Cannot rename folders in SMB share using Column view

I connect to an Ubuntu SMB server and files and folder access worked perfectly under 10.5.8.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard and a curious thing happends. I set CHMOD of the main folder to 777. I can create and rename folders in this first level but if I am in column view, I can create a folder (untitled folder) but can't rename it.
If I move to icon or list view, I can create folders levels deep. It took me a day to work out what was wrong!

Same issue here. Can't rename a folder on Samba-share with Finder. Doesn't matter which view.
--Server details
FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE GENERIC
Samba version 3.3.7
--Debug-info
I raised the Samba loglevel, and noticed an increase of the file 'nobody.log'. This is strange, because I am logged in and accessing a private file.
My Mac is named 'mrcmini'. Samba logs to 'nobody.log':

Finder sets up a session to start the 'Rename'-action, but does not send the username.

  • Rename folders in SMB shares

    Hello,
    as different threads already proved
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2139840?start=0&tstart=0
there is a bug in 10.6.x where folders in SMB shares (linux but also Windows servers) cannot be renamed (Finder, Terminal, ...).
Since the bug was not present in 10.5.x, I wonder whether it is still there in 10.7.x.
    Could someone please check?
    Thank you

  • Creating a folder on an SMB share using a Mac

    Hi everyone,
This is more of a question than a problem I'm trying to solve, really. Though the answer might help me better explain the issue to our security team.
Our environment has multiple Windows file servers, both 2003 and 2008. If one of these SMB shares is accessed from a Mac and the user creates a folder, will the ACLs on the share that are set to cascade actually cascade to this newly created folder? We've had issues in the past where ACLs that are supposedly set to cascade on a shared folder are not present on sub-folders created from Macs.
Next question: if the share resides on a netapp device, do the same rules apply? The Macs are still connecting to these shared folders using the SMB protocol.
All Macs are bound to our 2008 AD domain and use network accounts with local homefolders. The issue seems to happen when one or both of the following things happen:
    1. A Mac user copies/creates a folder on a Netapp share and for some reason it doesn’t inherit rights correctly
    2. We move the folder from one share on an actual Windows server to the Netapp and it doesn’t take permissions correctly.
Please let me know if you need any other information.

Let's put it this way: I'm asking on a Mac site because the people on non-windows support sites are WAAAAY more interested in talking about problems and solutions involving things other than Windows.
I'm fairly certain that the windows servers ARE respecting their own inheritance rules, barring any major bugs and the like which someone may know about...
The isue isn't with Macs moving shares to a netapp, it's with a share being moved to a NetApp that has folders created by a Mac. Talking with our security team further, it seems the problem may be limited to shares resident on a NetApp or moved from a Windows server to a NetApp.
I was primarily asking to see if anyone knew of any issues with these particular situations or had experienced something similar and had dug into it any deeper with F5 (NetApp vendor).

  • Problems saving to an SMB share using 10.8

Issue happens in CS5 after Mountain Lion Upgrade 10.8
when using CS5 to save files via a SMB connection to a Windows Server the following error is displayed "could not save filename due to a program error"
however file save functionality in other programs / finder succeeds as expected with no issue.

Branched this out to a new discussion.  Which Adobe application are you trying to save to the SMB share from?

  • Cannot lock files on SMB share

I have a file copied to an SMB share. I would like to lock the file, preferably using applescript. Right now, though, I can't even lock the file by doing a command-I and checking the "locked" box - it checks, then clears itself.

I'm sortof figuring that but I can always hope - I just wish I could find some solid documentation that says yes/no... and I haven't been able to.....

  • Can't tab into file list when using column view in the open/save dialogue boxes

    Hi,
When in Open/Save Dialog Boxes I can't use tab to select the file/folder list in Column View. Tab will only cycle through Save As, Tags, Search, and the Sidebar. In all the other views (Icon, List, Cover) I can tab into the file list. Is this a bug?
I know that enabling Full Keyboard Access will make this work, but I'd rather not do that since it increases the number of buttons you must tab through to get to the file list.
I'm using the latest version of Yosemite on a 2014 Macbook Air. Thanks.

    Hi,
Did you found the solution to this? I'm also trying to do something like you , but I got stuck up in a very primitive stage than you. I'm not getting how I can make that File Download window to appear. Can you help me please.
    Thanks.

  • Osx mavericks 10.9.3 cannot open large folders on smb share

         hi,
This week I bought mij first macbook pro. so I new in osx.
I have a ubuntu 14.04 server running with samba 4.1.6.  From a Windows or linux computer is can acces the shares just fine.
When i try to acces the share from my macbook i can open the share but when I try to open an folder with allot of files/folders the is empty in finder, i thought first it was a performance issue so I've waited for 30 minutes but still empty. smaller Folders ik can open in finder.
i've been googling for days now but i cannot find any solution, forcing smb1 is not working as an example.
in console there his no error on the server the logfile has also no error
does any one knows how to get this problem solved?
    Thanks in Advance

According to reports, if the filing protocol is SMB, you can sometimes work around the problem by forcing a CIFS connection instead. To do that, first disconnect from the file server, then select
              Go ▹ Connect to Server
from the Finder menu bar, or press the key combination command-K. Then enter
    cifs://server-address
in the dialog that opens, where server-address is the IP address or domain name of the server.

