Cannot resize a window

I am new to the Mac and am having a problem. I did a search but couldn't find an answer. I installed Adobe Lightroom and expanded the window to the point where I cannot see either the resize handle or the red, yellow, or green button at the top. I can now do nothing about shrinking or moving this window. Is there a way to resize it from here? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hello van:
Try trashing the preference file (com.apple.finder.plist) and restarting and see if that helps.

  • Cannot resize safari window

i can't resize the safari window by hovering over the bottom right corner of the window. I am working on a Macbook Pro and Yosemite.
    thanks!

When you hover over the corner do you not see the cursor change to a slanted heavy line with arrows at each end? Do you then click down and then resize the window?

  • Cannot Resize Finder Windows

Since  a couple of days I have sometimes trouble resizing Finder windows in Lion (10.7.1).
Clicking on the green plus-icon does not change anything and trying to resize by going to the edges or corners does not work either. The curser changes to an arrow but nothing happens when dragging.
The other two icons (red and yellow) still work as normal. Closing the window an re-opening the same directory "solves" the problem. The new window is fully resizable again.
Any idea what causes this issue?

I have a feeling SMB might have something to do with it. I used to have problems with permissions behaving correctly when accessing SMB servers in the past. but this is a kind of difficult problem to further diagnose.
On the other hand maybe it is just .DS_Stores making mischief... would it be any harm to delete all the .DS_Stores on the network volumes?
I used to do this periodically with a script because OS X has a habit leaving a trail of both these and apple double files behind for non HFS volumes.

  • Cannot resize media window

The media window cannot be resized. If you can resize the arrange window why can't you make the media window bigger? I'm using 2 24" screens and need to have the audio bin bigger.
When browsing, most audio files characters are long and do not fit in the column view nor is it effecient in list view. You need to be able to browse and audition files quickly, including having AUTOPLAY!!!

  • ITunes window stuck at the top - cannot resize the window

Is this part of some glitch that's running around?
When I open iTunes (11.2.2 running on 10.9.3) - the top bar is extended above the top of my screen - so I can't resize it - the red, yellow and green buttons are all out of sight - above - and I've tried everything to get them back - everything is cut off at the top.
    Any simple solution, I'm sure?

So this is what it looks like - and it's not on full screen mode - I can't access the red, yellow or green buttons to resize - I can resize the sides and bottom - but can't click on the very top to drag it down - and when I play music - you can't see what track is playing or the scrub bar (?) - only if I then go into full screen mode.  But no matter what I do - iTunes always opens stuck at the top.

  • Cannot resize windows from all sides? Just the 1 corner??

    Hi all,
I've just switched back to Mac in the past year after 6 years with Windows. While in no way do I prefer windows overall, I cannot understand why Mac has not made all four sides of a given window 'grabbable' for resizing.
This is a massively inconvenient situation when you consider how often many of us need to resize/compare windows, particularly when switching to new computers, uploading files, etc.
Am I missing the solution? Is there a script available?
All I find on here are pointers to windowdragon and it requires APE which I prefer to avoid. Is there REALLY no OEM solution to this???
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment on this...

Adding that feature wouldn't pose a problem for you, though, as you wouldn't have to use it (though I bet you would in time). For people switching to mac after years on the PC, this is in fact a much-lamented issue.
Since it wouldn't hurt 'the people who don't care' to add the functionality, but the vast majority of Windows converts would be happier, it only makes sense, from a marketing standpoint, to add the feature.
People who aren't in the habit of using the feature (like yourself) quite naturally don't care much, but if you ARE in the habit of using it, it's quite annoying to have to draw the mouse all the way across the screen to find some dumb little spot (how I feel about it) when you know full well there is a more efficient way to handle the issue, and you're quite accustomed to it.
Consider this: I CAN use windows XP like a mac, in that I CAN go down to the bottom right corner to resize the window. If that were actually the superior method to resize the window, in every circumstance, I would naturally already be working with it that way. And of course I wouldn't notice there's a difference.
But it's not a superior manner of handling the 'resize' issue when your mouse is way ovver somewhere else on the screen. While this might sound like much ado about nothing, when you consider how nice it is to remove or simplify repetitive tasks, it's really a major annoyance.
But me, I'm an early adopter of the latest solutions for simplicity in the interface. I also have the new Logitech NuLOOQ ToolDial device, which has some real promise too.
Allowing users to resize the windows from any border on the window is a good idea, and not a bad idea, no matter how you look at it. It would cause no problem for anyone, yet help/satisfy many people, particularly those coming from the ONLY major opportunity Apple has to gain market share - windows users.
To be clear, this isn't a pro-windows rant, I'm just completely peeved with this one majorly annoying 'missing link' in an OS I otherwise like quite a lot. Implementing this feature wouldn't seem to be a major software engineering feat for the likes of Apple, so what's the holdup?

How the **** is that ?

  • How do I resize the window of pages in the new version? It takes up most of my desktop. I would like to make it tall and narrow, which was possible in the old pages, but I cannot seem to do it in the new version.

