Cannot reset PRAM/firmware password

My Mac Pro 1.1 running 10.6.4 will not respond to start up commands. I cannot reset PRAM or use the "C" key to start up from the CD drive. I have not set a firmware password, when I opened Firmware Utility there was no password. What am I missing here? np

Swapping an Nvidia for ATI in XP be sure to uninstall the device driver etc before you put the new graphic card in, though if you've used XP a bit you probably know.
Even marginal FBDIMMs have been known to be cantankerous though if you have ruled everything down to the graphic card being the culprit.
(2gb x 8) and restarted with one module at a time and the next to last of course was the one that created the blinking light. It has been going bad for some time in retrospect since the Mac is faster with 12 gb than it was with 16.
Marginal RAM and not reporting full density (showing half for instance), and 4 x 4GB is the "ideal" way to get to 16GB on Mac Pro 1,1.
One issue with marginal RAM even though it is ECC you can end up with corrupt files or file content (meaning it won't show up as a corrupt file, just the file or pref or cache contents are well, "garbage in / garbage out." And need to be replaced or restored from back prior to problem(s).
Putting more/all of your hardware configuration in .sig helps. Whether you had 7300GT, 1st gen 8800GT, X1900, along with 8 x 2GB and anything else.

  • How to reset a firmware password?

do you know how to reset the firmware password on a workstation ultra 30?
each command on the ok prompt ask me for a firmware password. i tried (of course unsuccessfully) several.

    @rukbat,
You are partially correct. It depends if the security-mode is set to "command" or "full" (and if auto-boot?=true). If it is set to command, he can put in the other systems disk (in the same slot) and enter "b" to boot, then enter the eeprom command as root after he logs in. However, he cannot boot to cdrom because the boot-device is directed to the hard drive and cannot be changed without the eeprom password. I have used this technique to set security-mode=none on several E250s in years past.
If it is set to "full", his only option is to enter the password and log in to get an OK prompt, which leaves him where he currently is.
You dont have to get your prom from SUN. The SUN part number for an Ultra30 prom is: 525-1669, which you get several hits on if you search. IIRC, anysystems.com doesn't list the part but they can probably help you out.

  • How can I reset my firmware password?

Hi when I bought my macbook pro second hand, I didn't realize there was a firmware password for the computer making it impossible to enter the boot options menu. I have tried the password that came with the computer and my user password and neither worked, so how can I reset the password? Is there a general default password? Any way I could do it without going to the apple store as the nearest one is three hours away and I don't have transportation to get there.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can only reset the firmware password if you know it. Also, you need to start from OS X Recovery or the OS X disc in order to reset it, so it's not possible to do anything else. The only thing you can do is to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller, because there's no way to reset your firmware password that we already know

  • PRAM won't reset, no firmware password set

    Hey guys,
I'm trying to reset my PRAM/VRAM after severe freezing, weird multicolored horizontal lines across open windows and lots of crashes. I'm trying to find out what's going on. However, upon trying to reset, it just, for the life of me, won't work. I did this before though, and it did work back then. Now however, the computer starts up just as it always does — no second chime. Other commands won't work as well — like holding down the command-key or the shift key. It just starts up so as if I'm not doing anything. I have no firmware password set, I checked and when starting this app from my Snow Leopard DVD it asks me if I'd like to set up one — it doesn't give me the option to remove any old password. So I figured I haven't set one.
What could I do? Any clues?
    Cheers…

Well, are you using wireless keyboard? See here   http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3273
This may help with other issues:
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • I have a macbook pro (13inch). I had a firmware password set on it and updated the firmware when apple update told me to. I cannot change the firmware password or remove it now.

    Hello,
I have a macbook pro which had a firmware password set on it (security-mode = command).
Update asked me to install updates and one of them was an EFI update. I proceeded and the macintosh booted just fine.
I've tried changing the firmware password, and removing the password without success so far. It's almost like the nvram terminal command does nothing as far as security is concerned.
    Help would be appreciated!

Apparently the newer macbooks use a different utility than the older macbooks.
setregproptool will ask for the current password, and nvram is not used for these anymore.

I have have lost my password for apple id and the email account it was under no longer exists, switched from Cox to Uverse so I cannot get the email to reset the password.  Help >

If you can't get the password reset via http://iforgot.apple.com (do you have a rescue email address on the account ?) then you will have to contact Support in your country to get the password reset (they should also be able to reset your security questions).

  • Cannot reset BB ID password on my device

Hi, i followed the link you posted for the sticky http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-World/How-to-regain-access-to-your-BBID/td-p/25467... and I am still not having any luck.  I have reset my BB ID account and reset password/security question.  I can log on to BB through browser but when i try it on my device, i get an error saying "you can't sign in with a different blackberry ID on this device.  Sign in the original BB ID used on this device".  When i hit "forgot password" it lets me answer with my new security question but it will not recoqnize the new password.  Help.

This is the key...whatever you did, your BB now thinks that your BBID is no longer the same that is presently integrated to the BB device. The only way to rectify that is to WIPE the BB device, and then sign into your BBID account as part of the initial setup procedure. You will, of course, want to backup your device first.
    Good luck!

  • Cannot reset PRAM

I have a 24" iMac 2.8 Ghz. The superdrive has been acting up recently and I was advised to reset the PRAM. Upon attemting to do this I found that the iMac constantly reboots as I hold down the appropriate key combination. There is no beeping - no nothing.
Then I attempted to reset the NVRAM and found it just boots straight into OSX. I do not use a blutooth keyboard or mouse - so that is not the problem. The keyboard is the same that came with my iMac. I'm presently out of ideas and am worried that I now face a more serious problem than just the superdrive acting up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So what are you doing to reset the PRAM as opposed to the NVRAM? With a USB keyboard attached they are both reset when you press & hold CommandOption+PR during startup until you have heard the startup chime twice, then release the keys.
Have you disabled the startup chime? Have you turned it down?