  • Unable To Create and/or Rename Folders on DFS Shares

    Hi
We have a Windows 2008 Storage Server that we use as a data server. About 100 folders are shared on our network and we use DFS to collect these shares into manageable shared units.
The network comprises 35 Windows 7 clients and one Vista client and a couple of XP machines. These are on a Windows Active Directory that presently comprises three domain controllers: 2003, 2008 and 2012 R2. The network comprises just one site and one subnet.
This setup has worked fine for many years (we've had an Active Directory domain since 2001).
As soon as I replaced our Windows XP clients with the Windows 7 clients I have been seeing some strange network issues.
The most bizarre, and the most unwelcome is that when staff try to create new folders or rename existing ones they will sometimes not be allowed to. The problem is intermittent and I have no idea what may be causing it.
The folder rename issue was encountered when we still used XP but I fixed that by disabling the caching of thumbnails. The error message that appears states the folder is in use. I have used Computer Management on the storage server and looked at Shared
Folders > Open Files and have determined that no files were open when this issue occurred.
When staff are unable to create a new folder they see the following message:
I have tried various things to troubleshoot this with the help of a TechNet Community Support person in the Windows 7 forums
    here.
To summarise we have tried using Process Monitor to capture the events and I am quite happy to upload this if anyone would like to see it.
We tried the registry edits detailed in
    this MS article.
I have created a dedicated firewall rule that allows all traffic on TCP ports 137, 138, 139 and 445.
Another respondent suggested checking out Slow-Link mode but this has not been triggered.
Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this, please? The network worked like a dream before the Windows 7 clients were introduced, when XP was used.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
As you just upgarded to Windows 7, please make sure SP1 is also installed on all systems and install the following hotfix rollup for Windows 7 SP1:
An enterprise hotfix rollup is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2775511/en-us
There was a known issue on Windows 7 which affected shared folders, that newly created or deleted files are not reflect in network folder immediately, which seems similar to your error. If issue still exists after SP1 and hotfix rollup please help confirm:
    1. If this issue occurs only on DFS folder in accessing with \\domain.com\namespace. Could you reproduce the same issue in accessing \\server\sharefolder?
    2. Will the same issue occurs after disabling Offline Files if it is enabled.
If you have any feedback on our support, please send to [email protected]

  • Some files not showing anymore in folders on smb-share (lc_ctype error)

I use a shared folder on my iMac for my work projects.
After the upgrade to Mavericks, I noticed that Dreamweaver CS 6 did not show all files and folders anymore in several projects.
This is on a Windows 7 machine.
The same thing happens when in FileZilla, so it's not a specific Dreamweaver issue.
When I go to a troubled folder in FileZilla I get this error (in Dutch):
"Een lokale bestandsnaam kon niet gedecodeerd worden. Zorg ervoor dat de LC_CTYPE (of LC_ALL)-omgevingsvariable juist is ingesteld. Totdat u het probleem oplost, kunnen er bestanden ontbreken in de bestandslijsten. Er zal geen waarschuwing meer getoond worden gedurende deze sessie."
    Translation:
"A local file could not be decoded. Ensure that the LC_CTYPE (or LC_ALL) environment variable is set. Until you solve the problem, you are missing files in the file list. There will be no warning displayed during this session properly."
When I go to thew same folder in Windows Explorer all files are shown.
When I use Dreamweaver CS6 on the iMac no errors occur and every file just shows fine.
It seems it only occurs in random directories of the local files of website projects I maintain with Dreamweaver
If anyone ones how to fix this, I would realy REALY appreciate this.
    This totaly kills my workflow.

    Pages v5.5.1
Pages documents incompatible with Windows Shares, because they are written as uncompressed packages (folders). These need to be explicitly compressed (e.g. foo.pages.zip) by the user before deposited on Windows shares. (Right-click menu on Mac file icon)

  • Cannot rename folders or files

Periodically Finder decides to stop letting me rename anything on my computer. I can create new folders, but must leave them as the default "untitled folder." When this glitch starts, I also cannot copy and paste from the text that is in the folder name. Additionally, spotlight search stops working.
Relaunching finder has no effect. Deleting the com.apple.finder.plist file and relaunching works only some times. Oh great, I just hit command + **** + U to open up utilities in order to open the Console and discovered keyboard shortcuts have stopped working too. Nothing weird is happening in the Console.