I agree it is a very bad and wasteful design especially for users on small laptop screens.
You can drag it to whatever shape you want from the bottom left corner.
Click on the paintbrush to make the Format side panel disappear. However you will need to use that side panel for most formatting.

  • Window off Screen - cannot resize -  Apple should fix this

As much as I love my Mac, I am really frustrated and fed up with the goofy design of the OS X window resizing and moving.
There have been many posts, web articles and so on complaining about the difficulty of resizing a window whose bottom edge is off the screen.
I currently cannot edit a Mail rule because of this. I have tried about five or six Applescript "fixes" supplied by various folks but none work.
This is just an appallingly bad GUI design decision in OS X. Apple should take a hint from some of the linux desktops and allow window resizing via the mouse from any location in the window.
    Fix it, Apple.

I take it you're talking about the dropdown panel in Rules panel in Mail > Preferences, when you click Edit?
You must have a rule with a whole lot of conditions and/or actions.
    What is your screen resolution?
I just experimented a bit, and suspect it's a bug, not "bad design". I notice as I add lines, and the panel approaches the bottom of the screen, the scroll bars appear, so the panel quits growing, as it should, but only 2 lines after they should. It looks to me like the height of the tool bar isn't being considered properly.
If that's what you're seeing, report it that way in the +Mail and Address book+ forum. If others see the same behavior, one of the top posters there may be able to report it, or you can call AppleCare and they can tell you how.
I doubt this is a condition many folks would see, so it probably hasn't come up often, if ever.
If I misunderstand what's happening, please clarify.

  • Hi, I cannot resize or relocate the FF5 window on my screen

HI, just installed FF5. The FF5 window seems locked to upper RH corner. I cannot drag/move window. I cannot resize, except for full screen.

The standard Thunderbird Write window is just that, a composition window. If you turn the Contact Sidebar on by pressing F9 then you can see your address book contacts down the left margin.
If you had anything different it must have been from an add on that you installed. There is no guessing what you did there.

  • Cannot resize partition...

Before mods delete/close/move my post 'cause I'm sure there exist hundred of related problems to this let me explain.
I study Engineering in Computational Systems, for my Digital Design class I need some software that only exist for Windows (I've been searching the web looking for alternatives for Mac without success)... So I decided I'd install BootCamp and Windows 7, but I got the **** "cannot resize partition" error...
So here's the deal... I CAN'T make a backup, my external hard drive is damaged, I've been searching and I found that this problem is 'cause BootCamp can't move big files or stuff like that so to fix the problem I have to defrag the hard disk and here comes another problem, I can't afford iDefrag neither...
Any help for defrag or resize my Mac OS X partition?

Usually when I see "Cannot resize..." it is because the Windows partition was too small, or they need more room for OS X files. Not because they got the error message from Boot Camp Assistant (which tells you to reformat and restore after you have a backup).
Step #1 is (always) backup before making changes.
Real easy... buy an external, you will need backups for Mac OS and probably Windows. you will want to be able to run OS X off external too at some point.
It isn't because there are big files, it is that they can't be moved.
The free space has to be contiguous, not fragmented, also, in order to create a slice for Windows.
I assume it won't work with a VM running under/inside OS X so you need to run Windows natively.
Some people have bought iDefrag ($49?) and results are anywhere from good to mixed to didn't work.
You are right, the question has been asked... about 999 times in the last two years.

  • Cannot view quicktime window normal size and still see controls!

    Help!
I cannot view quicktime window normal size and still see control butttons (pause, play etc.)
I search this forum and found another previous similar question, but the answer. (To use control+0, which would make it half-size.), is not what I need.
What I need is to have a nice fuller size view, (not the narrow little half-size), but any way i find of doing that hides the controls below the bottom of my screen!
I cannot resize it from any side, except the bottom r. corner, which is hidden with these desireable fuller options.

Update: this was my mistake - I had neglected to configure all the view containers in the WebDynproCO window, which was generated by adding the GP interface to the component.  All is well.

  • Unable to resize photoshop Window

    Hi all,
I have a laptop and use a large external monitor at my work office. When I am not at work, and not using the monitor, I use the screen on the laptop.
The problem is that Photoshop does not resize its windows to fit the laptop screen. Therefore, windows with layers extend below the screen (see attached). Since one cannot adjust the height of a window from its top (only its bottom), I can find no way to return it to being able to fit, and cannot access the icon buttons at the bottom of the window.
Of course, I could trash preferences, or set up a new workspace, but that's quite a hassle of a work around when it seems a window should either automatically shrinkto the screen height, or at least give an option to be resized from its top.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!
Photoshop CC 2014; Mac OSX 10.8.5

PS. I should have mentioned I've tried:
    turning on/off application frame
resizing photoshop application window (green button)
    restarting photoshop
double-clicking panel name (but that only collapses it completely)
making screen resolution higher to fit more stuff on screen (already maxed out)
