have several Adobe reader users, which cannot install the newest Adobe reader version.

HELP! What to do? I´ve also tried "revo" -reinstaller and ccleaner -programs. They don´t help the situation. Cannot install.

  • Cannot remove older version of bonjour

I need iTunes. when i try and download and install it, a message pops up that says the old version of bonjour cannot be removed. later, a message pops up that tells me that the old version of qicktime cannot be removed, thus, iTunes isn't installed. i tried removing bonjour from the add/remove programs thing, it didn't work, it tells me it can't find bonjour.msi. i tried finding and deleting all apple related folders and files, but still i can't install iTunes. what do i do?

i tried removing bonjour from the add/remove programs thing, it didn't work, it tells me it can't find bonjour.msi.
Unfortunately, these sorts of msi-related troubles have gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any BonJour entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes again. Does the install go through properly now?
If instead you get similar trouble then with your QuickTime, run CleanUp again, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove". Quit CleanUp, restart the PC again and then try another iTunes install.
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:

  • "Cannot uninstall older version of quicktime"

That's the error I get when I try to install iTunes. When I try to uninstall quicktime it says the resource for QuickTime.msi is unavailable. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to fix this so I can install iTunes.

Try Windows Installer Cleanup Utility it might remove the old QuickTime.msi installer, then you should be able to download and install QT. You'll have to download it from the geeks

  • ITunes/Quicktime problem "The older version of Quicktime cannot be removed"

Whenever I try installing iTunes 7, I get the message "The older version of Quicktime cannot be removed." A similar problem with the same wording similarly cropped when I downloaded iTunes 6.
Source of the problem is a failed System Restore which left files corrupted and such, I've tried using ccCleaner to remove iTunes and Quicktime from the registry but it simply isn't there, as is the case when I use regedit in Run.
Add/Remove Programs doesn't work as well, when I click on uninstall for iTunes/iPod/Quicktime there just isn't any response or window that pops up
    Any help?

Add/Remove Programs doesn't work as well, when I click on uninstall for iTunes/iPod/Quicktime there just isn't any response or window that pops up
okay, let's try the technique from the following post. (it includes instructions on what to do if Add/Remove isn't working for a program.)
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3366434
(the link in there to the itunes 7.0.1.8 installer now leads to a 7.0.2.16 installer. no cause for concern, use the 7.0.2.16.)

  • Error 1714. The older version of QuickTime cannot be removed. - Fix

I ran into this problem when I was installing the latest version of i-Tunes. Because i-Tunes requires QuickTime I researched for hours. I couldn't un-install QuickTime, it wasn't showing up in a software list to uninstall. I used Regedit to remove all of the "QuickTime" entries in the registry. Restarted my computer, still no luck.
One thing that I did I ran the Quickertime installer from a DOS prompt and added /le file.txt
This creates a log file with all the error during the installation.
This gave me the follow error in the file:
    === Logging started: 12/30/2006 17:29:18 ===
Error 1714. The older version of QuickTime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group. System Error 1610.
    === Logging stopped: 12/30/2006 17:29:31 ===
Again this is what I to searched for the errors with on luck.
I ran the Quicktime installer again, this time I used the /l* file2.txt. This logs everything during the installation.
I searched this file for where the errors were and found this:
    RemoveExistingProducts: Application: {50D8FFDD-90CD-4859-841F-AA1961C7767A}, Command line: UPGRADINGPRODUCTCODE={F07B861C-72B9-40A4-8B1A-AAED4C06A7E8} REMOVE=ALL

Then in the registry removed the entry 50D8FFDD-90CD-4859-841F-AA1961C7767A in the HKLM\Software\Classes\Installer\Products directory.
!!!!Make a backup of your registry if you are unfamiliar with regedit.