Also, just to be on the safe side, although force quitting the finder appears to temporarily resolve the issue, I also did the following:
tested disk directory with apple disk utility: OK
repaired permissions: nothing had to be repaired
force quitting the finder restored normal functionality
noted that font reserve was not un-installed properly, preference pane was still in system preferences, although application was missing, un-installed font reserve via installer
noted that there were duplicate fonts showing in font book, resolved and/or disabled duplicate fonts
deleted finder preferences from user/library/preferences folder
ran spotless utility to delete entire spotlight index for both volumes attached
ran font finagler to delete all font caches
    rebooted
finder seems to operate normally now, finder preferences is normal 4K size
since issue was intermittent, i'm not 100% sure if the issue is resolve, and user will report back if it occurs again
    This was on a 10.4.11 G5 dual 1.8GHz Macintosh

  • Traversing folders in SMB shares

I am working on getting a couple Macs setup on our Active Directory domain.  Once joined to the domain I can log in using my AD credentials however I get an error saying "There was a problem connecting to the server" " You do not have permissions to access this server". It appears my home directory assigned by AD is placed on the dock but its just a question mark and I can't access it.
The user home directories are on a DFS share:  \\domain.local\share\officeusers\username
The folder "officeusers" nobody has permissions to but they can be traversed and on Windows PCs so that the user can access their personal folder thats in there.  If I were to browse to the path \\domain.local\share\officeusers on either Windows or Mac I get an error saying I don't have permissions, which is fine.  However I can browse directly to my user folder under "officeusers" on a Windows PC but when using command+k to browse directly using the Mac I am told I don't have permissions to do so.
It seems like the Mac won't allow me to traverse the officeusers folder to access my personal folder. Is there a workaround that I can force the Mac to traverse that folder?  I tried using Thursby's AdmitMac with no success and through troubleshooting it wouldn't let me log in period because it couldn't access my home folder.

  • I cannot rename my album in the source column

One of the posting in the forum suggested I can double click the album and change the name of the album. In my iPhoto 5.0.4, the double clicking does not make the name editible. How do I turn on the editing mode?

I found the cause of my problem. In the system preferences, the mouse settings, the double click setting is set to "fast". No matter how fast I double clicked, it was treated as two separate clicks. I change the speed to medium and the problem is solved. Thank you for the hint.

  • Finder Column View Broken when using NAME

    Hi fellow Apple nerds,
I have found a rather frustrating problem in OSX 10.8 Finder.
When I use column view in finder I want to have my columns orgainised so I can see the whole name of the files and folders in each column.
Now this is the problem, when I "arrange" by "kind" the column contents is split into its various kinds of files.  THe problem is if I double click on the column to rezice it, it will only resize to the contents in the first type of files.
Read it carefully, its a little hard to explain but you can try it for yourself.  You cannot get the column to show the whole file names of the other types of files until you return to the "name" arrange view.
I find this very frustrating as I like to have my file sorted into the types and also display the full file names.

I just discovered it only happens with files
on Windows network shares, so I guess it must be
    something to do with that.
Ah, that makes sense. Finder is reading the metadata entries, no problem on the Mac, but they might not even exist on the Windows server. And even they are part of the file, as may be the case with, for instance, EXIF data from the camera and/or Photoshop, the pieces of the Spotlight process that Finder uses isn't reading them on the network share. Spotlight doesn't work well over a network.
Since I don't use networking, I suggest you try posting your request in the Network forum:

Someone there might have a work-around or other suggestion.

  • SMB Share Problem

I have Windows Server 2003 with a couple SMB shares setup. My problem is that on my schools network I am able to connect no problem to the server when in my Dorm building. However when I go to a different building finder says "The server may not exist...Check the server name or ip address..." I am trying to connect using the Servers IP Address, I have also tried using DNS name and that doesnt work either. The catch is that when I am running Vista through Boot Camp I am able to connect no problem to the SMB Shares using the IP address, so Im curious as to whats different within the two OS's that one can connect and the other cannot.
All connections are Wired, the server is not behind a router within my room.
In finders connect to server i am enter smb://<ip address>

  • Can't rename folders on Snow Leopard Server

I have 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Server running on a new Mac Mini server. Attached I have a Pegasus Raid storing all my files. I have a sharepoint set up for every project we work on but a couple act strangely. Users can create and delete folders but can not rename them once created. In order to rename they must drag the folder onto the desktop, rename and then replace the folder on the server. All permissions are set up identical to the other sharepoints which work fine. I have had a couple so-called "experts" look at the permissions in both the terminal and Server Admin. Everyone seems stumped. Any ideas?

Thanks for the input but I finally soved the problem. Here is what I found...
Although I had given users/group the ALLOW/FULL CONTROL premission with a sharepoint, I discovered that in Server Admin if you double-click on the User or Group name under the ACL permissions that a drop down box appears. This box allows you to fine tune the ACL but it appears that by default all of the boxes are not checked even though I granted the user Full Control. After checking all of the boxes I was able to create and rename folders in my share as expected.
This also had an similar effect if I denied Full Control. Some of the boxes remained unchecked and it left holes in my system where denied users could still access some files. Again by checking all boxes these holes were closed.
Does anyone know how to change the default so that all boxes are checked when assigning the Full Control permission?
